I think well be dry in the next 24 hours, but between 3 45 to 4 25, we had a very isolated area of heavy rain in east san jose, even reporting a few pieces of hail. That has gone to the south, hitting san martin with about an eighth of an inch. Waters on the roadway. The water over the past 24 hours will likely see some isolated road flooding youll have to drive through. On the Doppler Radar, most of it again is gone, but throughout tonight it will be these pockets of rainfall that likely could pop up at least throughout the next six hours. With that said, a flood advisory continues through tonight. Watch for any kind of waters on the roadways. Creeks, rivers and streams may still be rising a bit, so you want to advise caution if youre heading anywhere near that. Storm totals so far, unreal. 24hour period. Geyserville, over 11 inches, san jose, over four. Well have totals on our next storm system in about 10 minutes. Dangerous and loud. A wakeup call in union city as a eucalyptus tree crashed. Two people were inside and they were injured and taken to the hospital for observation. The building is near trefry court. There are several large eucalyptus trees lining this area, and there is awareness that they may pose a threat during the next few days. Reporter it is improving, but as you can see, a dangerous situation for many people. If i were here yesterday, the water would have been over my knees. Neighbors are able to go home, but for so many, they cant go home yet. Marabel garcia doesnt know when shell be able to sleep in her own bed. Mobile home park waded in kneedeep water, trying to save what they could. Gentlem Janette Perez has a twomonthold baby. A trash bag of clothes is all they were able to take with them. What we need is warm clothes right now and a couple diapers. A handful of neighbors pitched in to help clean up. They used buckets and a pump to remove the water. its taking the water off and pumping it to the drain abage outside. Reporter throughout date, there was improvement but not enough for marabel and her family. There are shelters for families who cant go back in their homes. City inspectors will be out looking for health or safety issues that come up. Michelle roberts, nbc bay area news. Along the russian river, the real problems started after the heavy rain stopped. This morning the river topped its banks, flooding several homes in and around gernville. Many residents say they cant remember the water rising this fast, but theyre taking it all in stride. Mark matthews is live. Mark, the flooding is not surprising . No, not for a while. Residents are referring to this as casual high water. Let me show you what that looks like. From the death of the highland dell, general manager herwig loose has more than a foot of water. Loose has been here for 11 years. He has never seen the river come up this quickly. Neither has steve gertz who was out paddling around in the rv park. Too fast for some folks to get their cars and belongings to higher ground. The Geological Service was measuring the wind depth and velocity in the water. That data will compute total flow of the river. Well, its a little higher than normal. Reporter if youre not from around here, you might think it was a contest to see who could deadpan what others might think of as a disaster. From heavy rain from yesterdays massive storm, it washed away portions of highway 101 in marin county. Authorities have not said when the roadway will be open. Every corner of the bay area has something in common today. Of course, cleaning up from pittsburgh to pacifica, people spent the day cleaning drains and picking up fallen trees and branches. Christy is live from pacifica and the impact there. Reporter good evening to you. That powerful storm was generating some pretty big waves here in pacifica. One surfer said it seems like its dying down now, but neighbors say theyre relieved. They can see a little blue sky after that rain to clean up today. A surf advisory lasted until this afternoon. One pacifica resident said when the waves pound the rocks, she knows it will be rough. Many places in the bay area were still getting rain on and off today. In the rows garden, public works crews had their work cut out getting rid of two big trees. One went across a public walkway, and the schools that closed were back hope today. It could have tied state funds to lack of attendance, but today they learned that wouldnt happen. They sent out an advisory to School Districts yesterday stating that School Districts will likely be able to recover these funds, so there will be no financial loss, we hope, for oakland or for other california School Districts. Reporter he says that can range from about 31 to 54 depending on the student and demographics of a district. Divers from the l. A. Fire department were able to pull him to safety. He was treated for hypothermia. In kamarillo springs, mud was a problem. The hillside gave way. Many of these hillsides were actually charred by those wildfires earlier this year. Mud and rocks came sliding down on homes and cars. Parts of this neighborhood were evacuated. Then at 6 00, record rain. But how much of a dent did it put on our drought . You were expecting much more . We were expecting more. We checked the reservoirs to see how much the water has risen. Thats new at 6 00. Bad weather could be blamed for knocking out the bart connector going to the airport. Debris had been blown onto the tracks. Crews have been working for several hours now. Passengers had to rely on buses all day to get them to the airport. There were about 30 people on that train, so we sent another train and were able to get them out on their way and hopefully nobody missed any flights. The drivers train system began running just two weeks ago. They go from barts cm station and terminal 1. The storm forced sfo to cancel and delay hundreds of flights over the last couple days. But even without the weather, sfo sees more delays, cancellations and missed connections than