Fire, apple tv and online. And a good wednesday morning midweek for you as we move things along. Im marcus washington. And im kris sanchez. Laura garcia has the day off. Were bringing all the color. We showed up this morning, i hope you wore your sunglasses. We still have some showers on the radar. You got some . A couple drops. You are not imagining it. We have plenty of activity, instability on the radar. You can see satellite radar popping up, even thunderstorm activity just off the coast. You could see it right here if i kind of zoom this in closer using our mobile Doppler Radar storm ranger you can see the shower activity pushing through santa rosa, petaluma, san rafael. If i zoom further south you can see the red scan. Now there is a possibility we could see some of those thunderstorms move inland and we could get an isolated pocket or two of heavy downpours at times especially around areas in the coastline. As far as our temperatures go, well start out in the 60s. Well bump up into the 70s by the afternoon that will leave us with a very humid mix of sun and clouds for this evening. Lets get a check of the traffic with mike. Vianey, pretty calm right now. Leftovers from the rain and as vianey has been talking about, a few sprinkles. I have them right around here in santa clara. Keep that in mind. Nothing major but they are scattered around. Looking over to the nimitz around 98, just south of the coliseum, reports of a crash in both directions. Were looking very light right now. The crash is on the shoulder so you can get by without any problem. Still slick in a couple of spots. Back to you. Thanks, mike. New this morning californias Wine Industry is facing a threat that is about one inch in diameter but it could devastate the entire industry. Nbc lx contributor greg bledsoe has more on this. Greg, tell us about why theyre concerned right now . Reporter well, you mentioned how small it is. Its an insect, a Spotted Lanternfly is what you call it. Youll see it basically looks like a colorful moth. There it is right there. Theyre pretty. Theyre beautiful. But they can cause a lot of damage especially when it comes to grapes and vineyards. What they do is not only eat the fruit but leave a honeydew residue that can rot and kill an entire grapevine, an entire vineyard. They are devastating potentially. The reason we know they can do that, were already seeing it not just around the world but here in the united states. Pennsylvania has had vineyards hit by this. There are 11 states in the country that have seen this insect. As far as the history of it and where it came from, theyre invasive. Scientists think they came over from china some time around 2014 or so and since then have been slowly spreading. I mentioned 11 states so far. All of those are in the eastern part of the country. We have not seen this yet in california, but its coming. So the big question is, when is it coming . We have a pretty good educated guess about that in the summer. Researchers at North CarolinaState University use the same technology we use to predict how covid would spread and plugged in the data how the insects have been spreading the last eight years and their best guess when it will get to california is in the next five to ten years, more likely on the latter end of that. You think five to ten years away, we have forever. Not the case. We talked to winemakers, the state, this is a big deal. We have to start doing something about it now. We talked to a winemaker and here is what he had to say. Ive been working in the wine Group Industry since i was old enough to hold a shovel, and i dont remember another threat that was this scary to me. So if something were to happen to grapes in california, the rest of the country would feel it . Absolutely. The rest of the world would feel it. Reporter the reason the rest of the world would feel it is because california makes 80 of the wine in this country and we export a lot of wine. This is a huge industry. The state is taking it seriously. The Spotted Lanternfly is already on the states the Cali Department of and agriculture put it on the list. Inspectors at state borders can be looking for this thing and not just the actual fly, the insect itself, but eggs, because they dont travel well. They dont fly but can lay their eggs on trains and cars and thats how they travel. We saw an egg match come across into california this past summer on a truckload of firewood coming from new jersey. Theyre looking for it. Its a matter of time when it gets here and establishes a population. Thats where a lot of the concern is and because weve already seen vineyards hit by this in pennsylvania and other parts of the world. It seems grapes right now are a big concern for the state.
