santa rita jail the same jail where deputy khin worked. hundreds gathered for his funeral procession in concord. foley had a 40-year career in law enforcement a. well, it's happened again. two more vehicles set ablaze overnight. investigators now worried that someone is going to get hurt. over this past week, 7 cars total have been torched in communities as far north as martinez as far east as brentwood. kpix 5 reporter da lin is live at the scene of this latest car fire near walnut creek. da. >> reporter: both cars this morning a complete loss. well, look at it. not a whole lot left, just a shell right there. now, investigators say it's a serial arsonist who is setting these fires but a break this morning. a surveillance camera may have captured footage of the arsonist. another fiery start to the morning. firefighters responded to the car fire on juanita drive on the lafayette-walnut creek border just past 2 a.m. the car owner woke up to big flames and thick smoke in front of his house. >> you feel totally violated. >> reporter: david blumberg is thanking neighbors for saving his life. >> do you know who called 911 or how -- >> i heard it was a neighbor. yeah. i -- if it had been left to me it probably would have been ended up in my house because i was asleep. >> reporter: as firefighters were putting out this fire, 911 calls came in for another fire a couple of miles away. the owner of the 2015 suv tells me he used his garden hose and his son grabbed the fire extinguisher to stop the flames from spreading before firefighters arrived. >> these fires are all intentionally set. >> reporter: investigators are collecting surveillance footage from nearby homes. neighbors say this camera may have captured video of the arsonist. an officer also took images from the license plate reader mounted nearby. they worry these car fires will lead to serious injuries. >> the one yesterday did start to spread to one of the houses right under the bedroom of a child so this is extremely dangerous. >> reporter: so far, no motive. and it appears the cars are chosen at random. >> what do you say to this person who is doing this? >> get a life! >> reporter: seven car fires this week. but investigators believe this arsonist may be responsible for more fires that happened earlier this year. they say in total, it could be more than 10 fires linked to this arsonist. live outside walnut creek, i'm da lin, kpix 5. new at 5:00 a science experiment gone wrong! it forced the evacuation of monte vista high school classroom in danville today. we are told a student was presenting a project when the solution being used turned into a purple gas. >> the hazmat team went in, they identified it. they neutralized it and turned it back over to the school. >> they examined about two dozen people but no one was taken to the hospital. students were allowed back into the school after about two hours. president trump today tweeting a warning to his fired fbi director. mr. trump suggested that his conversations with james comey could have been taped. the tweet is adding a new twist in the comey saga. cbs reporter seth lemon joins us now live from the white house. seth. >> reporter: ken, senator mark warner did confirm today he is the vice chair of the senate intelligence committee and confirmed that james comey will not testify before them next tuesday as they had "invited" him. he is also concerned about this tweet from the president this morning about the possibility of white house tapes and he is saying that if they exist, then they need to be reviewed by the senate. today there was much more that the president tweeted that needed clarification but the white house officials here offered little. >> thank you, everybody. [ applause ] >> thank you. >> reporter: president trump isn't saying whether he recorded any conversations with former fbi director james comey. >> what about the idea that in a tweet you said that there might be tape recordings? >> that i can't talk about. i won't talk about that all i want is for comey to be honest. >> reporter: friday morning, the president tweeted, james comey better hope that there are no "tapes" of our conversations before he starts leaking to the press. president trump says comey assured him three times that he was not under investigation including at a january dinner that he says comey requested. >> obviously i don't know what was actually said at the dinner. i wasn't there. but i would find that very inconsistent with what i know of jim comey. >> reporter: the former director of national intelligence, james clapper, told msnbc comey was uneasy with attending the dinner. comey told associates the president pushed the director to pledge his loyalty to the president that night. comey says he refused but promised to be honest. an individual familiar with comey's thinking says the former fbi director is not worried about the possible existence of any tapes from his meeting with president trump. white house staffers and the president have offered conflicting accounts about why comey was fired and the timeline leading up to the decision. the president used twitter to weigh in on that debate saying canceling press briefings and replacing them with written statements instead. senators have asked for a briefing on comey's firing from deputy attorney general rod rosenstein. and he is expected to be on capitol hill next week. ken? >> yes. seth, this is getting curious and curiouser. on the possibility of white house tapes, how -- how did of the senators to review them. >> seth lemon at the white house tonight, thank you, seth. an accused wedding crasher charged in connection with this brawl at a reception in fremont made his first appearance in court today. dozens of people were involved in the fight early sunday morning at the royal palace banquet hall on stevenson boulevard. one person was left in a coma. another has critical injuries. the bride blamed wedding crashers for the brawl. 