Away. Hi, everyone. Im frank mallicoat. Michelle griego is off this afternoon. The International Bird rescue is setting birds free today in sausalito. Thats where we find our anne makovec. Anne. Reporter what caused the problem initially is still a mystery. But the threat in the bay appears to be over. Today two dozen birds appeared to have survived it all with flying colors. Okay. We have a male here and just turned around there you go. Reporter and with that, 24 birds were given a new lease on life. These are some of the hundreds of birds found coated in a mystery substance over the last two weeks. This is the first group to have graduated from the International Bird rescues operation to save them. Most are surf scoters. Their feathers are impacted in this way and they have to be cleaned. A lot of their rewaterproofing depends on how actively they work to realign their feathers. Reporter since january 200 birds have been found dead on the shore covered in a goo that was breaking down their feather structure causing hypothermia. Its not toxic or poisonous but theres still a multiagency investigation to figure out what it is. These things progress only so fast with the Laboratory Equipment available to us. Reporter 300 of these birds were captured by rescuers over the last two weeks hoping to nurse them back to health. 100 then died in captivity. There are still almost 200 recovering at rescue facilities today with the hope they will one day again fly free. Its the same feeling every time. This is why we do it. Reporter back here live now, you can see the released birds have company. Thats why they were released here because theres a herring spawn taking place right now. They have the choice to stay or go back to the east bay. Live in sausalito, anne makovec, kpix 5. Thank you, anne.
