Do you guys play poker . We did. But we will begin with todays top story. Here we go again, the historic deep freeze, a new blast of brutal cold is descending on much of the country today. And this one could produce some of the lowest temperatures of the year so far. Nbc cease dylan dreyer is up in boston this morning. Good morning to you. Reporter good morning, savannah. 2014 hasnt been off to the best start. We have seen unrelenting, almost unusual cold from areas like fargo all the way down to florida. Now, theres still two months left of winter. And with another polar plunge already moving in, so many people have already had enough. Reporter muscle and machinery, both tested in a month of snowstorms and freezing weather. In chicago, dangerous cold forcing officials to close Public Schools this morning. Forecasters say it could feel like 40 below with the windchill. Heavy gusts had visibility near zero in the dakotas on sunday leading police to close some major highways. Icy roads have been a problem as far south as texas. The prolonged cold has led to a shortage of propane gas leading 24 states to declare Energy Emergencies while in florida, worried farmers have been using frost blankets to protect their crops. There has been some fun in the frigid conditions. Some people shooting boiling water from water guns only to watch it turn into frozen mist. And as players arrived in new jersey ahead of the super bowl next sunday, a question a lot of sports fans are asking, will the weather affect the big game . The leagues play only calls for a change if local and state officials said it wasnt safe for people to travel to the game. We would all love to play in 70degree weather. But if you tell me its going to be 20 degrees and ive got to play in the super bowl, i dont think theres one guy that will shy away from it. Reporter now, the game is going to be played on sunday, february 2nd, thats groundhogs day, which al, as youve mentioned is a story in and of itself. But itll be interesting to see if a new month will bring in, finally, a new weather pattern. Looks like we will see that. Thanks so much. But lets talk about this brutal cold air. Another piece of the polar vortex pushing down and bringing that cold air from the dakotas all the way down into florida, which is going to set up for a big winter storm. Well tell you about that. Look at this right now. Feels like 14 below in minneapolis, 15 in chicago and cleveland, 13 in cincinnati, and these temperatures, its nice and warm, actually, in the northeast. Washington, 40, 31 in boston, but thats going to be changing. Look at the temperatures as they start to drop during the day today. Falling down, gets up to about 42 in boston and then starts falling. Chicago, 6 below, 10 in omaha, and overnight tonight, we continue to watch the mercury fall. By early tomorrow morning, chicago will be 16 below, 17 below in marquette, 24 in charlotte. And then look at this, that cold air sets up, and weve got along this front, were going to be looking at a low pressure developing. So from houston all the way to the carolinas, weve got winter storm warnings, Winter Weather watches. You can see an icy mix from houston all the way to the southeast. Snow to the north of that. And look at what were talking about. Ice, we are looking at up to 1 2 inch of ice developing through the carolinas, and thats going to be brutally, its going to be really crippling, and snowfall by wednesday morning. Were talking carolinas up to a foot and a half of snow. And that is going to be big problems for the southeast. We are talking about school closings, power outages, a real mess for the southeast through wednesday morning. All right. Were going to check with you in a couple of minutes. Thank you very much. Were going to talk now with new developments on that nasty virus that swept through a Royal Caribbean cruise ship. Its now hit the passengers and crew aboard that ship. So the cruise is being cut short. Nbcs Kerry Sanders is at the port of miami. Good morning. Reporter well, good morning, matt. The explorer of the seas cruise ship is heading north out of the caribbean. Because so many people have gotten sick on the ship, the captain has set a straight course to the United States bypassing a stop in st. Maarten. Reporter it was supposed to be a tenday vacation through the caribbean. Instead, a highly contagious virus struck 600 passengers and crew, causing vomiting and diarrhea. It was a terrible experience. Reporter a team of experts for the center of Disease Control boarded at st. Thomas, they say it is too early to suspect a cues, but doctors on board suspect the common neurovirus. They arent sure who to blame. I dont blame the ship, i dont blame Royal Caribbean, i blame passengers who came on with it. Frankly, i dont blame them either because if i was sick and paid for my cruise, id want to go on it, too. Reporter the ship bypassed the first scheduled stop to haiti and headed directly to puerto rico where it was sanitized in an effort to kill the virus. Something cruise ship medical teams have learned in the past is no easy feat. Well, the neurovirus can be transmitted readily from person to person. So it can among this confined population spread fast. Reporter Royal Caribbean has apologized to the passengers because this cruise that began in cape liberty, new jersey, has been cut short by two days now. Royal caribbean will compensate the passengers onboard. Savannah. Kerry sanders, thank you so much. And now to russia where overnight security concerns forced the organizers of the Olympic Torch Relay to reroute the