almost any other airport in the country, especially during the Holiday Travel season. But the big question is why. Investigative reporters lease kirschner has some answers. Its second only to newark in missing flights. The Investigative Unit looked at data from the department of trm transportation. We also found in the last three years during the months of november and december, 11 of arriving flights were delayed 45 minutes or longer. And 2 were canceled at sfo. Smart asset, a Financial Company that also analyzed flight data says that can cost travelers money and time. Whether youre having to book a hotel room, whether youre having to rent a car to get where youre trying to get, or if youre just wasting time, sitting there waiting, that all is costing money. They said in the last three years, it cost those stranded at sfo more than 65 million. But the airline may also be responsible, too, for all those canceled or missed flights. As the storm system moves off to the south, we of course had some devastating effects here across the bay area, but also some beautiful side effects. You can see again that double rainbow, a little bit of sun breaking through the clouds going back toward the darkness of the sky and some storm activity left, and you get the multitude of colors left in the sky. Well take you to the storm totals we had over the past 24 hours, and it is impressive. Check out just a few of them. Healdsburg, almost 7 inches. Menlo park, over 5 inches, willow glen picking up almost four. That was the last 24 hours and that was where the concerns came from. Whether it was a midwest storm, an east coast or northeast storm, we got rain in 24 hours and that was historic. For san jose, it now comes down as the third wettest day ever in san jose back to when recordkeeping started, back in the 1800s. The most rainfall in december also. In San Francisco, the most 48hour rainfall in downtown s. F. Since january of 2002, some 12 years and 11 months to go, and by my calculations, this was the strongest storm rated by central low pressure since october of 2009. So a lot here with that storm system that moved in, but thankfully it is now moving out, even though we needed that water. You can see the Doppler Radar right now. We have a few areas of spotty showers lingering from the north bay to the south bay, and thats likely what well see continue to linger tonight. Down in the south bay, morgan hill, also san martin and gi gilroy, youre still dealing with this isolated storm system moving from the south to the east. I would think 40 more minutes of wet weather and then youll see a period of drying headed your way. Youll see as we continue through 7 00 tonight. Isolated showers across the bay area as we head out. 11 30, we still cant shake the chance here of weather, but the good news is starting tomorrow morning, on saturday, were showing dry conditions across bait area, a little bit of cloud cov cover, and we should still have some sunshine mixed in. The other thing you want to Pay Attention to, we havent looked at it a whole lot lately, is that number highlighted in white. Thats your overnight low. Temperatures are going to be dipping down into the upper 30s and low 40s so a cold start and also a rather cold finish for us. Now that our storm moved through, temperatures only expected in the upper 50s for san jose. Palo alto 48. Lets take you to the north bay, east bay and tri valley. What youll find here in the north bay, thats likely where well have the best chance for some 30s in santa rosa. In the tri valley, it looks like youll start with 42 in the afternoon, going up to 56. Lets look at the weather trend. In the next five days, a little time to breathe on saturday and sunday, but then check this out. Another storm system by monday, tuesday and wednesday. Right now it looks like as that storm rolls in, we could see anywhere from 1 to 2 inches of rainfall. A little bit of a break and more wet weather coming our way, guys. We want to tell you some good news. The bart connector from the coliseum bart station to the Oakland Airport has just reopened. Its been basically shut down all day because of some debris on the tracks possibly from the storm. People had been taking buses in order to get to the airport. But good news again. This new bart connector that just opened two weeks ago is back up and running. No more bus service is needed there. The Bay Area Community is asking you to trade your guns for cash to help honor a deadly anniversary. Stay with us. This was a big deal. All five of londons airports were shut down today. Tonight britains government is demanding answers after a computer failure. The airports were shut down for less than an hour, but plenty of headaches in the aftermath. More than 60 flights were canceled, affecting air traffic all across europe. Now, we should note u. S. Flights to london were not delayed. The problem was traced to a Computer System with the u. K. s air Traffic Management company, which has experience aid numbd of problems in the past. California new handgun law goes into effect in just over two weeks, but gun rights advocates say it wont save any lives. Handguns purchased in california must meet all safety and firing tests. That includes child safety features and Microstamping Technology that puts intentional marks on bullet casings to help solve gun crimes. The law also closes a loophole that allows semiautomatic handguns to be modified to single shot handguns being sold. They say it only hurts business shop owners soon to be selling outdated guns. Today marks the second anniversary of the sandy hook massacre. There are three events here in the bay area and they are all tomorrow. Youth uprising is holding a buyback at its mcarthur boulevard office. Its also arranging buybacks in San Francisco and san jose. The group will pay up to 200 per gun, no questions asked. Sunday marks two years since the shooting at sandy hook elementary. 20 children and 6 adults were killed at that connecticut school.
