first impressions are important. you've got to make every second count. banking designed for the way you live your life. so you can welcome your family home for the first time. chase. so you can. live from the cbs bay area studios this is kpix5 news. we have team coverage - beginning with kpix 5's cate caug tonight takedown, the fbi nabs the most wanted guy in the bay area. >> we have team coverage beginning with kpix5's kate cugerrin in san francisco. >> reporter: the fbi had been looking for ryan chamberlain since they allegedly found explosives in his san francisco apartment. a few hours ago they caught up to him here where they took him away in handcuffs. a three-day manhunt ended like this with ryan chamberlain's face pressed to the ground of a crissy field parking lot. multiple officers surrounded him trying to hold him down. chamberlain reached out to the man shooting this video. >> he was asking for help. he saw that i was recording him and he said help me. >> reporter: morgan manos is an uber driver parked here taking a break when he first noticed the commotion and got out his iphone. >> they got him onto the ground trying to cuff him yelling at him to get one of his arms around his back. he was complaining that he couldn't, it was like hurt or stiff or something. >> reporter: san francisco police officers moved chamberlain to the patrol car. manos followed and moved in closer. you see officers pull off chamberlain's beanie. he had a little blood on his face to the struggle. one officer had the gun pointed to the sky. that's when they asked manos to move back. >> can you move over there, please. >> how far? >> get out of the way. >> i was just surprised the whole thing happened right where i was. >> reporter: you did see one police car in the video manos said immediately after several more rushing in including homeland security. manos said it was a scene straight out of a movie. close to the let's go to joe vazquez in russian hill. why were the feds trailing this guy in the first place? >> reporter: we're trying to piece this story together with frankly not enough facts, but we understand this begins with an arrest in sacramento county about a month ago according to a source close to the investigation who tells us in the course of that arrest and investigation some evidence of collected that linked back here to this jackson street apartment where chamberlain lived. the feds around saying what evidence linked chamberlain to sacramento county, but a source tells us the connection had authorities searching chamberlain's apartment this weekend. chamberlain wasn't home. the fbi conducted a nationwide manhunt for him calling him armed and dangerous but said he never actually threatened anyone. chamberlain's trail was cold until around 2:00 this afternoon when the fbi confirms what it called a credible sighting on haight street. fbi agents quickly arrived and began scouring the neighborhood. >> they asked me if i saw the guy walking around. they had pictures on him in their hand. i haven't seen him today, but i have seen him before in the past. he's definitely a regular around the neighborhood. >> reporter: this morning hours before his arrest chamberlain posted online what appeared to be a good-bye note. "so much was broken from this past year and a half i guess it was just insurmountable and the time is up." but chamberlain is alive and well tonight. this is him with his head down in the back of a police car being driven into the federal courthouse. there's still a lot of questions. what exactly was found in his apartment? what about the explosives the feds said he might have in his possession? at first the cops were concerned they might be in his car, so they closed off part of crissy field and called in the bomb squad, but around 9:00 tonight they decided it was safe enough to tow the car away. chamberlain as a political consultant, a lot of the folks in that area are scratching their head, as are neighbors out here in the russian hill area. there was something chamberlain posted today in social media that gave us some kind of hint why the feds might be here. he says that it was something he said online that attracted their attention and he described it as absorbing fuel for morbid fantasies. whatever that means, he'll have some explaining to do in front of the federal judge. >> very cryptic and vague on what he meant, but clearly the fbi thought it was something because it wasn't like this was a police investigation. the fbi really took over and they were spearheading this whole thing. >> reporter: dozens were out here scouring his apartment this weekend. clearly they short time ago. they won't know until 5 a.m. if tomorrow's commute will look like today's. just when you thought you could go to sleep and know how you're getting to work in the morning the possibility of a second day of muni driver sickouts looms. mta spokesperson paul rose says the transit authority is still in the dark tonight. >> we'll let our riders know as soon as we do know. >> reporter: the sickout is the result of a contract dispute. the mta is offering an 11.25% raise over the next two years. workers will be making close to $32 an hour starting july 1st making them the second highest paid transit workers in the country, but drivers would have to contribute a 7.5% pension payment, something the agency currently pays. today 2/3 of the drivers were out sick. you're looking at the result, long waits and if you've got a spot on the bus, it was jammed tighter than market street during a giants parade. >> i'm definitely walking home. >> reporter: good plan because muni's plan b is the same as today where some rules had over an hour between pickups. >> that includes putting two car trains in all of our light rail service, working with b.a.r.t. to accept muni fares and turning all express bus service into local service. >> reporter: we tried to talk to the union reps this afternoon about the situation. they were not available, but we do know muni bus drivers do get 13 sick days a year. sources of mta say if they want to use that day for today, they're going to need a doctor's note. andria borba, kpix5. >> still out there tonight, normally this time of evening you would see cable cars running on market street, not tonight. there has been no service all day because of the sickout. tonight: oakland's mayor we'll have the latest on whether muni is running starting tomorrow morning at 4:30. tonight oakland's mayor caught red handed. that's mayor jean quan using her cell phone while driving. someone sent this photo into the kpix5 newsroom. quan released a statement saying she was simply looking up an address for an event which is legal. she says, "it's nonetheless important to stay careful on the road." a sailor is still missing tonight after his bank sank near golden gate bridge. this was the view from chopper 5. a distress call went out from the 30-foot vessel just after 4 a.m. this morning. coastguard found the boat partially submerged on the rocks east of the bridge before it sank completely. still unclear exactly what went wrong. matt hagaman of truckee is among the six hikers missing and presumed dead on mount rainier tonight. he was leading the expedition. the group went missing wednesday. the national park service thinks they fell more than 3,000 feet from their last known location. no bodies have been found. an intel executive is also one of the six hikers