flames path. Lets get to Nbcs Richard Engel in russias dangerous dagestan region. Richard, good morning to you. Reporter good morning, savannah. For days, weve been talking about the Terror Threat to the games. Well, the threat comes from here, from dagestan and other parts of the north caucuses. And today, the olympic flame passed through. Reporter the olympic torch made the most dangerous stop today, to the russian republic of dagestan. But threats of terrorism dramatically curtailed the traditional relay. So organizers invited a few thousand spectators to a soccer stadium to watch the torch do laps around the field, a contained event, under heavy guard. A torch relay to nowhere. Islamic militants from dagestan have repeatedly threatened the torch, the Olympic Games and foreign tourists. For the militants, the attention the olympics bring is a chance to publicly and painfully strike back at russia for its commando operations. Like this one just over a week ago. When police and special forces assaulted a suspected Islamic Militant hideout in the capital. Police say seven suspected terrorists were killed in this house. And there are raids like this one almost every day in dagestan. This is russias secret war that extremists say they want to bring to sochi. A neighbor showed us where 1 2 dozen Russian Troops took position in the house. The floor is covered in bullet casings and fired out the window. Dagestan is a war zone that would normally have nothing to do with the olympics but suddenly does because russias the host and theyre being held nearby. On the weekend talk shows, questions were raised about the safety of american athletes. I cannot give them 100 guarantee. The fact is, these are going to be very much threatened olympics. Reporter today the russian intelligence says it does not believe a female suicide bomber has made her way into sochi as police had previously warned. Savannah. Richard engel, thank you. Lets turn to anita defrantz. Shes a member of the International Olympic committee, a former olympian herself from the 1976 u. S. Rowing team. Good morning. Good to see you. Thank you. I was struck by what the Homeland Security chief said over the weekend. The Security Threat to this particular olympics is the greatest hes ever seen. Are you confident in the russians ability to pull this off at the olympics . Yes, because its not only the russians, its the whole world that secures the games. The u. S. Is involved in making sure our team and other athletes are secure. Its something that belongs to the world. And theyve been working on this for seven years. You have been a member of the International Olympic committee for, i guess, almost three decades. Have you ever seen a response in terms of security like youre seeing with what the russians are doing to secure these olympic venues . I think each time theres a new challenge, and were meeting the challenge. The athletes are the ones who we need to focus on and make sure theyre our responsibility. And i believe they will be safe. Theyll have their chance to meet their test of history in these games. Have you seen a dropoff in the number of americans who are planning to attend in light of all the headlines of security concerns . Im not sure about that. Im going. And maybe its better for nbc if theyre watching it from home. But i dont worry about these games. I think that the athletes who are the central focus of the game will have their chance for history. And the spectators will be safe. Its something that we ought to work on. The u. S. Team has been advised on what to do and how to stay safe. And thats what matters. I guess the flip side of this whole discussion is how do you secure the games and still keep that olympic feeling that feeling of comradery and joy and festivity . Do you think the russians will be able to do that . I think so. I competed in 76, which was immediately after munich, which of course, changed everything. They only had four years to prepare for security there. And we saw the barbed wire on the fences and members of the armed forces, and we were upset we couldnt trade anything with them. The Olympic Games, the athletes have prepared for years. And this is their chance. For me, the most exciting thing is when i get to present medals to them. And every once in a while, therell be an athlete that 3 c1 started a program that the l. A. 84 foundation to help get them on their way and look them in the eye and say for now and forever you are first an olympic champion. Well, there are so many moments that send a chill up your spine because theyre so exciting. Theres also new events this year. Snowboard slope style events. Is this an effort to update the Olympic Games and get them ready for the next generation . Certainly. We heard from the younger folks. We care about what the athletes have to say. We have athletes who competed in the 2010 ioc members, so we want to be relevant to those who are competing and doing their best to say we want to be the best in the world. A gunman opened fire inside a mall near baltimore saturday killing two skate shop workers. Police say the shooter 19yearold darion marcus aguilar. A woman who identified herself as his mother told reporters over the phone there were now clues. Never been interested in guns, never been interested in anything like that. I dont know what happened. Well, investigators have not been able to find any link between aguilar and the victims. They did find a journal and say he expressed general unhappiness with his life. President obamas putting the final touches on tomorrows state of the union address. And