started. and his dad tried to alert the family still inside the home. >> the house is on fire. >> we called them out. they stayed in our house a little bit. >> reporter: the couple and two small children were not injured, but they could hear parts of their cars exploding as they burned next door. a man who lives down the block said it was the initial explosion that shook him. >> it sounded like a bomb went off, and then it just engulfed the cars. >> reporter: that was at about 2:00 in the morning. within minutes both cars were overcome with flames and fire had spread to the garage. >> normally a car would take a little bit to catch on fire. that car torched in three minutes, i mean it was torched >> reporter: contra costa arson investigators are looking into the fire and a spokesman for the fire district said it is considered suspicious. now, that spokesperson for the fire district told me that he could not give us any more details about this fire, but he said more information should become available after those arson experts wrap up their investigation. we're live in martinez, thom jensen, nbc bay area news. >> tom, thank you very much. we continue to follow a developing story out of egypt. more than 40 people were killed, 100 injured in two separate explosions, both during palm sunday services. and isis is claiming responsibility for both attacks. the first happened at a church some 50 miles north of cairo. a man inside the church described it as a horrifying scene. >> translator: i was sitting in the front and all of a sudden everything went dark. i passed out and someone pushed me off my seat. a few seconds later i got up and saw bodies all around me. >> the second attack was in egypt's second largest city, alexander dri a, they say the blast was so strong nearby shops were destroyed. egypt's president has declared a three-month state of emergency. president trump sent out a tweet condemning the attacks and he is confident the president of egypt will handle it properly. tonight at a church in campbell they mourn those killed in the attacks. marianne favro is live at the  orthodox church with reaction from egyptian christians. marianne. >> reporter: terry, as worshippers came here to this coeptic church to pray, they expressed their solidarity with those in egypt who lost their lives practicing their faith. the blast set two churches in northern egypt turned palm services into scenes of horror. >> crying. >> reporter: tonight thousands of miles away at the saint george coeptic church in campbell, people came together to pray for the more than 40, men, women and children killed in the attack in egypt. >> condemn what's happening and we pray for our families back home in egypt. like all of us, we have family members over there. >> reporter: the bombings come less than four months after another deadly attack at a coeptic church in cairo. he is home from egypt lost relatives in that bombing. tonight at saint george, a sense of solidarity, grief, and disbelief. >> it's like before easter, the same thing is happening again. so, people are upset about what is going on and it's like they don't know if this is going to end. >> reporter: now that isis has claimed responsibility for the weekend attacks in egypt, some here questioned who is funding the organization. isis may have destroyed their churches in egypt, but they say the terrorist group cannot destroy their faith. tonight a pastor from a neighboring catholic church also came here to this church and brought flowers as a sense of solidarity. reporting live in twitter feed for the latest headlines. the san jose state student remains missing tonight despite reports that he may have been spotted today in the vallejo or benicia area. 23-year-old kevin redrico has been missing since wednesday. they found his car in benicia. people on paddle boards, jet skis combed the area and had no luck. they have been taking antidepressant to overcome a relationship problem and doubts the son is a danger to himself. the brother remains worried. >> i can't tell you the kind of mental state he's in. he's out here. i have no idea where he is. >> roughly 40 people are helping search for redrico. a deadly chain reaction crash in the south bay closing all southbound lanes ever 280. looking at the scene about 2:00 this morning near mc [ laughter laughlin. the third car burst into flames killing the driver. the speeder that caused the chain reaction is under arrest for -- under the influence is arrested. someone fired at two pan handlers hitting them near the lone tree off ramp p investigators are calling it a drive by shooting. a woman was treated at the hospital and released. since the beginning of 2015, more than 100 shootings have happened on bay area free ways and most of them in the east bay. now to our microclimate weather coverage. rain in the forecast yet again. meteorologist robb tracking when it's coming and how it is going to impact you. rob. >> now we're seeing a few clouds increase in emeryville. you can see some rain approaching the coast, but look very closely. notice this line. it's falling apart as it reaches parts of the north bay. that will be a trend that continues all watt i into tomorrow morning. the short-term future cast does pickup measurable rain near ukaiah. as we transition south ward measurable rain in santa rosa and san an sell month, but nothing really south of the golden gate. the first chance of showers really aimed in on the north bay. that trend will likely continue into most of tuesday. these incoming storms, not as windy as we saw last week. but overall above average for april which means especially by wednesday and thursday, more snow in the sierra, and higher rain tolls across the rest jose state university. campus police sent out an alert to students shortly after it happened yesterday saying there had been several reports of sexual battery in clark hall and martin luther king library. the female students were inappropriately touched from behind by the suspect. officers arrested the man. no word if he is a student or has any relation at all to the campus community. and as we reported last night at 11:00, similar attacks also being reported on the stanford campus. two women reported being groped on campus within minutes of each other. the suspect both cases described as a shorter bald man. the police are still not ruling out the pablt of there being two suspects. stanford has beefed up patrol in the area. a big day for giants fans tomorrow as the team plays its hope opener at at&t park. we'll take a live look at the ballpark right now. it is beautiful at night and it will be beautiful in the day tomorrow afternoon. 