final year in office. democrats are firing back, accusing republicans of playing politics in an election year. >> reporter: early sunday morning the body of supreme court justice antonin scalia arrived in an el paso funeral home. president obama paid tribute to the longest serving member of the court. >> he'll no doubt be remembered as one of the most consequential judges and thinkers to serve on the supreme court. >> reporter: scalia was often seen as the keystone of the conservative five-justice majority on the high court which frequently split with the four more liberal justices. president obama said he'd nominate a replacement, setting up an epic battle with republicans on the direction of the court. >> there's a long tradition that you don't do this in an election year. >> he can nominate someone. the senate is not moving forward until after the election. >> mitch mcconnell vowed to block any obama appointment to the supreme court until a new president is voted in to office. democrats lashed out. >> it's totally out of step with our history and our constitutional principles. >> it's beyond my comprehension and it just speaks to the unbelievable level and unprecedented level of republican obstructionism against obama from day one. >> reporter: funeral arrangements for scalia have not yet been announced. >> justice scalia is believed to have died from natural causes. president obama has ordered the flags at all federal buildings and military bases remain at half staff until justice scalia's burial. justice scalia's death may have an impact on several big cases pending before the supreme court. the justices need to rule on states' rights to restrict abortion. there's also another case on affirmative action. the president's plan to defer deportation for undocumented immigrants and the california teacher's association right to force all teachers to pay dues. >> there are important cases that need to be heard that are not going to be determined if we do not have a ninth member of the supreme court. >> if the vote is 4-4 the opinion of the lower court would stand. we're learning more details in the case of a murdered man in san leandro. he was a church bishop for a congregation in menlo park. he was stabbed to death in his own home, allegedly at the hands of his own son. a neighbor called police friday morning saying they heard him screaming that he didn't want to die. the congregation at his church gathered for service today, two days after the murder. mark kelly spoke with people who will never forget their bishop. >> he was a very nice person. >> reporter: india said she was saddened to hear bishop bostick, a church leader and neighbor she talked with from time to time was stabbed to death multiple times in his own apartment. >> he asked how we're doing and just had a regular conversation. he's very nice guy. >> reporter: police say friday morning a neighbor in the san leandro complex called 911 and reported hearing a struggle coming from this lower level unit, unit 3. as well as a male voice saying your dad is bleeding. i don't want to die. >> everybody is just in shock. >> reporter: when police arrived at the complex they say they found isaiah bostick, the victim's son, inside the apartment with blood on his hands and clothes. police arrested the 21-year-old for allegedly murdering his own father. >> very happy with his kids. i don't understand exactly what happened. >> reporter: police have not put out a motive just yet but this man of the clock will certainly be missed. in san leandro, mark kelly, kpix 5. >> isaiah bostick is being held at santa rita jail in dublin. his arraignment is wednesday. a driver is okay after his truck was hit by an arrow fired from a crossbow. it happened on wednesday afternoon in fremont. the man was driving along millmont drive when he heard a thud. he got out and saw the arrow sticking out of the truck. police say they don't have any suspects or witnesses. other bay area headlines now, two people died in a fiery crash in bodega bay. the car appears to have been traveling at a high rate of speed when it slammed in to a tree and burst in to flames. this happened at 1:00 this morning on highway 1 near duran beach road. and the driver of this car was killed when it got wedged under the back of a truck. the passenger is hospitalized. the crash happened on international boulevard in oakland after 1:00 this morning. police don't know how it happened and they're checking to see if excessive speed was a factor. some people in the bay area may have felt a little bit of a shake, at least if you were in the east bay. a small earthquake, magnitude 2.8, centered in concord, struck at 4:17. we don't have any reports of any damage. coming up, a heartwarming valentine's day gesture that won't soon be forgotten. the teen who bought a flower