obstruction of justice charge. bonds said, i'm thankful for the outcome and the opportunity to seek justice. vic lee is on the story. >> good for barry. i'm happy for him. i'm glad it's gotten a result so he can move on. >> it's about time. that's great news. >> i agree. it's been long enough. >> he should be in the hall of game. >> bonds has been more active with his old team in the past year. he attended spring training. he helped younger players with their batting. this is a case that's dragged on for more than a decade. he wa linked to a sports drug lab on the peninsula called balco. and he was asked in 2003, if his trainer gave him anything that required a syringe. he was sentenced to 30 days at home all the while he appealed his conviction. the ninth circuit court of appeals did that bonds' answer did not affect the case against balco. we interviewed scott osler. he was not surprised. he said the conviction was unfair. >> i had never heard him give any answer that wasn't round about and evasive. that's just the way he talks. i didn't think he was trying to break a law. >> osler said he will vote for bonds for the hall of fame. and this may not be over. the prosecution, the department justice, may appeal this to the supreme court. vic lee, abc 7 news. "sports illustrated" estimates that the trial cost the government $6 million. we'll have more on this story on channel 7. tune in there. moving on a gun battle on the streets of vallejo left a 7-year-old boy wounded. investigators at the scene where a stray bullet hit this boy, leaving him seriously injured. "the times herald" reports the gunfire break out during a wake for a man. it appears two people randomly shot into the group of about 40 people. a search is under way for the gunmen responsible. meantime a search for a 17-year-old from cupertino. connor sullivan showed up for his first period class monday morning but hasn't been seen since. chris nguyen spoke with the parents late today. >> reporter: at the stevens creek dam and reservoir in cupertino. >> connor? >> reporter: volunteers, hoping to track down a missing teenage boy. >> we went back by the dam, looking in the water and everything. and calling his name. >> reporter: 17-year-old connor sullivan was last seen on monday at monta vista high school. the three-sport varsity athlete seen here, attended his first class. he didn't show up to any remaining classes. nor did he attend track practice like he was scheduled to. >> he's a quiet leader. everyone respects him. and this is just unforeseen. just absolutely out of the blue. >> reporter: the santa clara county sheriff's office call this an open investigation. late this afternoon, connor's parents thanked the community for its support. now, a new concern. >> just afraid that somehow, somewhere else, we'll be searching. i'm hoping he's stayed near home. i just want him home. i want my baby home. >> reporter: sullivan's coaches, out here trying to get the word out. >> it's such a departure from the connor we've come to know and love. and you know the unknown is the scary part of it. >> reporter: volunteers will search into the evening. in cupertino, chris nguyen, abc 7 news. a retired police sergeant is accused of swindling 500,000 people from an elderly woman he once arrested. he was arested on monday. prosecutors say he met the victim when he busted her for prostitution in 2002. she says she gave him $450,000, paying part of his mortgage and his property taxes. investigators say he promised her they would get married when he retired. hayward place said they did not know he was involved in any illegal activity before he retired in 2013. heroic neighbors rushed to a fire that sent a woman to the hospital. the early morning fire was huge by the time it was discovered and 911 was called. this cell phone video of the fire was captured by olin stillwell. neighbors yelled to evacuate. some stayed behind, helping others that could not get out quickly. >> the lady's apartment that was on fire, she was stuck. i asked other neighbors to come and kick the door open. that's how they got her out. she was frantic. the ambulance took her. >> people helped each other. a police officer was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation. what caused the fire is unknown at this point. in san francisco today, a sum summons between the mayor and other groups. solutions may be coming to help the homeless, but just for a few people at a time. >> reporter: in san francisco they're impossible to ignore and sometimes as difficult to help. the chronic homeless. an estimated one in every five of them may be veterans. >> i'm one of the lucky ones. >> reporter: after years on the street jack hanna now lives in city substized housing on carnie street. same for harry, a former navyman who hit the streets after a divorce and alcohol problems. this entire building dedicated to once-homeless veterans. are there more guys like you that need this? >> a lot. >> reporter: they may get more help after a visit from veterans affairs secretary robert mcdonald, who met with the goal of getting homeless veterans safe havens in tough cities. >> we have to determine whether or not we have the commitment to take care of the people after the war. >> reporter: in san francisco today, the secretary pledged $1.8 million a year for the next decade to house veterans. it will subsidize 111 rooms in the city with more on the way. >> i got 6,000 maybe 7,000 people on the streets. i'm not going to let that number scare me. i'm going to do 10 at a time, 20 at a time. >> reporter: for vets, finally