minutes ago, we learned which special guests are invited to sit with the first Lady Michelle obama. And they include Boston Marathon bomb survivors carlos and jeff who will be remembered for this image in the moments after the bombings. Trey radell who was charged with buying cocaine has plead one count to cocaine possession. He pledged to a year absence, but authorities requested he step down. And then frightening moments when an australian woman jumped on the train. She gets up and walked up to the Freight Train and jumps. She slips between two cars. It is hard to tell what happened to the woman until the train passes. Then you can see her lying motionless on the tracks. Amazingly, you see her there, she got up, shes expected to be okay. Wait, wait, wait. Go back. Is that guy on the platform shooting video of her and not jumping down to help her . Someone was shooting because we have the Surveillance Video. A 19yearold who went to school in the bay area facing charges of possessing a weapon of mass destruction, vladislav miftakhov, a russian citizen, graduated from Carlmont High School last year and attends penn state. Police say when officers went to his apartment in pennsylvania on friday they found a home made bomb with an exposed fuse and other bomb making chemicals. Vladislav miftakhov reportedly told an officer he was going to, quote, blow things up. Vladislav miftakhov reportedly told investigators he experimented with explosives in california. No effort at all. I mean, this time i was asked. The last time, i was told this is whats happening. If he wasnt here, would i still be here . Probably another year or so. How do you describe the job . Exciting, fun. I think its the greatest job in show business. The only job i ever wanted. Are you ready to hand over the keys . Yeah. Of course, of course. Please, no problem. Tonight tonight who cares who hosts tonight what do you think this relationships like . Its a professional relationship. I really admire him as a comic. I remember the first time i saw, i think it was neil young, and i thought it was good lipsynching. It was really him, he captured the essence of the guy. And thats what comedy is. I admire his professionalism and his ability to do comedy. Its really good. That was nice. No pressure. Top that. Gosh. I mean, obviously i look up to jay. And so we talk every couple of weeks or Something Like that. And i just love his attention to detail and how he roots for me all throughout late night. Hell give advice if i ask advice. And hell say i saw that one piece, it was great. Do you expect to be welcomed into some kind of fraternity, or do you think the competition will be intense with the other guys . I think for me, theres never anything tense. Excuse me, im sorry. Get jay more water. A different type of water. He doesnt think theres going to be anything tense. Ridiculous. Really . I mean, maybe i have a lot to learn. Heres johnny my carson was carson because thats how old i am. And his carson was carson. Was he your carson . My carson was carson daly. And here he is jimmy fallon i think hes probably the closest to johnny of anybody else in late night. You know, a duet with Justin Timberlake or something, i cant do that. I write jokes. Yeah, i think i try to mix everything ive ever learned ever into the show whenever i can because i was just trying to keep people watching and keeping the show alive. You think youll miss the show . Oh, of course ill miss the show. Everybody saying, are you going to do another late night show . No, im not. A month after, you pick up the trade, leno back to late night tv. As a standup comedian, you know the stories of jay leno and how hes one of the best comedians out there. And i think, honestly, i think hes going to youre going to love this. He loves doing standup. You think this is going to be different on the day you go from your show to this show . Do you expect a major change in your life . Or is it just going to be a different time slot . I dont know what to expect. I dont know. If its going to be any different or what. Im loving it, my job at 12 30, 7 00 or whenever they air. And i go, its great, no one bothers me, im on, doing our show. Its almost like no one knows im doing it. Its great. Im very happy with this. And he says, enjoy it, buddy. And youre doing a good job. And with this one, i feel like theres more eyeballs. Sometimes when kids go off to college or summer camp, their dad or their mom will write them a note and theyll stick it in the suitcase so they find it when they get where theyre going. When we opened up the web page on instagram, we opened up pandoras box. Reporter the parents of one High School Sophomore are taking their stance against cyberbullying to the texas legal system. They are filing a lawsuit this week against six of their daughters classmates as well as their parents. Alleging those minors created an Instagram Page intended to humiliate numerous fellow classmates. There was a picture of her and all of these vulgar postings of her underneath the photograph. When you start putting sexually explicit terms to a 16yearold by girls because their boyfriends are egging them on, or theyre egging each other on, thats ridiculous. Reporter while some pictures on the account were normal photos taken from the pages of the victims, the page also featured explicit photos of some other minors. Some of them were topless photos of females, bottomless photos of males. The page was attracted nearly 900 followers during the several weeks it was up was shut down last week after they filed a restraining order. But their Attorney