Instead, he spoke at noon and then left by a side door and bypassed hundreds of constituents who came out to protest what they claim is a cozy and protective relationship with the Trump Administration and also his refusal to hold town Hall Meetings with them. [ music ] reporter its not something you normally hear in fresno. [ music ] reporter the Russian National anthem. Protestors way of greeting congressman devin nunes. [ yelling ] reporter he spoke at the annual meeting of the Agricultural Lenders society of california. We decided to do something so we went down the beginning of february and we went and stood in front of devin nunes office. Reporter dave derby lives in his district and hasnt been involved in politics since the 60s. He says he and his wife have been to nunes office every tuesday since february asking to speak with the congressman. And every tuesday 11 45 to 12 45, we have about 20 to 30 people off and on come down. Reporter but nunes has won elections with big margins. More than 60 of the vote in the last three elections. In an interview today with his local cbs station, he suggested that these protestors are just a vocal minority. The actual traffic to our office is from constituents in the valley is pretty low. And, in fact, there is a lot of support a lot of friends calling me and supporting me. [ screaming ] reporter but here in the central valley, there is a growing movement to unseat the congressman. If you asked me two months ago do you think we can unseat devin nunes i would say not really sure. We would like to. Every day thats gone past in the last two weeks we think we can. We need a candidate that can run against him. Reporter carol kim also lives in the district. This is my first entree into the political world. Reporter she says that a Political Action committee that she started to help any candidate who runs against nunes has already raised 13,000. She has a message for people in other parts of california and the country who want nunes out of congress. There are plenty of us that are willing to put blood, sweat and tears into this campaign to unseat devin nunes. Reporter anyone who runs against the congressman has a tough road ahead of him. He is born and raised in his district and has close ties with the Agricultural Industry and thats a very powerful force here in the central valley. Live in fresno, melissa caen, kpix 5. Back on capitol hill, the white house is speaking out about a new bombshell in the russia probe. Cbs news weijia jang says the president is backing Michael Flynns offer to testify in exchange for immunity. Reporter liz, back in september, Michael Flynn spoke publicly about immunity when several of Hillary Clintons associates got it during the investigation into her private email server. At the time, flynn said when you are given immunity, that probably means you committed a crime. Now he is the one asking for it. Any comment on Michael Flynn, mr. President . Reporter President Trump is not answering questions about his former National Security adviser. But tweeted that Michael Flynn should ask for immunity in this witch hunt. He wants Michael Flynn to be open and transparent with the committee and whatever it takes to do that he supports. Reporter flynn is looking for Legal Protection before answering questions from the fbi and congressional committees investigating russian interference in the 2016 election and any ties between the president s associates and moscow. The ranking democrat on the House Intelligence Committee adam schiff called the request for community a grave and momentous step and saying the matter would discussed with counterparts in the senate and the department of justice. Congressman schiff went to the Eisenhower Executive Office building friday afternoon to review classified documents. The republican chairman of the House Committee wouldnt comment last night and himself is facing questions about possible coordination with the white house. Devin nunes admits making a trip to the grounds last week to look at classified evidence. The New York Times identified his sources as a staffer and lawyer. If that was designed to hide the or general of the materials that raises questions. Reporter schiff is urging the administration to make the documents available to the full committee. After his visit to the white house schiff said, the classified documents he saw he believes were the exact same ones that congressman nunes saw last week and he wants to know why the white house didnt show everyone on the committees investigating russia. Reporting on capitol hill, weijia jang, kpix 5. A rally for unity this afternoon at Albany High School this after two racially charged incidents outraged students and parents. Kpix 5 reporter jackie ward is there now. What are the students saying about all this today . Reporter ken, this was a rally for students by students. It was hosted by the black Student Union and the students we spoke to said they want to take all the hateful events that have happened and turn them into a learning opportunity. [ chanting ] [ singing ] reporter students from Albany High School are making it clear they wont tolerate the hateful racist actions of some of their peers. First, students engaged in nazi salutes. Then most recently a student run Instagram Account was having images targeting black students. They were offensive. Some of my closest friends and people i really know and never slighted me in any way and really truly made attacking people for no reason. Reporter