having a roof over their head is believing. >> been almost three months. >> reporter: living is believing. >> heat. that's all i need. and a nice bed. >> reporter: small steps. and maybe some solutions to what remains an overwhelming social problem. in san francisco, wayne freedman abc 7 news. a catholic website is defending the san francisco archbishop. it's in response to a group of local catholics asked the pope to replace the archbishop. the group said that the archbishop is mean-spirited. a virginia-based life sight news is raising money to buy an ad defending him. they want to thank the pope. today, the church announced the archbishop will not attend the march against same-sex marriage in washington, d.c. a bill to make vaccinations mandatory for california schoolchildren won the surprise approval today of a state senate committee. there was so much opposition last week, the vote was delayed. and the bill was thought to be dead. the latest version allows unvaccinated children to be homeschooled with other homeschool students. the bill must get through the judiciary committee before moving on to the full senate. just got this fire under control. >> abc 7 morning news, weekdays. in oakland, the people planning the coliseum say they are not discouraged by developments in the city of carson in southern california. the council there moved forward with plans to build a new stadium for the oakland raiders. >> it's christmas to me. you know, my raiders are coming back. the chargers. l.a.'s ready for this. we ready. >> reporter: the party is on in the los angeles county city of carson. >> football is coming to carson. >> reporter: after the city council there voted to move ahead for a giant stadium plan for the raiders and san diego chargers. >> we're still working aggressively. >> reporter: those involved in stadium planning in oakland seem mostly unfazed. >> the carson city council had to vote to keep this issue moving forward. it doesn't really change our position or our game plan whatsoever. >> in order to save the teams, we must also support the teams. >> reporter: to that end coliseum city developer addressed business leaders and follow developers in oakland, about creating the kind of venue that would entice both teams to stay. >> we see the opportunity to be part of something that will change the face of the city and the region. >> reporter: one problem the ownership says they are not interested in sharing property with the raiders, even if each team has their own building. the biggest issue parking. >> we don't harbor grudges against their view on it. our mission is and weelieve it's best for the region and for the city and for the county, to have both teams still here. >> bring them back. bring them back. >> reporter: one thing is certain, all of that partying in carson puts more pressure on planners in oakland to find the money and get a deal done soon. in oakland, laura anthony, abc 7 news. on this earth day, we're going to give you an example of social engineering, aimed at conserving water. the idea is to motivate people to change their behavior. and it's being used to get students to cut back on the water they use. david louie shows us two examples at local campuses. >> reporter: across campus 400 of these devices are being installed at water meters. they monitor water use and transmit the data over cell network. the information can be accessed on smartphones or computer monitors students and faculty on a daily basis. it identifies possible water leaks. the university is hoping the data will be used to modify behavior, such as staking shorter showers or doing fewer loads of laundry. the project replaces a labor intensive system that delivered water use on a monthly basis. >> we spend a lot of time reading the meters. that's several hours of work we'll be able to avoid and use in other areas. so, that's labor reduction. and also, the amount of time we spend generating reports. >> i'm pretty competitive. it might change my habits a little bit. i can be a little more conscious i think. so, probably change a little bit, yeah. >> reporter: at santa clara university, ellen quo is demonstrating how to take a water-saving navy shower. it's urging students to cut their showers by 60 seconds. >> making this visible is an effective way to do it. we're turning off the fountains on campus. as a symbol that people recognize the significance of the drought. >> some admit they shower for ten minutes. is it much of a sacrifice? >> i don't think so. >> reporter: is this a habit you're going to develop all the time? do it every day? >> yeah. i don't see why not. >> reporter: campuses trying to find ways to get students to save water. in santa clara, david louie abc 7 news. if you're looking for a way to monitor how much water you use in the shower, there are a few products out there. this one shows prompted a red alert for the city. authorities have evacuated the residents with within a 600-mile radius of the volcano. large amounts of ash coming from the volcano. but no hot rocks or lava has been seen, at least not yet. there's some developing news out of paris. a terror plot thwarted. and a24-year-old computer science student platting to unleash an attack by churches. he was discovered by accident. >> reporter: a residence hall for students in paris. so ordinary. but behind the sealed door of apartment 310, police say a terror attack was in the works. the alleged mastermind a 24-year-old computer science student from algeria. they say his plan, kill christians in churches as they worshiped on sunday morning. this is