[ cheers ] >> reporter: and we are learning about a conversation held by president barack obama and sanders yesterday. cbs news reporting the two talked briefly, and a reporter asked sanders about it today, and sanders said it would be inappropriate to elaborate about it, but within the last hour or a half and so, we learned president obama is going to take a big step in the democratic primary campaign and endorse hillary clinton, a lot of questions if that was the topic of the conversation. bernie sander was asked today, what would happen tomorrow night if he loses to hillary clinton? he says he's only focusing on the here and now, and he will talk about that when the moment comes. i'm joe vazquez, kpix 5. hillary clinton is making one last push in southern california. >> it's not over until it's over, and tomorrow is is a very important day, particularly in california. >> tonight her last event before the voters head to the polls, she's with us greek convert in los angeles. christina aguilera among the big names to perform. cbs just reported clinton has enough delegates and pledge delegates to clinch the campaign. her husband, bill clinton, touring the bay area today in a pickup truck. phil matier has been keeping up with him, and he's with him in san francisco right now. >> reporter: that's right. he's on his way from richmond, and he's probably stuck in bay area traffic like everyone else on the commute, but he's headed to the bayview, and it underscores the last barn storming effort to cinch california, because no matter what the delegate count is, the psychological impact of a win or loss in california is tremendous, and that's why today he was definitely hitting the streets. let's take a look. >> look at this! this is the future of america! [ cheers ] look at you! >> reporter: former president bill clinton campaigning from the back of a pickup truck in downtown oakland in a last- minute effort to get the vote out and pull in the win for hillary clinton tomorrow. >> i hope you will vote for her tomorrow and get more people to do it. >> reporter: the five-stop swing coming as hillary clinton worked los angeles, and both were working to get out the vote in what has become a neck- and-neck race with bernie sanders. >> people look to california. you represent our future. you represent all of our hopes, and the stakes in this election are maybe even bigger than we know. >> reporter: while clinton never mentioned sanders by name, he tried to merge with his more progressive and popular issues. >> college debt is the only loan in america you cannot refinance. that's wrong. if we let everyone refinance, overnight, 25 million americans would save more than $2 million a piece. >> reporter: at the same time taking a jab at sanders as well. >> it's one thing to talk about change, and it's another to deliver it. >> reporter: most of his fire was aim at republican donald trump. >> i know we could run this whole general election on mr. trump's greatest verbal hits. >> reporter: and then in typical clinton style, he dropped the jacket and waded into the crowd. >> it's usual we get out and vote for hillary, simply because she knows how to get in the middle, knows how to negotiate, and she knows how to get things done. >> just get it out there. she's the best candidate overall. >> he was very genuine. >> reporter: are you going to vote for hillary? >> no, i'm voting for sanders. >> i will be voting for bernie to send a message. >> reporter: for starters there's more democrats here in los angeles than anywhere else, but we turn out in bigger numbers and vote more often, and that's why senator feinstein and the lieutenant governor and governor all come out of this area. it's the mother load, and that's why everybody is working it here tonight. in san francisco, phil matier, kpix 5. some trump supporters are accusing the san jose mayor of telling police to back down during the trump rally last week. people spoke out when protesters assaulted mr. trump and his supporters. they didn't assault him. they assaulted his supporters. the mayor says the city charter stopped him from intervening into police matters. >> it was a day before the election, and we recognize an election season, a lot of people come up with interesting rumors, but unfortunately most are false, as is this one. >> reporter: police have not made any additional arrests. they are asking the victims of thursday night's violence to step forward to prosecute those involved. coming up, we will talk with melissa caen to update us. you can check returns any time you want on cbssf.com. a little boy was stabbed inside of a wells fargo bank in san leandro. iyona hammond stabbed 129-year- old in the back as he sat in the lobby waiting for a family member. it was in the wells fargo on east 14th street and studio avenue just before noon today. police say hammond used a pair of scissors to stab the boy and robbed a customer. >> she walked over to the boy who was sitting in the chair, peaceful, waiting for his family member when she stabbed him from behind, completely unprovoked. the boy screamed for help, ran over to the relative. >> that boy was 12 years old, and police captured hammond as she tried to run out of the bank. she is facing an attempted murder charge. the boy is in the hospital and will probably have to have surgery. we now know the man who got into a shootout and standoff with east bay police died of a self-inflicted gun shot wound. the coroner said today that gerald via bria shot himself in the head. last wednesday he shot and critically wounded a fremont officer and minutes later shot a detective who is now in stable condition. he broke into a stranger's home and was holed up there for hours. he was found dead in a closet when the s.w.a.t. team fired gas inside and the house caught on fire. the lawyer for raymond chow wants out of the case. an appeal is expected, but today attorney tony sarah and two others filed papers saying it's impossible to keep representing chow. they did not describe the nature of the risk. the owner of a san jose casino stripped of his license and forced to pay a fine. eric swallow's attorney says the gambling commission has imposed a nearly $14 million penalty because of allegations that swallow and his casino cohorts funneled money from the casino to llcs in an effort to get out of paying taxes. while that was never actually proven, state regulators said swallow lied about certain documents, and his attorney will challenge the decision. californians are using a let water. the average person from california used 77 gallons of water per day, and new at 6:00, a man who saw julia goodrich's story last week about thieves stealing her artificial lawn called to say he wants to help. juliete is back in front of the woman's yard in concord. >> reporter: liz this is is a good story we want to report on. this is the woman's front yard. the artificial was stolen, and it was nailed by by long nails. a gentleman came to her door, unannounced, offering something free, no strings attached. we were with him. >> reporter: it's not every day this happens. >> we feel really bad for you, and we wanted to offer to replace and install your grass for free. >> reporter: we told you about sanders' lawn being stolen. she woke up to a gravel patch. >> reporter: chad vanderveen wanted to