today right over lake berryessa. this is an old time lapse from 1:30 to 2:45. not happening now but look at the strength of the storm which passed over lake berryessa and caused that funnel cloud which turned into a waterspout. one area receiving showers in the bay area light now is fremont south to milpitas. this is working from north to south. it just rained in livermore and dublin heading down and will probably miss san jose to the east. totals today: vacaville nearly half inch. the rest of us less than a quarter inch. rough weather in the central valley continues. we'll talk about what happens next year. if you like sunshine, wait until you see how long it sticks around coming up. a first look at one of the mailbox thieves making life miserable in vallejo. with her car still running, she takes her loot, slams the door and then she drives away. kpix 5's emily turner is outside the vallejo post office with a push to prevent more crimes like these. >> reporter: it's widespread. i talked to one postal man who said on his route out of the 10 cluster boxes he served 6 having compromised. that means there is only four left and it's only a matter of time. the postal service wants to get ahead of the game now. take a look at this security video. postal investigators certainly are. you can see what looks to be a woman pull up in a van to a cluster box. when she walks around to the back, you know it's not hers. investigators say she is a crook and at least one part of the rash of mailbox thefts in the vallejo, american canyon area. >> she should be in jail. yes. >> reporter: that's an easy answer. >> yeah. [ laughter ] >> reporter: a vallejo homeowner posted this video on youtube from april 16 in the middle of the night. it even shows the crook walk away with an armful of mail. we showed it to postal inspectors looking to solve the case. >> these are serious crimes being committed and this is good information for you. it's evidence that we can use to identify and arrest these individuals. >> reporter: so now investigators are trying to get in touch of the owner of the video and asking for the public's help for identifying the person in it. so far there are have been 23 break-ins since february and there are more like this investigators say they didn't know about that need to be reported. >> it is critical. it helps us identify the individuals, their vehicle and again, this is a federal offense. >> if your mailbox has been hit contact the postal service. you don't call the police. you call the postal service to report the crime. they have their own investigators to tackle the crime. emily turner, kpix 5. >> the punishment for mail theft is five years in prison and $250,000 fine. new at 6:00 some of the sillicon valley's brightest are urging the federal government not to put the brakes on self- driving car. this all comes as rules and regulations for them are being hashed out. kpix 5's len ramirez tells us safety is top of mind. >> reporter: with sillicon valley rapidly becoming the detroit of the 21st century, the national highway traffic safety administration came here to stanford to begin establishing the rules of the road fo driverless cars. there was laughter when john simpson handed a steering wheel to google's self driving car director. [ laughter ] the point simpson was making was serious. >> we're talking about technology that can kill people if it goes wrong. that's why it's important that safety provisions be in place. >> reporter: google proposes driverless cars that are completely automated, no steering wheel, no pedals. simpson said not having human drivers be capable of taking over the wheel or brakes if something goes wrong is foolhardy. >> they want to take the driver out of the equation. we are not ready for that. >> reporter: google says completely autonomous vehicles will open up mobility for people who can't drive. >> despite at times there being disparate voices in the room today we're all pulling in the same direction, that is safer roads. >> reporter: the meeting to help shape state and national policies on driverless cars was hosted by stanford which is developing its own autonomous vehicle in a garage on campus. the room was filled with sillicon valley designers and car builders of the future who worry that too much government regulation might slow down innovation. >> all the cameras, the radar, the lidar, feed into the input. >> reporter: they say computers can be better drivers than humans. >> we're able now to achieve super human levels of perception. we can see things and track things much better than any human driver. >> reporter: but some still worry that the subtleties of safe driving will be missing when computers are in control. >> i need to know that they know i'm there. and so without eye contact of the driver my life is on the line. i step out in front of a car, i need to trust it knows i'm there. >> reporter: one of the other announcements today is that volvo is launching the first large-scale deployment of a autonomous vehicles in sweden next year. many other manufacturers and countries are starting do the same. the question is not if driverless vehicles will begin taking over the roads but when. at stanford, len ramirez, kpix 5. >> google's head of autonomous vehicles says that the cars would be available to the public by 2020. well, a deadly crash along san francisco's embarcadero. this was the scene at the intersection of bryant street and the embarcadero. it happened about noon. fire crews used the "jaws of life" to remove the free right side passenger. >> i was waving to the [ indiscernible ] waiting for the light to cross right there and i saw it happen. they came towards me and i jumped out of the way. i was standing right where it is. >> he got out of the way. one person was killed in the crash. two others injured. a stanford student blamed for the sexual assault of another student is suing the university. he claims he was falsely accused and his rights were violated. the case incited campus protests in 2014. the female student says she was assaulted by a fellow