mcdonald's, supporting athletes on their journeys toward olympic gold. the americans continue to lead in both overall and gold medals. meanwhile, jamaica won its first two rio golds last night and tonight with elaine thompson and usain bolt claiming the titles of world's fastest woman and man. and south africa won its first gold tonight with wayde van niekerk's world record performance in the 400 meters. it was also a tremendous sunday for great britain today. five golds and three silvers across gymnastics, sailing, cycling, and tennis with andy murray winning a second straight singles title. and there was goal from justin rose in golf's return. and we'll leave you tonight with the first olympic golf medal ceremony since one was presumably held at glen oak hill country club in st. louis back in 1904. 112 years later it was time to cue up "god save the queen." justin rose with the gold. sweden's henrik stenson wins silver. and america's matt kuchar wins bronze. ♪ ♪ ♪ >> so that'll do it for us. ryan seacrest coming up in late night. and tomorrow on the "today" show two of the biggest american stars in rio, michael phelps and katie ledecky will join matt and hoda live on copacabana beach. for now, good night from rio. ♪ homes destroyed, businesses i'm all done crying. i'm all done being upset and done with it. >> homes destroyed. businesses wiped away completely and lives upended. a wildfire is rave judging communities in lake county. the battlefield is far from over. the news starts right now. good evening to you thank you for joining us for this special edition of nbc bay area news. i'm peggy bunker. >> the clayton fire is tearing through the town as we speak. >> let's take a look at the communities affected so far. the hardest hit would be lower lake. that's where historic businesses have been reduced to ash as well as many homes. many of them burned completely through. the community of clear lake is also threatened tonight. this last update says 3,000 acres have been burned but fire officials say that is conservative at this time. 6,000 people are gone, evacuated out of their home. several local strike teams are on the fire lines to battle the flames. >> we start with christie smith live in lower lake. you can still see the flames, christie? >> reporter: that's right. we are near downtown lower lake. main street is just up from where we're standing. but tfirefighters the are still out and about and you can see this is one of the businesses on main street. not much left. there is a truck destroyed here. and on the corner you see things like this. down the street there is a power pole that is knocked down so you can't get by. but fortunately, the power is up. they're not live wires. and you cross the street and see things like this. for people who have seen fires nearby now they're forced to get out. rolling flames tore through neighborhoods in lower lake. downtown businesses and homes destroyed. >> i was here when i seen the flames coming. they was right here. they just come so fast. >> reporter: leo evacuated but came back. he sprayed water on his home and his neighbor's home hoping they won't burn. >> where i'm going to live? i know it can be built again. >> reporter: the clayton fire began yesterday. the firefighters said the situation seemed to be improving but late this afternoon high winds and high temperatures and spot fires. >> it was burning in all directions. it looked like it had multiple heads and we had resources all over lower lake and clear lake. >> lake county is trying to recover from many fires. >> we'll stay here. we'll make up our beds. >> reporter: marie johnston grabbed her dogs and left her home. last she heard it was still standing. it has been a heart breaking experience but she has to carry on. >> i'm all done crying and i'm all done being upset. i'm all done with it. now it's just going to be strong and keep going. >> reporter: and we're back here live. we're on main street in lower lake. it's just emergency vehicles. not a lot of flames. they have been work very hard. not all the businesses have been destroyed, just some. you can still see from main street active fires. firefighters are still working very hard out here. i got an update from cal fire. and there will be a town hall meeting tomorrow night. but they are still trying to find an exact location. tough to see the flames right there behind you. so close. thank you so much. excellent reporting there. unclear how many homes have been destroyed. you saw the homes and flames gutted by the wildfire. at least ten are gone for certain at this point but that number is expected to drive dramatically. and we are seeing fires on structures like this one from our chopper. we have seen homes on fire or burned to the ground completely. it is devastation as far as the eye can see. this is from last year as well. so near to this fire now. for a better picture of what it is like for firefighters on the ground, this is from the baa pal onchief posted to twitter by cal fire. the clayton fire is burning near several large wildfires we were seeing last year. you can see how close the fire is to the valley fire. that was the third most destructive fire in california state history. the clayton fire putting up an incredible amount of smoke. anthony slaughter has that part of the story. [ inaudible ] over the past 24 hours. the temperatures are comfortable. but earlier in the afternoon we had high temperatures near 95 degrees and wind gusts up to 25 miles an hour from 1:00 this afternoon through 6:00 this evening and the winds started to die down. here's the futurecast. winds out of the southwest. that's going to blow the smoke into the central valley in places like chico. tomorrow morning you'll notice areas of morning fog. but the winds will be wrapping around an area of low pressure blowing off to the north and west. not looking at a huge impact from the smoke but the air quality will be moderate in the north bay and we have smoke for at least the next 24 hours. several strike teams from the bay area have been deployed to fight