presumed dead, udeh marty. he managed southeast aircraft why for intel and worked for the company over 18 years. right now an american prisoner of war freed after five years in enemy hands is in stable condition at a u.s. hospital in germany. tonight cbs reporter david martin says some people are calling army sergeant bowe bergdahl a hero. others say he's a trader. ther thi is suffering fro >> reporter: sergeant bowe bergdahl is listed in stable condition and for the moment is isolated from the controversy surrounding his release. attoed on his body among other things, he is suffering from five years of a prisoner's diet, but his biggest problem may be the reception waiting for him in the u.s. former members of his unit have taken to the air waves and social media calling him a deserter and alleging other soldiers were actually killed searching for him. josh corder, a former sergeant in bergdahl's unit has the names of those soldier as tood on his body and spoke with cnn -- soldiers tattooed on his body. he spoke with cnn. >> they were never shown on cnn as he is. he pretty much walked away and in turn caused the actions that may have killed them. >> reporter: bergdahl allegedly sneaked away from his out post after his early morning guard duty leaving his weapon and body armor behind. as for why he did it there were conflicting reports. he wanted to walk across afghanistan, make friends in the local community or even fight for the taliban. bergdahl has not been charged with anything and actually received two promotions during his five years in captivity, but a pentagon official described him as at worst a deserter, at best a stupid kid who caused us to expend great energy and resources to bring him home. this official said many in the military think bergdahl should be court-martialed while others argue five years in captivity is punishment enough. hear his side of the story. >> bergdahl could return to the united states as early as the end of this week. at that point we could finally hear his side of the story. meanwhile critics are accusing the president of freeing a taliban dream team to get bergdahl back. all five detainees were active taliban fighters. three held leadership posts in the organization. all five are now in qatar and will be monitored at least one year before they're up the doors and the guy said he doesn't want the [ bleep ] putting anything on his porch. i left. the guy next-door said you [ bleep ] shouldn't be putting anything on my porch. >> reporter: volunteers say harassment didn't stop with the neighbors. >> all of a sudden one police car showed up, then another one and another one, asked me what was i doing. >> reporter: for hours piedmont police circled them. the chief told me this was not racial profiling, that the community and police were simply being vigilant after a rash of burglaries in the area, but hunt said the same thing happened last week in el cerrito when police stopped to question some of his student volunteers. they say police ran their ids, asked if they had criminal records and incorrectly told them they'd need a permit to pass out leaflets. el cerrito police sent us a statement about the incident saying, "our officers contacted the subjects and learned they were going door to door in support of a political cause. a permit is not required for door to door activity in el cerrito." >> just because a black man and black woman is walking down the street doesn't mean they're going to rob you or break into possibility of a second day of muni driver sickouts looms. mta spokesperson paul rose says the transit authority is still in the dark tonight. >> we'll let our riders know as soon as we do know. >> reporter: the sickout is the result of a contract dispute. the mta is offering an 11.25% raise over the next two years. workers will be making close to $32 an hour starting july 1st making them the second highest paid transit workers in the country, but drivers would have to contribute a 7.5% pension payment, something the agency currently pays. today 2/3 of the drivers were out sick. you're looking at the result, long waits and if you've got a spot on the bus, it was jammed tighter than market street during a giants parade. >> i'm definitely walking home. >> reporter: good plan because muni's plan b is the same as today where some rules had over an hour between pickups. >> that includes putting two car trains in all of our light rail service, working with b.a.r.t. to accept muni fares and turning all express bus service into local service. >> reporter: we tried to talk to the union reps this afternoon about the situation. they were not available, but we do know muni bus after his bank sank near golden gate bridge. this was the view from chopper 5. a distress call went out from the 30-foot vessel just after 4 a.m. this morning. coastguard found the boat partially submerged on the rocks east of the bridge before it sank completely. still unclear exactly what went wrong. matt hagaman of truckee is among the six hikers missing and presumed dead on mount rainier tonight. he was leading the expedition. the group went missing wednesday. the national park service thinks they fell more than 3,000 feet from their last known location. no bodies have been found. an say he's a trader. ther thi is suffering fro >> reporter: sergeant bowe bergdahl is listed in stable condition and for the moment is isolated from the controversy surrounding his release. attoed on his body among other things, he is suffering from five years of a prisoner's diet, but his biggest problem may be the reception waiting for him in the u.s. former members of his unit have taken to the air waves and social media calling him a deserter and alleging other soldiers were actually killed searching for him. josh corder, a former sergeant in bergdahl's unit has the names of those soldier as tood on his body and spoke with cnn -- soldiers tattooed on his body. he spoke with cnn. >> they were never shown on cnn as he is. he pretty much walked away and in turn caused the actions that may have killed them. >> reporter: bergdahl allegedly sneaked away from his out post after his early morning guard duty leaving his weapon and body armor behind. as for why he did it there were conflicting reports. he wanted to walk across afghanistan, make friends in the local community or even fight for the taliban. bergdahl has not been charged with anything and actually received two promotions during his five years in captivity, but a pentagon official described him as at worst a deserter, at best a stupid kid who caused us to expend great energy and resources to bring him home. this official said many in the military think bergdahl should be court-martialed while others argue five years in captivity is punishment enough. hear his side of the story. >> bergdahl could return police circled them. the chief told me this was not racial profiling, that the community and police were simply being vigilant after a rash of burglaries in the area, but hunt said the same thing happened last week in el cerrito when police stopped to question some of his student volunteers. they say police ran their ids, asked if they had criminal records and incorrectly told them they'd need a permit to pass out leaflets. el cerrito police sent us a statement about the incident saying, "our officers contacted the subjects and learned they were going door to door in support of a political