42,000 fans will be there cheering on their team. despite the close start, the giants did turn things around a bit today. right field home run by buster posy always helps with that kind of stuff. giants beat san diego 5-3. back to back home manifesto has intensified. he recorded himself sending a 161-page letter to the president calling for a revolution and saying it was, quote, game time. investigators fear he may be planning to attack schools, churches or government officials. hundreds of tips, he has eluded more than 150 officers, causing a lot of fear in wisconsin where he was last seen. >> you hear it on the news while it's happening over here, happening over there. it's like, this is like, wow. >> police say he has a bullet proof vest, a helmet and arsenal of stolen weapons. for many people when they worry about computer hacking and they worry about identity theft, or maybe stolen pin numbers, tonight dallas is proof that a hack attack can impact an entire city. nbc's steve patterson reports what happened there is causing alarm across the country including right here in the bay area. it sounded like an air raid over dallas. >> that is not a drill. >> reporter: on friday night, all 156 of the city's emergency sirens screaming in unison into the early hours of saturday morning. >> they say the alarms were coming from all over dallas. >> reporter: the cause, not a storm, but a cyber attack, creating fear and confusion, clogging 911 for hours. >> it's like finding a needle in a hey stack. >> reporter: the incident comes after years of warning from the cyber security community about the danger hacking can cause to vital infrastructure. homeland security statistics pinpoint nearly 300 attacks reported on critical systems in 2015 alone. >> certainly those parts of our infrastructure that is readily accessible is vulnerable to these attacks. >> reporter: one of the five most hacked states, texas, according to the tech firm digital guardian, second only to california. where in san francisco, an attack took light rail ticket machines off line during one of the busiest shopping weekends last year. >> we have reached a point where cyber crime is now pervasive. these kinds of attacks are happening all the time. >> reporter: sounding the alarms from the cyber security community for american cities. steve patterson, nbc news, los angeles. >> new at 11:00, a thief who took an expensive necklace wanted by police. investigators believe this man stole it from a jewelry store in napa last saturday. he walked in, said he wanted to try it on. they gave it to him. he walked out. the necklace is worth $7,000. a new development in the case of a yuba college student believed to be kidnapped in butte county turns out the ransom demands for her return were a hoax. 20-year-old alicia was last seen march 30th. her car and cell phone were found in a yuba city orchard. her mom received several text messages demanding a ransom for her daughter. it was a hoax and the person has been arrested for sending the messages. the person was not involved in the disappearance of yoeman and does not know where she is. a marin county sheriff's deputy injured after an alleged drunk driver crashed into his patrol car. happened at 3:00 this morning patroling mill val ill on shoreline highway by the fire side ninn. they crossed the lane hitting the deputy's car head on. the driver has been arrested for driving under the influence. new at 11:00, incredible video out of alberta. maybe the best story of the day. in canada a man jumped into freezing water to save his dog who wandered onto a half frozen pond. there's the dog and he's going to get out. all caught on video by a tv news crew at the pond. you know what they were doing there? they were doing a story on the dangers of thin ice. the dog was unaware of this apparently. the dog named cosmo broke through the ice without hesitating his owner plunged in to rescue him, and did. rob, can you top that story? >> very lucky. >> very lucky. dedication, the whole thing was a happy ending. fantastic. >> weather here not cold enough to worry about icing on the morning commute. we could see a chance of a few showers. north of san francisco before sunrise as we show you the views around the bay area right now, speaking of san francisco, not too bad. 51 degrees. we're going to see temperatures not in the 30s tonight. clouds moving in will prevent our temperatures from getting too cold. right now 51 degrees in san francisco, and all eyes on san francisco tomorrow afternoon, giants home opener starting at 1:35 in the afternoon. should see temperatures approaching the low 60s out at at&t park with clearing skies, a few sprinkles possible for the morning. there around san francisco. temperatures right now in emoryville, 52 degrees. in san jose now we have partly cloudy skies and 49 degrees. so, the temperature trend as we head towards the morning dropping off into the mid 40s and lower 40s actually in the north bay. 48 degrees in san jose, close to 50 in san francisco, and it should be a relatively mild day around the south bay. these temperatures will be warmer on the scale of about five to 8 degrees from the high we saw today. could get close to 70, downtown, 67 in los gatos. sunol pleasanton, 68 around danville, san ramon, 65 in hayward. peninsula temperatures, san francisco as you saw earlier, low 60s just south of downtown. and as you head over to the north bay tomorrow, best chances for measurable rainfall, north of mill valley, santa rosa, highs tomorrow in the low 60s. notice on the satellite view in the last hour or so, the rain lines breaking apart. again