one of the targets, it's believed. the old church. on sunday morning the suspect was in this area, armed. and planning an imminent attack. that morning, around 8:00 a.m. a quiet paris suburb, police say he thought and killed a stranger who was sitting in her car, working on her computer. a half-hour later a speed camera captures his car about two miles away driving fast. at 8:50 a.m., he calls emergency services. saying he accidentally shot himself. police find him outside his home on the sidewalk bleeding from gunshot wound in the leg. a trail of blood led leads them to his car. inside, a cache of weapons, bullet-proof vests, mans and in his apartment, documents referencing al qaeda and isis. and authorities are looking for accomplices. they have evidence that he was in contact with someone in syria, who was giving him directions to attack churches here. terry moran, abc news, france. there's this. a radio active drone landed on the roof of the prime minister japan's office today in central tokyo. a member of his staff spotted the drone this morning and alerted authorities. local media says the drone was equipped with a small camera. and a plastic bottle containing small amounts of radioactive material. the prime minister was out of the country at the time. it has been a day of protest in baltimore over the death of a man while in police custody. some were marching in the streets. 600 people marched in outrage over the death of 25-year-old freddy gray. he was detained by baltimore police. autopsy shows he had a broken back. the justice department is investigating. six officers, meantime, have been suspended. a group of scientists say they have modified the genome of human embryos. the team set out to see whether it could correct a gene defect that causes a blood disease by iting fertilized eggs. the group says it did not try to start a pregnancy. and for ethical reasons, only conducted the tests in embryos that were abnormal. the researchers say the method used was not very accurate. the report was published in "protein and cell." dr. oz is breaking his silence after calls for his resignation. some doctors say say he promotes quack treatments. but now, oz is answering the critics. and vowing they will not silence him. here's linsey davis. >> reporter: america's trusted tv doctor, speaking out. >> freedom of speech is the most fundamental right we have as americans. and these ten doctors are trying to silence that right. >> reporter: dr. mehmet oz, fighting back against that group of doctors calling for him to be reproved from his faculty position at colombia university. >> we will not be silenced. >> reporter: the ten physicians, accusing oz of promoting quack treatments, specifically taking issue for his opposition to genetically modified food. one doctor is a advocate of gmos. another doctor is a convicted felon, serving 22 months in prison for medicaid fraud. four of the ten doctors have been liked to the american council on science and health, which has received grant money from companies that sell gmos. >> today, that changes. >> reporter: oz has found himself on the hot seat before. even called before congress. >> i can't figure this out, dr. oz. i don't get why you need to say this stuff because you know it's not true. >> i am second-guessing every word i use on the show right now. i've heard the message. i get it. >> reporter: linsey davis, abc news new york. if you've know about it until that very moment. it was an emotional scene obviously, for everyone there. really touching. people commenting online that the video was just really really moving. and they lady's and that girl's day. the transgender community is waiting anxiously to see the abc news energy with bruce jenner this friday on channel 7. will it be a teachable moment? or is it exploitation? caroline tyler sat down with one of the best-known transgender activists in the bay area to discuss her journey and what could lie ahead for bruce jenner. >> she used to be a self-described alpha male. >> i was the epitome of white affluence, white male dominance. white male entitlement. it didn't make me happy. >> reporter: theresa sparks left that life behind about 20 years ago. twice divorce with three children, she began her journey as a transgender woman. >> this is something you thought about that you lived. you experienced all of your life. and at some point you have to say, you know, it's time. i need to be who i am. >> sparks moved to san francisco and became an activist. here she is in 1999 one of the coordinators for remembrance day. her activism led to an appointment on the police vision in 2004. and later, a historic vote as its president. >> that was the shock for me and the police. >> reporter: this trail blazer heads san francisco's human rights commission. the 66-year-old knows a thing or two about being under the microscope. and expects diane sawyer's interview with bruce jenner to hope him up to intense scrutiny. >> you see it now. his fingernails or whether he has breasts or not. >> reporter: the interview is expected to give jenner his first opportunity to address reports he may be undergoing a gender transition journey of his own. sparks is hopeful the public spotlight will serve as an aha moment. >> hopefully people go, i get it for or i'm not afraid of it. >> reporter: theresa sparks believe that time has changed. when she received an honor as woman of the year in the state capital in 2003 republican lawmakers turned their backs. last year, three transgender women received that award. they received a standing ovation. >> you can
