You could see this all the way from san diego to the bay area. Some people in arizona also reported seeing it. Today in the bays Christie Smith talked to the experts from the Science Center in oakland. Oh, my god reporter from Southern California to the bay area, social media lit up with a mystery. A light in the sky. Jacqueline lomelli was stunned in San Francisco. Me and my friend were sitting there talking. I looked up and i seen this blue light that was, like, flglowingn the sky. What is that . It was really strange. Reporter ramos caught this shot in the east bay. Thats something. That is not a plane. That is not a weather balloon. Reporter a viewer shared this on our nbc bay area Facebook Page while another video came to us from the north bay. What is that . It started behind this, we were over on the other ramp so we could see in that direction, started from there and arced to the rest out toward the Pacific Ocean. Reporter at the space and Science Center in oakland, astronomer Gerald Mckeegan has been busy offering an explanation. We got a lot of phone calls asking whether it was a meteor or something else. What it was. Of course, we all recognized it right away as a missile launch. Reporter a trident missile test flight from a sub off the coast of Southern California by the navy according to a spokesperson. It was not armed. Part of a scheduled system evaluation. Many reported seeing a blue green color after sunset. Although it was mostly dark here in the bay area, you go 20 miles up, and youre still in sunlight. So what they were seeing was the plume of the rocket in sunlight. This was weird. This was like a giant cone of light, you know. It just looked li eed like a sp. No ufos, no aliens, no meteors, just a plain old rocket launch. Reporter krChristie Smith, y area news. Four people lucky to be alive after a Small Plane Crashes in the south bay at reed hill view airport in san jose at 9 00 last night. All four passengers are okay. One man was taken to a nearby hospital with minor injuries. The singleengine cessna ended up upside down on the tarmac. Firefighters say when they arrived, all four people inside it already managed to crawl out. Firefighters say the pilot tried to ram the plane but the wheels hit the dirt instead of the tarmac. The plane was inbound. And the landing gear went off basically off road a little bit of the landing strip. And caused the plane to tilt. And it flipped over on its side. Fire crews made sure there was no fuel on the ground. Reed hill view airport was closed for a short period while firefighters responded. Records show the plane is owned by tomo llc in san jose. New this morning, several families out in the cold after a fire ripped through a twostory apartment complex. This happened just a block from Oak Grove High School in san jose. Crews are still cleaning up the scene but heres what we know so far. The fair broke out just after 3 00 this morning. Eight apartments were evacuated during the firefight. The roof did collapse but no one inside was hurt. Firefighters are telling us that that fire jumped from one unit to another through the attic. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Getting answers about what happened to an inmate who died in custody just got more complicated. The Blue Ribbon Commission was created to investigate the death of an inmate who allegedly was beat. By three guards at the Santa Clara County jail. The group is supposed to spend the next six months working with the public to come up with recommendations on how to improve the jail system. But the Commission Just learned the county has hired its own independent consultant to assess jalen cans. Some Commission Members are now concerned about the dual investigation. I dont want to spend time duplicating whats being done but i dont know. Reporter this retired judge was appointed to lead that commission. She says she will step down if more information is not provided about the countys consultant by the next meeting of that commission. Well, traffic is bad in San Francisco, and its about to get worse. Expect major delays around at t park at least for the next week. Construction is taking place in the area for the next phase of the central subway project. The 1. 7mile subway line will connect chinatown, downtown, mission bay and the bay shore. Crews are putting in special tracks at fourth king streets. Work begins friday night. It will last about a week. Drivers are being told to avoid that area. New developments in the investigation into what downed a russian airplane in egypt. Investigators are now focusing on a sudden noise heard on the cockpit voice recorder. The noise will be analyzed and compared with sounds from other crashes. Experts say that could tell them if an explosive device created the sound. U. S. Officials believe it was a bomb. Isis claims it downed the plane to avenge russias bombing of syria. He now coaches at san joses presentation high school. Super bowl 50 is coming to levis stadium. The actual event still months away, but those