A tenth victim died overnight from burns suffered when a big rig slammed head on into a bus. Five High School Students, three chaperones and both drivers were killed in that wreck. It happened along interstate 5 in the glenn county town of orland as the bus was driving northbound on the interstate. Kpix 5 reporter cate caugiran joins us live from the scene. Reporter i got to tell you just looking at that tour bus just breaks your heart. We can give you an upclose look now. We did keep our distance before because the dead were not removed. But now you can get an upclose look. You can really see just that mangled mess there. The charred metal from the bus. Now, investigators are trying to comb through collecting evidence here on the scene and theres a lot of work to be done. Also a lot of questions to be answered and the one that stands out, why did the driver of the fedex truck cross on to oncoming traffic . Two large vehicles collided in orland, california, about 100 miles north of sacramento. There was a fedex truck going southbound on i5 just north of the 32 exit. For an unknown reason, it crossed through the Center Divide and collided head on with this bus. Reporter the bus, the fedex truck caught fire. The flames gutted the insides of both. Firefighters helped some of the victims away from the scene. Many of them clearly injured. Most of them students on their way to visit Humboldt State university and attend spring preview day. We have 48 people on board, 44 students and three chaperones and one driver. Reporter the University President issued a statement saying in part, Humboldt State university is deeply saddened by a tragic accident that occurred involving a charter bus filled with prospective students. Our hearts go out to those who have been affected and we are here to support them and their families in any way possible. Just the sight of the wreckage of the burned and twisted metal was a shock to many who live in the area. I went outside and everything was in flames already. Only like three blocks from us from our house. So, yeah, sad. Reporter some dead, others injured, mostly students who were just looking towards the future. Developing news. More optimism that search crews will find a malaysian jet thats been missing for more than a month now but as Wendy Gillette reports, theres still a race against time to find it. Reporter australias Prime Minister offered assurances today that search teams may be close to finding the missing Malaysia Airlines jet. A u. S. Navy black box detector aboard the australian ship ocean shield has picked up four under water signals over the past week in the southern indian ocean consistent with those emitted by the planes back boxes. We have very much narrowed down the search area, and we are very confident that the signals that we are detecting are from the black box on mh370. Reporter Prime Minister tony abbott spoke to reporters while visiting shanghai, china. He also brought up the sobering reminder that time is running out. The batteries which emit the signals only last about 30 days. And the plane disappeared more than a month ago. We are hoping to get as much information as we can before the signal finally expires. Reporter investigators announced that the first signal detected by an aircraft is not related to the missing flight. Abbott stressed that even if teams are able to find the planes cockpit voice and flight data recorders, the recovery effort would be a lengthy process. Its usually closer to 7 or 8 when we see some kind of delay. Yesterday, we could barely see traffic in this camera the fog was so thick. So just a heads up. We have low clouds and fog a little drizzle out toward the coastline but look at the mid to highlevel clouds sweeping in across the state due to an area of low pressure off the coastline thats headed towards southern california. But its going to bring us a lot of clouds on and off throughout the day today. The low clouds and the mid to high levels combining to bring the temperatures down becoming partly cloudy by the afternoon. But cooler and then morning clouds and afternoon sunshine for the weekend. Not a bad weekend when the numbers are going to be down a bit. High pressure on this low approaching the coastline. Not a lot of energy with it but clouds sweeping ahead of the system will keep the clouds on and off into the afternoon today. Around the state you will find a few clouds too and a mixture of sun and clouds. Still almost 89 degrees or so into fresno. 82 in sacramento. About 63 degrees and mostly cloudy into monterey bay. Computer models showing you those clouds sweeping up from the south and you have some low clouds and fog down below. In fact, we are probably going to see a strong surge of low clouds and fog as we head into tonight, early tomorrow morning. Maybe all the way into the central valley.