the clayton fire including san francisco firefighters. when the call came for help the fire department rushed to respond with five engines leading the group. a firefighter was in the same area last year fighting the rocky fire. >> we are prepared to do whatever the incident would like us to do. we will assist in any form they need us. >> marin county fire has sent 14 engines and 23 personnel to the fire. alameda county fire has sent strike teams as well. the coverage continues on the digital platforms and we'll have live coverage tomorrow morning starting at 4:30 on today in the bay. and now taking you to rio where team awe is racking up the medals here. taking you to the olympic flame. bay area athletes are really doing an incredible job. we have team coverage of the summer olympics for you. jessica aguirre joining us from rio. but first marianne favro walking us through the memorable moments. a big day for gymnastics. >> it was the highlights include the world's top gymnast, a world's fastest man and a bay area native one step closer to winning her fourth gold medal. >> a day of history making competition with simone biles vaulting her way to another gold medal. >> this is the first time an american woman wins a gold medal in vault. >> reporter: she is also the first u.s. female gymnast to win three golds in one olympics. usain bolt proved once again he is the fastest man in the world winning the 100-meter dash in seemingly easy fashion. his third straight olympic gold medal in the event. >> i knew i would have won. i could tell i felt good. i felt smooth. i knew justin gat would get excited about it. all i had to the is stay cool. >> reporter: justin gatlin took home the silver an serving a controversial four-year doping suspension. and kerri walsh jennings is one step closer to gold. she and april ross defeated australia in the quarterfinal. they will face brazil in the semifinals on tuesday. marianne favro, nbc bay area news. beach volleyball has famous fans tonight. that is kevin durant with draymond green. there he is. he's got the flag. they cheered on kerri walsh jennings and april ross. draymond hiding behind the flag. local swimmers have made history and stolen the spotlight with several dominant performances. >> jessica aguirre caught up with two bay area swimmers with a unique place in history. >> nathan adrian and ryan murphy have a haul of medals and they helped michael phelps go out in a golden way. >> nathan adrian has new hardware heading home with him. >> they get bigger every time. carrying four around your neck it is heavy but i love it. >> the three-time olympian added four medals to liz collection for a total of eight but it's they are particularly moving for the dominant team usa showed in the pool. >> we proved we are on top of the swimming world still. just looking across the board. >> reporter: and for the significance of the 4x100 medley for michael phelps and for ryan murphy. adrian feels the pressure to bring it to the wall. >> makes it more special. ryan murphy, i train with him. watching him accomplish his goal. and then michael, i get to take credit for a small part of his last race. >> also part of that win, carrying around a trio of golden treasure. he took the 100-meter and 200-meter backstroke race. he set the goal when he was 8. >> i have no recollection of ever making that book. to see it now and realize how far i've come. if i could talk to my 8-year-old self and say just keep at it, it's all going to work out in the end. >> he says what he takes away from rio is not just medals but memories. >> my biggest memories are coming to the village. >> what is next for the cal guy? a little bit of a break but it's back to the pool, back to training and getting ready for tokyo 2020. a dangerous situation in rio after several team usa swimmers including ryan lochte were robbed at gunpoint last night. billy bush spoke with lochte about the incident. >> a guy pulled out his gun and cocked it and put it to my forehead. i put my hands up like whatever. >> the men took off with cash and lochte's wallet. the team was not injured. you can watch the interview on "today." jessica aguirre will be back in just a few hours starting at 5:00 a.m. for today on the bay. she doesn't get to sleep much. that's the trade off. a serious scare at jfk international airport tonight. panicked travellers ran through the airport after reports of gunshots in one of the terminals. a few hours ago police gave the all clear. saying there was no threat. some flights were cancelled. court workers will go back to work tomorrow. a big psi of relief for people wanting their issues handled in the courtroom. normal court operations will resume tomorrow morning but it will take workers a few days to clear the backlog from the eight-days strike. >> the chemicals can be way toxic. >> would you want to live near a fracking site? we expose california's favorable to regulation and monitor this tree. we uncover end that many fracking sites are kept from the public. >> thousands water rescues in louisiana. watch a man pull one woman out alive after her car goes under water. but that hero whunt done yet. >> we're watching fog roll in ahead of the next change in weather. we're back the full forecast coming up after this. you're watching video of the coast guard saving people stra b rescue after rescue. you're watching video of the coast guard saving people stranded by devastating flooding in baton rouge. since the flooding started there have been more than 7,000 rescues. tonight, louisiana is in a state of emergency. at least four people are dead. hundreds of homes are ruined and thousands of people have been evacuated. you see some of them right there. the flooding is so bad it is called unprecedented. earlier this evening president obama signed a disaster declaration. but stories of survival are starting to emerge including an incredible rescue pulled off by good snare tans. >> get out. give me a knife. >> oh, my god, i'm drowning. oh, my god. oh, my god. get my dog! get my [ muted ] dog now. >> here. i can't get