23-year-old [name] from missouri did not enter a plea at today's hearing in hayward but his lawyer tells us he believes singh was innocent and trying to defend himself. >> my client was beaten badly and he is in danger for his life and personal safety. his actions were 100% within the law. >> singh is free on $100,000 bail. he's expected to enter a plea on the felony battery charges on june 5. a month long investigation into drugstore robberies led police to $500,000 in stolen makeup. and the arrest of two suspects. the products were neatly organized in a storage unit in san leandro. and police believe it all came from five robberies at cvs and walgreens in berkeley, one in san francisco. investigators believe the pair they arrested bought the items from four suspects who robbed those stores earlier this year. a familiar shortcut for people in san jose is now off limits. and neighbors are getting a door-to-door warning. kpix 5's len ramirez on the new danger from bart's new tracks. len. >> reporter: that's right, liz. bart definitely does not want anyone crossing the tracks. this is a significant step though for bart to san jose. it's an exciting one but also one that is dangerous. valley transportation authority workers are knocking on doors spreading the word of a new potential hazard in this neighborhood. the new bart tracks running through northeast san jose are now electrified. >> you can't see it you can't smell it but if you touch it it's too late. >> reporter: she is talking about the electric third rail of bart which runs the length of the tracks on the 10-mile extension into san jose from warm springs. energized with 1,000 volts of electricity. >> put it in perspective, even 42 volts of electricity can be fatal. so if anyone comes in direct contact with those tracks, um, it's electrocution. >> on first street the electrification is above for the light rail and these are actually on the ground. >> reporter: san jose has never had bart tracks before. vta is worried people might confuse them with regular train tracks and attempt to cross them. the tracks are protected by sensing with barbed wire -- with fencing and barbed wire with warning sometimes but people take shortcuts. >> barbed wire with warning signs. >> we are trying to reach all demographics. we are going to the homeless to make sure they let clients know, as well. we are sending out notices through school districts so that particularly high school students know that they shouldn't go through it. >> reporter: vta says the project is ahead of schedule after years of putting up with the dust and traffic jams during track construction, san jose neighbors can't wait for the trains to start rolling later this are electrified, bart trains will soon be running down the tracks doing some test runs that will go on all summer long. this bart extension is expected to open to the public later this year. reporting high-speed chase ended at a movie theater. officers say the suspected ditched his car and ran inside just as a movie was starting. movie-goers say the screen went dark and they were told to get out. officers then swarmed the theater and arrested 27-year- old christopher cook. he was wanted for stealing delivered packages from a doorstep in the arcadia neighborhood. and perhaps just as interesting as a chase a hollywood ending is how it started. >> once we noticed a movement on the tracker system that we are alerted. >> reporter: detectives had been hiding gps trackers inside packages and then leaving them on doorsteps. they got a hit coming from the car officers chased at about 6:30 last night. we had reports from throughout the southland with security video of thieves swiping packages off porches. arcadia's program was created a couple of years ago to tacklele problem. more than 100 suspected thieves have taken the bait. >> this program has been successful for us. >> that was kara finnstrom reporting. police say the package taken contained enough valuables to make it a felony theft and the car the man was driving was stolen. we are monitoring a massive international cyber attack affecting 74 countries. u.s., though, not involved. hospitals in britain appear to be the hardest hit. investigators say the hackers used ransomware to block doctors from accessing patient information. entire wards even emergency rooms were forced to close. turns out, many of the hack attack victims were using an outdated version of windows. >> using windows xp software which is a software system that hasn't been supported by microsoft for last two or three years, which means that they are no longer the -- manufacturers are no longer looking for security vulnerabilities. >> the hackers are asking for bitcoin payments. fedex was also hit by the malware as was the russian interior ministry. it's believed the hacking is being done by a criminal organization and is not a state sponsored attack. new at 5:00, wells fargo now accused of opening more fake accounts than what the bank first reported. last year, wells fargo said its workers opened about 2 million accounts without customer authorizations. but yesterday, in court, lawyers suing wells fargo said the real number is more like 3.5 million fake accounts. wells fargo hasn't commented yet on the allegation. lawyers are asking for a $142 million settlement against the bank. we are in college graduation season. cal state east bay, uc-berkeley and mills college all have commencement ceremonies this weekend. devin fehely says it's a good time to be a new college grad. >> it's an exciting time i think going from college to starting a new job. it's scary but it's exciting. >> reporter: there's good news for the class of 2017. a recent survey found that starting salaries are higher than they have ever been before. >> we're definitely in the hot market end. so we have seen that recruiters are coming on campus much earlier in the recruiting season. in fact, we just met with a few companies this week talking about starting their recruiting in august, which is when students are just showing up. >> reporter: according to a recent survey of nearly 150,000 college seniors, graduates can expect to earn on average almost $50,000 at their first job. and that only goes up for in demand fields like software design where graduates make more than $65,000 or engineering where they get $63,000. but many students will be saddled with significant debt, as well. according to the institute for college access and success, students nationwide left school more than $30,000 in debt. californians fared slightly better at $22,000 in student loans. but that's why a good paying job straight out of school is so important to students like this person. >> going out of college some people get just, like, restaurant jobs or something quickly. and then they can get stuck in that as well so i'm really trying to debit card fraud alerts are up 15% from two years ago. the scammers are targeting people with high income and high level education. most fraud alerts are delivered by phone. 