Says the pending lawsuit is about setting a precedent of prevention. The idea here is not any profit for this family. The idea is just to make sure everything stops. And while none of the defendants families would comment to nbc, legal experts believe cases like this sends a message to parents and students. The idea they have to defend a lawsuit in court, i foresee it getting settled pretty quickly. But i also foresee the lawsuit being used as a mechanism and a vehicle to stop the conduct. How many children is going to take to commit suicide to kill themselves, to hurt themselves because of bullies out there and the parents that dont want to take responsibility. Which is good, but were going to cover all the basic categories. Youve got to eat less and move a little more. If you find a book that speaks to you, youre more likely to stick with it. Lets do step by step. These are people who want to know, tell me everything i have to eat and im going to stick to it by the book, so to speak. A plan that tells you heres what you need to do every day. We look at the every other day diet. Thats our first one. Its alternating days you eat 500 calories and go to about 1,600 calories. If that doesnt sound good to you, that doesnt sound like a lot. Its basically a meal a day and fruits and vegetables. But one way to do it. It alternates every other day. Perfectly safe. And everything were doing is no quick fixes and sound science. Now, no guarantees youre going to look like the cover of this book, but gives you an eating plan, six days of good structure and one where you have a little extra. Fitness from managing stress, a little bit of everything, ways to keep track of things. All in one volume if thats for you. And then we have one, one, one. One carbohydrate, one fat, and one protein at each meal. But you have lists of what counts as one. I was going to say, pasta, ice cream. Second category is the fitness category. I came on the first day and the last. And then i felt i really needed to get out of the way. But, yes, i take credit for the pie that youre going to see up in that scene. Well get to that in a second. The story line does ask the viewers, the readers in the first case, now the viewers, to take a little bit of a leap of faith that this woman, this single mom could fall for this guy who is how couldnt she fall for josh brolin . Not josh brolin, a guy that escaped from prison. Thats right. You said something, you said i dont write stories about what happened. I write stories about what could happen. What could happen. And i think thats what we all want a little bit from a book and certainly from a movie is to be taken on a journey that maybe we havent taken in our lives. But not a complete fantasy. This isnt a fairy tale. But it is a love story. Full out, fullon, its the love story i wanted to read, i wanted to watch for people with miles on them who maybe are never going to have josh brolin show up in their kitchen. I like when you say people with miles on them. To understand how this could happen, you have to understand her character. And you said recently, you said, for her, the good guys have turned out bad. So why not turn the world upsidedown and think maybe a bad guy could turn out good . Hes a man these are both people who have had hard knocks, big losses. And they the world didnt go the way it was supposed to for them. And theyre each in their own way a prisoner. She in her house and he was a prisoner in prison. And they find each other. And i should say they find each other in the context of her family life with her son, the story is told through the eyes of her 13yearold. Which raises the question, that leap of faith. Also, a lot of people say, youre going to tell me a single mom would allow an exconvict to come into the house with her son . Im going to dare you. Go to this movie and see if you wouldnt buy it. You know, its not this woman actually is proven right in many ways. She follows her instinct. And shes not without fear. Im not going to give away what happens. This is a scary situation. These are air temperatures, not windchills. And look at this, from houston all the way to the carolinas, were talking a southern storm. That cold air gets itself together, starts with ice from houston and Central Texas all the way into the carolinas. North of that, were talking a decent amount of snow. Look at the ice amounts we are looking at here in the southeast. We are talking about some areas picking up 1 2 inch of ice. That can be devastating. And snowfall amounts, look at this, from north of new orleans up into norfolk, were talking about 3 to 4 inches of snow, but look at this from the outer banks all the way into central south carolina, up to a foot and a half for areas that dont have snow removal equipment, this could be big trouble into wednesda 9 12 on a backtowork monday. Temperatures are climbing nicism we started out pretty mild because we had a blanket of low clouds overhead. They will be burning off soon. How can you do that in your own life . We ask that question recently of outside magazine. Here with some of the answers is a former olympic swimmer turned Research Assistant in psychiatry at uc san diego. And psychiatrist janet taylor. You might end up working together. Yeah. So you actually experienced this in beijing. You were an olympic swimmer. And things didnt go well. What happened . So what happened was going into that last turn in my final race of 200 freestyle, my feet barely touched the wall. So i lost all that momentum and speed carrying into the last lap, which is a swimmers biggest fear, you dont