in charge are already scouting for help. But theyre not just looking in santa clara. Theyre also asking for volunteers in San Francisco. People attended a volunteer Orientation Center at the masonic auditorium to get details from the Host Committee. Volunteers will help with visitors in San Francisco where most of the official events leading up to super bowl 50 are happening. If people think that you have to be a football fan, but really most of the people here just have a love for the bay area. Com. So far there are about 4500 confirmed volunteers. The Host Committee says it still needs about 1500 more. San francisco wont get all of the action, aside from the game itself, the south bay will also benefit from americas biggest sporting event. Today in the bays Damian Trujillo has more from downtown san jose where one of the teams will be staying while preparing for super bowl 50. Reporter theyre fired up at the new deluxe eatery and drinkery in downtown san jose. The super bowl is coming. We cant wait and were going to have some nice happy hours. Reporter the restaurant opened only last week and is ready to get a crash course on what to expect for the super bowl. We are so excited. Reporter kim is san joses deputy city manager in charge of economic development. She called a mting for next week with downtown merchants to highlight the expectations during super bowl week. We want them to understand the large numbers of visitors who are going to be here and when theyre going to arrive in our city so that they can plan that they have enough food and beverage and hospitality to serve everyone. Reporter city council will alsoen is consider a temporary ordinance to ban Street Vendors and counterfeit Merchandise Sales from the downtown area. The nfc team will use a weight room at san jose states south campus during super bowl week. The team will also have a choice of two football fields to practice on. We have two practice fields here. 200yard practice fields where the offense can work on one field, the defense can work on another, and if we have rain, the nfc team can go into spartans stadium and get its work done. Were tracking some showers this morning that are moving through. In fact, its light shower ted but its nonetheless some showers. You can see from the doppler that green moving through the north bay. Thats some light stuff. A few hundredths of an inch has been picked up from this band moving through the north bay. Its not a whole lot. Enough just to get the ground wet. This is kind of like the appetizer, if you will. Ahead of the main course. Thats going to arrive tonight. So light showers through the day today. Gray skies and clouds really starting to increase especially from San Francisco and the east bay as well. Still seeing a good amount of sunshine for the pps and south bay. There it is making its way across the Pacific Northwest. Showers and thunderstorms for the Pacific Northwest. Even across Northern California overnight showers move through eureka, now making their way over towards chico. Here at home, eventually its going to develop, strength. And move into the south bay and the trivalley. This is around 2 00 in the afternoon. Still dealing with pretty decent rainfall amounts. Towards the evening after about 5 00, i do think things will start to dry out. Then tonight, we get recharged, the core of area of low pressure moves overhead. So by 5 00 in the morning tomorrow, through 10 00, were going to be dealing with pretty heavy rain. And even the potential for some thunderstorms. And then by tomorrow afternoon, we do start to clear out. Were going to get two waves of showers, the first today, the second tomorrow morning. Your microclimate forecast for today does bring san jose back up to 64. Again, showers expected around lunchtime. San mateo, 63. Ocean beach, sole ma, low 60s for San Francisco for today and lots of cloud cover. North bay, showers this morning clearing out this afternoon. 64 for santa rosa. The trivalley will see the thunderstorm activity around this afternoon. And then again as i mentioned tomorrow morning. Look at these amounts of rain. Were talking some decent amounts, finally getting some good stuff. Up to a half inch expected for the south bay, the peninsula, even for San Francisco and we may actually get more than that across some of the east bay valleys and foothills. Were expecting maybe three quarters of an inch. Overall, it looks like the chance of rain sticks today and tomorrow. Last time we had this amount of rain was just a week ago when the valley floor actually had about one inch of rain. The storm system not going to be as powerful but definitely youre going to note us it wiic. More sierra snow. Talking three to six inches of snow for lake level. Then above 7,000 feet. Winter weather advisory in effect. Theyre talking about 6 to 12 inches of new snow. Yes, above 7,000 feet. So great news, all in all, rain and thunder moves out by tuesday. But in the meantime, keep those umbrellas handy. Its going to be cool even at the coastline.
