Reporter of all places Police Spotted and stopped a stolen car right here in front of the Public Defenders Office and just right around the corner from the Police Department but the suspect didnt give in easily. Witnesses say he apparently put up quite a fight before officers could finally cuff him. This mother is relieved and holding her baby just a bit tighter tonight. The infant seemed fine but her parents had the scare of a lifetime. [ nonenglish language ] of course, i was very scared crying. Reporter police say this man stole the family car with the little girl strapped into her car seat. No one knew where she was for 10 agonizing minutes theres a fourmonthold baby strapped in the back seat in the baby seat. Reporter it happened in the ender loin. The family in the tenderloin. The husband had the baby in the back when he drove to golden gate avenue and leavenworth street to pick up his wife. [ nonenglish language ] the car was running. Someone kicked the car. My husband came out of the door check because he didnt know if he had hit someone. That was when someone got in the car and drove off. Remembers the husband ran after the reporter the husband ran after the car and screamed for the man to stop. 10 minutes later an officer spotted the car and pulled it over. Witnesses say the man tried to stop first from cuffing him. They tied him down. He was resisting quite a bit. Thats when backup was called. So by the time the other policemen had come, he had already been contained and the zip ties. Reporter they arrested the man. The infant was inside and unhurt. They brought mom directly to the scene and baby and mom were reunited, which definitely the happiest part of the story. Reporter but the parents say theyre mentally exhausted from this ordeal. An update on a story we told but at 5 00. Watsonville police now saying a missing 6yearold girl was found safe and unharmed. Itzel was reported missing but it was a mixup with the babysitter. Breaking news from the north bay now. Sonoma county sheriffs report one of their deputies was involved in a shooting. It happened this afternoon in guerneville. No word what led up to the shooting. One man was taken to the hospital. Were making calls to get the latest on the suspects condition. New details on the case of a 9yearold boy killed in discovery bay. An attorney for the family of jordan almgren tells kpix 5 there had been a neighborhood sleepover at the boys house on saturday night with kids from nine to 18 years old. When the last of the kids fell asleep, the family believes 18 yearold William Schultz snuck into jordans room and stabbed him to death while he was sleeping. It was jordans own mother who discovered his body the next morning. Schultzs defense Attorney Says he has mental problems for some time. Family tried desperately to get help for their son, who was exhibiting signs of mental illness. They tried very hard in the weeks and months leading up to this. Schultzs arraignment was rescheduled for next month. Prosecutors say they do not plan to seek the death penalty. 49ers are backing down from a plan to take over some soccer fields next to levis stadium. This all comes after major pushback from the youth soccer teams. 49ers wanted to buy the field for 15 million. The idea was to use the land for parking. But the City Council Members say that the team undervalued the land. Now the 49ers have taken their proposal off the table. Kpix 5s devin fehely on a Public Relations blitz that paid off for the kids. Reporter it shouldnt surprise anyone that the 49ers had their eye on this property. It is 11 acres of prime real estate thats literally in the shadow of the brandnew stadium but the City Council Member who managed to put the brakes on this proposal says she was blindsided a bit by the financial terms. She says that this was shaping up in her opinion to be a back room sweetheart deal that was great for the 49ers and virtually no one else. I was not going to give away the property at a fraction of the value and i was not going to evict the soccer commute from their park without a relocation plan paid for the by the 49ers. Reporter the 49ers tried to frame this as a setback rather that their initial proposal was meant to be to start a conversation and it wasnt meant to be the final word on the matter. Opponents of the warriors downtown arena plans tells our Mike Sugerman traffic and parking problems could really hurt the new hospital next door. Reporter warriors have yet to face any serious opposition in the magical season. Their proposed new arena just got some. The arena will destroy the goose that laid the golden egg in mission bay and thats biosciences and ucsf hospital. The plans and locations for the arena have already been changed a few times. This is where the arena is set to go on the edge of mission bay right off 3rd street, 18,000 seats, upwards of 200 events a year, and, of course, its right down the street from the giants ballpark. 