a look at how low temperatures will go. t how low temperatures t how low temperatures will go. good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. this morning, president-elect trump plans to announce that exxonmobil chief rex tillerson is his choice for secretary of state. questions about tillerson's ties to russia come as congressional leaders say they support investigations into the possible russia cyber attacks to influence the election. hena daniels is here in new york. good morning. >> good morning, anne-marie. overnight, russian president vladimir putin said he's ready to meet with the next president of the u.s. in fact, he wants to give mr. trump time to form his administration first. >> reporter: president-elect donald trump hinted at his secretary of state announcement in a tweet. days after praising exxonmobil ceo rex tillerson in an interview with fox news. >> he's much more than a business executive. i mean, he's a world class player. >> reporter: the development came moments after top contender mitt romney a strident never-trump voice during the campaign confirmed in a facebook post that he was out of the running. saying, quote, my discussions with president-elect trump have been both enjoyable and enlightening. tillerson who has no government experience is expected to face an uphill climb in gaining senate confirmation. given close ties to russian president vladimir putin. lawmakers on both sides of the aisle say they support calls to investigate the ceo's assessment trying to get trump elected. >> i think we ought to approach all of these issues on the assumption that the russians do not wish us well. >> reporter: sources tell cbs news that president-elect will also nominate former texas governor rick perry to serve as secretary of energy. the very department he said he would abolish. after post post -- postponing his first meeting as president-elect, mr. trump took to social media last night to address plans for his business dealings. writing two of my children, don and eric, plus executives, will manage them. no new deals will be done during my years in office. president-elect is selected to announce mr. romney's niece for rnc chair. anne-marie. >> hena daniels, thank you so much. last night on the late show with trevor noah, president obama addressed the alleged russia interference in the presidential election. >> this was not a secret running up to the election. the president-elect in some of his political events specifically said to the russians, hack hillary's e-mails. so that we can finally find out what's going on. and confirm our conspiracy theories. >> now, it was at a campaign appearance back in july that mr. trump encouraged russia to spy on hillary clinton. >> russia, if you're listening, i hope you're able to find the 30,000 e-mails that are missing. >> mr. trump said he was only joking. he continues to dismiss reports that russia did anything to help him get elected. but the cia is standing by the assessment that russia tried to smear the election by leaking embarrassing e-mails. jeff pegues has details. >> reporter: the evidence that russia was trying to influence the election goes back to midjoin with private e-mails, opposition research and campaign information stolen before the democratic national committee appeared online. u.s. investigators said the russians were to blame. did their actions impact one candidate over another? >> i would say that the actions definitely were more detrimental to one candidate than the other. >> reporter: adam myers works for crowdstrike, the cyber security firm that investigated the hack and that works closely with u.s. intelligence. what did you see? >> imagine somebody breaks in a bank and they used some kind of special saw to cut through the safe. we found that saw as they were using it. >> reporter: so you caught them in action? >> we did. >> reporter: myers says the cyber attacks began with russian backers he nicknamed fancy bears and cozy bears. the information they obtained was passed on to wikileaks and made public. the hackers also gained access to some republican files but that information never became public. even after being exposed, the hacks against democrats continue. this is pretty bold, pretty brazen in a lot of ways. >> it's very russian. >> reporter: what do you mean by that? though. 15 since the election. the dow gained 39 points. the s&p lost 2 points. nasdaq was also down, losing over 32 points. the federal reserve starts a two-day policy meeting today. it's expected that the fed will raise short-term interest rates for just the second time since the financial crisis. the fed has held interest rates at record lows since the great recession hoping to drive economic growth. a group of 20 investors headed by bill gates is starting a $1 billion fund to develop clean energy. gates said the fund called breakthrough energy ventures plans to make its initial investment next year. the money will initially go to reducing greenhouse emissions, agriculture and manufacturing. quest diagnostics said its been hacked. quest said the health information of about 34,000 customers were exposed. the data includes names and lab results but not social security numbers or any financial information. affected quest customers have been notified by mail. american express says it's giving workers 20 weeks of both parental and mental leave. and also offering $35,000 for adoption services and infertility treatments. and there's a high-tech way to find out what kids want for had just seen the "book of mormon" on broadway. on facebook she wrote, the city was so beautiful, amidst all the lights, i got to look at the brightest light of all. my sweetie. i cried and we kissed. lawrence mckinney can't seem to stay still. the 60-year-old has spent enough time sitting in one place. how long were you in prison? >> 31 years, 9 months, 18 days and 20 hours. >> reporter: you have it down to the hours? >> yes, sir. >> reporter: a jury convicted mckinney of rape and burglary in 1978. the victim identified him as one of two men who attacked her in her bedroom. he was sentenced to 115 years. what's going through your mind when you're hearing that now you're going to prison? >> i still could not believe because i thought that it was a dream or something. >> reporter: in 2008, dna testing of evidence scientifically excluded mckinney as a suspect. prosecutors said if this evidence had been available, there would have been no prosecution. >> i don't have no life. all my life was took away. >> reporter: in 2009, he was released and given $75. since then, mckinney has depended on odd jobs at his church just to pay the bills. under tennessee law, he could be eligible for up to $1 million compensation. but the parole board which hears such cases has ejected his request twice. >> in exoneration hearings, we have a lot of evidence clear and convincing. she served on the parole board for 12 years. she heard mckinney's case. why wasn't the case by the district attorney clear and convincing enough for you? >> because they didn't notice they didn't test everything that was ordered by the original judge to be tested. >> reporter: prosecutors say the two samples not tested either had no dna or were so degraded tests could not be performed. do you feel there's a guilty man walking? >> i have not been convinced he's innocent. >> it's not justice for him to not receive compensation for being wrongfully imprisoned. >> reporter: mckinney's lawyer jack lauerery has appealed the case to bill haslem who has the final say. >> there's been one mistake made where he was sent to prison. i trust that another one is not made that does not allow him exoneration. >>