14% come via text and 12% by email. an alert for ram pickup owners. fiat chrysler is recalling 1.3 million ram pickups due to a software issue that has been linked to at least one death and two injuries. the issue could disable the truck's side airbags from deploying and seatbelts from tightening in rollover crashes. the recall affects 2013 to 2016 ram 1500 and 2500 pickups as well as 2014 to 2016 ram 3500s. a milestone moment outside the international space station today. astronauts peggy whitson, jack fisher, spent four hours replacing some equipment. it marks the 200th time that astronauts have made a took the bait. >> i was kind of, like, is this, like, a tv show or something? but i guess it was real. the helicopter showed up. >> reporter: that man was at this southgate shopping center when a high-speed chase ended at a movie theater. officers say the suspected ditched his car and ran inside just as a movie was starting. movie-goers say the screen went dark and they were told to get out. officers then swarmed the theater and arrested 27-year- old christopher cook. he was wanted for stealing delivered packages from a doorstep in the arcadia neighborhood. and perhaps just as interesting as a chase a hollywood ending is how it started. >> once we noticed a movement on the tracker system that we are alerted. >> reporter: detectives had been hiding gps trackers inside packages and then leaving them on doorsteps. they got a hit coming from the car officers chased at about 6:30 last night. we had reports from throughout the southland with security video of thieves swiping packages off porches. arcadia's program was created a couple of years ago to tacklele problem. more than 100 suspected thieves have taken the bait. >> this program has been successful for us. >> that was kara finnstrom reporting. police say the package taken contained enough valuables to make it a felony theft and the car the man was driving was stolen. we are monitoring a massive international cyber attack affecting 74 countries. u.s., though, not involved. hospitals in britain appear to be the hardest hit. investigators say the hackers used ransomware to block doctors from accessing patient information. entire wards even emergency rooms were forced to close. turns out, many of the hack attack victims were using an outdated version of windows. >> using windows xp software which is a software system that hasn't been supported by microsoft for last two or three years, which means that they are no longer the -- manufacturers are no longer looking for security vulnerabilities. >> the hackers are asking for bitcoin payments. fedex was also hit by the malware as was the russian interior ministry. it's believed the hacking is being done by a criminal organization and is not a state sponsored attack. new at 5:00, wells fargo now accused of opening more fake accounts than what the bank first reported. last year, wells fargo said its workers opened about 2 million accounts without customer authorizations. but yesterday, in court, lawyers suing wells fargo said the real number is more like 3.5 million fake accounts. wells fargo hasn't commented yet on the allegation. lawyers are asking for a $142 million settlement against the bank. we are in college graduation season. cal state east bay, uc-berkeley and mills college all have commencement ceremonies this weekend. devin fehely says it's a good time to be a new college grad. >> it's an exciting time i think going from college to starting a new job. it's scary but it's exciting. >> reporter: there's good news for the class of 2017. a recent survey found that starting salaries are higher than they have ever been before. >> we're definitely in the hot market end. so we have seen that recruiters are coming on campus much earlier in the recruiting season. in fact, we just met with a few companies this week talking about starting their recruiting in august, which is when students are just showing up. >> reporter: according to a recent survey of nearly 150,000 college seniors, graduates can expect to earn on average almost $50,000 at their first job. and that only goes up for in demand fields like software design where graduates make more than $65,000 or engineering where they get $63,000. but many students will be saddled with significant debt, as well. according to the institute for college access and success, students nationwide left school more than $30,000 in debt. californians fared slightly better at $22,000 in student loans. but that's why a good paying job straight out of school is so important to students like this person. >> going out of college some people get just, like, restaurant jobs or something quickly. and then they can get stuck in that as well so i'm really trying to debit card fraud alerts are up 15% from two years ago. the scammers are targeting people with high income and high level education. most fraud alerts are delivered by phone. 14% come via text and 12% by email. an alert for ram pickup owners. fiat chrysler is recalling 1.3 million ram pickups due to a software issue that has been linked to at least one death and two injuries. the issue could disable the truck's side airbags from deploying and seatbelts from tightening in rollover crashes. the recall affects 2013 to 2016 ram 1500 and 2500 pickups as well as 2014 to 2016 ram 3500s. a milestone moment outside the international space station today. astronauts peggy whitson, jack fisher, spent four hours replacing some equipment. it marks the 200th time that astronauts have made a
