Lose gatos, 2. 64. We picked up in 18 hours what we couldnt get in about eight months here. So very heavy rain in a short amount of time that led to several storm reports including numerous flood reports down throughout the Santa Clara Valley. Thats where we bring in anthony slaughter and anthony, we hear it rose quickly this morning. Reporter yeah, in fact, this Guadalupe River behind me, it actually rose the height of me. Six feet. This thing behind me actually spilled in over the banks, and you can see right here on the concrete, we got lots of mud hanging out on the ground, and thats because the water came up over the banks and a lot of this mud continues to hang out here on the river right on the banks but the thing about this. Tonight were expecting more rain, as you mentioned, jeff, and with more rain the potential for creeks rising for localized flooding, that exists. So with the mornings rain we had, yeah, a big deal. Now tonight, as you go to bed, things to keep in mind. Were tracking more heavy rain in the forecast and because of that, you want to make sure you take precautions before you head to bed. Were talking about the potential for more localized flooding and the potential for strong winds that could bring power lines down and trees down. Well track it as things progress. For now, looks like the river is holding up but as you heard earlier, it rose to six feet just in 18 hours, which is really remarkable. Jeff, back to you. Thats phenomenal and the danger of flash flooding. There wasnt one part of the state untouched by this storm system. Coming up rob with more perspective on the rainfall we did get, you guys. Thanks, jeff. This was one of the biggest trouble spots in san jose today near anthony. Up. Rain came down so fast the this wasnt just a street overwhelmed by rain. This was the result of crime. Somebody at 4 00 a. M. This morning came out to the pump station behind me and stole the copper wire connected to the pump. By the way, that would be the power source show causing a problem that affects more than just water pumps. This water pump appears to be working just fine. Too bad this isnt the same apparatus supposed to be doing the job this morning inside this pump station. This is one of the many inconveniences caused by copper wire thieves. Reporter bob hawes saws the guadeloupe was like a Swimming Pool and stalling drivers, the result of stolen copper. We inspect the pumps to make sure they are working. Reporter did that not happen . It passed but the thieves did it after inspection. Reporter the problem is not isolated to pumps. Though cale tr stations and tra lights and meters are pray. We had streetlight wire theft throughout the city in the last year and a half. Its an extreme inconvenience. We spent over a Million Dollars in the last couple years replacing wire thats been stoling. Reporter for cal trans its more costly, tens of millions of dollars to replace these broken areas, prompting the question, how to fix the problem. Increasing the security and fencing and dedurants. Reporter your looking at live images of traffic. This is just the standard run of the mill 6 00 thing. We know there are headaches created from these thieveries. You heard, obviously from cal trans talking about the measures they are taking and start collaborating with chp. San jose tells me the city will be bringing enhanced protection, securing Access Points and trying to be more proactive. Right now fixing all the problems in the city will be a backlog of about a year they tell me. Reporting live from downtown, im sam brock, back to you. Thank you, sam. Plenty of problems especially in the wet weather. The live traffic map. A lot of red and yellow throughout this bay area with our commuting issues here. Lets get to the live cameras now. Lets go to 880 in fremont. Sluggish and average speed 30 to 40 Miles Per Hour. The headlights coming towards us is south. Up further, 880 in oakland sluggish. Still moving but it is slow. In fact, at some point today, chp officers say they were stretched to the limit at several points today just trying to keep up with the calls. Kimberly tere joins us and kimberly, the rain is a headache to get around town but its big business for a lot of people. Reporter thats right and well get into that in a minute, raj. Ill show you the interstate here. As you mentioned, sluggish like most of the loroad ways weve sn and not sluggish on a good day but when it rains, it can quickly go from slow to a standstill. Heavy rain and reduced visibility is being blamed for multiple accidents today including this fatal crash in oakland on highway 24. Once it starts raining, people dont slow down and they start going out of control, and then we have to go help them. Reporter the california Highway Patrol says they were responding to about a dozen calls every 30 minutes during the peak of the storm this morning. And the chp isnt the only agency keeping busy. Gas and go, gas and gas and besides trying to drive in the rain, they realize i dont have tires. Reporter tire shops, collision repair businesses and Tow Truck Companies are seeing double and triple the business they would on a dry day. Very busy. Very busy. Thanks to the rain. Business has been good. Pay attention. They are not paying attention. Reporter while driving in the rain, drivers need to increase following distance and cut down on distractions. Those tips could minimize your chances of needing a tow truck or body shop but more importantly, chp says it could save your life. The chp says if you are in a crash, especially at night or if it was raining, its very important to stay in your car, keep your seat belt on and call from there. Kimberly tere, nbc bay area news. The rain created problems for air travelers. About 100 flights