Captioning sponsored by cbs this is the cbs evening news. Jeff good evening, im jeff glor. This is our western edition. It is not an easy fix. The officials in chicago said today they have to rebuild an entire f. A. A. Radar system. Air travel in this country will not be normal for days. All of this comes after a fire on friday night, when a contractor tried to kill himself after setting a fire inside a facility that serves both chicagos ohare and midway airports. More than 700 flights were canceled today. We begin with correspondent jeff pegues. Air Traffic Controllers say the air Traffic Control outside chicago is unlike anything theyve seen before. Critical Communications Equipment to manage planes in the skies will have to be replaced. Its not clear how long that will take. But without this facility up and running, there will continue to be significant disruptions to air travel in the region. This is day three of delays and cancellations, as airlines advise passengers to adjust their plans. Today we were supposed to take off. Reporter some airlines are reporting progress. Delta says it didnt cancel any flights into or out of chicago today related to fridays fire. The faa says it has been able to suddenly increase air traffic and reduce delays. The agencys approach has been to shift air Traffic Management to other regional radar facilities. Now those facilities have had to call in additional help managing planes taking off and landing in chicago. Aviation analyst josh marks says its less than efficient. The faa air Traffic Control center is still based on technology from the 1950s. It has limited flexibility. Jeff the system is put to the test this weekend and the days ahead has more challenges. Ken button with george mason university. Is this the best back up plan they can come up with . I think the rarity of these incidents suggest if you have a system everywhere the cost would be astronomical and unacceptable. These things do happen in a very minor scale. This is unique as far as i know. Air Traffic Controller say this is one of the most challenging situations they have faced since 9 11. Without chicagos center, theyre having to juggle jobs they normally just dont do. Jeff, we just learned the faa the Chicago Center wont be up and running for another two weeks, october 13th. Jeff, thank you very much. The driver of a truck that hit a bus friday night has offered an explanation for a crash that killed four college students. But his statements leaves many questions unanswered. Manuel bojorquez has details. Many of the softball players on the bus were asleep when the crash happened. 18yearold Caylee Armstrong was awake, but never saw the semi coming. I blacked out and i dont remember landing. I dont remember the crash ending. Next thing i know, im awake. Im on my feet and i hear my coach screaming, girls this way. 15 members of the North Central Texas College Softball Team were aboard. Their coach was driving them back from a game in oklahoma friday night when the semi crossed the median on interstate 35, sheering off one side of the bus. Four players were killed including 20yearold brook deckard, who had become one of armstrongs best friends. To lose someone i got so close to so quick. It is crazy. I mean, when i heard about it, i just started crying. Reporter the truck driver, 53year old Russell Staley told the investigators he was distracted by something in the cabin. But investigators say theres no evidence he tried to make a maneuver before the crash before striking the bus. Robert somwalt is with the National Transportation safety board. Currently there is no driver interview scheduled yet, but that is something that is very important to us. No charges have been filed. In the small towns where the softball players come from, memorials are being held. Family and friends of 19year old Megan Richardson circled the High School Pitchers mound where she played last year, and across the country College Softball teams are also honoring the lady lions by dedicating their game to the team. There will be a vigil tonight here on the campus of North Central Texas College. Jeff, two softball players are still in the hospital. They are expected to survive. Reporter okay, manny, thank you. A jihadist twitter account says the leader of an alqaeda offshoot was killed in a u. S. Airstrike five days ago. The White House Camp immediately confirmed that report. The u. S. Led coalition launched weekend attacks on isis targets in syria, including this one near the turkish border. During an interview with steve kroft on tonights 60 minutes, president obama says they misjudged the threat by isis. How did they end up with control of so much territory . Does that come as a complete surprise to you . I think the head of the Intelligence Community jim clapper, has acknowledged that. I think they under estimated what had been taking place in syria. Essentially what happened with isil was that you had alqaeda in iraq which was a vicious group, but all marines were able to quash with the help of sunni tribes. They went back underground, but ast couple yearsuple years during the chaos of the Syrian Civil War where essentially you have huge slots of a country that are completely ungoverned. They were unable to reconstitute themselves and take advantage of that chaos. And attract foreign fighters who believed in their jihadist nonsense and traveled everywhere from europe to the United States to australia to other parts of the muslim world converging on syria. So this became ground zero for jihadists around the world. And this is one of the challenges that were going to have generally is where you get states that are failing or in the midst of civil war. These kinds of organizations thrive. Thats why its so important for us to recognize part of our solution here is going to be military. We have to push them back and theink their space and go after their command and control and off thcapacity and their weapons end fueling and cut off their financing and work to eliminate ed jflow of foreign fighters. You mentioned James Clapper the director of national intelligence. He didnt just say that we underestimated isil. Y anays we overestimated the ability and the will of our allies, the iraqi army to fight. Thats true. Thats absolutely true. Glor you can see the full interview with president obama later this evening on 60 minutes. Glor all right, julianna ndank you. R amidterm elections are just five weeks from this tuesday and andblicans believe they can pick up the six seats they need to control the senate. Congressional correspondent nancy cordes is on the trail co covering these key contests. They joins us from denver. Nancy, can the key democrats hold the senate if they lose ey losdo . Well, mathematically jeff, it is possible, but if the udmocratic senator here mark udall cant eke out a victory its unlikely his fellow democrats incumbents in states like arkansas and alaska are going to fare very well. His biggest problem is the president s popularity has plummeted here and thats dragging udall down too. Biggesmade the case to me he has stood up to the president on all kinds of issues while his hasnent, corey gardner, is working to tie udall to the president as much as possible. T asancy, also visited one of ited ow states where the hepublican Senate Candidate is in trouble and thats in kansas. One of the reddest states in the country. What is happening kansas . Well pat roberts is kind of facing udalls problem in reverse. Hes being dragged down by a very conservative governor even some republicans feel has pulled the state too far to the right. Greg orman, hes a businessman and hes tied in some polls and this has National Republicans very worried because if they lose that seat, jeff, it gets much harder for them to rotate the senate.
