tsunamis. it caught people in the area off guard. >> i look and the water was already coming, this man said. >> the quake lasted for three minutes causing buildings to sway in the capital of santiago. wet weather providing relief for the "valley fire." the fire is 35% contained thanks to help from overnight rain. it's been a long night for evacuees sleeping in tents and that rain. the hunt continues for those missing in the flames. the fire the fire killed an elderly woman -- the fire killed an elderly woman and four others are unaccounted for. cadaver dogs are searching for victims in middletown and cobb. anne makovec joins us from the evacuation center in calistoga. >> reporter: the roosters starting to crow here at this camp where people have been staying since saturday. they are exhausted. people are about to cook breakfast as some of the evacuees hope to go home. it was a wet rainy night. this is at the napa county fairgrounds where people did their best to waterproof their tents. it brought hope that rain would help the firefighters get "valley fire" under control and it did. >> the rain has helped us immensely. the rain has slowed the progression of the fire. >> it gives me a --improves the ability to get out there and make some good headway. >> reporter: fire crews kept working on the containment lines last night mopping up hot spots. the fire has burned more than 70,000 acres and hundreds of homes. the real concern now, downed power lines in the neighborhoods that have been burned. more sheriff's office escorts back into the neighborhoods start at 8:30 this morning. anne makevoc, kpix 5. one man has been missing since the "valley fire" broke out on saturday. 69-year-old leonard neft a retired reportedder with the "mercury news" spoke with his wife last on saturday night. she begged him to evacuate the lake county home. >> the last phone call, i told him please, hon, you need to leave. you need to leave. he said, i don't think i can get out now but i'm going to try. and i can hear he was scared. he was getting scared. >> he made a run for it and that's the last anybody heard from him. their home burned down saturday night. and the 69-year-old's burned- out car was found later about a half mile down the road. this morning the "butte fire" has killed another person. a man's body was found in calaveras county. he is the second person to die in that fire. pg&e says one of its power lines may have hit a tree starting the fire but it's waiting to hear from investigators. "butte fire" now 47% contained. it's charred more than 71,000 acres. and president obama and governor brown discussed california wildfires in a phone call yesterday. the president said yesterday he is praying for the state and emphasized his administration will keep supporting state and local firefighting efforts. they got a break last night with the rain. but hotter temperatures are coming. >> a big break with .4" of rain in the area. a lot of moisture in the atmosphere this morning, as well. but as michelle was alluding to, we are entering into an extremely dry hot weather pattern. today as you are stepping on out the door, the "valley fire" forecast suggests a dry weather pattern today, lower relative humidity, seasonal highs in the 70s, perhaps even low 80s. lighter winds 5 to 15 miles per hour. there's a deck of clouds layer on top of layer at sfo. in addition to that, we have some pockets of fog. santa rosa and napa both reporting visibility down to about a quarter mile at this hour. it's mild in the 50s and 60s and later today, slightly below average temperatures in the inland areas by 5 to 7 degrees. 80 in livermore. 77 degrees in san jose. 70s commons across the peninsula. very seasonal across the bay today. but triple digits back in the forecast. i have those details coming up at 18 minutes after the hour. liza. we're watching the bridge commute this morning, roberta. good morning, everybody. we are going to talk about the 580 drive approaching the richmond/san rafael bridge. westbound traffic is still flowing well through the commute direction leaving richmond bound for marin county. now, over at the golden gate bridge, still very quiet. our sensors along 101 picking up light traffic between the richmond/san rafael span and the golden gate. but, of course, this hour, you can always counted on delays at the bay bridge toll plaza with the metering lights on. traffic is backed up from the foot of the maze. once on the bridge expect heavy traffic on the incline section and heading for the nimitz 880 still rolling well in both directions through oakland just keep in mind there is a concert scheduled tonight at the oakland arena. so expect some delays closer to around 7:30 this evening. the 101 commute through san jose northbound traffic slow now approaching the 280/680 interchange. that's a look at your "kcbs traffic." now to michelle. liza, thank you. a fired up field of candidates came out swinging in last night's cnn republican presidential debate at the reagan presidential library. we have highlights from simi valley. >> reporter: it was political fight night in simi valley, california. >> he wanted casino gambling in florida. >> i did like. >> yes did you. >> totally false. >> you wanted it and you didn't get it. today, but not as hot as it will be this weekend. i have your forecast coming up. searchers have found the bodies of six hikers who got trapped by floodwaters in utah's zion national park. one hiker is still missing. heavy rain flooded the park. they got a permit to hike in keyhole canyon that morning just hours before a flash flood warning was issued. two of the victims are a ventura county sheriff's sergeant and his wife. attorneys for a vallejo woman plan to file a suit against the police today. her kidnapping was dismissed as a hoax. a man said his girlfriend was abducted from the home. denise huskins turned up safe two days later. here's what police had to say at the time. >> mr. quinn and miss huskins have plundered valuable resources away from our communities and have