[ screaming ] >> yes, two brawls in two days. and it gets better. world heavyweight boxing champion vitale klitschko heads one of the political parties involved in the mess. that was him in the purple tie. he heads the punch party. we can not make that up. fortunately for his opponent klitschko just chose to stand by and look on. he didn't join in the brawl. so what was going on outside parliament during all of this? okay. that's another political party frustrated with the developments. they chose to saw through protective fencing that surrounds the building. this was some kind of political statement about parliamentary procedure. so as you watch the "fiscal cliff" negotiations in washington, try to remember... it could be worse. >> yeah? makes the protests here look tame. >> mild. so you get a gift card from someone and head off to the store. right? only to find it's worth nothing. it's happening to a number of people these days. what a major retailer has to say about the problem. >> in the beginning, there was google maps. then there was apple maps. behold the triumphant return. just how many people are finding their way back to google. ,, ,,,,,,,, ,,,,,, out of 5 stars. the app has turn-by-turn navigation... live traffic info... and public irections -- all google map is back on the iphone and users are giving it 5 out of 5 stars. it has turn by turn navigation live traffic info and public transportation directions all of which were missing or problematic on apple's map app. the response has been immediate. google maps became the most popular free app on the iphone just after the change was announced. this is the time of year a lot of us buy, give and get those gift cards. well, now some macy's gift card recipients are getting a surprise when they try to redeem their presents. as cbs 5 consumerwatch reporter julie watts reports, it's not a pleasant surprise. >> reporter: when ed sousa tried to spend his macy's gift card yesterday. >> she said there's zero balance on this card. and i said, that can't be. i haven't used it yet. >> reporter: his second card was no good either. his mother purchased them at a northern california safeway. and ed says they have been tucked away in a drawer for more than a year. >> the gift card representative who said that these cards were already used, i'm like, where? she said, well one of the places was online. i don't shop at macy's online. >> reporter: we found similar complaints from other macy's gift cardholders who say they too just learned their $100 gift cards were worthless. it's not just macy's. two years ago a batch of best buy gift cards sold at lucky's and safeway stores had zero balances, as well. >> it's embarrassing when you hand it out. people don't know what to think. >> reporter: back then the problem was tampering. scammers scratching off the pin code and registering the card so once it was purchased they could use the money first. souza believes that's what happened to him as he noticed his code was exposed when he opened the gift card packaging yesterday. tonight macy's confirms it did have a problem with tampered cards several years ago and it's possible these are part of the leftover stock. it's also possible there's a new round of tampering. >> tough luck. >> reporter: but macy's says to call the number on the back of the card and macy's will replace it. but always check the back of the card before you purchase it to make sure that activation number is not exposed. and if you are the one gifting the card, attach the activation receipt so it can be used as evidence if the card doesn't work. on the consumerwatch, julie watts, cbs 5. good evening to you, meteorologist paul deanno with your forecast. cbs 5 hi-def doppler is dry right now but we are going to be doing a really, really good seattle impersonation. find out when it's going to begin and how about an outlook all the way through christmas? i have that for you coming up next. baseball's biggest slugger makes a decision. was it with the giants? i'm dennis o'donnell and we are going to go one on one with jim harbaugh as the 49ers get set for their biggest game of the year. come on, smile. smile. smile. y wirelevers. blah blah blah. if i had a sleepover, i couldn't just move the tv into the playroom. no. we had to watch movies in the den because that's where the tv outlet was. and if dad was snoring on the couch, we muscled through it. is she for real? your generation has it made. [ male announcer ] the wireless receiver only from at&t u-verse. get u-verse tv for $29 a month for six months. secondhand smoke affects everyone's health. it's not just irritating. it can cause heart disease and even death. speak up about secondhand smoke. your health and the health of your family depend on it. if we had gotten that high tide two weeks ago when we had the big storms coming that could have been bad. >> that would have been a major problem. we already had too much water. now we have the ocean fighting us, as well. thankfully the two events were split apart from each other. king tide and abnormally high tide this morning because we had the normal lunar tide, the earth was close to the sun and moon. add that together, very high water level rises in the ocean and bay this morning. tonight very big drops in temperature. check out concord, 35. livermore 33. fremont you'll drop down to 35. redwood city 37. so we're already chilly outside tonight. we're going to get cold. clear skies and weather nicer than the traffic on the 680 corridor had from our dublin cam. a lot of folks on the road but at least no rain out there yet. that will be different come tomorrow. cbs 5 hi-def doppler is mainly dry tonight. toward friday and the weekend though we have a big change to talk about. there is a huge dip in the jet stream which is about 12 to 18 hours away from making it to here to the bay area to san francisco. you can see that huge trough right there in the jet stream and there's some cold canadian air. that will rush in behind that and this is just the first of many low pressure areas that will be moving through over the next let's say 8 to 14 days all the way through christmas. so here it comes. it will get here tomorrow. it's raining in western washington and oregon. that rain will make it down to the bay area in northern california by tomorrow afternoon and after that there's another low pressure area, after this another low pressure area and about five more after that. so bottom line we're stuck in this pattern, high pressure too far away to keep us dry. it's all about this unsettled weather coming down from the arctic keeping us pretty wet for the next say five to seven days and our extended forecast, the climate prediction center in washington, d.c. going all the way to 14 days. and they are trending very wet for all of coastal california including the bay area all the way through december 27th. so right now it looks soggy in our forecast. tomorrow morning cloudy, showers tomorrow afternoon, temperatures will remain well below normal for the next several days . temperatures in the low 50s tomorrow. oakland 53. it really isn't that far from average but will feel chilly with the rain outside. palo alto 51. campbell 52. friday dub, pleasanton, livermore 