40,000plus fans, 80 times a year. And in between the two, San Franciscos new police headquarters. Southern station and firehouse number 4. Virtually right across the street from that hospital. Traffic and parking are the heart of the problem. Mission bay was not designed for an 18,000seat arena with 200 events annually to be right next to a hospital to be in the midst of Biosciences Research facilities. A Woman Told Police she was walking on the arroyo trail near arroyo road yesterday when a man grabbed her from behind, then he sexually assaulted her. The suspect is still on the loose. Police are adding extra patrols around the trails. In berkeley a groundbreaking for a new biotech facility. Bayer healthcare is spending 100 million on the project. The facility will be used to conduct research on drugs for hemophilia. It is another sign of the times in the bay area housing market. Thousands of people were roaming da nang airfield. Reporter the situation in vietnam was unraveling. World airways tried to evacuate refugees out of da nang. But it was mobbed by hundreds of panicked south vietnamese soldiers armed with guns and grenades. The front was moving south. It was a matter of hours. Reporter the u. S. Banned all commercial flights from flying in and out of vietnam but panam got special permission for one final flight. A Mercy Mission to saigon that involved a jumbojet, a boeing 747. It was an eerie feeling to me to know we were going flying into someplace that people were not wanting to go into but only to leave and get out of. Reporter the goal, to evacuate panams vietnamese employees and their families and to cram anyone else they could on board, including chas four sisters. I tried to get my family out because im vietnamese. Reporter pam had a plan. In the cargo area with extra uniforms, they disguised her sisters as stewardesses. One by one, they drove them out to the plane, past soldiers with machine guns. And put them upstairs in the lounge in the 747. Reporter they collected money and pillowcases and bought visas for the refugees and babies who got on board. The flight then took off with almost 500 passengers. Could you see there was gunfire at the end of the runway, they were out there firing at us. Reporter the mood on the plane . Very sad emotional. Leaving their country. Leaving everything behind. Reporter the women meet almost every year. They are grateful for each other and grateful for the vietnamese passengers they helped to free them. Made for a richer country. Part of the fabric, a wonderful part of the fabric. Reporter well, as for the panam airport workers, the saigon station manager an american adopted more than 300 of them as well as their immediate family members. 300 the adoption papers got them off the plane and out of the country. Amazing. Absolutely. Talk about guts. I mean, these women didnt have to go. No. They volunteered to go. Its unbelievable and that station manager that i just mentioned, he keeps in touch with a lot of the 300 people that he adopted just to get them on that plane. Its amazing. He lives in florida now. She was strapped in the back seat of the family car when a suspect stole the vehicle in San Francisco. Shortly after, police pulled the suspect over and arrested him. Baby recovered unharmed. Bart needs billions of dollars. 9. 6billion to be exact. In a report today, the state auditor says that is the amount of money the agency needs to keep trains on the tracks through 2024. They are using the drought as an excuse to justify rate increases. Reporter the district says it will bring in an extra 6 million needed to cover increased water supplyrelated costs but when eric did the math, he found that most of the money is going to labor, not water costs. Its completely different than what they have been telling the public. Reporter employees of the district have it pretty good. More than 200 people on staff even meter readers and Customer Service reps make six figures if you include benefits which are very generous even by Silicon Valley standards. Topping the list at more than 377,000, general manager robert shaver. Were competing for quality individuals,um, with the likes of google. Reporter how many years have employees received raises . They have received raises since i can remember. Reporter he says the latest rate hike has nothing to do with labor costs. Actual labor costs will be significantly lower than budget. Reporter later he confirmed water purchase costs will be lower this year than last. Whats not expected to change are the perks, especially for board members. Two of them in particular have a habit of attending multiple annual conferences held at expensive resorts at disneyland and monterey. What happens at these conferences . So basically, employees, um, participate, um, in the, um, American Water Works Association conference. So employees learn about new advances in Water Treatment technology.