student in their alaska hometown during winter break that year. the man identified only as john doe says the sex was consensual and the university rushed to judgment in order to protect its reputation. prosecutors in alaska declined to press charges. the university says its review process was fair and the case handled properly. new at 6:00 out of the classrooms and on the picket lines. faculty at city college of san francisco rallied for a one-day strike. at issue, salary. teachers have been working without a contract for ten months. kpix 5 reporter jackie ward is at the ocean street location with what unfolded today. jackie. >> reporter: well, ken, this is one of the biggest community colleges in the state and it's had issues for years. an accreditation crisis, financial mismanagement and dropping enrollment numbers. and now faculty members want more money. [ chanting ] >> reporter: this was the scene at the location of city college of san francisco. [ chanting about power ] >> reporter: then the hundreds of strikers all converged at civic center plaza. [ more chanting ] >> we're the lowest paid in the bay area and the highest cost of living. >> reporter: he is an english professor. he says he works 45 to 50 hours a week. 15 in the classroom, two office hours and about 30 prepping lessons. some faculty members aren't even breaking 50 grand. more serious ones are making closer to $92,000. >> we do recognize the fact that our full-timers are below the bay area median. we really want to increase that but if we're also giving the part-timers the same boost it makes it very difficult. >> reporter: the chancellor says the union is asking for just over an 18% raise over three years. >> it's a fiscal impossibility. >> reporter: they are offering 7% over two years and full time instructors would see money in the bank account as of july first. critics are skeptical and say that would be one-time bonus money not a salary increase. >> can't pay your rent with money you're not going to get in the future. [ chanting ] >> they are the ones that teaching me and then i'm going to get to transfer and go to uc- davis because of city college!! whoo!!! suspect who shot a bay area pregnant woman in the head. he is armed and dangerous and still on the run tonight. some new details on what may have pushed him over the edge. >> a chilling threat left at the home where a bay area couple was murdered. now the search is heating up for the son who vanished without a trace. >> and circling helicopters sparking some frantic phone calls at the state capital. what this is really all about. ,, ,,,,,, ,,,,,,,, jose. so far -- no arrests ... and no sign of the cou's oldest son. now -- one of t victims' long- time friendss a couple found murdered in san jose, so far no arrests and no sign of the couple's oldest son. now one of the victim's long- time friends has a message for the missing son. kpix 5 reporter devin fehely is in san jose. he has the latest developments. devin. >> reporter: yeah. this couple was found murdered in their evergreen home four days ago. but police have not been able to catch their killer as you mentioned in fact they haven't even been able to catch up with the victim's missing son. officially hasid rabbi is missing but make no mistake whether the police want to say it publicly. he is at the center of a murder mystery believed to have crucial information about his parents death but he is missing. hasid is missing and virtually become a ghost. >> i desperately want closure and i think he can shed light on what happened. that is the reason why i want him if possible for him to come forward. >> reporter: family friend hasan rahim has you remembered the victim's son -- urged the victim's son to cooperate with police. police have not said much about the case. others are speaking out adding details about what was found inside the home including a note written by the bodies saying sorry my first kill was clumsy. investigators removed a section of drywall last night with another message that read, take care of your brother, or he's next. the victim's friends say they are baffled about how this loving couple somehow became the target of so much hatred. >> they are among the gentlest politest people i have known in my life and that's why what happened is such a shock for all of us. >> reporter: yeah. the victim, um, he is officially according to police not a suspect at this time but he is right in the middle smack- dab in the middle of this mystery. the message left behind inside the home appeared to address him directly and hinted at some type of relationship or at least knowledge between him and the killer. in san jose, devin fehely, kpix 5. pregnant woman survived after police say her ex- boyfriend shot her in the head. the shooting happened at the casa pacifica apartments on terra nova boulevard around 8 a.m. the suspect is a 25-year-old transient ricardo colindres. he tried to kidnap the woman outside the complex where she works and when she fought, he shot her in the back of the head. we spoke to a woman who knows the victim and saw her after she was hit. >> well, asked her if she needed a blanket or not, it was cold this morning. but, um, she was sitting up and she is darn lucky. >> police say the woman's unborn baby is expected to be okay. the suspect still on the loose tonight considered armed and dangerous. he is known to frequent the brisbane area. public health officials say pills laced with fentanyl are spreading in the bay area. four people in contra costa county overdosed on counterfeit pills that contained the deadly pain reliever. the other cases were in san francisco, alameda and santa clara counties. none of the overdoses are fatal. health officials are looking into whether it's related to a surge of fentanyl overdoses in sacramento. following some bay area headlines tonight police arrested douglas lai a teacher at gilroy high school on two counts of child enticement. they say that le was receiving illicit images from minors. investigators also believe that he posed as a female person in order to trick minors