service going on in the east bay tonight for a college student who was killed in santa barbara last weekend. he was one of the six victims in the deadly attack near the ucsb campus. and kimberly tere joins us with more. >> diane, you can see there are still people arriving here, and that memorial service is set to begin in just a few minutes. it's at harbor light church on the campus of david wang's alma mater school. he was studying computer science at uc santa barbara. the 20-year-old along with two of his friends were killed inside the apartment they shared with the suspect. today, the focus is on wang's life and the kind of man he was. >> he is quiet, nice young man. very gentle. >> wang was supposed to be returning to the bay area on summer break in a couple weeks, and the family was actually planning to celebrate his 21st birthday next month. the only child loved basketball and it's clear by the turnout he was loved by faculty, staff, and former classmates. as you go into the church, they're handing out these programs with a photo of wang, his graduation photo here, and then photos of him as a child inside. live in fremont, kimberly tere. >> thanks very much. a stanford professor tonight is out of jail on $500,000 bail after tsa agents in los angeles found a live hand grenade in his luggage. this is a tsa photo of the world war ii relic. political science professor gary cox said it was an honest mistake. his father used it as a paper weight for decades. after his death, he was bringing some of his father's belongings home to palo alto. he said he never suspected it would have live capability. hundreds of passengers were delayed as the bomb squad seized and destroyed the device. he was told the charges against him would be dropped. police have not confirmed that. >> tomorrow in the east bay, one school is planning to have extra security after a woman attacked a 9-year-old child on campus with a hammer. it happened at lafayette school in oakland. the attacker is the mother of another child at the same school. according to a district spokesperson, the victim was beating during recess. when the girl's teacher found she didn't return from class, they found the 9-year-old leaving the bathroom with the suspected attacker. crews rushed the girl to the hospital for nonlife threatening injuries. the woman was arrested at the scene. the district spokesperson said it may have started with a family feud off campus. tomorrow, oakland police plan to offer extra security there. one man under arrest, another hospitalized after a fight broke out at a santa rosa park last night. it happened around 9:00 at jewel yard park. when the two men got into an argument, they started fighting. one stabbed the other in the back. the victim was taken to the hospital to be treated for non-life threatening injuries. they arrested a 20-year-old. he's charged with assault with a deadly weapon and violation of probation. sergeant bowe bergdahl is experiencing freedom for the first time in almost five years after being held by the taliban, and tonight, his parents say they just can't wait to wrap their arms around their son. they returned to idaho after meeting with president obama at the white house yesterday. they used a news conference to deliver another message to their son. they told him about the outpouring of support from all over the country. >> so many people are in place to assist you. and all the aspects of your recovery to full health. trust them. it's okay, and give yourself all of the time you need to recover and decompress. there is no hurry. >> bergdahl was flown from afghanistan to germany this morning for treatment. he's expected to be in the hospital for a week before returning to the united states. in washington state, six climbers are presumed dead on mt. rainier after a climbing accident. search crews found a trail of scattered equipment this weekend. the group was heading to the summit. as miguel almaguer reports, they were taking on one of the most technical and physically grueling routes. >> the six unidentified climbers were closing in on mt. rainier's summit when park rangers say the group was likely killed. expected off the mountain friday when the two guides from alpine assents and their four clients failed to check in. rescue teams from washington's joint base lewis mcchord launched a chinook helicopter like this one. pings from buried emergency beacons led searchers to this avalanche site, 3,000 feet below the climbers' last known location. what rangers say was certain to be a deadly fall. >> a fall that enormity is not viable that anybody would survive. >> suspending their search late saturday, the area where snow, ice, and rock constantly fall is too dangerous for rescue teams. about 60 miles south of seattle, mt. rainier's highest peak is over 14,000 feet. the climbers said to be hiking in approach that was one of the most challenging on the mountain. >> it's one of the most dangerous spots in the park. >> last year, some 11,000 people attempted to scale rainier, an iconic mountain that has also proven