cancelled today at sfo. Passengers faced delays from 45 minutes to four hours and San Francisco wasnt alone. Were seeing a delay at los angeles and a large system up ask down the coast of california. Its affecting the two largest airports in california. Not everyone was slowed down by the storm. In Oakland International airports and san jose did not report any cancellations today. A lot of people were without power. Pg and e was knocked out for thousands. We talked to the Utility Company in the past hour and it tells us the total number of outages is at 500 but at 10 00 this morning, more than 13,000 were without power. About 1,000 of them were in the north bay after a tree fell on a power line. Stay with us, a lot going on. Our weather team will continue to track the rain ex wind and through the weekend and also online nbcbayarea. Com 24 7. Has all this rain made a difference in the drought . Marianne favro gives us an update. A green light for a toll hike on the Golden Gate Bridge. How much it will cost and why bridge Officials Say its a must. Im scott budman where a new center founded by the founders of google has broken ground. A story of job creation, Economic Development and lots of private jets. And do you recognize this woman . She was doing in an up scale neighborhood that has police anxious to track her down. Were back in a moment. The morning room at Valley Medical Center closed for about an hour today because of a that this morning. A man admitted said he was sprayed with a chemical. The hospital isolated him while a hazmat crew investigated. They decided to close the e. R. To any new patients. They never determined what the substance was. The man is in the hospital in fair condition tonight. Following up on a story the chief calls a betrayal of trust. The officers appeared in federal court accused in a federal corporation scandal, falsifying records, distributing controlled shush stances and the acquisitions stemmed from Surveillance Video recorded at a Residential Hotel in the tenderloin district. They claimed it shows a series of raids carried out illegally. We also have new information tonight on the freeway shooting that shut down 580 during rush hour in castro centrally. We showed you these pictures as part of the live breaking coverage. Officers closed westbound 580 for about an hour. Today the chp said they spotted the suspects in the area shortly after the shooting and arrested them. This happened yesterday evening. They are accused of firing five to six shots on the freeway. One car was hit but nobody was hurt. San jose airport is expanding but not for you and me. Some of the richest men in Silicon Valley are funding a new terminal for their private jets. Scott budman is live at the airport and scott, even though we cant fly on the planes, the story does affect us. Reporter it does, janelle. This is admittedly a wing being added to the airport for the convenience of very wealthy people. But with new jobs and new revenue coming to the airport and to the county, its also good for the local economy. With the ceremony Ground Breaking inside, work is beginning outside on an 82 Million Dollar terminal to house private jets owned by the founders of google. The aircraft will be handled by a Company CalledBlue City Holdings taking pains to point out google the company is not involved. We heard this called the google airport that were building. You know, its a private airport for the google. Reporter is it the google airport . No. Reporter googles founders are funding to buy it signing a 50year lease to bring jobs and revenue to san jose. They are going to pay the city 3 million a year for 50 years. Thats 150 million. Second, its 300 construction jobs. Reporter the terminal will be on 29 acres featuring seven hangers, five to be used by googles founders. It will be built on what used to be san jose airports longterm parking lot transforming this into a haven for corporate jets. Being able to respond continuously to corporate and aviation needs, it really makes a difference to companies that they can get out there and respond to issues. A luxury item for the wealthy soon to take off with economic benefits for those of us on the ground, as well. The founders of google store pla planes at move et field. They expect those founders to move those planes here. Scott budman. Thanks, scott. New at 6 00. Fremont police want you to take a good look at this photo. They are working to track down this woman seen in the mission l hills neighborhood this week. Neighbors say she was acting suspicious. Police say shes not associated with any crime but want to know why she was going door to door. She may also casing nearby neighborhoods. Please call police with any information. There are two more cases of the measles in the bay area tonight. The men are relatives of the cal student who we told you about earlier this month. That student was exposed on a trip to the philippines. All three had never been vaccinated. The new cases bring the total number in the bay area to six. From the measles to the flu, the number of deadly flu cases in the state is at the highest in five years. California department of Health Reports there are 302 flurelated deaths this year statewide so far. Last year california had 34 cases. In 2009 the state had 539 cases. Thats when the h1n1 strain first surfaced in the United States and novak seen was available. Here in the bay area, there are 50 deadly cases reported so far. Another system moving through. Lets turn to chief meteorologist jeff ranieri. Were continuing to track this area of low pressure moving closer to the california coastline and the core of the low pressure with the strongest wind and also some instability will be heading towards los angeles and we definitely think