the dog. i think she's gone. >> she better not be. i lost the dog. >> that is an amazing story you saw right there. the danger is not over yet. the louisiana governor warned the flood waters are expected to rise in many areas. >> she didn't want to leave without the dog. good to see that. nbc bay area investigation found out when it comes to the practice of fracking the public is still kept in the dark. >> steven stock broke the story about fracking in california four years ago. >> fracking is the controversial practice of splitting rocks deep under ground with high pressure water mixed with chemicals to release natural gas or oil. it has raced serious health and environmental concerns incoming fears it could contaminate drinking water. after our series of reports four years ago state law was changed to regulate fracking in southern california. but the state is not always following its own law. in the shadow of a.m. thomas middle school, oil rigs can be seen working the underground deposits not far from the school. across the highway is lost hills. but there is more going on here than meets the eye. our investigation discovered that this well and dozens more like them nearby have been fracked in recent months. state law requires that doggr inform the public about and wells are being fracked within 60 days of the operation but that is not always happening. nothing was posted about the fracking going on at this well or 172 others like it in the area long past the deadline set by state law. >> a lot of people don't know or understand what it does to the ground. >> reporter: estella lives within sight of the wells where the fracking has been going on. >> a lot of us don't understand what fracking is. >> it's really important that fracking activities are disclosed. >> clare is an environmental lawyer. >> if those activities aren't disclosed the public is denied information about the chemicals. >> and we don't know if there is fracking going on if i live in that community. >> absolutely. if it's not on the website you just don't know. >> reporter: this issue has been tracked for last six months. comparing the oil company website with the state doggr website. we verified their findings and consistently found between 130 and 175 wells reported fracked by the oil industry did not show up on the state doggr website within 60 days as required by law known as sb4. >> our focus is an industry funded database. it is a government funded database publicly transparent. we verify it. >> even so, are some of these wells not making it under the 60 day deadline. >> some aren't doing it because they are having trouble with the reporting mechanism. >> a mechanism that she says is new to regulators and to oil company officials who must fill out forms and go through processes never required for them. >> the ewg first exposed the fracking going on in california. >> a lot was thrown at doggr fast. but that's not a great excuse. for decades they had worked one-on-one with oil companies. >> i feel like i have my own reputation there. >> when we found these wells between 130 and 170, does that disappoint you? is it acceptable? they are not being reported? >> it is never acceptable. but it continues to improve. so since you were asking those questions i think they're putting more emphasis on it. >> some companies haven't reported to doggr, as required by law. >> if they do not give us the information, we will find them. >> doggr found 58 violations so far. but even though the new law allows the agency to issue $25,000 in fines, we discovered that so far, doggr has not handed out a single fine. >> the law is the law and affects everybody. >> reporter: when it comes to fracking and her neighborhood, it is critical they are informed in a timely manner. >> inform the public. >> do improvements need to be made? >> absolutely. we want to make improvements. >> reporter: doggr says the law needs more seethe and enforcement power. a new bill is before the state legislature which would give doggr more tools including allowing it to levy bigger fines to regulate fracking in the future. we asked for a comment from the western state petroleum institute but they never got back to us. give us a call if you have a tip for our investigative unit. you can also send us an e-mail. anthony slaughter rear now. we have nice summer time weather coming this way. >> nice today. tomorrow is warmer and really hot on tuesday, wednesday, thursday. summer lives on in the bay area. fog in san francisco right now. there will be cool spots on the coastline but it's even in san francisco this week the temperatures will be heating up into the 70s. san jose right now clear for the most part. 85 degrees today. right where we should be for this time of year. currently, 61 and we'll wake up to a few more morning clouds. temperatures warmer tomorrow and heat up tuesday, wednesday, and thursday with 90s in the forecast. as we head toward the weekend the temperatures cool off a little bit. the fog is starting to push in right now. and looking at mostly cloudy skies across most of the bay. we will stay mostly cloudy until 9:00 in the morning and the fog will peel back to the coastline. the fog will turn back for tomorrow night. here's the micro climate forecast for monday. 87 for san jose. 90 in cupertino. cool in san francisco, up to 66 there. san matteo, 81 tomorrow. oakland, 73. but you get to the inland valleys, walnut creek, 97 tomorrow. and a slew of mid-90s for the tri-valley. the high pressure is driving the winds that are going to shift offshore and we are going to have a trough develop in the upper levels and that will drive the winds offshore and will warm up in a big way. we're talking 97 degrees as we head to the middle part of the upcoming week. the temperatures cool off for friday and next weekend they really start to cool off and the thing you will notice in san francisco the return of 70s. perfect beach weather for the next few days. >> that looks nice. don't give this guy any ideas. thank you so much, anthony, appreciate it. adele at the super bowl?
