rodeo. >> let's start with reporter laura anthony live in rodeo. laura? >> reporter: christien, this cleanup effort well under way. this is the marine terminal behind me. that is the ship in question and around it, we're seeing at least eight smaller vessels trying to contain and presumably clean up the oil sheen that sits here. at this point, all we know is the ship arrived monday. but we don't know how much oil is actually leaked into the bay. >> the coast guard is investigating, but still doesn't know if one thing led to another when it comes to connecting a mysterious odor with two oil sheens. >> they do seem to be tied because of the fact they happened at the same time. >> the mystery started when people are were calling 911 to complain of an odd odor. >> it was strong. it burns your throat, your nose. >> yeah. bad right -- >> statement, it was spotted in san pablo bay. it was a mile long and 40 yards wide, enough to prompt the ferry to temporarily halt service from vallejo to san francisco. >> there's only two buses running. it will take all day. nobody has that kind of time. >> officials at the phillips 66 refinery confirmed there was another sheen by a terminal. one discovered just after 8:00 this morning. the tanker arrived in rodeo on monday. a phillips 66 smokes pan said "operations at the marine terminal have been temporarily shut down. we are working closely with the coast guard and other agencies regarding the response." >> by midday, an orange boom was going around the ship. california fish and wildlife and bay keeper confirmed they have teams on the way. >> there's a lot of sensitive wetland communities in that area. want to make sure the areas around point san pablo and pa knoll are protected and that the wet lands aren't inundated. >> there's no reports of injured or oiled wildlife. abc 7 news. laura anthony. a lot of people in vallejo got sick from the mysterious odor. vic lee continues our team coverage live in vallejo tonight. vic? >> reporter: dan, as you pointed out, even at this late hour, no one knows for sure where that odor came from. we may never know definitively because that smell is gone. we did talk to a public health officer who told us earlier today that everyone that went to the hospital last night was treated and released. no one was admitted. no one became seriously ill. >> nigh eyes and nose was burning. >> many wearing masks poured into emergency rooms at la hey hoe's two hospitals. >> 100 people showed up or went to the hospitals in vallejo. with symptoms such as nausea, headache, dizziness. >> countless others smelled the strong odor but didn't go to the e.r. >> all outside and inside the house was starting to smell. >> by 8:02 p.m., the fire department received more than 500 calls from people complaining about the mysterious smell. people described it, well, differently. >> it smelled more like asphalt and like someone was perhaps putting new roofing, like if you were to burn something in your frying pan, like had the oil sitting in there. >> it smelled like gas. >> all agreed about one thing. >> it was very strong. let's put it that way. >> reporter: everyone was talking about it today at the senior citizens center. she had a rough night. >> my oxygen machine takes the air to generate oxygen. i could smell it. i had to take the machine off. i couldn't sleep last night. >> reporter: by 11:00 p.m., the fire department determined the odor was not coming from within the city. the mystery continued. vic lee, abc 7 news. we've just received word that the very indonesia marina will limit the travel. we've been sending out push alerts on this mysterious odor in vallejo since people were reporting it last night. breaking news where you live. download the abc 7 news app and enable the push alerts. new at 6:00, mountain view police released individual -- take a look. it happened just before 10:00 a.m. police say a man in his early 20s walked up to a nissan leaf and smashed the back windshield and grabbed the backpack. anyone who recognizes this man is asked to call mountain view police. an accomplished stanford graduate student died in a climbing accident. 26-year-old maria birukova was a student at the stanford school of medicine. her body was found in the eastern sierra nevada mountains. she was studying to be an allergist and won a fellowship for her research. a professor calls her one of the university's quote, superstars. michael meehan has resigned his post after serving in the department nearly seven years. dee williams ridley announced and accepted the resignation this morning. captain andrew greenwood, this man who has been with the berkeley police department more than 30 years has been appointed acting chief. berkeley's -- he said the resignation came as a surprise. the acting chief and the rest of the rank and file. it's understandable. >> 6 1/2 years is a long time in a very high pressure city. a lot of stuff on the chief's plate. it's a very large job to do. i don't think anybody at any point could blame him for making the decision. i know it was the right time for him. we wish him the best. >> meehan is the fifth bay area police chief to resign since may. happening in oakland, the city is holding the second public meeting today to give residents a chance to have input on the search for the police chief. mayor libby schaaf hopes to interview candidates by november and hire the new chief by january. a meeting at the east oakland senior center just got under way. that follows a forum at the lincoln recreation center from 240k 6:00 in cantonese. >> tonight police in the north bay are expanding that investigation into a man suspected of childabuse. he was arrested sunday by police. a former boys and girls club employee is suspected of abusing kids during overnight trips to local park. after the arrest, police got three calls from people claiming to be victims or kno victims. if you think you're a victim or know someone who may have been one, contact heelsburg police immediately. a double murder case in oakland ended when a judge convicted the gunman to death. one of the victims was just 8 years old. abc 7 news reporter eric thomas has the story tonight. >> reporter: the judge who sentenced darnell williams to death said he was responsible for a quote, orange gee of slaur and revenge. this is me dare is' mom. >> i am truly grateful and thankful even though it's hurtful that my son is gone. i'm glad that animal can't kill anybody else. >> a jury convicted him of killing several and injuring many others. prosecutors said he was trying to murder the family of a man he blamed for killing a friend, specifically targeting the children. >> her brother, he has to grow up and the only thing he'll have is just a remembrance of his sister. >> several weeks later, williams rob and shot an than i ma dare is claiming he was a snitch. as angry as they are, these two relatives