taken july, matthew muller was charged in the abduction. so far, vallejo officials are not commenting on the impending claim. may here support the idea of a -- mayor lee supports the idea of a memorial plaque in the case of kate steinle. the suspect is an undocumented immigrant deported five times. kate steinle's death reignited the national debate on immigration reform. >> a way to honor her life and positivity for a city that's officially apologizing for that event and try to prevent it from happening to anyone else. i was supportive. >> marty halloran of the st. francis police officers association says a better gesture would be to change the city's policy as a sanctuary city for undocumented immigrants. ridesharing service lyft expanding to china. a chinese ridesharing service is investing $100 million in lyft. the customers from both the u.s. and china will be able to catch a ride using both services. the two companies will collaborate in technology and product development. the drive between the carquinez bridge and the maze in oakland. as we check on the golden gate commute, more folks are out there making this drive. southbound 101 moving well southern marin to san francisco. once in the city, do keep in mind long delays around moscone center as we update the road closures because of the "valley fire," highway 29 remains shut down at tubbs lane. but 128 has been reopened in both directions approaching ida clayton. as we check on the rest of the commute this morning, it has been a slow one for westbound 580. the earlier accident we had involving that motorcycle has been cleared up at grant line but take a look at what our sensors are picking up. very long traffic now long delays between the 205 interchange and the dublin interchange this morning. so that commute is beginning to fill out. be prepared for those backups this morning. 880 still looking good rolling well in both directions through the oakland area expect longer delays than usual for the evening commute. we have a ricky martin concert scheduled for 7:30 tonight at the oracle arena so that will delay some traffic just outside the arena along the nimitz. northbound 101, very heavy now leaving the 280/680 interchange in san jose. but 280 still looking good approaching downtown. no delays for 101 through santa clara so far. and if you plan to catch mass transit no delays for bart, the ferries or the altamont commuter express. that's a look at "kcbs traffic." now to roberta. time check now 17 minutes after the hour of 6:00. out the door this is the view looking towards sfo. we'll monitor it very carefully with the possibility of airport delays because of clouds. we have pockets of dense fog reported in santa rosa at 56 degrees. also in the napa area visibility down to half mile in some areas. it's mild out the door in the 50s and 60s. we have pockets of fog this morning. and then ample sunshine returns. it will be warmer than yesterday but not as warm as this weekend when it heats up. this is a dissipating area of low pressure passing to the south and east leaving behind now high pressure to nestle into the state of california. once the fog lifts, we will have sunny skies and temperatures about 5 degrees below average in our inland areas but pretty seasonal next to the bay and the seashore. inland lies today into the 80s, 77 ukiah. we'll be watching and monitoring the high sierra because this weekend, we will probably see a red flag warning in effect all the way through yosemite for extremely dry conditions. meanwhile that tsunami advisory in effect for san luis obispo to the south, our beaches three to four feet swells at santa cruz, with an air temperature of 77. some of these swells building up to 5 feet out of the southwest. no advisories for any of our local beaches. temperatures today along the coast 67 degrees in pacifica. 60s and 70s across the bay today. 70s on the peninsula, 80 towards windsor, otherwise low 80s to the east of the bay. northwest breeze five to 15 miles per hour. and because of the shift in that wind we'll have some hazy sunshine today. notice by sunday, 102 degrees well inland. brittle dry conditions there. autumn officially arrives next wednesday. we do have the air quality today on the moderate side across the northern portion of the bay area. again, due to that northwest wind. i think frank mallicoat has more information about that coming up shortly. yeah, we do. and, in fact, the "valley fire" is prompting some air quality concerns around the bay area. we are going to have [ crying ] >> reporter: miss flynn signed up yesterday for a sheriff's office escort back home. she is hoping to get one today. >> we have to know if we can breathe easier or if we have to go and pick up the pieces all over again. >> reporter: at the evacuation center in calistoga evacuees are doing their best to waterproof their tents. while it made for a challenging night -- >> the rain has helped us i am americansly slowing the progress -- immensely, slowing the progression of the fire. >> reporter: overnight fire crews mopped up hot spots taking advantage of the cool wet weather. >> it's given the crews the ability to get out there and make some good headway. >> reporter: of course, the rain presents new challenges to firefighters, muddy dirt roads and slick hillsides. >> but the benefits far outweigh the bad things that the rain brings. >> reporter: a big danger right now in the burn zone, downed power lines. they are dangling in the same neighborhoods where more evacuees will return today to see if their homes still stand. >> you can believe all the rumors that you can -- but you have to see it firsthand. >> reporter: now, i was just speaking with one of the evacuees here. she said she spent a couple of nights in a hotel room and she could afford a hotel room but said she decided to come here and she is glad she did. she is happier here because there's a sense of community. they are starting to eat breakfast together now. in calistoga, anne makevoc, kpix 5. the american red cross is still asking