want that to happen in an olympic race. You could have collapsed, but you end up taking silver. True. I kept going and i didnt let it get to me. I think as an athlete, ive had that privilege of being exposed to challenges, and, you know, really getting after it no matter what. So all of that helped me deal with that situation. And i carried on. You talked there a lot about Brain Training techniques. You say marines and adventurers anticipate and react to stress better than the rest of us. What is it about them that make them better at it . True. Research has shown that very resilient people, such as navy s. E. S. E. A. Ls and marines and athletes work well under stress. Their brain activation is much lower, specifically in those areas that regulate emotions and that body awareness. Meaning that theyre staying calm under the stresses. Whereas lowresilient people, their brain activity is super high and, you know, that hyper activity can lead to panic. Obviously we can all benefit if we all do this. Are we all capable of Brain Training . Absolutely. If you think about it, our brains are the same, its just how weve learned to train them. We think we can build our bodies, we can also build our brains. We know life is stressful. But if you do the technique where you focus on the sensation. If you notice youre anxious, which whatever sensation you have in your stomach and your hands, you can practice in training yourself to say, okay, i got this, or im going to panic. And what olympic athletes do, is they dont panic, they know im ready and stay focused on the prize. And people at home can do this. How do you prepare yourself for the unexpected, basically . Well, you anticipate but dont overreact. Lets say youre a mom and worried about your kid falling, doing things like that, you prepare yourself. Strap them in their car seat. If theyre in a highchair, you have your phone charged to call 911, train yourself in cpr. So if the unexpected happens, you can go into automatic mode instead of waiting and panicking. What would you say to someone about to make a presentation at work. Theyve got anxiety. What can the everyday person do right now . I think that positive mindset and selfbelief youve got it really helps. As an athlete going into every practice, every meet im swimming, i have to know ive put in the effort, im prepared, i got it. And that positive selftalk, i can do this. And you embrace the anxiety. Sometimes what feels like nervousness and anxiousness is, in fact, excitement. If you know youre ready for the presentation, take some deep breaths, be mindful about it and go out and do it. And it takes practice. I love the notion of hyping yourself up. We see athletes, boxers when they enter the race, a song, they have their earphones on. It is psyching yourself out in a sense. It is. Its using your brain the way it should be. What they dont say is if he reportedly told an officer hes actually going to blow things up, but didnt get specific. You have a fabulous, southwest flavored chicken soup, you have your vegetables, i like to serve it over rice. Thats your first meal. Meal number one. From that, you take chicken out and you shred it up and toss it with salsa. Okay. And you make these fabulous tacos. And my family loves taco night. Put avocado and shredded lettuce. We had taco night two nights ago. Meal number three . Meal number three. Now pulling some more chicken. Theres enough chicken in there to do all of this for the week. Mix it with a little bit of sauce and hot sauce, and make these pulled chicken sandwiches, whole grain bun, this is a healthier slaw, as well. And this is a salad, a radish and avocado and orange salad. Taking advantage of local produce, seasonal produce. And chicken that you originally started with in the crock pot. And its all enough in that original crock pot dish to slice up some at the end. This is all like sort of and a salad. And this is from weeknight wonders. Its really fast. And lastly, the last meal. Now the chickens done. Weve used all the chicken but still left with this fabulous mixture of vegetables and tomatoes in this wonderful sauce. And the days its been in there, its getting more tasty. Mix it with some chicken broth, a can of beans for protein and you have this great tortilla soup. Incredible. And this is so yummy. This is maybe one of my favorite meals of the week to be honest. On saturday night, police say a man rode his bike behind each of his victims and touched them inappropriately. The teenage girl who was hit and killed by a vta train will be laid to rest today. 14yearold Danica Garcia was riding her bike to choir practice at Delmar High School earlier this month when she was hit. You happen to be the blessed person that spends a few days there, you just i was going to fly back to jfk and pick up my husband and my dog and i looked at the weather and said, see you in miami. I actually kind of like what the sheer panel did to her frame, bought she has great strong shoulders, but without the wide set straps, it pulled her together. Would you do that or skin tone . You could do a lot, lace, you could do black. A great piece of jewelry to pull it over and tie it up. A lot of things. This is for someone who would want to try Something Like that and be more modest. What about galore yeah estefan . She is the nicest woman and most beautiful inside and out. I loved what she wore, but i did want to see this seam you see in the sleeve sort of i wanted to see it across there. Makes it a little maternal, doesnt it . A little bit. And her hair. And, you know, i really cant look at the difference.
