"as school police continue to investigate this case, i want to stress that we encourage all students, staff and families to be alert of what is happening around them." turning now to some new developments in two crimes involving cab drivers back in 20-14. one driver was beaten and robbed in sparks, another shot and killed in reno. as kolo 8 news now's ed pearce reports, one man has now been charged in both crimes. november 9, 2014 investigators pursuing violent crimes against cab drivers. early that morning a woman seen on security footage hailed a cab at the grand sierra resort, apparently telling the driver to take her to a location down a darkened side street near baldini's casino. there two masked men robbed and beat him at gunpoint. later that night, 55 year old sami amin picked up a fare in south reno, drove him to the 900 block of wheeler avenue, where he was shot. amin died later at a local hospital. investigators in both cities had immediate leads. a wallet belonging to 27 year old john austin orris was found in amin's cab. he was traced to an address within a block of the murder scene. within five days they had issued an arrest warrant. eight days later he was located in california where he had been arrested on unrelated domestic battery charges. meanwhile, within days their counterparts in sparks had arrested 26 year old miguel padilla and a women on the robbery case. apparently lacking sufficient evidence neither were brought to trial. and other than the obvious were never linked--until now. as orris appeared for a pretrial hearing in the murder cases it was learned he'd also been charged along with padilla for the sparks robbery and beating. a year ago sparks police said they were still looking for the the grand sierra. what, if any, role she may have played in the outcome of these parallel investigations isn't known. that was ed pearce reporting in carson city... wildlife officials are warning people not to feed deer. according to the nevada appeal... officials have issued several warnings, claiming that deer draw mountain lions into neighborhoods and also pose a risk for drivers. some residents are reportedly concerned that the deer may be starving. but the carson city game warden is assuring them that the deer are doing fine. people caught feeding deer face fines of up to 5-hundred dollars after the first warning. a northern nevada couple is suing "solarcity"-- claiming the company hid the fact energy rates could go up. according to the las vegas sun...the lawsuit misled people about a rate change lawmakers ordered in the spring. the suit comes after nevada regulators' decided in december to raise rates for net metering customers. public utilities commission members say the rates phase out a subsidy that traditional energy customers are paying to support solar customers. solar panel owners say their systems will now take much longer to pay off than expected.### the nevada d-m-v is putting more money into a virtual line system blamed for long wait times last summer. the state board of examiners voted to expand a 5-year contract with vendor "q-less"--- by about 300- thousand dollars. q-less offers services such as dash-pass, which allows customers to check into a virtual d- m-v line and walk to the window, when a technician is ready. last summer the d-m-v blamed dash pass for long wait times, saying people checked in from home but didn't show up. ### we're getting a look at dedicated to funding parks and recreation in reno. the city-- has to have at least 1-thousand registrations in 2016, which is the minimum number required for a specialty plate. "wingfield park, idlewild, terra sports complex, the soccer fields at moana, the money would go to support that, also city programs like sierra kids, senior programs etc, all supported by this plate" if they reach the minimum number of registrations, reno would earn 25-thousand dollars in the first year for parks and recreation.