for every girl in school and why he did it. >> a bay area man nominated for a grammy. ,,,,,,,,,,,, about 800 of them to be exa. one high school senior decid to give big this valen there are some lucky girls in northern utah tonight, about 800 of them to be exact. one high school senior decided to >> [ speaking spanish ] >> you liked his white car? >> s i. >> reporter: in his homily he warned the faithful not to have dialogue with the devil because he always wins. he said only the power of the word of god can defeat him. in the days ahead, the pope visits the country's southern border and its northern border with the u.s. adriana diaz, cbs news mexico. in other news, there was a lot of temperatures we're dealing with and enjoying sunshine. while we enjoy some sunshine, warm temperatures here in the bay area. extreme cold is blasting the east. take a look at this. this is in new york city's bryant park. the fountain has frozen over. they're used to cold weather but nothing like this. wind gusts dipped temperatures to 20 degrees below zero. even being outside for a couple minutes will chill you to the bone. the mayor issued a warning for residents. >> over the last couple days some of the coldest temperatures we've seen in new york city in the last 20 years. >> according to the mayor, because of efforts from first responders, there have been no deaths reported because of the cold. meanwhile, out here we've got near record highs for the bay area. a windy night for parts of the bay. first we'll begin with a quiz. where do you suppose we're shooting this live shot from? have a look. can't tell because we're on the flags. could we pan back up to the flags? they were blowing a moment ago. come on. a little puff of reveal would reveal those flags are saying pier 39. we'll have a little puff of wind tonight around the bay area but we've got high clouds as well. as we look live, concord, 74 degrees. in oakland, 66. san francisco, 63 degrees. tomorrow morning a little bit of a bite in the air. it will become sunny after a little patchy fog, afternoon highs warmer than they were today. we'll be in record territory around the bay in the mid to upper 70s. look at these wind gusts, bright red colors, stronger winds. from tonight through tomorrow morning, there's still fairly strong winds especially up top along skyline and the hayward falls. mountains lifted up there. as the day goes on, things ease up. it will be warm as the high pressure continues to be parked just off the big sur coastline. on the futurecast, here's tomorrow at noon. a few high clouds offshore but not much. through tuesday, clear. look what's happening at the top of your screen. a few high clouds drifting in and that's a harbinger of what's happening on wednesday. by wednesday afternoon, it looks like we're going to begin to get wet. around the bay area, not a huge rain maker. that's when we expect things to begin to rain a little bit. near record highs tomorrow. rain will return late wednesday for much of the bay area. then by next weekend we'll dry out again. if you're heading out to the bay for tomorrow, looks nice. 76 for sacramento. all the way up to 81 degrees in mid-february for redding. 73 at fresno. overnight lows tonight, mid 50s will do it for the most part. you can set your watch for the sunrise tomorrow morning. 7 a.m. high temperatures tomorrow, 74 in the city. 76 in concord. 79 for oakland. south bay tomorrow, mid to upper 70s. even warmer at cupertino. over in the east bay, plenty of sun. mid 70s should do it. a few upper 70s as well. north bay will be warm too with 76 in petaluma and 78 degrees for santa rosa and up by ukiah, the numbers will nudge 80 degrees. it will continue that way. tuesday, a little bit cooler. not until wednesday when we expect things to warm up. for president's day, sunny and warm for the bay area. most temperatures will be in the 70s. in the extended forecast, dry and warm. monday and tuesday, increasing clouds will lead to a chance of showers by wednesday afternoon and evening. maybe a few lingering showers on thursday too. by the weekend the indications are, although there are some models struggling with each other about what's going to happen next, it does look like it will be dry for saturday and sunday. as for what's happening next in sports, look who's back. here's vern glenn. >> sports is knocking on the door with the best show today not named the nba all star game. a lot of valentines love. the best of the best with a golf club in their hands. golf up top... ...he may be ranked 447th in the world, a fella named ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, we're getting an update from vern what he did for his wife for valentine's day. >> waiting for her to come back. she's in phoenix right now. >> 24 hours. >> i've got a little more time to prepare.