one student we spoke to is a senior and says some of her friends are scared to come to school because they dont feel safe anymore and she is frustrated with what she claims is a lack of communication from the administration. We just found out about the antisemitic events that happened earlier in the school year. Nobody told us. And i think that we missed an opportunity to educate people about this. Reporter but she is hoping yesterdays sitin combined with the unity rally today will be productive steps of healing. We like to think we are in a liberal bubble and protected from all of this hateful way of thinking on, you know, all this [ indiscernible ] but in reality, like, were not. Reporter the superintendent wouldnt comment on the situation today but we spoke to her sunday and the district is investigating what happened. We want to send a message that we dont accept this. Reporter there will be a Board Meeting on april 18 where the district will discuss policies to make this school safer and more welcoming. In albany, jackie ward, kpix 5. A horrific crash killed a bay area father who was driving with his young daughter. Chopper 5 over the scene this morning shows the Pontiac Firebird wedged under the trailer of a truck. Witnesses say that truck had been cleared by a flagman to back into a construction site near diridon station. The driver died at the scene. Witnesses found the mans 10 yearold daughter in the back seat. She was mostly unscathed but screaming in terror. There were some witnesses that were there so again, um, investigators are taking down their statements. And again, we are speaking to the driver of the semi and then of course at some point im sure they are going to speak to the 10yearold. This happened about 7 30 in the morning. A Business Owner in the area says the sun can blind drivers at that hour. A search for a jewel thief tops other bay area headlines tonight. San Francisco Police trying to identify this guy suspected of smashing windows at a chinatown Jewelry Store on waverly street anden that snatching 100,000 worth of items. A cloud of gray smoke in west santa rosa this morning as firefighters put out a barn fire. It started at 10 a. M. On occidental road. No people or animals were injured. The fire caused 100,000 in damages. Its unclear how it started. Developing story now. A home near lake tahoe completely destroyed after a gas explosion this afternoon. You can see it burning in the background there. The ambulance made its way through the kirkwood area. We are told no one was inside at the time. That home, though, is a total loss. In less than 24 hour, the lake is going to be overrun by boaters and fishermen looking to enjoy the water after years of drought and one exceptionally wet winter. After years of drought, Anderson Reservoir is once again a boaters and fishermans paradise. It looks a lot different than the last couple of summers thats for sure and the last couple of winterses. So the water level is actually completely as high as it can get this winter. Reporter even though its a lot lower today than when water was gushing uncontrollably over the spillway last month, the lake than its been in years. Beautiful to see it full again. Its been so long. Its been so low. I used to fish all along this edge all the way out to the bridge and years it just kept dropping and dropping and dropping. Reporter boating season in Santa Clara County opens tomorrow. Park ranger mike tobin will be patrolling the lake reminding boaters that life jackets, flotation devices and fire extinguishers are all required by state law. We encourage everyone to wear their life jacket at all times. Thats what we do when were on the boat. Reporter lakes and reservoirs across Northern California are swollen from all the wet weather we had this winter. At anderson that will eventually mean good fishing. Right now its a muddy mess from the rain. The wind stopped blowing so hard all that should settle to the bottom and it would be i think it would go back to being like it used to be a great fishing spot again. Witnesses arent going to come to testify against bad guys in violent communities because they are afraid that they are going to get arrested in court. In San Francisco, District Attorney George Gascon is joining the criticism of the feds. He says the tactic of coming to a courthouse is in his words born of xenophobia. The attorney general says they are forced to use the tactic because sanctuary cities like San Francisco dont cooperate with i. C. E. In sacramento today, hundreds of california teachers marched for Immigration Rights and against federal tactics. The march kicked off an annual convention coinciding with the holiday honoring cesar chavez. The teachers made a point to stop outside a local office of immigration and customs endorsement. [ inaudible ] helping people, supporting people, keeping families together, recognizing the contributions of immigrants to our state and to our country and not demonizing people. Demonstrators chanted slogans like, education, not deportation. Meanwhile here in the bay area, people gathered at a union hall for a breakfast to celebrate cesar chavez day. Unions for carpenters, firefighters and Service Industry workers helped sponsor the event of the parade and festival happens in San Francisco on april 29. The man who designed the rainbow flag died. For decades, Gilbert Baker was a force in the lgbtq community. He was also an army veteran. Baker designed the rainbow flag back in the 1970s.
