now. >> and rocker chris cornell dead at the age of 52. good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. described as unblemished and unflappable, former fbi director robert mueller has been appointed special counsel to investigate the trump campaign's alleged ties to russia. mueller will have sweeping powers and the authority to prosecute any crimes he uncovers. his appointment caught both the white house and capitol hill off guard. president trump says he hopes the investigation concludes quickly. mueller was appointed fbi director by president george w. bush in 2001. he took office a week before the 9/11 attacks, serving for 12 years, preceding comey. hena daniels is here in new york. good morning, hena. >> good morning, anne-marie. deputy attorney general rod rosenstein will brief the full senate over the president's decision to fire james comey as fbi director last week. the development comes just day after the president interviewed four candidates for that position. a special counsel to the fbi's rush probe, robert mueller now has sweeping powers to investigate efforts to influence the 2016 election and related matters, matters likely to include president trump's abrupt firing of fbi director james comey last week and recent claims the president tried to get comey to end the bureau's investigation into his former national security adviser michael flynn. >> i think it was a very solid choice. >> it's good that we now have a focal point of somebody we all trust. >> under pressure deputy attorney general rod rosenstein made the decision wednesday, issuing a statement, saying in part, the public's interest requires me to place the investigation under the authority of a person who exercises a degree of independence from the normal chain of command. >> no politician in history has been treated worse or more unfairly. >> after speaking to graduating coast guard cadets, the president issued his own statement, maintaining the investigation will, quote, confirm there was no collusion between my campaign and any foreign entity. lawmakers in the house and senate have already been trying to figure that out. >> ultimately what we've always wanted is getting the facts, and we're going to continue pursuing all the facts. >> and yet another damning report out yesterday. "the new york times" claims flynn told the trump team before the inauguration he was under investigation for being a paid lobbyist for turkey during the campaign. the "times" reports flynn was hired despite this notification. meanwhile president trump will hold a joint press conference with colombian president juan juan manuel santos at the white house today. the visit comes just one day before his first overseas trip as commander in chief. anne-marie. >> hena daniels here in new york. thank you so much, hena. mueller's investigation may well include the firing of fbi director james comey and the alleged request by the president to end the investigation of michael flynn. there are three on capitol hill including the house oversight committee. its chairman republican jason chaffetz has scheduled a hearing for next wednesday, and scott pelley spoke to him last night. >> we've had a little bit of trouble contacting him. he's had a telephone change since he's left the department of justice. but we have formally noticed the hearing for next wednesday at 9:30 a.m., eastern time. i have some flexibility. it comes with an asterisk. we hope to hear from him and see the documents. remember, nobody's seen these documents. so we have to secure those documents as well. well, on wall street the so-called trump bump turned into the trump dump. jill wagner joins us from the new york stock exchange with more on the biggest losers in eight months. good morning, jill. >> good morning, anne-marie. investors are worried that the political crisis hitting the white house will derail president trump's economic plan for a major tax overhaul and deregulation. so that slammed the brakes on that post-election stock surge. the dow lost 372 points yesterday, wiping out about $300 billion in shareholder wealth. wednesday's dive is a stark contrast to two of trump's milestones, the surge the day after mr. trump was elected and a small bounce on inauguration day. still since the election the dow is up about 12.4%, the s&p is up about 10%. the vix index rose. it rose to its highest level in months. this morning, anne-marie, asian markets are trading lower in the wake of the wall street selloff. >> the ripple effect. jill wagner, thank you very much. we'll hear more later. and we are learning more about the classified intelligence the president gave to the russians last week. in of all plans by isis to bring down jetliners by hiding bombs in laptop computers. charlie d'agata reports. >> reporter: amid the bombed out ruins of mosul universe, it was discovered that isis can build a bomb that can pass through airports undetected. we it's long been believed that mosul university was the center of the military's bomb making process using the school's equipment and labs. u.s. officials believe that now includes a new generation of more powerful explosives that can be concealed in a computer. when isis overran mosul in 2014, they also captured the city's international airport and with it all the modern security scanner and equipment to test their new bombs. on our trip there were certain no-go areas. iraqi forces kept us away from most sensitive buildings, warning that isis had booby trapped them. a commander told us that isis had also torched some of the facilities if order to hide evidence, but it appears that what was left behind has given u.s. officials new cause for concern. the threat from isis has already led in part to the u.s. banning electronics from flights at ten airports from the middle east to africa. talks are now under way on whether to expand that ban to include cities in europe. charlie d'agata, bs news, london. well, a jury in oklahoma acquitted a white police officer in the shooting death of an unarmed black man. a lawyer for betty jo shelby says she is elated. terence crutcher's family was outraged by the verdict and says she got away with murder. don champion has our report. >> reporter: a jury in tulsa, oklahoma, found tulsa police officer betty jo shelby not guilty of first-degree manslaughter in the shooting death of 40-year-old terence crutcher last september. shelby shot crutcher on a city street after his suv stalled. she told police she thought he was reaching for a gun when she fired the fatal shots. the father of four was not armed and no gun was found in his vehicle. the prosecutor said crutcher was never a threat to shelby. he was walking away from her with his hands up when she shot him. >> terence was not an imminent threat. terence did not attack her. terence did not charge at her. terence was not the aggressor. betty shelby murdered my brother. >> reporter: betty jo shelby took the witness stand in her own defense. she thought he was on pcp and thought he would kill her. she told "60 minutes" she prayed she would not have to use legal force. >> i'm feeling his intent to do me harm. i kept thinking, please don't do this, please don't make this happen. >> no justice, no peace!
