that what is a flashbang or what that was. >> they were standing on vehicles stuck on the road. others breaking storefront windows and in some cases looting. all of this outrage began on tuesday when police shot and killed lamont scott. his family says he was unarmed, but the officer was forced to shoot. >> he exited with a handgun as the officers yelled at him to drop it. >> he is also african-american and is now on paid leave. for some protesters it is mounting tension and it is disheartening. >> this pisses me off. i do not want my son to see this. my son loves cops. >> they say vie 11 is not the -- violence is not the answer. >> we are working to bring peace and calm back to our stivment we know this is not who charlotte is. >> in addition to the protestor seven police flames burned about one acre. it took an hour to bring the fire under control. more breaking news in concord. two people were shot near clayton road. police were on the scene and there is no word on how the victims are doing or if any arrests have been made. san jose state university organized meetings for students after swastikas were found in two dormitories. hateful language was discovered in washburn hall and campus village. there was an investigation last night. san jose state's president says she is saddened and outraged by what happened. developing news from solano county where coast guard is now investigating two oil slicks in san pablo bay. that's after an odor sent people rushing to local hospitals. abc7 news reporter is live in rodeo with the story. katie? >> behind me is one of the oil refineries, but investigators are not calling [inaudible] the source of the leak at this point or the source of the oil slick. they want to determine exactly where it came from. a strange odor permeated the air around the san pablo bay and sent people to the hospital in vallejo last night. >> it was strong. it burns your throat and nose. >> yeah, like rotten eggs. >> like bad, rotten eggs. >> today two oil slicks are further compounding the mystery. one slick is reported by a mile long by 40 yards wide and could be seen from the air in the northern area of the bay. >> we don't know the actual volume and we don't know the material and we don't know the source. >> in saw knee shaw they brace for a mess by placing a boom across the yacht harbor. yet they seemingly disappear without clean up efforts. >> it is possible it dispersed in the water, but that will take more information. at this time there is no visible sheen in the air. >> the coast guard collected samples before the oil slipped away. >> we collected samples to try to determine what the oil was and where it was coming from. there is a process to identifying that oil. >> there is no time frame for when the test results will be returned. at this point there is no reports of injured or oiled wildlife. abc7 news. >> in mountain view police hope you can identify this man captured on surveillance video breaking into a car. he took off with a backpack on monday morning. it was a smash and grab. the burglary happened on pair avenue and north shoreline boulevard. he drove away in a hyundai saw saw -- sonata. sacramento's mayor is accused of hitting back after a protestor hit him in the face with a pie. it happened during a benefit dinner. the sacramento bee reports a man smashed a pie in mayor kevin johnson's face. a spokeswoman said the mayor hit the protestor. they report that johnson tackled the man and it ended in a bloody brawl. the mayor's office says the man was taken to the hospital and faces a charge of assault. >> dan: tonight stanford students and faculty are mourning the loss of a fourth year medical student who died in a climbing accident. >> 26-year-old maria baracova's body was recovered yesterday. melanie woodrow is live on the stanford campus melanie? >> reporter: they say she was one of the superstars on campus. her passion for research was matched by her passion for climbing. she was smiling in 2013 as she received her white coat at the stanford school of medicine. >> dr. charles prober first met her during orientation. her research was a combination of immunology and microbiology and engineering. >> it was aimed toward the prevention and treatment of complicated infections. >> outside of academics she spent as much time as she could rock climbing. >> this is something she cared deeply about. i learned that she was accepting an offer to go to utah versus accepting an offer going to stanford. >> balance ultimately guided her decisionful in her med student bio she wrote i found it important the current students i met were able to lead balanced lives and were encouraged to pursue interests outside academics. she was climbing with a partner when she lost her footing and fell 800 to 1,000 feet. a chp helicopter assisted in the recovery operation. >> all of the students were devastated. >> reporter: she was a fourth year grad student bay area. how many threats like this come in each year and how many turn out to be real? >> you see what happened this weekend. the pressure cooker bomb and the pipe bomb at a marine corp charity run caused no damage because the race was delayed and the knife attack that injured 9 people. >> there was at least one victim who was asked if they were muslim. >> and you wonder could it happen here? after all isis put out that video in june naming the golden gate bridge and financial district as possible targets. >> there is always a heightened sense if something like that is pushed out in popular media. >> to get answers i went to the san francisco federal building where the fbi granted me exclusive access to the counter terrorism program and the assistant special agent in charge. >> what keeps you up at night. is there some scenario that sticks with you? >> the one thing that concerns me the most is the new face of terror and how difficult it is to detect a single individual acting on his own. >> reporter: case in point, matthew is serving 15 years in prison. the fbi provided this infrared video of his nighttime arrest after he tried to set off a car bomb at an oakland bank in support of the taliban. he got the explosives from an undercover agent who made sure they wouldn't work. more common are those who tried to fly out of sfo and he pled guilty to material support of a designated foreign terrorist organization and await sentencing. technology is helping terrorist groups find supporters in the bay area. >> they can reach direct through encrypted technology 24/7. >> he gave may a tour of the fbi -- he gave me a tour of the fbi facility including counterterrorism one. here they processed them and they turned out to be dead ends. >> they are poison letters and information that we received from overseas that suggest we may have a nefarious act. >> they are worked with a joint terrorism task force. ma operate from the sensitive compartmented sensitive facility. and when a threat becomes imminent x they fire up the emergency operation center. >> during 9/11, thousands of calls came into this exact room. >> he showed us the workload and how information comes into the intake center and how it is assessed by am lists and dispatched to the fbi agents and through crisis management coordinators. there is no bay area action to the attacks and no imminent threat here. >> the message coming out from the foreign terrorist organizations is softer targets by any means. >> a cafe, someone in a church. >> they tell me san francisco is like any other european city with a soft target on every street corner. that's why we have to all do our part. see something, say something. it really is important. >> the police can't be on your windshield there may be a drop or two. cool for the first day of fall and then we change things up. highs on your thursday on the mild side x windy and upper 50s and the mid60s. here is your forecast. it is much warmer and 90s inland. 60s at the coast and the temperatures sore on sunday. 80s at the coastline. it is going to get hot. we will have the autumn sizzle with 100's showing up.
