>> on cbs "this morning." starbucks is encouraging its baristas to talk to customers about race. so far most of the race conversations end up with black customers saying no i don't want to buy a josh groban cd. >> this morning's "eye-opener" is presented by toyota. let's go places. captioning funded by cbs let's go places. captioning funded by cbs welcome to cbs news. norah o'donnell is off. jeff glor is with us. japanese police this morning are investigating death threats against united states ambassador caroline kennedy. the american embassy in tokyo received threatens phone calls last month. >> reports of the threat surfaced hours before first lady michelle obama arrived in japan this morning. her first visit to that country. seth doane is tracking the investigation from beijing. good morning. >> reporter: right now the u.s. embassy in tokyo is not saying much more other than as a matter of policy they will not discuss the ambassador's security. >> good morning. >> reporter: japanese media is reporting those phone calls were made to the u.s. embassy last month, and that the caller was speaking english. u.s. ambassador caroline kennedy is quite high-profile of course, as the daughter of former u.s. president john f. kennedy. the threats are similar to those made against u.s. consul general based on the southern japanese island of okinawa. protests regularly pop up in okinawa over the location of u.s. military bases. and the presence of american troops stationed there. okinawa is home to roughly half of the 50,000 u.s. troops based in japan. the protests are nearly constant but are peaceful with no suggestion of violence. >> i'm bleeding here. i'm bleeding here. >> reporter: earlier this month the u.s. ambassador to south korea, mark lippert, was knifed ins face and arm. he received 80 stitches to close the wound on his face. his attacker screaming about korean unification. when we have traveled with ambassador kennedy we've seen her mixing freely with crowds with relatively unobtrusive security. while first lady michelle obama is in tokyo, she will be traveling to the u.s. embassy and is expected to meet with ambassador kennedy. jeff? >> all right. seth doane in beijing, thank you. this morning the secret service is investigating a letter sent to the white house that tested positive for cyanide. more testing ordered to confirm these results but major garrett is at the white house. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the letter never made it to the white house. like all letters addressed to the president or anyone on his senior staff the letter was screened first at an off-site facility here in the washington, d.c. area but miles from the white house. on monday the letter was submitteded for biological testing and the results were negative. the following day, a chemical screening test came back with a presumptive reading, positive for cyanide. now, that is a potential lethal toxin that attacks the heart and nervous system. now, the contents described to us as a milky substance inside a container now are undergoing further testing and the secret service will not comment on the criminal investigation of the origins of the letter the motive behind it or if any arrests are imminent. so far, no reports of exposure to cyanide. by the way, this white house letter processing facility really ramped up its ability to test for chemical and biological agents after the 9/11 terrorist attacks when anthrax-laced letters were sent to the white house and capitol hill. it processes about 1.2 million letters each year. major, thank you. breaking news, gunmen opened fire in a museum in the northern african country of tunisia. eight dead others held hostage. they believe they have the attackers sir attackers surrounded. we're monitoring developments from london. good morning. >> reporter: government officials said four bus loads of tourists were inside the museum when the attackers struck. the vast majority managed to escape. pictures of those fleeing, other unverified photos showed people cowering inside the museum. mid-day, three men dressed in what's described as military- military-style uniforms armed with grenades. once a popular tourist destination, they faced extremism since the arab spring in 20011 and overthrow of its president. some of those extremists are linked to isis sending foreign fighters to iraq syria and neighboring libya. charlie? >> thanks. this morning israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu is celebrating a big election victory. his main rival called to concede this morning. what this meaning for israel and relations with the united states. barry, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, charlie. well, prime minister netanyahu - is hard at work this morning forming a parliamentary coalition. no party won a simple majority but it's expected he won't have much trouble forming alliances, keeping him in power. transferred yesterday to another corrections facility in louisiana, because of a possible medical condition. he's facing drug and weapon charges there. and the million snare awaiting a murder trial in california for the death of a friend. vladimir dude dud yers is here. >> reporter: investigators may look at durst in the disappearance of two teenage girls in california in the mid-1990s. police cars were seen at durst's houston apartment tuesday, witnesses reportedly described officers carrying out two cardboard boxes. following the finale of the hbo documentary series "the jinx" on monday, durst was charged in the 2000 shooting death of his friend susan berman in california. outside a new orleans cows tuesday, durstarian maintained his client innocence. >> bob durst did not kill susan berman. he doesn't no who did. >> reporter: he was charged for the disappearance of his first wife in new york and 2003 equitted of the death and dismemberment of a texas man. and looking into the deaths are two teenage girl and kristen mont montfairy disappeared in june placing durst in the area around that time. five months late 16-year-old karen marie mitchell never seen again after leaving her aunt's store in california durst allegedly visited that store multiple times dregged in drag. a sketch appears similar to durst. this author reported extensively on durst insists there's a connection. >> before these cases even came up before the public he had been living this random bizarre lifestyle. durst had visited with or seen mitchell as a homeless shelter she volunteered at. >> reporter: california law enforcement have not responded to cbs "this morning" request for a comment on the two missing girls. durst may face the death penalty in california if convicted for the murder of susan charges. tairod pugh. showing how the alleged plot unravelled. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, just two weeks ago a southern california man was indicted for attempting to support isis. now a u.s. air force veteran is facing similar charges. u.s. investigators believe tairod pugh turned his back on this country and was preparing to join the terrorist group. the air force trained 47-year-old tairod pugh in the last 1980s to repair airplane engines and weapon systems. recently he been working in the middle east as a contractor when according to court documents on january 10th he flew from cairo, egypt, to istanbul turkey. u.s. investigators believe his plan was to join isis in syria, but he raised alarms when he told authorities in turkey he was with the united states special forces and sought to enter turkey for vacation. he was sent back to egypt and eventually deported to the united states. ♪ an fbi search of pugh's computer found 180 jihadist videos including one showing the apparent execution of syrian soldiers by isis militants. >> what you've seen here is greater international cooperation. no doubt. around the threat of foreign fighters flowing into the syrian conflict, but also potentially flowing back into western countries. >> reporter: the fbi also found a letter believed to be to his wife. i am a sword against the oppressor he wrote. only two possible outcomes for me. victory or martyr. u.s. law enforcement heard pugh's name before. according to the criminal complaint, the fbi says it received a tip in 2001 from someone who worked with pugh when he was an employee at american airlines. that person says pugh expressed support for osama bin laden. in the 1998 attacks on the u.s. embassies in kenya and tanzania. american airlines released a statement saying that pugh worked for the company for a few moss, and left in early 2000. pugh's attorney says his client will plead not guilty when he appears in court in about an hour. >> jeff, thanks. testimony will continue this morning in the boston marathon bombing trial. dzhokhar tsarnaev childhood friend testified yesterday. stefan soeba described tsarnaev's brother tamerlan as very strict and very opinionated. he testified he gave tsarnaev the gun prosecutors say killed m.i.t. police officer sean collier and also a foet other of tsarnaev posing under a flag commonly used by al qaeda and other extremist groups. kraft foods want you to check your pantry. the company recalling 6.5 million boxes of its original flavor macaroni and cheese. some customers found small pieces of too. in question are the 7.275 ounce boxes sold individually and in packs of three, four or five with best when used by dates between september 18th and october 11th of this year. the contaminated questions about real estate deals including the sale of his peoria home to a top donor for a figure that was reportedly well above market value. at first, schock tried to laugh off his critics saying haters are going to hate. >> i'm focused on doing my job. >> reporter: he tried to weather the storm hiring a p.r. team and his own lawyers to comb through his financial disclosure forms. >> when you rent a plane you go around your district. people can say, gee, seems out of touch. get it. okay? >> reporter: schock announced he would reimburse taxpayers for the $40,000 cost his "downton abbey" office. the allegations kept coming and his team may have told him it is time to cut bait. i do this we a heavy heart he said wednesday. the last few weeks have proven a great distraction from serving the 18th district of illinois. by leaving congress schock heads off an epics investigation but could face legal trouble and by the way folks, his instagram page has now been switched to private. >> hertz is defending its decision to install cameras inside some of its cars. sending racist and home ohphobic text messages. that brings the number of 14 officers accused in the san francisco police department. the alleged text messages between officers. we've got two blacks at my boy's traditionally a man and a woman. the change will take effect in june. this morning a university is dealing with fallout for a fraternity dealing with misconduct. a fraternity is sus spended after taking and sharing photos of women on a private facebook page. vinita nair is there this morning. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. even though they have been suspended for a year there are still members living in this house. about 150 people had access to this private facebook page which showcased graphic images of women, hazing and drug sales. the photos some included this police report show women allegedly passed out or asleep seemingly photographed without their consent. police say they were recovered from a once private facebook page created by members of the kappa kappa delta rho fraternity. >> they were primarily of fee maims undressed. they were disturbed. >> they believe the photos were taken here at the kappa delta rho house. we asked members for comments yesterday. >> are you guys -- >> no comment. >> you're on our property. in january a former kappa delta rho member alerted authorities of the facebook page. that had been taken down last year after a woman saw her image pulled down from a laptop in a frat house. she asked them to remove her photo but did not report the fraternity to authorities. they say in addition to the suspension