a call for peace tonight in oakland after days of political unrest. right now a small group is beginning to gather once again at the plaza in oakland. last night's gatherings were smaller than those seen in the day after the election. some protesters blocked traffic on highway 580 near telegraph avenue. police arrested two people on the highway after they broke through a fence. wednesday's protests, a lot more violent. an estimated 7,000 protesters rallied against the presidential election results. some throwing rocks, bottles, and even fireworks. despite what we're seeing on the streets, the transition in wrae washington appears to be smooth and civil. mike pence will lead donald trump's transition team into the white house. governor pence replaces new jersey governor chris christie. president-elect trump said he wants to lean on pence's experience in washington, according to "the new york times." governor pence served in the house of representatives for ten years becoming the governor of indiana. chris christie will still serve as the vice chair on the transition team, as well as trump's kids and other family members. also, gop chair reince priebus is also reportedly in line to be chief of staff. the president's gatekeeper. >> it should be someone who can speak candidly to the president. you know, speak truth to power. >> donald trump may have run against washington's elite, but he's not consulting them as he's building his administration. one of the few tech industry executives, specifically from the silicon valley, who backed donald trump will be on the transition team. paypal founder and capitalist peter thiel donated more than $1 million to trump's campaign and spoke at the republican national convention. it's not known what role he will play on the transition team. silicon valley ceos felt the need to write memorial oats to their staff after trump's victory. tonight at 6:00, our business and tech reporter scott budman speaks to one of those ceos about what he said in the memorially to his staff and the reaction to the now-viral e-mail. terrifying moments at this building in south san jose. a car veered off the road and crashed into a credit union killing one of the people inside. the bank was actually closed for business, but unfortunately a painting crew was working there today. nbc bay area's robert handa with more on what happened. robert? >> reporter: workers here describe the scene as horrific. we happened to talk to some of the people who were inside at the time, and they were just in a daze and extremely distraught. first there was a crash, and then an even bigger one. police say at 11:46. a, officers responded to -- p.m., officers responded to a call on kurter in avenue where an suv had veered into a building where painting crew was working as part of an overall renovation. the credit unionbots itself was not operating today -- union itself was not plating tode ini of the holiday. one vehicle went careening into the building. >> one person was pronounced dead and the other was taken to the hospital. >> reporter: a spokesperson says it is in the process of gathering information and declined to comment except to say the crew are contractors but emphasized they are like family. sources tell us the other worker suffered contusions and a possible head injury but described the injury as non-life-threatening. >> i was shocked to hear. i was coming to go to the atm and didn't think it had nothing to do with the bank. how ironic and sad that there was people in there the day it was closed. it's too shocking. >> reporter: police say the two drivers involved have been cooperative with the investigation, but no details yet on what caused the initial crash. police had closed the westbound lanes of kurter in aven er ier avenue and then reopened the lanes after removing the suv and the body. live in san jose, robert handa, nbc bay area news. a hazmat scare. paramedics rushed two workers to the hospital at pier 96 around 7:30 this morning. workers were sifting through recyclables when they became overwhelmed by fumes. some say their eyes and skin got itchy. th some say they threw up. hazmat crews evacuated the build be and tested the air twice but couldn't pinpoint what exactly caused the fumes. >> they have deemed this to be natural, normal trash byproducts, anything from household gaproducts to paints. >> the workers are expected to be okay. it's a special day in this country to honor the men and women who served in the armed forces. on this veterans day, president obama led the formal ceremonies. >> present -- >> present -- >> for the last time as president, mr. obama laid the wreath outside the tomb of the unknowns. this was followed by a parade of colors inside the memorial amphitheater. noting that veterans day often follows a hard-fought election, the president urged americans to work together as veterans learn to do. >> we can pay it forward, we can volunteer, we can serve. we can respect one another. we can always get each other's backs. that is what veterans day asks all of us to think about. >> he says part of the healing from this election involves reconnecting with principles that are "more enduring than transitory politics." many veterans