They claim they were living in slum conditions before the fire started. Four people died when the blaze hit the apartment complex on san pablo avenue last month. The attorney for the tenants says, quote, our law firm will aggressively pursue the defendants in this case because of their complete disregard for the health and safety of the tenants. Today marks 20 years since a fire at this East Palo Alto home killed nine people including several children. Kpix 5s Jessica Flores is live in East Palo Alto on how locals are remembering this tragedy. Jessica. Reporter well, kenny, this is not only one of the deadliest residential fires here in East Palo Alto and the county. Its also one of the single largest murder cases here in the county. 11 people were pulled from that home. 9 people died. 5 were children. Firefighters did ultimately save the lives of two individuals a child and an adult. Investigators say the fire was intentionally started by someone who poured gasoline all over the cars parked at the home and they still dont know who was behind it on this 20th anniversary hoping someone comes forward with information. They are also using the anniversary to remind people about fire safety and about the importance of having fire detectors. Menlo park Fire Protection district fire chief today remembers the day saying, quote, this is one of those emergencies you never forget despite how hard you try. What the fire crews did that day, the risk they tooking the incredible effort they gave, the level of emotion we all felt will never be lost on me. And today and, of course, on saturday, this weekend, family will be getting together remembering the lives lost and in june firefighters will get together go back out in the neighborhood and have a Smoke Detector giveaway.
