Awesome glor good evening. Im jeff glor and this is our western edition. Were going to begin tonight with the controversy over an emergency. In dozens of cities on this president s day there were protests over the president s decision to declare a National Emergency so money can be spent to build a wall on the southern border. On friday during the announcement the president predicted lawsuits would follow. And that is coming true. Here hes nancy cordes. He would rather see his people starve. Reporter as the president spoke out against a venezuelan dictator trump must go trump must go reporter protesters from newark to denver said hes the one overstepping his authority. Weve got to keep fighting against this emergency. The president s Emergency Declaration also became the target of a lawsuit being filed by roughly a dozen states. The president admitted that there is not a basis for the declaration. He admitted there is no crisis at the border. I didnt need to do this. Reporter the declaration he signed on friday enables mr. Trump to redirect funds and seize property to build a border wall quickly. A couple hundred miles of wall by mid 2020, according to white house Senior Advisor stephen miller. If the president cant defend this country, then he cannot fulfill his constitutional oath of office. Reporter democrats say it is a power grab and plan to introduce a joint resolution of disapproval as early as next week. Its likely to pass with help from republicans like will hurd. Theres going to be over 1,000 ranchers and farmers potentially impacted if the government comes in and takes their land. Reporter the white house says it will cover the cost with a pair of Defense Department funds totaling 6 billion. Critics say that money was set aside to build schools and housing on military bases. The president s allies say those projects can wait. I would say it is better for the middle school kids in kentucky to have a secure border. Well get them the school they need. Reporter even if the house and senate pass that joint resolution aimed at repealing the president s Emergency Declaration, it is unlikely to do much more than send a message. That is because the president s aides say he will veto the resolution, his First Official veto, jeff, of his presidency. Glor okay, nancy, thank you very much. Today the president fired back at Andrew Mccabe the former deputy f. B. I. Director who told 60 minutes of a discussion he says he had about possibly removing the president. Major garrett has todays developments. Reporter President Trump said nothing about Andrew Mccabes startling statements during his speech today in florida. But he let loose on twitter. Wow, so many lies, the president wrote, noting mccabe was fired for lying, and branding his story even more deranged. Mccabe told 60 minutes Deputy Attorney general Rod Rosenstein in the chaotic days after the president fired f. B. I. Director james comey, suggested wearing a wire to record mr. Trump as part of an f. B. I. Investigation into possible obstruction of justice. Now, he was not joking. He was absolutely serious. And in fact he brought it up in the next meeting we had. Reporter mccabe also said rosenstein discussed how the cabinet might use the 25th amendment to remove mr. Trump from office. It was really something that he kind of threw out in a very frenzied chaotic conversation about where we were and what we needed to do next. Reporter senator lindsey graham, chairman of the judiciary committee, vowed to call mccabe and rosenstein to testify under oath. Was this an attempted bureaucratic coup . I dont know. I dont know who is telling the truth. Reporter mccabe, referencing a conversation the president had with another f. B. I. Official, accused mr. Trump of discounting u. S. Intelligence on north korea. The president said he did not believe that the north koreans have the capability to hit us here with Ballistic Missiles in the United States and he did not believe that because president putin had told him they did not. Reporter democratic president ial candidate Kamala Harris weighed in while campaigning in new hampshire. The idea that the president of the United States would take the word of the head of russia over the head of the Intelligence Community is the height of irresponsibility. Reporter the Justice Department said rosenstein never authorized a wire recording of the president and was in no position to invoke the 25th amendment. At this point the president has not specifically denied the accusation he accepted putins word over that of u. S. Intelligence. Jeff . Glor major garrett, thanks. And cbs news affiliate wbbm says multiple sources confirm smollett was upset that the letter incident did not grab enough attention, so he orchestrated the attack a week later. Look at my neck, that is a real artist. Reporter smollett says he was beaten by racebaiting homophobes yelling this is maga country who draped a rope around his neck, but the brothers told the police smollett directed them to buy the rope which they did at this store. And now the cops have the receipt. Smollett says he is being victimized a second time by the doubters. It feels like if i had said it was a muslim or a mexican or someone black, i feel like the doubters would have supported me a lot much more, a lot more. Reporter the police are very publicly requesting another interview with smollett and are no longer calling him a victim. Now he is merely the individual who reported the incident.
