Security experts have been warning about the possibility that someone could hack the Voting System for next months election. A possible solution to prevent these hackers. And its being developed in the Silicon Valley. Steven stock has the inside story for us. Steven . Last month, we showed you just how vulnerable some of these current Voting Systems are to hackers. Experts say one way to make sure those systems cannot be hacked in the future is to make the computer code that runs them open source. Available to the public for all to inspect. They date back to the 2000 president ial election in the infamous hanging chad debacle in florida. Voting machines that rely on pc Computer Technology to cast and tally votes. Machines adopted by election supervisors around the country after that mess in florida. Most of those same machines are still in use today. Its well known that the types of Voting Machines we have today are pretty vulnerable. The nonprofit oset institute, dedicated to securing modern day open source Voting Systems. Hes osets chief technology officer. Who knows a thing or two about hacking these antiquated systems. We didnt have the environment we have. Nobody said, oh, by the way, it would be a bad idea to run this super Important Software in a pc that can be hacked the same as your grandmas pc, right . Its a major departure from the private proprietary Voting Systems currently in use around much of the country. About 87 of all Voting Systems are produced and maintained by three private corporations. Critics call them black box systems because the source code is kept private. Open source or glass box systems are more secure and transparent because their computer code can be scrutinized by anyone looking to hack it or to find bugs. Transparency is your friend when it comes to security. Chances are, if youre an Elections Official anywhere in the u. S. , youve heard of brent turner. I refer people to the department of defense and the air force, and they both utilize open Source Systems. Former rock singer has now spent the last decade spreading the gospel of open source Voting Systems. I will not rest until we see the systems deployed nationally. Because all the votes have to count. Everyone agrees, the proprietary private systems used today are at the end of their life span and need to be replaced. When that happens, they hope that open Source Systems will replace them. What happens if we do nothing and stick with what we got . Thats the definition of insani insanity. You will get the same result, which is insecure systems, a lack of voter confidence and more expense than the counties can bear. Both los angeles and San Francisco are the first two california counties to set aside money to develop and try out open Source Systems for use in 2 to 4 years. Its important to have transparency around the Voting System. Chris jordanic is the president of the elections commission. They pay 200,000 a year to license the software from their current source vendor. It could cost half as much as the current vendor system. This seems like a nobrainer, why arent more governments rushing to do this . Thats what were doing today. Were taking a leadership position. Depending on the county in california, youre looking at a system thats 15 years old . Based on 20yearold technology . Or even older. California secretary of state alex padilla wants counties to modernize his accounting systems. His office would approve an open source system. Thats the ultimate transparency and accountability for all. At the end of the day, its essential for each county to make for themselves. All of this will take time and wont be ready for this novembers election. Thats why Cyber Security experts tell us theyre bracing for what may happen this november. Were going to have that now. Well get through it, we dont need every other election to be conducted in that environment of certainty and fear and doubt. We reached out to those three major private vendors that provide Election Services around the country. None of them got back to us to comment. I believed its what was going to heal me. As that wore off. I realized that i didnt feel better. Wilson began telling her story to Prison Inmates as a way to deter them from a life of crime. After hearing their stories of traumatic childhoods. Her view of the Death Penalty changed. Now she speaks out as an advocate for prop 62 which would repeal the Death Penalty.
