Reporter we have learned that the suspect in this case was a student who lived right here on campus. Officials say that student, it all began when that student allegedly began stabbing a fellow classmate in the middle of his morning class. A frightening, frightening morning for everyone here. This is not a press conference. Events like this happen elsewhere but not here. Reporter this morning, the unthinkable did take place at uc merced. A Student Armed with a large huntingstyle knife began stabbing a fellow student in class. They say a construction worker identified as byron price, heard the commotion and walked in. I actually think that he, through his actions, saved this one students life. He was also stabbed in that classroom. Reporter the suspect then ran outside and stabbed another student and a staff member before police shot and killed him. We are fortunate that it was not worse and we thank our Uc Merced Police officers for their quick and her owe i can actions in ending this situation quickly and gaining control of the crime scene. If you were so close to it and knowing that if someone would not have stopped him, he could have come into our classroom. Tonight students are rattled. These women chose to go here because of its quiet and safe reputation. Theyre from east oakland and want d to go to college in a safer community. I was trying to get away from the violence because from oakland is a lot of violence. Here theres not supposed to be much. Reporter again, Officials Say that the suspect was a student who lived here on campus. Theyre in the process of notifying that suspects family. And hoping to release his identity sometime this evening. Again, right now the campus remains on a precautionary lockdown through tomorrow. It will reopen on friday. Theyre still searching for answers this evening in San Franciscos marina district. Two young boys on their way to school hit in the crosswalk and a woman is accused of driving under the influence. Reporter that driver did cooperate with police and was put into the back of a patrol car on scene. Neighbors say its risky even stepping into the crosswalk here where it happened because driefr drivers fly by and there is no stop sign. Now, two students have been hit. The belongings of two boys were scattered in the street. A driver and suv plowed into them in a crosswalk on the way to school, just stepping out in front much a stopped truck. Came just after the accident. And, of course, it made me cry. Pretty sad. Reporter the driver stayed at the scene. Later identified by San Francisco police as a woman booked on suspicion of driving under the influence. Neighbors were horrified. It appears that the suv passed the truck and the struck the boys as they passed in front of the truck. Reporter the boys were taken to the hospital with serious injuries but are expected to survive. It happened at the 6 to late liquor store on monterrey road. The suspect grabbed a bottle of liquor and a small keg of beer and used his gun to demand money. He was last seen running away on foot. Call police if you recognize him. A troubling sign of season within the past few hours weve learned that california had a first flu death and the victim is from the south bay. Chuck coppola joins us live where Health Officials are call this a sobering reminder. Reporter janelle, there could be a worse flu season than last year. There are three strains to contend with instead of two and because the first flurelated fatality comes two months from the first death of last season. The victim who died in Santa Clara County was an adult who came down about the flu in october and suffered from a weakened immune system. We spoke with the Health Department. People who have medical conditions, such as asthma, diabetes, heart disease, they have weakened immune systems, theyre at increased risk of getting the flu. The results of this vote indicate that your office has lost the confidence of the faculty. The csu system is still trying to fully recover from the recession and cant break the bank. They may call a strike as early as the beginning of next semester prompting some students to say that it will leave them in limbo. Its not just about the administrators and the faculty. Some of the wind sheltered interior valleys near napa and sonoma, may see numbers near the freezing mark and patchy frost. 39 for the east bay peninsula at 45 and the south bay at 42 degrees. Not only the cold weather, but we still have the possibility of rainfall coming our way. We have a storm system off to the north tomorrow. Does not look like any rainfall for us. High clouds from this. Storm system out in the gulf of alaska bringing us the possibility of rainfall in the next four days. Lets detail that in the forecast.