for monetary donations to help people displaced by the "valley fire" ." make donations online or by phone. the bay area air quality management district has issued a warning this morning. they say smoke from the "valley fire" will start to make its way to the north bay over the next few days. winds will shift this morning bringing the smoke into napa county especially. the air district says they will continue to monitor the situation throughout the day. let's check in with roberta now. because it's going to get hot by the weekend. >> very hot. triple digits in the bay area and in the areas of the "valley fire" and the air quality will continue to deteriorate. today we have pollution in the atmosphere. moderate air quality in throughout the northern portion of the bay area. just hazy everywhere else. the "valley fire" forecast is a dry weather pattern today all the way until next wednesday. lighter winds 5 to 15 miles per hour is good news but the heat is not. deck of clouds over sfo. 58-minute delays at sfo. mild out the door, santa rosa and napa visibility down to a quarter mile due to pockets of dense fog. fog dissipates, clouds lift, temperature-wise with the sunshine, 60s beaches, 60s, 70s across the central bay, 70s around the peninsula so those are all seasonal. inland highs averaging 5 to 7 degrees below normal around livermore at 80 degrees. coming up in less than 10 minutes, we'll talk more about the triple-digit heat and also i have a little bit of a surf forecast for you. >> the commute is holding steady. delays at the bay bridge toll plaza. and this morning, those backups extend into the macarthur maze with the metering lights on. between the carquinez bridge and the maze that's clocking in at 30-minute drive time. it's going to take folks about 15 minutes to get through the toll plaza this morning. leaving the southern marin area bound for san francisco, still wide open at the golden gate and we just want to go over again some of the highway closures because of the "valley fire." highway 29 remains shut down in both directions at tubbs lane but 128 has been reopened both ways at ida clayton. meantime over at the richmond/san rafael bridge, there are delays at the toll plaza in the westbound direction. once you get on the bridge, traffic does okay across the span bound for san rafael. that's a look at "kcbs traffic." now to frank. a lot of verbal fireworks in southern california and republican presidential candidates gather for the second debate in the 2016 campaign. cbs reporter craig boswell has the highlights from simi valley. [ laughter ] >> that's a good one. >> reporter: the candidates will face off again next month. craig boswell, cbs news, simi valley, california. a texas teenager becomes famous overnight after bee dealing detained for bringing a homemade clock to school. 14-year-old ahmed mohamed was arrested after he showed an english teacher in irving texas high school what he had made, a homemade clock. the teacher reported him. some are accusing the school and police of overreacting because ahmed is muslim. in the end, he won't be charge. -- he won't be charged. >> i am --i really want to go to, um, m.i.t. and, um, i'm thinking about transferring schools from macarthur to any different school. >> yeah. with 680 southbound approaching sunol boulevard. so not too far from the alameda fairgrounds this accident blocking -- just pushed off to the right-hand shoulder. it is causing some delays now. this of course being the commute direction. so southbound 680 is going to be heavy now almost to 580 and stays slow down the sunol grade towards the fremont side and the 580 commute has been very slow this morning. we had a motorcycle accident which was cleared about 40 minutes ago. but westbound 580 traffic is still very slow beyond the 205 interchange. stays heavy through livermore into pleasanton. so expect those backups now for the 580/680 interchange. southbound 680 again those backups begin from the dublin interchange stays heavy down the sunol grade because of that accident we have working now approaching sunol boulevard. those are the hot spots this morning. if you plan to make the bay bridge commute, that's going to be slow for you. it's backed up through the madoff with a 35-minute drive -- macarthur maze with a 35- minute drive time. it's the only bridge with major delays this morning. some backups at the san mateo bridge but still moving, very crowded westbound approaching midspan, no major delays at the 880-92 interchange yet. and heading towards the richmond/san rafael bridge, there are now backups at the spa , pockets of delays. bart no delays. that's "kcbs traffic." now to across the bay area. and i really appreciate everybody checking in at this hour. i want to specific go right here. this would be hopefully pacifica checking in. vicki bennett in san bruno. i wanted to go to san bruno. i was looking at our coastline here today. drizzle at the beaches because of a deep marine layer. there's just no tsunami advisory in effect for the bay area. that would be for the san luis obispo coast to the south which is a good 350 miles. we have nothing to worry about here locally as of now. 3 to 4 feet swells in santa cruz anticipated. right now it's low tide, waters are receding. we have a southwest swell today. at times maybe up to 5 feet. now, these are clouds decks and layers of clouds causing airport delays at sfo up to 58 minutes on some arriving flights. and we also have pockets of fog in santa rosa and napa limiting visibility down to a quarter mile. what we need to know is we have the fog then we'll have the sunshine then we have a huge warmup. seasonal temperatures for us locally today albeit slightly below average in our inland areas. now, meanwhile, 80s in the interior valleys, 72 degrees in monterey, 69 in the high sierra with a possibility of a red flag warning by the weekend. 60s, 70s low eights. we should be at 87 throughout the tri-valley. then 80 degrees. gradual warmup on friday, huge heatup sunday triple digits. autumn arrives on