deadly. one person died on average every year here. now it appears the mountain has claimed six more lives, bodies rangers say may not be recovered anytime soon. miguel almaguer, nbc news. and coming up next at 5:00, a bay area congressional race getting working for kids, working for immigration reform, working for nose who really have no one to work for them, that's mike honda. ro khanna, half honda's age, who says we have got to get in touch with technology, we've got to realize that the world is passing us by, and we better catch up as fast as we can. >> recent polls show honda with the lead. he may still face a november challenge from kana, though, under the state's top two primary system that sends the top two finishers in the june primary to the fall election regardless of party. >> not just politics but money. it's going to take big money to become the next mayor of san jose which is tenth largest city in the nation. that's what political analysts are saying as we head to the final push to this tuesday's primary election. there are five may oral candidates. >> the signs are everywhere in san jose, as a crowded field of candidates enter the last leg of the primary campaign. matt perretti sees the signs every day across the street from his shop, but he's been dismayed by a political system he feels needs a tune-up. >> it's hard. it's hard to have faith in our politicians with the way things are going. >> it's voters like perretti that the mayoral candidates have to win over if they hope to have a chance. four of the candidates are counsel members who are aligned, for the most part, with the mayor. they are madison within, pierre luegy, dave cortezy is the fifth candidate. all have said safety is among their top priorities and all are facing a very expensive reality. >> if you want to run for mayor of san jose, you better be able to raise about $2 million. >> dr. terry christiansen has studied san jose politics for about 44 years and says the candidates with the best foot soldiers over the next week are the most likely to end up in the november run-off. >> turnout is a problem, and that means the candidates that can most effectively get their voters out have a better shot. >> that means the next few days will be extra busy for mail men and women like this man, whose bag always gets heavier around election time. >> we have a lot of political mail. we have to carry a lot. it's a little too much, but you know, you need to do it. >> the winner takes over a city that is still not yet out of the financial woods. damian trujillo, nbc bay area news. according to the latest polls, jerry brown will likely win re-election in a landslide come tuesday. he has a significant lead over his two republican challengers. the poll show s brown would defeat tim donnelly by 54% to 26%. businessman neel kashkari, brown would win 55% to 27%. one reason for the strong showling, the poll finds the lowest levels of pessimism among the state's future in the history of the poll. >> they have spend a couple weeks on top of a san jose parking garage. >> they're wild animals in an urban environment. >> the close eyes these volunteers are keeping on special animals in making the bay area proud. they're keeping a close eye. i think i've got it. gridlock. teacher layoffs. and a 60 billion dollar budget deficit. that's what john perez faced when he became speaker of the california assembly. so he partnered with governor brown to pass three balanced budgets, on time. for the first time in thirty years. today, the deficits are gone and we've invested an additional 2 billion dollars in education. now john perez is running for controller, to keep fighting for balanced budgets. democrat john perez for controller. now a bit of the animal kingdom in the urban jungle. we'll meet a team of volunteers who make sure san jose's newest residents make it past their first few weeks of life. we're shown in tonight's bay area proud. >> of all the places in the city of san jose to hold a party, the roof of the parking garage at the corner of south 4th and east san fernando might seem less than desirable to most people, yet completely logical to these people. >> they can come out and fly. >> that's because for jody and more than a dozen volunteers like her, over the past two weeks, this spot has been their home away from home while keeping a constant watch on someone else's home. >> they're wild animals in an urban environment, so we need to make sure that they survive and go forth and multiply. >> this is now the eighth year that the falcons have been nesting atop san jose city hall, and for the eighth year, they have produced chicks. this time, four of them. two boys and two girls. and while the falcons are great at flying, fastest in the world, as a matter of fact, they're not so good at landing. at least when they're young. >> when it comes to coordinating their wings and their feet is when they run into trouble. >> glenn stewart is with uc santa cruz's predatory bird research group. >> what's going on with the weather. i have to say i loved today. >> wasn't it nice? 80s and 90s. a taste of summer, but that's all about to change. in fact, temperatures today in many locations were above average. take off about 10 to 15 degrees from temperatures today's, that will by our highs for tomorrow. it's really going to be chilly, especially at the coastline. san francisco at 71. 