would have preferred life in prison photographer the death penalty. >> on death row, you'll just sit. it's like you're comfortable. but life, you have to worry about it, you have to look behind your back and worry about everything. >> no. i think he should do life. life without parole. >> his mother wouldn't shed a tear if williams were put to death. >> i don't have any sympathy for him. like i said, he has shown no remorse this whole time. >> williams may be headed for death row, but a measure on the november ballot would allow californians to throw out the death penalty, leaving williams in legal limbo. in oakland, eric thomas, abc 7 news. the port of oakland thinks it's come up with a storage solution following a bankruptcy of a shipping company. the portsaid it will accept empty cargo containers. this will free up loads. they filed for bankruptcy protection last month. many of the carrier ships are not allowed to berth at ports and left stranded at sea. east bay mud went somewhere it had never gone before to repair aging water mains. near uc berkeley, they used a helicopter to transport 2500 feet of pipeline to panoramic hill. crews tried to drive the pipes up the hill, but the turns were just far too sharp. >> it's very narrow, very windy and they tried. they had the diesel trucks going up with 40-foot lengths of pipe. it was too difficult. >> this is the first time east bay mud used a chopper to move pipeline. the helicopter airlifted 15 loads today. that saved the utility $200,000 and six weeks of work. students at oakland unified school district made a statement this week against police brutality. some members of the honor band took a knee last night while playing the national anthem at the athletics game. in a facebook post today, the school district says the students were making the statement of solidarity and is proud of the courageous students. still to come on abc 7 news at 6:00, a very ambitious goal. >> so this is something that we police shooting continuing right now. once again, they are turning violent. our abc sister station in charlotte reports shots have been fired in the area of these protests. at least one person has been hit. medics are responding to the scene. this has been going on for hours now. get updates from abc 7 news app. download the app and enable push alerts. flights out of beal air force base have been stopped. they have little information on what caused the fleen crash in the area north of sacramento. killing one pilot and injuring a second. the plane went down yesterday morning as we reported shortly after taking off from its home base at balee. >> from our perspective the significant loss is the loss of life. we're focusing on that family and friends to make sure they're well-cared for. >> the pilots' names have not been released. people near the crash site joined force toss try to rescue the pilots who did eject from the plane. facebook ceo mark zuckerberg and his wife have committed to donating 99% of his company's shares to charity. the first efforts focused on education. they turned to pushing medical breakthroughs with a multibillion dollar donation. abc 7 news reporter carolyn tyler has the story from ucsf. >> imagine a world without serious illnesses. facebook founder mark zuckerberg and his pediatrician wife are donating $3 billion over the next decade to try to wipe out, prevent or at least manage all disease by the end of the century. >> that doesn't mean that no one will ever get sick, but it does mean our children and their children could get sick a lot less. >> zuckerberg says most people die today of four types of diseases, cancer, heart, neurological or infectious. he believes the answer is to fund research to create new tools and housing units can go forward with the city giving a preference to certain residents. federal housing officials today informed city leaders they cannot reserve 40% of the units for people in one particular neighborhood. but they can set aside those units for any low-income resident at high risk of being displaced from their current neighborhood. the city has been delaying the lottery for the willie b kennedy complex until hud issued today's rielg. 6,000 people have applied to live in these 98 apartments. a bay area company is set to be the first major dairy to sell nongmo conventional milk. starting next year, the store will offer the non-gmo milk. the conventional milk is expected to be cheaper than organic milk. advocates are worried about the unknown health and environmental risks associated with genetically modified foods. there may be one fewer rival in the host to bid the olympics. rome officially opposed her city's -- it will only bring debt. if rome does officially autumn officially begins at 7:21 a.m. tomorrow. we'll have summer-like sizzle this weekend after a couple of days of below average temperatures. overnight, this will be the picture. a few passing high clouds and there's some moisture mixed in with the passing clouds overnight. there could be a spot or two of light drizzle. although it's not likely to develop. then as we get into the mid-morning hours tomorrow, we'll see the clouds pretty much clearing out. the chance of any drizzle will end by then. overnight lows in the low 50s. tomorrow's highs range from upper 50s at the coast where it will be windy once again to mainly 630s around the bay. upper 70s, the mildest inland locations. not much of a warm day for the first of fall tomorrow. but it's going to warm up to summer-like levels over the weekend. much warmer, in fact, inland areas on saturday. low to mid-90s there. get set to sweat on sunday. highs inland rise into the upper 90s. we'll see upper 80s to low 90s in the bay. san francisco will top out at 86 degrees on saturday. sunday will be hotter inland and around the bay with highs up around 100 degrees in the warmest spots. here's the accuweather seven-day forecast. you nguyen, abc 7 news. the fbi wants to speak with two men who took a suitcase and left a bomb behind in new york city. agents released a surveillance image of those men today. that's what you're looking at. the bomb did not explode. someone else found it and alerted police. the men are considered witnesses not suspects. another bomb, as you know, blew up several blocks away and injured 29 people on saturday night. a suspect is in custody. he faces charges of planting bombs in new york and new jersey. one of the bombs in new jersey exploded. when we see a series of terrorist attacks like this past weekend, we wonder could that happen here? >> the fbi has given the iteam unprecedented access to the counterterrorism program working to keep the bay area safe. >> a preview of a report here at tesla is trying to prevent hot car deaths. the palo alto company will automatically keep the temperature below 105 degrees by opening vents or turning on the air conditioner as needed. the feature
