scattered nothing really well organized with the system moving through this morning. so scattered showers throughout the day, and it's cold enough that we could see a couple of snowflakes across the mountaintops. here's the clouds sliding through. when you get this cold air, the back side of the cold front, you can see more showers this morning but toward the afternoon, things begin to taper off a bit. still temperatures are pretty chilly outside even with some of the clouds out there. down to 41 degrees in san jose. 45 in santa rosa and 46 degrees in concord. toward the afternoon, temperatures are going to stay very cool and it's going to be breezy and we have some big waves to watch out for there and for more on that, let's go to gil diaz at fort point in san francisco. >> reporter: we are near the mouth of the bay a few feet away from the edge because every once in a while we'll get a splash or two over the edge. high surf advisory is in effect until 9:00 this morning. swells from the northwest could reach heights up to 18 feet and some areas with breakers up to 20 feet. now, we could see huge waves like we did just a couple of weeks ago at pacifica pier. it's unbelievable that people actually stand at that pier during a high surf. these waves are kind of cool. they are kind of awesome. but they also are dangerous. rip currents are dangerous and can be fatal. so be careful. this high surf advisory in effect until 9 a.m. back to you. >> thank you. >> has it gotten worse since you have been there this morning? >> reporter: it's amazing the waves are pretty big out here sense we're not near the ocean but at the mouth of the bay but yeah, we weren't expecting this. hopefully it will stay this way and i'll stay dry throughout the morning. >> what a backdrop, golden gate bridge? gorgeous this morning. gil diaz, thank you. the storm is making for bad conditions up north. there is an avalanche warning in the sierra this morning. this is because of intense snowfall recently, a weak snowpack this year and winds up to 90 miles per hour. there is poor visibility on highways and it has prompted caltrans to impose a 30-mile- per-hour speed limit from colfax to near the nevada border. forecasters are predicting up to five feet of snow in some areas by today so you better watch out when you're on the road. >> think i'm going to stay here and not drive up 80. how about traffic, elizabeth? >> interstate 80 has chain requirements this morning on 80 from gold run all the way towards tahoe. also highways 50 and 88. we'll have a live look along the freeway heading towards the sierra coming up. first an oakland accident near the coliseum. northbound 880 by the eastbound 80 connector ramp there was a fatal overnight accident reported about two hours ago. chp just left the scene so now all lanes are open. it was a serious problem overnight. the golden gate bridge so far, so good. no issues all across the span right now into san francisco. coming up, we'll get a check of the south bay. stormy weather and tornadoes are now linked to at least a dozen deaths in middle america. people in parts of illinois, kansas, kentucky, missouri an tennessee are dealing with extensive damage like this. the storm prediction center says at least 16 tornadoes having record just since tuesday night. hardest hit was harrisburg an illinois town of about the,000 people. 6 people were killed there when blocks of homes were flattened. today is the deadline for prosecutors in ohio to file charges against the suspect in a deadly high school shooting. charges against this person, tj lynn, are expected to include three counts of aggravated murder. prosecutors will likely ask that the 17-year-old boy be tried as an adult. three students died, two wounded. one is released from the hospital after monday's shooting at chardon high school. class resumes tomorrow but students plan to march to the school today from the town's main square. school is back in session today at east avenue middle school in livermore. it was locked down for two hours yesterday. a woman called 911 after claiming she saw a man armed with a rifle on campus. police searched every classroom, every arrest room and every office but found nothing suspicious. police haven't confirmed the gunman was even there. kids went home at about 7:00. a redwood city teacher is scheduled to be arraigned this morning for allegedly abusing children. 43-year-old alexia bogdis is accused of physically abusing two young children with special needs. she is currently on administrative leave from the school district. the abuse allegedly happened at roosevelt elementary school. the bay area news group reports that the redwood school district plans to discipline six employees for failing to report the allegations. that's required by law. those employees are not expected to face any criminal charges. >> march 1, today is a day of action across the country. students in various schools are involved. anne makovec at berkeley berkeley with today's events on the cal campus at uc-berkeley. >> reporter: good morning. the participants include students, workers and faculty here at cal. and then the protest grows larger because they are going to march over to oakland to continue this day of protest and merge with other east bay campus protestors. it's a davenport of action. it's been going on for the past fewer years on march 1. this time, "occupy" cal is joining forces with the movement. this morning's protest starts at 7:30 outside of california hall. that is where much of the upper cal administration works. protestors say they are targeting the admin's role in privatizing the system and repression of "occupy cal" over the past several months. the larger message here calling on governor brown to reject any budget deal that includes education cuts or tuition hikes. they are also supporting tax hikes on the rich to help pay for education. now, they are going to be rallying at sproul plaza at noon and it is after that, that they are going to start marching to oakland and there's going to be a big rally outside of oakland city hall at 5:00 this evening. back to you. >> thank you, anne makovec. it is 5:07. violence in afghanistan. >> the gunmen who turned their weapons on two coalition troops. also ahead. >> does eliana have anything to say. she doesn't have anything to say other than this is bull [ bleep ]. how's that? >> more rain on the way of course some showers yesterday. some reports of some hail around the bay area yesterday afternoon. today could be another interesting day outside. if you are a cloud connoisseur, yeah, this is going to be your kind of day. a lot of those billowing cumulus clouds, cumulonimbus if we're lucky. north bay most of the activity at this time. this is sliding to the south. you can see by our doppler, mount vaca we are seeing some mixed precipitation probably some sleet maybe snow. we could see more of that across the higher mountain peaks so look toward the higher mountains today and you might see a little dusting of snow. out the door, a chance of some showers. high surf continuing toward the coastline. watch out for that. that high surf advisory in effect until 9:00 this morning. this afternoon we'll see partly cloudy skies. still a slight chance of maybe leftover showers definitely cool temperatures again well below average for this time of year. here's your system sliding through. the main cold front is gone a couple of waves of energy diving in out of the gulf of alaska so cold air in place will pop up showers outside for today. also speaking of showers, plenty of snow in the high country. maybe another two feet of snow above 5500 feet. winter storm warnings continuing there until 4:00 in the afternoon. so be very careful if you are traveling in the sierra nevada. some of the winds gusting to 60 miles per hour. high pressure though getting ready to build in behind the stadium. what a change we'll see in the next couple of days. scattered showers throughout the bay area today. then we start to settle down into the afternoon. and then it looks like things come to an end. temperatures will be in the 50s outside. next couple of days temperatures up 20 degrees over the weekend offshore winds howling around the bay area over the higher peaks. sunshine some of the temperatures up into the 70s so big changes, snow in the sierra nevada if you are heading up there today. winter storm warning until noon and tapers off. >> good. >> just for you frank. >> i'll be going up there around 5:00. >> beautiful up there. >> great time to head to the sierra, how about the roads?