they're conducting a full membership review and reorganization. chief gardner said they're waiting for the results of ooh a computer for ebb sick analysis to see who uploaded the photos. >> it's still in its infancy. we're trying to identify victims, how pervasive it's been, how long it's been going on, i can't say for sure. >> reporter: this comes on the heels of other fraternity problems. yid sig yesterday sigma kai university was suspended and last week the fra tern at the university of oklahoma was shut after a raucous chant. >> careful when you there, watch your drink make sure that you don't stay there don't sleep there. >> what goes through your head hearing those details? >> it's really upsetting to think how far back this culture goes and how much it's going take for us to change it. >> at this stage of the investigation, police are not commenting on how many women may have been victimized but they did tell us that so far there have been no arrests. jeff, it looks like both former and current frat members could be facing charges. >> thank you. this morning a university of michigan fraternity has been disbanded after vandalism on a ski trip. they caused more than $400,000 of damage at a ski lodge in northern michigan in january. criminal charges are still possible. they've been ordered to vacate their fraternity house by may. we could learn more today about starbucks controversial campaign. they're being asked to write write #racetogether on customers' cups. it's raising blistering responses on social media. let's start with some of the tweets. we've been reading feel good, liberalism at its worst. not sure what issue. i have to believe starbucks expected some sort of backlash but it seems it caught them a little off guard. certainly what fueled the fire is one of the top communications executives at starbucks deleted his tweter account amid some of this criticism and that really -- that gave people more fuel to go with. >> why was he hammered with that? >> because the campaign was about enkbajing in a dialogue about race and here were these consumers in a negative way were trying to engage with him and they felt like he was blocking them and then he deleted his account so he wasn't engaging with them at all. >> now it is back up i here. >> it is back up. >> starbucks released a statement saying quote, we didn't feel it would be easy but we realized the discomfort. >> you have to add to the fact that robert schultz has done this kind of thing in terms of gun control and other issues. >> a couple of years ago when there was a gridlock in d.c. in 2012 he asked baristas to write come together on cups. they had some experience. they met with their employees in cities like new york and l.a. oakland, st. louis, and asked them what they thought about what was going on with the race discussions in this country and that's where the race campaign came out of. >> what's the risk for starbucks? our dr. holly phillips is with us. good morning. we've all heard about the benefits of breast-feeding and now it transfers to adults? is that really it? >> that is it. a number of studies have suggest thad breastfeeding increases iq during childhood but we didn't know exactly how long those potential benefits lasted. this study looked at more than 3,000 kids in brazil and followed them for 30 years. it turns out compared to kids who were breast fed for a month, kids breast fed for a year or longer had four points longer in their iq,ed stay in school a year longer. that's the equivalent of the monthly equivalent in brazil. >> there were a number of things they were looking at and ultima ultimately they think it was breast-feeding. like the mother's education level, the parents' income the birth weight of the baby. a lot of things. >> exactly. there are a number of factors. >> but is there a suggestion that there's something about breastfeeding that increase yours iq other than the fact that it just does. >> there is that. threaten are a number of things. what studies like this run into problems with, the question is always is it the breast milk itself or is it the breastfeeding that can be the benefit? i think it's both. we know it has a number of nutrients that supports the developing brain and the nervous system. on the other hand the communication and bonding that happens during the breastfeeding process changes the brain physically. it make news rons connect with one another. that increases iq and it also boosts confidence which translates into achievement later in life. ily are a number of factors that are contributing here. >> what if you pump and then put it in the bottle? does that matter? >> well, yes. in terms of the nutrient benefits, yes. this study did focus primarily on physical breast-feeding. but one thing i think is important to point out, it's been great in the last 20 years. a lot of education about the benefits of breast-feeding but i think a lom of people feel a great sense of shame or guilt if they can't breast-feed for a year. they're not alone. only 27% of women in america breast-feed for a year. the number one reason why, the work force. not many jobs are conducive for you doing that for a year. don't beat yourself up. do what you can, know the benefits and that's it. >> jeff, you a baby on the way. >> yes. we're breast-feeding -- i mean i i'm not. one of the most popular collegiate programs doesn't involve basketball or football. omar villafranca takes us inside a sport that's drawing record crowds at the university of utd. >> reporter: if you didn't know anybody, this is what march madness looks like. but this sold out crowd at the university of utah huntsman center isn't here to watch a basketball game. they've come for the flips, twists, and dismounts of the nationally ranked women's gymnastics team. >> it's gymnastics meets super bowl. >> reporter: utah gymnastics has the highest attendance in women's college sports almost every year, attracting more fans than the basketball programs at tennessee and connecticut. even outdrawing the wnba. >> do you make money?
