northern california are suddenly told to find safer grounds with a potential catastrophe developing at the tallest dam. kpix's reporter is there. >> reporter: this is the 50-foot wall of water crashing into several communities here. north of sacramento. but the area around it is compromised and the concern here is not the actual dam. it is the overthrowing spillway to the northwest of the dam. first, the main concrete spillway that is used to release water when it gets too full was damaged on wednesday and it is released onto the emergency spillway. that startedeer roading the earth downstream. then concerns that that area immediately below the emergency spillway could give way and eventually hope a huge hole in lake oroville. it is stressful and complex and rapidly changing and so we are doing everything we can in the effort to support butte county and the local authorities. >> that is a onele 8,000 people have been evacuated and many of them in butte and yiewb bay area counties. near channels and levees. and the hotel it is around the areas are full for about an hour and a half away and we did see a steady stream of cars coming down as we were approaching the area this spillway. there is after erosion under a stillway occurred that hadn't been used and authorities are concerned that erosion could lead to the failure of the oroville's dam's spillway. and we are being threatened under the spillway by the erosion we have seen and since the main spillway was damaged last wednesday. if the emergency spillway fails, it could allow large uncontrolled releases of water from lake oroville and we are talking about the possibility of a 30-foot wall of water. it could overwhelm the capacity of downstream channel it is and the levees and the good news is the makovec and there is a rudimentary repair job going on around oroville dam and they are putting up boulders in the white bags and then hopefully reinforce the infrastructure around that dam before it has the chance to collapse. the concern is not the actual dam. it is the overthrowing spillway to the northwest. first, the main concrete spillway that will release water and damaged on wednesday and water was released on the emergency spillway and that started eroding the earth downstream. then the area immediately below that spillway and could give way and open a huge hole in lake oroville. 188,000 people are under mandatory evacuation. >> public safety is my in hum one concern and ensuring safety. for a thousand people. it is critical. i am not going to lift the evacuation order until i