into sending the messages. in south san francisco police arrested 19-year-old cristian cruz for a deadly park shooting monday. cruz was taken into custody in stockton around 2:45 a.m. this was the scene at orange memorial park after monday's shooting. cruz is charged with shooting and killing a 20-year-old man after an altercation. one person was killed in a fiery crash on interstate 580 in dublin this morning. it happened about 6 a.m. just east of the 680 interchange. chp says a big rig smashed into a bmw and that set off a chain reaction. six cars total were involved. traffic was snarled for several hours. there was some confusion in the sky this morning outside the state capital in sacramento. a fleet of low-flying helicopters circled downtown concerning some residents. turns out they were there for a photo shoot for heli web magazine. the choppers flew over the state capital and the american and sacramento rivers and folsom lake. paul deanno joins us now. we have some wild weather in the central valley today. >> you wouldn't want to be flying those choppers right now over sacramento. that would be dangerous. we had rough weather to the east. this afternoon it was partly sunny. no fire engine on earth could fit on. >> obviously, the fire engines can only go to the parking lot areas and then the paramedics are then having to access the, um, injured party by foot. >> reporter: yesterday a bike manufacturer delivered four new mountain bikes to two fire stations in the district. china camp volunteers say there are miles of trails with no distance markers. so when injured people call for help, they often have a hard time explaining exactly where they are. >> they can say we're on such- and-such a trail but they don't know where on that trail. >> so we'll put the medical ex- on the bikes when they arrive on scene and get them up the trying, putting the medics on the bikes, so they can access the patients faster and that hiking in. >> reporter: it will take a [ applause ] >> cruz and his former rival and tech executive hugged it out during a rally today in indianapolis. but the decision might be too late for cruz's campaign. trump is racking up the delegates. 961 at this time! after yesterday's sweep he is on track to clinch the nomination before the summer's convention. during a policy speech in washington today, trump focused on foreign affairs. >> i'd like to talk today about how to develop a new foreign policy direction for our country, one that replaces randomness with purpose. >> that uncharacteristically formal address is billed as the first in a series of policy speeches before next tuesday's primary in indiana. >> meanwhile on the other side bernie sanders is shrinking his campaign staff after losing four out of five east coast states to hillary clinton last night. sanders announced that he has sent out hundreds of layoffs in an interview with the "new york times." the latest delegate count has hillary clinton with a near insurmountable lead over bernie sanders. kpix 5's political analyst melissa caen is here with us tonight. sanders' staff downplaying the cuts. um, but -- but this is something we saw coming, uhm. you cannot sustain -- it costs money to run a campaign. >> reporter: a lot of money. it looks like the cuts that he is making are in states that have already voted. right? so basically what he is doing is acknowledging, we're not going to be back here probably in a general election so we can cut those staff positions and focus on the states in particular california that have yet to vote. so what that indicates is number one he definitely is going to stay in it at least until june. some of people think he may drop out but he still has staff and money and talking about issues. >> and ted cruz naming carly fiorina as vice president. what do you make of this strategy? is this something that bernie sanders should try? [ laughter ] >> maybe he should announce a vice-presidential candidate. the first thing to know about cruz's announcement today is that it's working already!! that's what we're talking about. we're not talking about how he can't win and his campaign is disintegrating. we are talking about him. that's why. two other points. carly fiorina has been a consistent voice in opposition to donald trump since the debates even after she dropped out. she has been in this war with donald trump. [ chuckling ] and if cruz needs a proxy to go on television and radio stations and make the case against donald trump, she is a good person to pick. the last thing i'll point out is that so she did lose in 2010 to barbara boxer here in california by a lot. but she did get the republican nomination. she got the republican nomination by winning 56% of the vote so remember, she might have a little love left over here in california and he is probably banking on that to help him here in california. >> there is no doubt that donald trump, hillary clinton are waging war -- they need the women's vote. listen to trump for a minute. >> i think the only card she has is the woman' card. she has nothing else going. >> mr. trump accused me of playing the "woman card." if fighting for women's healthcare and paid family leave and equal pay is playing the "woman card," then deal me in [ screaming ] saturday night saturday night saturday night ! >> i think donald trump has challenges with women right now. it's no big secret. is this a good strategy store him? >> the hashtag deal me in has been trending on twitter with people making comments. barbara boxer for example tweeting that, as well. you know, it might be a good strategy or at least a not losing strategy in terms of his nomination. but when it comes to the general election, if this is going to be how he is going to continue to speak about women and try to appeal to women, um, that's going to be, um, a very interesting strategy. [ chuckling ] >> come november, probably won't hurt him between now and june but afterwards when he tries to pivot, clips like that are going to be interesting. >> still waiting for bernie sanders to announce a vp. we'll see. >> maybe you.