in the bay area are struggling to accept their future commander in chief, president-elect trump. we have more on this veterans day. >> reporter: for the most part, the divisiveness we've seen was set aside as we paused to honor our veterans. when i did talk to them about donald trump, i got mixed reactions. some are doubtful, some are guardedly optimistic. for others, it's business as usual. ♪ o say can you see >> reporter: the pomp and circumstance of the veterans day parade didn't disappoint the large crowd gathered in san jose. >> i don't believe that he will help the veterans. >> i think a lot of people made a mistake and wanted to make a statement, but they don't realize the outcome. >> reporter: national exit polls show veterans overwhelmingly supported trump. you may remember during the campaign the candidate promised to focus on veterans' health care and housing and gave a nod to veterans in his acceptance speech. >> we will also finally take care of our great veterans. [ cheers ] they've been so loyal, and i've gotten to know so many over this 18-month journey. >> it's been quite a week. >> reporter: some bay area veterans are optimistic. >> i was encouraged by him when he was elected. he's going to support our troops. >> i'm hopeful. he's made a lot of promises. >> reporter: others want to give the president-elect a chance. >> i'm going to wait and see if he does the right thing for us. >> reporter: others support is the office if not the man. my soon-to-be commander in chief, i will support him as i do today with my existing commander in chief. >> reporter: trump has said one of his first actions as president will be firing the officials at the department of veterans affairs. reporting live from san jose, laura malpert, nbc bay area news. in milpitas, a ceremony at the veterans plaza at city hall. veterans say they value america's freedom and want to keep the peace. in san bruno, a more somber ceremony. the marines on hand to honor the men and women who have died fighting for the united states. two women and a man are found dead in at east bay home. i'm live in oakland tonight. straight ahead, 16 hours after a triple homicide, fbi agents are still here on scene. and homicide detectives are questioning a possible suspect. >> reporter: and yet another construction project gets underway in san francisco. this time along busy van ness. coming up, how long it will last and what drivers need to know to get around it. i'm meteorologist jeff ranieri. showers developing on our doppler radar to the north. how long the possibility of rain will last in your weekend in about eight minutes. home ieast y. and en th got sid a 911 call brought firefighters to this burning home in east bay. when they got inside, they found it was the scene of a triple murder. nbc bay area's elise kirshner joins us from oakland with the new details. >> reporter: well, tonight authorities say they are talking to a woman found at the crime scene, and more than 16 hours after the triple homicide you can see the caution tape is still up. streets are shut down as fbi agents and homicide detectives are gathering evidence here, trying to figure out how three people ended up dead. delaney caldwell first smelled the smoke. >> around 10:00. >> reporter: around midnight, caldwell saw fire crews heading toward a nearby home on dunbar drive in oakland. >> whoa, what's going on now? >> reporter: firefighters contained a small fire, then saw the bodies. >> we're in the process of gathering evidence and witnesses. >> reporter: first responders tried to save an oakland man found stabbed outside the two-story home. inside they found two women stabbed and shot. all three died at the scene. >> we are questioning a person that is involved in this. >> reporter: oakland police say a san jose woman detained outside the house is now being questioned while fbi agents comb the crime scene. why don't you want to show your face? >> i feel unsafe now. >> reporter: and though authorities haven't released the names of the victims -- >> seemed like happy people. >> reporter: a neighbor says families lived inside with teenage children. >> two moms, two sons, a daughter, and another lady. >> reporter: the triple homicide happened in a new development near the coliseum. a neighborhood linda adams says is usually safe. >> as long as i've lived here, i haven't seen anything like this before. especially with three lives lost. >> reporter: and authorities say once relatives are notified, the names of the three victims will be released. investigators could be here for several more hours. reporting live from oakland tonight, nbc bay area news. >> thanks. an update on a deadly crash in san jose. this driver, reca-- recard oh gomez, is behind bars charged with drunk driving and vehicular manslaughter. here's the scene. police say gomez triggered a three-car crash that killed a pedestrian walking near santa clara and 4th street yes yester. a news van was hit in the crash. a reporter and photographer were taken to the hospital. they're expected to be okay. the identity of the pedestrian killed has not officially been released. big changes coming to one of the biggest corridors in san francisco. starting tonight, work gets