[ drumming and music and noise in the background ] >> reporter: not only the mess but tension. the fight broke out in front of me about a half-hour ago. let's go to that video. the man in the suit actually was wearing a "make america great again" hat. that's the trump hat. and a person stopped right in the middle of the intersection, got out of his vehicle and started beating him up basically, ripping off the hat and it turned into a big fight. the man who assaulted that man did end up getting arrested. but this is just one sort of little pop-up drama that's been going on here around uc- berkeley and the downtown area. you can see the damage, boarded up window at the student union behind me and there's a lot of talk right now about free speech rights. protestors setting off fireworks in the middle of uc- berkeley's sproul plaza, to stop milo yiannopoulos from speaking on campus got out of control. people wearing masks started rioting. a portable light caught fire shooting flames into the air. demonstrators grabbed barriers and smashed in the windows at the student union. this was the view from inside the building for yiannopoulos supporter cindy kinkade sheehan pictured here with him earlier that night. in her video you can see police in riot gear on the second floor balcony. [ inaudible ] >> reporter: once the event was canceled because of the drama outside she and her friends had to exit the building. [ loud had whistles ] [ inaudible ] >> in the sense that we were definitely targets. >> reporter: the vandalism continued spilling into downtown berkeley. rioters hit several banks and atms. we caught one arrest on camera but in general, police refrained from cracking down. >> could have incited more violent reaction from this small group of people. we have seen that happen in other communities where, um, where they respond with violence not only to the police but to nonviolent protestors in the crowd. >> reporter: that's berkeley's mayor who says one of his staffers was knocked down as she was taking a picture her phone stolen. >> unfortunately i think this incident has given the conservative right the, um, the image they wanted. >> reporter: president trump tweeted last night if uc- berkeley doesn't allow free speech and practices violence on innocent people with a different point of view, no federal funding? in response, barbara lee said president trump's empty threat to cut funding from uc-berkeley is an abuse of power. i will continue to stand up to president trump's overreach and defend the rights of our students and faculty. >> reporter: berkeley's mayor says he is going to discuss the police response with the officials here at uc-berkeley. he also wants to talk more with them before they invite another controversial speaker on campus. live at uc-berkeley, anne makovec, kpix 5. now as to storm watch. a wet windy day around parts of the bay area. a live look at san francisco's ocean beach. definitely cloudy there. not the ideal conditions to get a suntan. over the east bay in berkeley people ready with their umbrellas as steady rain fell earlier today. and it was a messy commute on the bay bridge this morning. strong winds slick roads making for a challenging drive over the bridge. roberta joins us now with conditions. >> most of the heaviest rain moved in while everybody was still sleeping. good afternoon, everybody. at this particular time, our live hi-def doppler only picking up some light precipitation around the santa cruz mountains backing in throughout the south bay between san lorenzo park and saratoga as well as raindrops on the rooftops in los gatos. here's some of the totals over the past 24 hours. socal in the santa cruz mountains approaching 2 inches of rain. santa rosa airport was about an inch and a quarter. san francisco a tenth inch. the wint is the other side of the story up to 32 miles per hour winds at sfo now. windsat 23 in fairfield. we'll talk about the next front and when it's going to blast through the bay area together coming up later on in this newscast. new at noon, this year's second snow survey just wrapped up at tahoe with some great news. surveyors say the snowpack is way above average. some areas are already above the april accumulation levels, the normal maximum time. they measured water content at 153% of average. compared to last month's snow survey where they measured it at only 53%, surveyors say just within the month of january, our snow levels have more than tripled. a bay area woman is dead after being hit by a car allegedly driven by her boyfriend. officers were called to the 400 block of ruth court in san leandro. they say that they received reports of a man and woman arguing and that the woman had been run over. when police arrived at the scene, they found a woman trapped under the car but couldn't revive her. the woman's boyfriend and witnesses are currently being questioned. the backlash against uber is revving up today across the nation including here in the bay area where the company is based. kpix 5's maria medina is in palo alto with the demands for the ceo to cut ties with the president. >> we're urging ceo travis kalanick of uber to step down from the president's coe advisory board. >> reporter: that's the message from protestors today to uber's ceo as they gear up for a day of rallies outside uber offices in the bay area, new york, seattle and several other cities nationwide. >> i see a lot of people on social media that are saying they are no longer going to be driving on uber. >> reporter: protests against uber began last weekend when the company lowered surge prices and told customers they were still working instead of joining taxi drivers who refused to pick up passengers at new york's jfk airport where two iraqi men were detained