This group started their peaceful demonstration about an hour ago at the fruitvale b. A. R. T. Station. And like i said, they went down international boulevard for the past 45 minutes and now have gone on to foothill boulevard. A similar march is now happening in san jose as well. Also new at 5 00, a lot of construction in the south bay. That means a lot of traffic. Heres the map. North san jose, specifically montague expressway and first street, this is expected to be the next major hub in terms of technology of the silicon valley. And its also just down the road from the 49ers new stadium. Business and tech reporter scott budman is there tonight. And scott, hows the progress behind you . Reporter its been going on very strongly for months now, raj. And you can see lots of growth both for business and residential. But all that growth comes at a price for local commuters and traffic. Safety and legal issues have forced pg e to miss its earnings estimates. Company leaders announced First Quarter profits fell by 12 million compared to last year. Pg e has been bogged down with 40 million in safety improvements and legal fees prompted by the deadly 2010 gas pipeline explosion in san bruno. Our bay area proud series takes us to stanford but not necessarily on campus. Thats an important distinction because one law professor says what her students theyd to learn cant be taught in a classroom. Garr rinne thomas joins us. Julias law students will likely one day be handling multimilliondollar cases for bigtime firms. Still in her class, she start by creating a Household Budget for someone making just a few dollars an hour. Its her way of impressing on them that the good lawyer needs to understand that in every case, the stakes are high, even if the dollars are not. Reporter if you have ever taken the University Avenue exit off 101, youve likely discovered there is more than just a highway separating palo alto and East Palo Alto. At times, the green lawns of Stanford University to the west seem a world away. From the workingclass streets to the east. Except, that is, on this street in this building. Are you going to have a chance to talk to the Police Officer . Reporter juliet brody is a stanford law professor and director of the Stanford Community law clinic. Quite intentionally located off of campus and east of 101. Each quarter julia takes on a team of law students who take on no other courses. They work here 9 00 to 5 00, sometimes more, representing residents of East Palo Alto who could otherwise never dream of hiring a lawyer. In the ten years the clinic has been up and running, they have represented 1,500 clients, never asking a penny in return. We joke that the clients, i mean, its really no joke, but the clients of the clinic, theyre lot ltery winners. Reporter juliet closely supervises her students. Evictions, back wages, criminal record expungements make up most of the caseload. The students getting reallife courtroom experience as lawyers, learning to deal with clients, judges, opposing counsel, but most of all learning that the law is not just something written in a book. Law is a real thing. It affects real people in real lives and real jobs in real apartments. It really is affecting someones life. Reporter grace seo took the course last semester. Like many of her classmates, she will one day be arguing cases considered much bigger. What juliet wants all of them to remember, though, is that doesnt mean they are any more important. One thing to remember in all this, were so used to in criminal cases you have a right to an attorney. In civil cases you dont. If you dont have the money to pay for one, the court doesnt appoint you a lawyer. Youre out of luck. Its not even the quality of the lawyer were talking about. You dont get a lawyer unless, you know, you can afford one or in this case, youre lucky enough to get these law students. But supervised by a law professor. Youre getting some highquality representation. She said theyve done some research, some anecdotal stuff. Their clients do a lot better with them than without. Im sure. Smart kids, too. Thanks, garvin. Before we bring in jeff, we want to show you new video into our newsroom. Its somewhat sobering. Surveyors with the state department of Water Resources didnt need to take their skis to take measurements of the sierra snow pack today. Take a look. They didnt even need long sleeves. Usually echo summit where they are is still under about five feet of snow usually on may 1st, but today being may 1st, thats not the case. No surprise this is the third year of our withering Drought Conditions for our state. That looks sad. But i hope were enjoying the weather while it lasts because changes could be on the way. Yeah. By this weekend. We are under this extreme pattern shift the past two months there really hasnt been anything thats been close to average. Today another day with well aboveaverage temperatures. At the coastline, you saw scenes like this. Plenty of blue sky right up against the immediate coastline. No sign of any fog, at least throughout a good part of today. Hottest temperature at the coastline so far, Half Moon Bay at 80 degrees. Keep in mind the average, 61 this time of year. And the hottest temperature inland goes to sunnyvale. 97. While it was warm out here for today, temperatures did go down a few degrees. So lets go ahead and take a look at why were starting to see a little bit of cooling at this hour. There is a key reason why, and its all this fog beginning to build up at the immediate coastline. At the current hour, just with the fog building and a slight thats it, just a slight onshore wind, were starting to see temperatures cool anywhere from two degrees in Half Moon Bay to even six degrees at this hour compared to this time yesterday in santa cruz. Yes, cooler changes are going to be quickly around the corner. Take you outside to the sky cam network. You can see were dropping into the 70s in San Francisco. We have that high cloud cover up above and were running with some of the warmest weather in the south bay. The source of all the heat has been coming way up from southern california. So thats why the south bay is the warmest. Kidding door their best at chavez park to stay cool. Looks like a great idea in the fountains outside tonight. Its going to be another mild one throughout this evening throughout the south bay with 70s through probably about 11 00. The changes here, High Pressure has been the main thing keeping us hot. But heres the thing as we head throughout tomorrow, dramatic changes. This thing is really going to weaken as we head throughout friday and also saturdays forecast. As that begins to fade, were going to see a cold front enter the picture for fridays forecast. That will, again, bring fog right against the coastline. We think temps will cool by five to ten degrees and well even have showers close by as we head throughout this weekend forecast. Ill have more on the possibility of those showers coming up. But i do want to take you more into that microclimate forecast as we head throughout friday. Well keep the high cloud cover above. And instead of 90s across the south bay, a lot more doable. Well go with 80s around downtown. Still above average, though. 89 degrees. For the peninsula most notably instead of upper 80s in san mateo, 79 for tomorrow. A little cooling off from palo alto with 86. Instead of upper 70s and low and mid80s in San Francisco, were going to drop down to 73 along the embarcarde