underway on the van ness improvement project. that will mean delays for drivers for years. nbc's kristi smith is live along van ness. it's expected to improve traffic and safety, but not for a while. >> reporter: that's right. drivers will have to be patient. that's the message here. tonight changes get underway here at broadway and van ness starting with the left turns. when it's done, buses will run down the middle of the street. for the next two years, expect construction in areas where some believe it's already too much. >> we make due, but it's rough doing deliveries here every week. >> reporter: dusty hamlin delivers groeseries -- groceries in busy san francisco. he saw the san about the improvement project and took a deep breath. >> i saw it. i was like, man, another construction zone? >> reporter: there are already projects along van ness and several north of market. this is an overhaul between lombard and metro statiission t safer. >> it moves forward with rapid transit which puts buses in the middle of the roadway. >> reporter: this is a render comi ing. coming up, left turns will be restricted which could make van ness safer. >> a lot of collisions that take place in san francisco are due to left turns between cars and pedestrians. if something in this city can be invested in for pedestrians, people with disabilities who rely on these services, then it is worth a little inconvenience. >> reporter: matt miller was hit by a car in another city 1 years ago. he wants the change. until it's complete, the mta is urging drivers to use patience and alternate routes. >> less cars, more buses, more friendly for at the pedestrians. it's all good. >> reporter: sfmpa part of the storm system heads north. i still think we'll get some moisture moving in across the bay area. as we zoom in and get a closer look at the scanning doppler radar, light activity developing just off the coastline. also near santa rosa. we'll show you on the futurecast, it now looks more and more likely that from 7:00 to about 9:30 tonight we'll have a passing shower move across. it's nothing heavy, but if you're out and about on your friday, even a few raindrops will make the roads dangerously slick. watch for that again tonight. overall, the best chance of getting any activity would be from 1:00 to 5:00 in the morning. as for marin, napa, sonoma counties, near the coastline of san francisco, only talking trace amounts to about .1 inch. here's the best news for your weekend. once we hit 9:00 in the morning and after that, we'll be on the drying side of the storm system. in terms of the morning forecast on your saturday, temperatures start off mild. not overly cold here. 55 in the south bay. 53 in the peninsula. 51 for the tri-valley. for the east bay, san francisco and the north bay, we'll go with low to mid 50s, as well. as we take you through the microclimate forecast on our saturday, numbers do cool off. another two to four degrees. winds pick up a little in the south bay. not extremely gusty. out of the northwest at 10. 72 in morgan hill. 70 in cupertino. for the east bay, also 70s for the interior valleys. 72 in concord. 73 in danville. check this out -- near the coastline, quite a few 60s, hayward to oakland to vallejo. a huge change from the mid to upper 70s we had earlier this week. near the peninsula, 66 in san mateo. 68 in belmont. 70 in palo alto. 61 toward the outer sunset. and 65 for the marina. for the north bay, winds will shift more out of the southwest. i think it's going to import some slight humidity. it will be noticeable, but not overly humid. 67 in mill valley. 70 in santa rosa. and we'll look for 73 in napa. as we get you through the weekend, we're on cruise control once we get over that little chance of showers for tomorrow morning. we'll have increasing sunshine by saturday afternoon. mostly sunny skies on sunday. also into monday. a slight shower chance on tuesday. i think the best possibility of widespread accumulating bay area rain comes on next wednesday here. not only for san francisco but also for the inland valleys. early estimates show a quarter to maybe, just maybe a half inch next wednesday and also notice the temperatures. it will finally start to feel like fall again, down to 61. wednesday's forecast, overnight lows to 42. that's the day we're looking forward. you need the umbrella out and your jacket and all that stuff. this weekend looks good. >> november. >> yeah. >> because of a wildfire in the area. this is video from the launch around 10:30 this morning from vandenberg air force base north of santa barbara. the mission, to deliver a satellite into space that can take high-resolution photos of earth. this camera is so advanced it can spot the make of a car from nearly 400 miles above earth. the satellite was supposed to orbit back in september, but two wildfires at the launch base forced scientists to delay the mission. and you are looking at a funnel-shaped hole on mars. scientists think this could be the place where they'll find life on the red planet. the hole may have been formed by a volcanic eruption underneath a glacier. if that's true, it could hold enough water, heat, and nutrients for organisms to survive and reproduce. because of