after president trump's travel restrictions went into place. hashtag delete uber began to trent on social media. [ screaming ] >> reporter: today's protest dubbed hashtag uber drives with hate comes on the first meeting with the economic council that kalanick is on. he said he would pay uber drivers who couldn't get back into the u.s. because of the restrictions and raise those concerns with the president tomorrow. >> we are here to say that you should not be profiting off of the, um, moral and unjust actions that have happened against our immigrant and refugee communities especially here in silicon valley. >> reporter: the first bay area protest happens here at the palo alto uber office at 1:00 where security told us the media is not allowed. other protests in oakland and san francisco happened throughout the day. in palo alto, maria medina, kpix 5. a uc-berkeley engineering professor testified this morning before a committee looking into a troubled high- rise in san francisco. he was to shed light on the design and approval process for millennium tower. the 10-year-old building has been plagued with problems and has been sinking and leaning. he served as a consultant and adviser on the project. new at noon, the us treasury department has eased sanctions on the russian intelligence agency. the obama administration had put them in place in retaliation for election- related alleged hacking. the group has control over imports to russia of devices with encryption technology. today's change allows u.s. companies to conduct certain transactions with the agency but the white house stays doesn't mean the u.s. is easing sanctions on russia overall. east bay congressman eric swalwell issued this statement regarding today's move writing, quote, easing these sanctions allows russia to sharpen its knives and import tools from the united states to hack us again. congress must act swiftly to reimpose these sanctions so those who attack america know there's a price to pay. swalwell is a member of the house committee on intelligence president trump is focusing on immigration making comments on twitter and at the national prayer breakfast. weijia jang has the latest from the white house. >> reporter: president donald trump gave a speech at the national prayer breakfast to say changes are needed in america's immigration policies to protect american values. >> there are those who would seek to enter our country for the purpose of spreading violence or oppressing other people based upon their faith or their lifestyle. >> reporter: one policy the president says he will now review is an obama era deal to allow more than 1,000 muslim refugees to leave australia and come to the u.s. on twitter last night, the president called it a dumb deal. president trump and australia's prime minister talked about that deal during a phone call over the weekend. there are now reports that the conversation did not go very well. >> when you hear about the tough phone calls i'm having, don't worry about it. [ laughter ] >> just don't worry about it. they're tough. we have to be tough. it's time we're going to be a little tough, folks. we're taken advantage of by every nation in the world virtually. it's not going to happen anymore. >> reporter: prime minister malcolm turnbull says the deal is still on. >> the president assured me that he would, um, continue with, um, honor the agreement we entered into with the obama administration with respect to refugee resettlement. >> reporter: president trump also called attention to iran tweeting that the u.s. has put iran on notice for firing a ballistic missile. weijia jang, cbs news, the white house. ♪[ music ] still ahead american airlines gearing up for more business in cuba. the company's latest move. >> plus a new spin on the selfie. how drones are now helping people get the perfect shot from any angle. the number of people filing for ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, week by 14- thousand... to 245- thousand. it's a sign the job market remains stro the number of people filing for unemployment benefits fell last week by 14,000 to 245,000. it's a sign that the job market remains strong and we'll learn more tomorrow when the government releases its january jobs report. the first major economic report since president donald trump took office. american airlines has opened an office in havana cuba. two months ago america flew the first commercial flight from the u.s. to havana in more than 50 years. eventually the airline plans to offer 13 daily flights between the u.s. and cuba. american airlines will move forward with the plans even though president trump has signaled he may terminate the deat&t between the our relation with cuba. chris martinez shows us some drones can be controlled with your smartphone offering new ways to capture the perfect picture. >> reporter: professional photographers are looking for the perfect shot even when taking pictures for fun. >> you know, it puts us in the selfie mode. >> reporter: he uses this small drone to take his selfies to literally a new level. >> you get to see the whole scene. >> reporter: a number of so- called pocket drones are already on the market with tech companies promising even more models this year. among them, the hover camera: eric uses his smartphone to fly the unique breeze which can be set to fly automatically around a specific area while taking pictures or videos. >> having something like this and the ease of access and use is just really groundbreaking. >> reporter: some of these drones can even track your every step allowing them to take photos or videos as you move around. >> they will use the gps signal from your phone to track your movements. >> reporter: cnet's senior editor josh goldman says pocket