do something to help. >> i like to follow the news on artificial grass. it's our business, and i saw your story. that's terrible. >> reporter: we were there when he extended the offer. >> i will give her free grass and install it for free. >> reporter: are you surprised by everyone's good will in your neighborhood? it's being used with the old one for redundancy, and that's the case for another year, so there's time to figure it out, but that, of course, could take a lot more money. i was texting with a couple of the controllers who work up there, and they said their union met with the faa today, and they, themselves are waiting for word on what came out of the meeting. mike sugerman, kpix 5. we are learning more details about the man fatally shot in san leandr o over the weekend. the victim is a muni operator. jackson and another man were shot outside of a bar early saturday morning, and the other victim remains in critical condition, and police have arrested a suspect, however, the investigators are still searching for a motive in the shooting. a prowler warning tonight on the stanford campus after a man broke into the rooms of two female students. kpix 5's kit do explains how the prowler got in. >> reporter: it was easy for the man to get in because the rooms were unblocked. the man walked straight into the woman's unlocked room and pulled the covers off her bed at 3:00 a.m. she screamed and he went running. she spotted him in the building 30 minutes later, and in the 6:00 hour, he did it again, walked into another woman's bedroom and pulled off the covers once more. the victim chased him out into the parking lot towards campus drive and he got away. >> reporter: is this is a safe campus? >> loudly! he has already come out with a statement that says stop counting the superdelegates. they have not voted yet. how effective the argument is going to be, it's not clear. he maintains he can win the hearts and minds of the superdelegates, and that's a tough argument to make. so far in this election cycle, only one superdelegate from the virgin islands changed his vote from bernie sanders to hillary clinton. it does not look that hopeful for bernie sanders right now. he will try to stop gettingtous call her the nominee, basically. >> california voters have not voted yet, but they made a statement with their dollars. >> that's true, the candidate contribution records. the records are not from pacs or independent groups, actually committees, and we got through april. according to the filings, california accounts for 20 percent of the democratic candidate haul overall, and 12% of donald trump's haul, and that makes california number one for all three candidates, and so we are definitely the place to be, and in fact, san francisco, of course, you have to go to the bay area if you're coming to california has already staked out prois preferred with hillary clinton raising about $8 million here and bernie sanders raising about $2.7 million through the month of april. san francisco and california, just big sources of money for the politicians, not surprisingly. >> it's funny. we vote for these folks, and we think we know about their history and what they do. you found a tidbit that is interesting. who is the candidate that uses uber the mote? >> who would you guess? >> i'm guessing bernie sanders. >> the democratic candidates have talked about the economy saying it's unfair to workers and needs to be more regulated, and we checked, and it looks like bernie sanders is actually using uber far more than hillary clinton or donald trump, and i will point out when we were doing the research, we checked on airbnb, and sanders is spending $48,000 on airbnb, and it's less than 2,000 for trump or clinton. he may want to regulate the sharing economy, but his campaign is certainly enjoying it. >> i'm guessing donald trump will not get on the phone and call for that. he has a jet. >> and a hotel. we found $37,000 in hotel lodging for his campaign to stay at his hotels, so, yes, you're right, that makes perfect sense. >> they have a warm bed to sleep in. bernie sanders right now holding a concert at crissy field a live picture, and hillary clinton has her own concert tonight in los angeles, and there's a very different style of lineup. bernie's headliners, the dave matthews band, and clinton has more kind offer name, more pop star type of lineup, christina aguilera, ricky martin, johnny legend. a different feel and different concert. indicative of their campaigns, right? >> that's right, and i'm excited. >> should be a big day for the country as well. melissa caen, thank you very much. outrage spewing over social media because of what some are calling a slap on the wrist sentence for a former stanford swimmer convicted of sexually assaulting a woman after a frat party. brock turner was sentenced to 6 months in the county jail, and he could have had over a decade in state prison. the student's father told the judge his son's life has been altered forever and called it a steep price to pay for 20 minutes of action out of his 20 plus years of life. he since said his words were taken out of context, and devin fehely shares the victim's side of the story in the high- profile case that proves there's no winner. >> reporter: the social media fire storm sparked by the victim's letter and fueled by outrage over what many see as lean januarysy for brock turner, with one blogger promising we will put you in a new kind of jail, splattering your name and face across social media and make sure the world knows you're not a good guy. >> her voice is finally being heard, but the fact there's such a light sentence, it ignited the movement. >> reporter: the victim's letter has been viewed 6 million times, and the fallout has been unsparing. the judge, a stanford grad has been blasted as a biased, and criticized for sending the message of the seriousliness of campus sexually assault. >> we don't agree with the sentence, and i don't think the fact he went to stanford had anything to do with it. >> reporter: he's running unopposed in the election tomorrow, guaranteed another 6 years on the bench, more than 100,000 people have signed an onlinepetition, demanding he be recalled. >> if that were the case a lot of judges would be subject to removal because want public didn't like the sentence he gave out. >> reporter: turner claimed the true lesson of the case was about promiscuity and underedge drinking. the victim for now is choosing to remain anonymous, releasing a statement through the d.a.'s office say all these people are fighting for someone they don't know. that's the beauty of it i don't need labels or categories to prove i'm worthy of respect and prove i should be listened to. >> turner started to serve his sentence at the county jail immediately after the sentencing on thursday. in japan u.s. sailors are barred from drinking on and off base. the crackdown comes after two incidents, and the first involved a former u.s. marine arrested in connection with the rape and murder of a japanese woman, and the other involves a petty officer arrested on suspicion of drunk driving and causing an accident that injured two people. the ban will be lifted when commanders believe all personnel understand the impact of their behavior. coming up, a bay area doctor opening a new clinic. the mission?