62 for tomorrow. livermore was our warmest at niebt today. 75 for tomorrow. it will be jacket weather for the rest of tomorrow and tuesday. you'll notice thatmumarine layer shrouded in portions of the golden gate bridge and san francisco downtown, down towards santa cruz as well. there's the swirl, you can see it moving down south over the past six hours. that's the system that's developing off the coast, and eventually, it's going to move this way. that's why we're expecting widespread fog for tomorrow and also for tuesday. in fact, this system as it moves onshore, it's not going to give us rain per se, but we will get drizzle, especially at the coast. as you go over the golden gate bridge, even the bay bridge tomorrow morning, expect to see drizzle. not only for that matter, but tomorrow afternoon. all day long, it's going to stay foggy at the coastline. not a lot of sunshine coming our way monday and tuesday. right now, we're looking at clear visibility from the south bay peninsula, even from the east bay. trivalley at 88. oakland, 68 degrees. san francisco, as i was mentioning, shrouded in with fog. the golden gate bridge, this is what it's going to look like night and day for the next couple days at the golden gate because of the system i was telling you about. the microclimates, temperatures much cooler for tomorrow. still very comfortable in santa clara with plenty of sunshine by the afternoon, 74. gilroy at 76. palo alto y you'll see the fog in the morning and you'll clear out in the afternoon. it will stay foggy in san mateo, even san francisco not going to see a lot of sunshine for tomorrow. that's going to mean we're going to spend most of the day in the 50s. so definitely jacket weather there. of course, kind of unusual to see folks in shorts, but then you think, those must be visitors, right? if you're visiting the bay area here in june, that's typical. we call it june gloom. trivalley expected temperatures tomorrow in the 70s. oakland with the fog and drizzle, only going to get to 68. the fog and drizzle could measure up to about a tenth of an inch in san francisco. maybe a quarter inch in point reyes. that's really impressive when it comes to drizzle because it's harder to measure. when we're talking about measurable drizzle, that's good news. especially considering we're in one of the driest years we have ever seen in california. we'll take every drop, whether it comes in drizzle, mist, or shower. monday and tuesday, it stays cool. then we get back to the 80s and 90s. diane, your kind of weather is headed our way for wednesday and thursday. perfect beach weather by next weekend as well. you can see that on the seven-day forecast, it's going to be all over the place. call it a roller coaster this week. monday and tuesday, down, and back up by wednesday and thursday. >> one of those, something for everyone. >> indeed. >> thank you. coming up, students are being forced to retake advanced placement tests. >> we're going to show you while hundreds of seniors are going to have to prepare again for the big exams. major stress for high school students and parents in pleasanton. >> that's because the results of their advanced placement tests were thrown out. so those students have to take them again this coming week. some 400 students at amador valley high will have to retake their ap biology test. when parents found out that the california college board found seating irregularities. the problem, the desks were not far enough apart. after months of studying and preparing, senior morgan fisk is worried and her parents are just a little bit frustrated. >> finals are coming up in like the next two weeks. so i'm supposed to be preparing for finals, but instead i have to worry about this a.p. test. >> i'm definitely going to address the vice president or principal of the school and let them know my frustration. my issue is the kids did nothing wrong. >> the superintendent of schools told us teachers and staff will do everything they can to help support students and lighten the school load. students will also be given the option to receive a refund if they don't want to retake the test. >> all they have to 2:04:26. >> i wonder which one he is. >> the one in front. first time sarah haskins came up from florida. she won the women's race. took her 2:18:42 to finish that race. a grueling race features 1.5 mile swim from alcatraz to shore, then you go on an 18-mile bike ride to warm up, and then an 8-mile run. some say potts made it look easy. >> i was pushing the whole way. i train hard so it may look like it's easy on race day, but that's kind of a goal of training hard. >> races aged 16 all the way up to 76 came from more than 40 countries to participate in that triathlon. it's huge. >> there are