drones that weigh less than a half pound don't have to be registered with the faa like larger drones do. they range in price from $200 up to $1,000. >> lower models aren't going to do the high-end tracking. but the more you spend the better the algorithms you get. >> reporter: he believes the cams will catch on. >> the selfie game is going ton 100 with this thing. ♪[ music ] >> reporter: bringing a fresh focus to the perfect photo op. chris martinez, cbs news, huntington beach, california. ♪[ music ] >> i could get one of those for roberta to do some live shots. >> that would be like a dream come true! it would. have your own little drone! good afternoon. this is our live hi-def doppler radar not much precipitation to be noted only around the santa cruz mountains. as we zero in, picking up light precipitation around highway 17. that's about it at this lunch hour. otherwise, we have some significant rain showers that occurred while you were sleeping about 4 to 5 a.m. all this is lifting up off the ocean northeast. a beautiful view from our kpix 5 studios looking out over the embarcadero and one thing i'm noticing, the lack of a wind. look at the palm trees there. we have mostly cloudy skies. we'll see some more rain showers. we have nearly 2 inches of rain in the santa cruz mountains. otherwise at the airport in santa rosa just nearly an inch and a quarter. san rafael .8." nearly .4" in morgan hill. san francisco barely a tenth. dana is our weather watcher. 54 degrees. she is in novato. and look at how much rain she has seen today alone. nearly three-quarters inch of rain and she said boy it's cold outside. again, looking out towards the bay bridge and treasure island yerba buena island as well, temperatures in the 50s and 60s. it's now 62 degrees in san jose. backing through the rose garden district into right around willow glen. the winds are still breezy in mountain view up to 17 out of the south and southeast out of the bay area. north bay 15. the wind gusts to 32 at sfo where we have delays up to three hours on some arriving flights. more showers and breezy on friday, unsettled through the weekend. here's the front as it slices through the bay area. kind of, boy, wasn't that impressive? we'll have more to come. the front will leave us with more rain friday for the morning commute. as we forge ahead throughout the day on friday lingering showers into your saturday. and by the time it all tapers off, we'll see roughly about an inch more of rain throughout most of the bay area. we have a winter storm warning in effect for the high sierra. we are talking about three feet of snow above 7,000 feet. and here's your forecast for tahoe. would you definitely need the chains all weekend. 50s and 60s. extended forecast sunset is unsettled. >> we'll be watching football anyway. >> if you are really good, we'll get you that drone for christmas. >> i'll be very, very good! >> tonight cbs premieres training days loosely based on the 2000 movie starring denzel washington. i spoke with two actors who say that their characters only slightly resemble those from the movie. >> he is an older more experienced veteran police officer. >> oh, older. you know. he is a veteran police officer. and i am idealistic cop but that's where the comparisons fall off. >> do you lie to your wife? >> no. i tell her the truth. that's kind of the point of being married. >> no, wrong, there's no point in being married. >> you can watch the series premiere of training day tonight at 10:00 right here on kpix 5. michelle is definitely watching. it's followed by our news at 11:00. we'll be right back. ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, cancer... according to the american cancer society. but sharon chin reports... many in the bay every day 43 children are diagnosed with cancer according to the american cancer society. with you sharon chin reports -- but sharon chin reports many are finding fun and healing thanks to this week's jefferson award winner. >> reporter: the 6-year-old sparkles with joy. her mom says artwork keeps maya's mind off leukemia and chemotherapy. >> it shows her possibilities. she doesn't have to be just a cancer kid. she can be anything. >> reporter: purvi shah reaches hundreds of children with cancer and their siblings each year. >> very cool. >> reporter: through her "kids & art" foundation in burlingame. the children aged 5 through 18 tell her it's a bright spot in their lives. >> they see other kids happy and able-bodied with hair growing back and feeling better, that is the biggest hope we get. >> beautiful! >> reporter: purvi organizes workshops in the community like at the pacific art league here in palo alto, plus regular sessions at lucille pack and benioff children's hospital. more than 100 artists and high school students volunteer. >> reporter: purvi came up with the idea for "kids & art" in 2008 after her younger son amaey was diagnosed with cancer. >> it's just so, you know -- so sad and just so stressful. >> reporter: so the former graphic designer began leading art projects in doctor's waiting rooms. one artist says purvi lets the kids be kids. >> she just brings good positive atmosphere. she just loves everyone. >> reporter: 9-year-old amaey died six years ago. but purvi still feels his inspiration for kids & art. >> i think he would say, keep it up. >> i like the shapes and the textures. >> reporter: so for providing art therapy for kids with cancer and their siblings, this week's jefferson award in the bay area goes to purvi shah. sharon chin, kpix 5. >> you can nominate your local hero for a jefferson award at cbssf.com/hero. we'll be right back. ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, have a great afternoon. that's it for kpix 5 news at noon. ,, >> brooke: mmm!
