and saved from the flames. a bear cub gets a new lease on life and a new name. good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters in new york. i'm meg oliver in for anne-marie green. what is turning out to be a critical primary in new york is 11 days away. with each passing day, the democrats are sounding more like the republicans, unleashing trump. don champion is here in new york with much more. >> good morning, meg. the stakes are high for the presidential front-runners in new york, especially hillary clinton. her rival bernie sanders maintains he still has a path to the nomination and he believes it starts with winning new york. on the republican side, donal delegates. trump also picked up endorsement of former new york city mayor rudy giuliani. on the campaign trail, rival ted cruz building support in brooklyn and so-called new york values. >> what that means is the policies of liberal democratic politicians have been hurting the people of new york for a long, long time. >> reporter: running second in new york, john kasich said he is swaying support from trump and cruz. >> we are going to pick up delegates here and all over the northeast and down in maryland, and we are going to go to a convention. >> reporter: ahead of the new york primary, the democratic race is growing even more heated. in an interview with cbs' charlie rose thursday, bernie sanders was unapologetic saying rival hillary clinton is not qualified for president. >> if we are getting attacked every single day by the clinton campaign, i want them to know, we are going to respond in kind. >> reporter: clinton, who leads sanders by ten points in the state, fired back. >> i'm going to trust the voter of new york who know me and have voted for me three times. >> reporter: wyoming will hold a democratic caucus tomorrow. now there are only 18 total delegates up for grabs for the democrats tomorrow. here in new york, 291 total are on the line. sanders and clinton will be campaigning again across the state today. meg? >> don champion here in new york for us, thank you. back to charlie rose's interview now with bernie sanders. charlie pressed the senator on whether he believes former secretary of state hillary clinton has a resume for the oval office. >> do you believe secretary clinton is unqualified to be president? >> well, does secretary clinton believe that i am unqualified to be president? >> why can't you simply say yes? she has some of the -- a first-rate resume -- >> absolutely. >> in terms of a life and public service and she is one of the most qualified people. >> she has -- >> to run. >> -- years of experience. >> what should she say? >> i have some experience too. i have a pretty good record in congress, as a senator, as a mayor. i think i am qualified to be president. so to answer your question, you're right, we should not get into this tit for tata and we should be debating the issues facing america. all i am saying if the people are going to attack us and distort our record, as has been the case time and time again, i'm going to respond. >> this could happen to anyone but hillary clinton's ride on a new york city subway yesterday didn't go as smoothly as she had hoped. it took the senator five tris to get the subway card to work. she eventually got through. john kasich clearly has a stomach for new york politics. kasich downed two plates of spaghetti and half a sandwich during a campaign stop at a deli yesterday in the bronx. former president bill clinton confronted protesters during an appearance for his wife in philadelphia. the protesters took issue with the impact his 1994 prime reforms have had on black americans. black lives matter activists have circulated video of hillary clinton defending the reforms, calling young people super predators. >> i don't know how you would characterize the gang leaders who got 13-year-old kids hooked up on crack and sent them down on the street to murder other african-american children! maybe you thought they were good citizens! she didn't! >> hillary clinton has said since she regretted her language. coming up on "cbs this morning," we will discuss the presidential campaign with former republican candidate senator lindsey graham. this morning, an intense search is under way for a man who escaped from a washington state psychiatric hospital. anthony garver was seen purchasing a bus ticket from seattle to spokane. he is considered armed and dangerous. garver and another man escaped from a hospital the other night. the other man was captured. garver is accused of torturing a woman to death but found too mentally ill to stand trial. police in texas are looking for a suspect of a university of texas student's murder. police are looking for this man on the bike. this video was taken on sunday night on the area on campus where the body of 18-year-old haruka weiser was found. she was last seen sunday night leaving the classroom of a building. her body was discovered in a creek. investigators are hoping a new evidence leads to the arrest in the brussels terror attack. holly williams walks us through the so-called video of the "man in the hat." >> reporter: we don't know his name and his face is a blur, but if he is caught, the man in the hat, as he is now known, could reveal vital information about isis cells in europe. the two other men in this security camera image blew themselves up in brussels airport, killing 16 people. but the new video shows the third man walking away and then into the heart of the city. at one point, he breaks into a slow jog, but the rest of the time, he appears calm. his distinctive jacket disappears in the later videos and police hope that if it's discovered, it could help them find him. he's last seen here, nearly two hours after the airport bombings, in this scarvick neighborhood, where a police raid targeted the apartment the three men set off from, finding bomb making materials and an isis flag. after missing clues that an attack might be eminent, the belgian authorities are under pressure to find the man in the hat, but he could be hiding in plain sight. salah abdeslam, the suspected logistics man behind the attacks in paris in november was able to hide out in brussels for four months before he was finally captured. it's thought he relied on friend in the neighborhood where he grew up, an area that has now become infamous as a breeding ground for extremists. holly williams, cbs news. a victim of the brussels attack is back home in utah and says he is lucky to be alive. joseph empey, a mormon missionary, was at the brussels airport. he had just gotten online to check in when the first bomb went off a few feet away. it took him a while to regain consciousness. >> is there lots of debris, lots of smoke. there is a few fires, and there are people running out of the building, there are people that are laying on the ground. and it was pretty scary. >> empey suffered severe burns and his lower body was riddled with shrapnel. a ride hailing company uber will pay $10 million to settle a lawsuit alleged. prosecutors say uber falsely claimed of those drivers. uber says it's changed the way it checks out prospective drivers. coming up on the "morning news." freeway follies. a police chase in los angeles ends with people cheering the su huge drug bust. this is the "cbs morning news." i've been on my feel all day. i'm bushed! yea me too. excuse me...coming through! ride the gel wave of comfort with dr. scholls massaging gel insoles. they're proven to give you comfort. which helps you feel more energized ...all day long. i want what he has. hey spray 'n wash is back...ws?