50. we won't hit 50 for san rafael, santa rosa barely making it to 50 with afternoon showers in mill valley. a whole lot of 50s out there. drier on saturday. showers back on sunday, rain on and off on monday, showers continue on tuesday. and we may eke out another dry day toward the middle of next week. it will be cooler and wetter. great news if you are a skier. here's your ski report. a base of anywhere from 18 to 64" at northstar, heavenly looking quite heavenly for skiers, 10" of new snow just today with an excellent base and kirkwood all 15 lifts are open, a 42 to 50" base with a foot of new snow just over the past 24 hours. so good news for skiers. we have a series of special guests with roberta gonzales. >> they are our guests and friends. good evening. it is time for "food for bay area families." and our friends have joined us here tonight with their commitment to help feed the local here in the bay area. and we have captain chelsea sullenberger. you don't need an introduction. >> call me sully, roberta. >> reporter: sully! it's always good to see you. we have kevin young from gilead sciences. paul ash from san francisco marin food bank and ethan. you have been doing such good work in the community feeding our local people. thank you. we given with kevin young. tell me, you have been involved with "food for bay area families" since 2006. why is this so dear to you and those that work at gilead? >> first, roberta, thank you for the invitation to be here this evening. gilead sciences' home is in the bay area. we have been here for 25 years. we're very committed to this community and the great work that the food bank does incredibly committed people providing nutritious food at this important time of the year to people in need in the bay area. we're delighted to be associated with this marvelous organization. >> reporter: and you have a marvelous donation tonight, don't you? >> yes, we do. at these challenging times we're delighted to make the donation to the san francisco food bank. >> drum roll for this one here. look at this! >> $133,000! >> absolutely. these people do truly, truly magnificent work. and our employees are so proud to be associated with this organization. >> okay. paul and ethan, how does this do work for the food banks? >> well, this is a significant gift and it's going toward helping us acquire fresh produce, rice, beans, eggs, hundreds of thousands of food in people's homes of who otherwise wouldn't have food. >> reporter: you said we started off slow as far as our donations were concerned back in july, august and september. how are we faring today? >> it's moving up starting to balance to where we're back on budgets. we are crossing our fingers in the last couple of weeks of the year that people remember to write checks and support the food bank as these two gentlemen have. >> not only checks but they can go into grocery stores and buy bags of goodies just as sully has. sully i have worked with you in a number of different organizations. you are so giving your time with best buddies but how did you get involved with the food bank? >> my family and i know that there are a lot of us in the bay area who are not as fortunate. there's great need and so you can bring non-perishable food but even more important go to the food bank website and there's seven ways to donate. each donation can help a family in need. >> reporter: seven ways. >> yes. seven ways. let me start by giving ethan this bag of groceries. it's a big one. can you handle this? thank you, man. >> reporter: i think ethan now what to do with that bag of groceries because i have seen you sorting food, right? >> yeah. >> reporter: how long have you been involved with the food bank and all the your contributions and as far as your time is concerned? >> a long time. >> reporter: how old are you now? >> 10. >> reporter: if ethan can help, i think you can at home, as well. if you do want to help, visit us online at cbssf.com. cbssf.com/food. eyewitness news will be will continue right after this brief time out. ,,,, ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, they went out and signed fr agent josh hamilton, puttino of baseball's biggest sluggs in the the april gels couldn't beat the as with pujols so today they signed free agent josh hamilton putting two of baseball's biggest sluggers in fact same line-up. the 2010 american league most valuable player signed a reported five-year $125 million deal with the angels. hamilton hit a career-high 43 home runs, drove in 128. i want to show you the line-up right now. the best in baseball. mike trout, hamilton, and two others combined for 125 home runs in 2012. the giants were rumored to be in the hamilton sweepstakes. after a year with the mets andres toros is coming back. torres signed a one-year deal worth $2 million. he will likely be the giants fourth outfielder. raiders got an extension to sell more tickets for sunday's game against the chiefs. this is a possible indicator that the raiders may be on television. we'll tell you tomorrow. the chiefs have been worried about more than football. yesterday they attended a memorial service of javon belcher the kansas city player who killed his girlfriend and then himself. belcher didn't show many warning signs before the incident and quarterback brady quinn expressed the situation like this. >> we live in a society of social networks and twitter pages and facebook and that's fine and stuff but, you know, we have contact with our work associates, our family and friends and seems like half the time we're more preoccupied with our phone and other things instead of relationships we have in front of us and hopefully people can learn from this and try to actually figure out if someone is battling something deeper on the inside than what they are revealing on the day to day basis. the 49ers meet the patriots in what some are calling the a super bowl preview. we'll break it down saturday at 7:30 on 49ers preview. the coaches are anything but when talking about the media. >> i wouldn't get too tied up with words. >> we have a big challenge in front of us this week. >> yeah. we have talked a little bit. >> i'm sure coach harbaugh said it. i'm sure it's right. >> let me stay away from categorizing anything. >> what are the considerations? to win. >> uhm.... -- >> uhm.... >> uhm....... >> tom brady said something interesting this week that he started studying the 49er defense actually in november. how many guys can actually do that? >> not many. very interesting. very complimentary also. the greatness of tom brady is well documented. he is a great football player. he is a great competitor. and probably the, you know, one of the greatest of all times. so we're excited to compete against him. we are up for the challenge and we're look forward it. >> have you ever done the freedom trail in boston? >> no. >> really? and you're a history buff. but basically it takes you through the history and paul revere's house and the old north church and the uss constitution. it's -- if you are completely bored at 2 a.m. in the morning on saturday night, it's a good thing for you to do. take your mind off the game a little bit. >> we'll be staying in providence. >> oh. well, forget that.
