studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquaters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm. >> lachina: -- i'm ann marie green. two new wildfires are burning out of control northeast of los angeles forcing the he evacuations of hundreds of homes. some 4500 acres have burned. the state's largest active fire engulfed nearly 8,000 acres. good morning. the good news is temperatures have cooled off and the winds have died down but that hasn't stopped big fires from popping upright next to home. the pair of fast moving wildfires continue to burn through brush in the mountains overnight as firefighters work to keep them from merging. >> there's a lot of homes here. >> the fires erupted monday amid an intense heat wave prompting hundreds of evacuations north of los angeles. >> we ask you to bring your medication and items of clothing in case the evacuation lasts longer than a day or two. >> it was sparked by a fatal car crash. less than two hours later the second started burning in the city of duarte. he fought to save his home. >> i felt lucky. it's scary. >> others packed up their pets and belongings and got out. >> you hope for the best. hope everybody is okay. >> the fast moving fire hit on a day that temperatures hit triple digits across southern california. the heat and rugged terrain making it difficult to get an upper hand. ash falling from the sky lead to more misery from residents. >> watching this fire made it worse so now we have ash falling. >> the heat wave will continue before expanding to the middle of the country. amazingly no structures have been damaged yet in this fire but in the process a sheriff's deputy suffered heat exhaustion and a firefighter did suffer minor injuries. cbs news in duarte, california. >> now politics and donald trump's former campaign manager corey lewandowski understands why he was fired. >> corey lewandowski has been by donald trump's side since the beginning of the campaign. but his relations with other trump aids republican officials and the press lead for frequent called for him to be fired. trump refused. >> i don't disguard people. i stay with people. >> he even stayed with him after he was charged with misdemeanor battery for grabbing a reporter by the arm. the report was dropped. but trailing hillary clinton in the polls, numbers have called for his head including trump's children. in a brief statement a trump spokeswoman said lewandowski will no longer be working with the campaign. >> i had a great privilege and an honor for being part of this for the last 18 and 19 months and i have no regrets. >> it comes amid a series of controversy. the latest followed the orlando massacre when trump tweeted appreciate the congrats for being right on radical islamic terrorism. he wished the club goers had been armed. even the nra said combining drugs and drinking is going too far. it leaves trump's chief strategist in charge. now they are trying to turn hill into a more conditioned candidate. a big change from the philosophy of let trump be trump. >> fund-raising is one problem the trump campaign is having. the latest information shows trump zbeting crushed by the clinton fund-raising operation. clinton's war chest totals more than $42 million while trump started the month with just under 1.3 million. trump attends a fund-raiser here in new york today while clinton is exelected to pabt him as unfit to lead the nation's economy during a speech in columbus ohio. a british man that said he wanted to kill donald trump is being held without bail in las vegas. at a trump rally type of action going on. the first call came in a half hour after the attack began. >> reporter: orlando gunman omar mateen identified himself as a islamic soldier and said to tell america to stop bombing syria and iraq and that is why he was out here right now. on monday the fbi released the transcript of the three calls between mateen and hostage negotiators during the rampage. >> we're not releasing the audio but while the killer made these murderous statements he did so in a chilling, calm, and deliberate manner. >> reporter: mateen also said there was a car with bombs outside the scene and you people are going to get it and i'm going to ignite it if they try to do anything stupid. some parts of the conversations were initially blacked out including mateen's pledge to isis. late monday the department of justice released a nonredacted version. still city officials refuse to release hundreds of other 911 calls they say out of respect to the victim's families. orlando police say they're defending themselves for criticism for how they responded to the shooting. the chief is not ruling out the possibility that some of the victims were shot by officers during the frantic search for mateen. >> that's part of the investigation but those killings are unsuspect. >> reporter: loretta lynch plans to meet investigators and survivors in orlando today. the latest gun control effort in the senate fell short. the senate voted down four separate gun control measures. lawmakers took up two separate issues which are background checks and how to ensure those with terrorist ties can't buy a gun. democrats and republicans introduced dualing bills. chris murphy lead last week's filibuster. >> i'm mort ified but not surprised by it. there's a vice like grip on this place even when 90% of the american public wants change. >> 55% of americans are in favor of stricter laws. 54% favor a ban on the manufacturing of and sale and also possession of semiautomatic weapons and 87% say those on the government terrorist watch list or no fly list should be prevented from owning guns. vice president joe biden discussed gun control and other issue during an interview with charlie rose. he cautioned that isolating muslims would damage u.s. security. >> if we don't cooperate, if we talk about them being not particularly useful or competent. if we go out there and there's 1.5 million muslims in the world. if we make the religion the enemy, where are we going to get the cooperation. >> but is that what donald trump is doing in your judgment? >> yes. >> you can see more of the rolled into the star trek star because he may not have put it into park properly. it's too early to know if the computerized shifter paid into the accident. the e-shift lacks the grooves and sensation of moving the car into park, drive or reverse and there's been more than 600 complaints about the vehicles not going into park and in some cases rolling away. in april they voluntarily recalled 1.1 million vehicles including the 2014 and 2015 jeep grand cherokees but company documents show the fix wasn't expected to be offered until at least july. cbs news first reported about this in march. extreme triple digit temperatures are blamed for five deaths over the weekend and the fbi released partial transcripts of calls between the orlando gunman and 911 operators. the calls started half an hour after the shooting began. he told the operator i'm in orlando and i did the shooting. he also warned there would be more attacks. stars of the broadway stage got together to help the victims of