well be getting outer bands moving on later on tonight. More coming up, but i want to take a look at the over call accumulated precip from the storm system. This was statewide folks not only from Northern California but all the way down towards los angeles. There wasnt one stop not touched by rainfall and the most remarkable thing is down in the Santa Clara Valley after getting little to nothing, we saw the highest total that ranged from one to three inches. When its in a drought, more perspective what this means for the rainfall season. Jeff, a lot of the totals came down big time overnight as you try to head out the door, this is rewinding the radar. You can see the periods of heavy rain. The moisture came from south to north along with converdictive elements and thunderstorms and dropped rain and in the case of san jose from yesterday to today, nearly an inch of rain. That was a 28 boost to our seasonal rainfall total in just one day. Just shows you how bone dry things have been. So thats good news there. I want to point out the accumulating rainfall. We were looking at this number close to 31 and added 23 billion gallons that makes us 33 of average and as this moisture heads off towards the east, earlier this month and into january, we were 16 of average, now up to 33 but perspective there, were still lurking below the all time 76 to 77 snow pack low. The bottom line, we need more storms like this that hit hard and fill up the reservoirs and add to the snow park from the end of march into april. Thank you. Nice boost for san jose. The 20 something percent uptake is great news. Live Doppler Radar not showing any major rainfall but still tracking a few pockets of light to moderate rain. Thats all we need across 6 80 tonight. Do take it extremely slow. Also, if you have any desire to head up to the sierra, its still snowing and hard at times across highway 50 and interstate 80. Check out the new snow numbers coming in. Our producer david getting these numbers, calling in and you can see here kirkwood with nearly three feet of snow. 34 inches to be exact. Sugar bowl 28 inches, heavenly 20 and north star at 17. Lets take you outside of the sky camera network. Thats great news. Numbers in the hid to mid to up. Down in the south bay right now, this is the only spot continuing to see the consistent showers with rain drops currently on the lens. Gusty with winds out of the east 20 Miles Per Hour and we do expect some wind to continue throughout tomorrows forecast, as well. Speaking of which, lets get a look at tomorrows numbers. You can see temperatures stay on the cooler side, low to mid 60s. Well get sun in here but youll have to wait until after the Morning Hours when we have a linkers chance of showers and the sun will come out. Best chance for morning showers, the south bay. The least chance for any rainfall tomorrow would be the north bay. Thats when the storm will clear out first at this point. As we wind things up with the storm lingering offshore, my highest concern tonight will be the chance here of isolated thunderstorms, winds that still could gust as high as 45 Miles Per Hour and we have a flash Flooding Risk that will be the highest at the coast and the Santa Clara Valley. Well be here tomorrow and have another update in about 20 minutes. Helpful information. Thank you. You mentioned the skiing and snowboarding forecast. Guess what . They are on cloud nine. Well take you to the sierra. Plus, the heavy rain hammering Southern California. How the weather left many in very scary situations, even forcing some out of their home. Walking across the street in walnut creek, the woman was seriously injured this morning. The woman remains in the hospital with leg and head injuries tonight. The bus driver is cooperating with police. Investigators say drugs, alcohol and speed do not appear to have been a factor in the crash. A southbound trip across the Golden Gate Bridge will soon cost you a bit more. Joe shows us how much. Reporter seems like everything is going up, groceries, housing es you can add Golden Gate Bridge tolls to the list. More and more traffic reporter this morning with the looming deficit of 142 million, Golden Gate Bridge directors weighed the first toll hike since 2008. On the table, a plan to raise tolls a buck. Fast track would rise to 6, nonfast track to 7 and would raise to a peak of 7 for fast track, 8 for nonfast track in 2018. We reached the point the driver as the cash cow has reached the level of it has no more left. Reporter this morning a steady stream of drivers spoke out against the increase, some breaking into song. I got ripped off on my way to San Francisco reporter Officials Say the increase is needed to pay for projects and maintenance as well as subsidize the districts bus and ferry service. The tolls are the workhorse of the organization. They do keep 25 of traffic off the Golden Gate Bridge during the morning commute. Go back east and the washington bridge, 13 each way. People seem to be able to handle that. Reporter some like susan think the toll hike will keep plenty of drivers off the bridge. The impact is so people will go into the city less. They wont go in marin county. Its a hard ship. Reporter the new pricing takes effect the 7th. We also learned today that plans for a new suicide barrier on the bridge will be completed in two months, but there is no plan for how to pay for it. The district has a policy that it cant use toll money to pay for those barriers, but some bridge directors want to change the policy. They will meet next month to consider that. The price tag for the barriers, is 66 million. Still ahead, did it happen again . A major retooail there might ha been hacked. A warning from americas president to russia today, also. Im Marianne Favro. C