the system bringing a lot of clouds, not necessarily a lot of rain. the best chance to find rain at this first of three systems we're tracking, we'll be in the hills in the north bay, northern sonoma county, head lands, no coincidence. hill tops, santa cruz mountains, and off to the east of san jose around let's say mount hamilton and maybe just north of the golden gate at times, right around 11:00 in the morning as the system comes on through. you see how the clouds kind of break up as we head through the evening. partly cloudy skies late tomorrow and then things change as we get into tuesday morning. this is a little different. ment model update keeping the rain into the north bay, even tuesday morning and watch as we advance this from 9:00 a.m. through about 7:00, those rain chances really staying north of san francisco. so, we're talking about three weather systems in five days. if you're in san francisco or san jose, you might not see a whole lot. all the way through tuesday evening. but wednesday and thursday we'll begin to see the changes in the form of first the winds are going to pickup a little bit as we head into tuesday night, wind speed increasing. wednesday and thursday brings the most precipitation in the bay area. wednesday night, thursday morning, saturday afternoon skies, relatively dry and next chance of rain probably arriving for the second half of sunday. lots of important plans for next weekend. easter sunday. right now plan on some showers as we get into sunday afternoon and evening. we'll fine tune that forecast to see how morning plans will be next sunday morning. as things like now, the rain will come back the second half of the weekend. i think the main event for most of the bay area is applied to the rain that we'll see will be during the day wednesday and thursday. not nearly as strong as the thursday storm, but unusually active actually for april to see that many rain chances in the seven-day forecast. >> easter sunday morning next sunday morning for the easter egg hunt, services? >> something we're watching closely now. looks like flight made an emergency landing in modesto after reports of a cargo fire. but when the plane touched down, there was no sign of any flames, not even any smoke. investigators say there was never any fire in the cargo area and that maybe a light on the control board might have malfunctioned suggesting there was a fire when there wasn't. passengers were rushed back to sacramento, relieved but delayed. a new report how airlines have improved the flying experience for customers. the department of transportation found 81% of flights were on time in 2016. up slightly from the previous year. tonight. look at this. someone recorded the very scary moment after two inflatable bounce houses flew into the air in south carolina, hurting five children. a strong gust of wind lifted those two bounce houses up. one of them went up in the air with children still in it and slammed down to the ground. the other with no one inside, flew into power lines causing an outage for several hours. all reporter liz wagner to expose a hazard they say dates back nearly a decade. >> guys, workers we talk to say they are not just complaining. they say they sustained life changing injuries on the job. they showed us scars from broken bones and multiple surgeries and rehab for a back fracture. they say in peed mont it's not a matter of if workers get hurt. it's when. and you're about to see why. peed mont's rolling hills and stately homes make it a desirable place to live, but a dangerous place to work if you're a garbage collector. >> i feel steep hills, upstairs, downstairs. >> reporter: in most cities trucks make pickups curb site. in peed mont they can pay extra for workers to retrieve them from their backyard. richmond, republic services. >> what we're talking about. >> reporter: as we follow the routes from our under cover van. workers pull transport containers up flights of stairs, lift empty bins over and over and over. and head back downhill carrying full loads. with unlimited recycling waste, they can have as many bins as they want and half of them have backyard accounts. mill valley is 8%. berkeley, a city that's just as hilly, where 1% of homes signed up for backyard pickup. >> it's the constant, i mean it's the lift and twist, lift and twist. >> reporter: god free says the lifting wore out his back. he's been off work for five months and in physical therapy. >> i believe something came loose. it's still popping and it's very painful. >> reporter: joseph brown has had three shoulder surgeries. >> the scar is from here to here. >> reporter: carl fernandez has gone under the knife four times. he says he crushed bones in his wrist when he slipped carrying a bin down the stairs. >> i can't throw the ball for my grandchildren. i can't pickup my grandchildren. >> reporter: richmond sanitary service won the contract in 2008. while the company is delivering what it promised, the workers say it's come at a price. they point to 15 people who they believe have been injured on the job. we talked to six who say they needed rehab or surgery. >> we were never trained to lift anything. you just throw a guy out there. that's how we do it. we winged it. >> reporter: brown raised concerns to the company in 2010 writing, our issues with the lack of training and consistency are being unheard. in 2012 he told osha, employees are getting injured when they lift. the company responded saying the workers are trained to request assistance or leave the cart if it's too heavy. and noted manual lifting is covered in safety meetings. >> there's no right way to lift these toteers. >> reporter: but god free says the bins called toters aren't meant to be lifted by hand. they're only supposed to be hooked up to trucks. >> do you think this is a problem the company wants to ignore? >> i believe it is. >> reporter: god free filed his own complaint with osha and earlier this year the inspector cited the company saying it did not provide effective training or correct unsafe conditions. we requested an interview with richmond sanitary service, but the company says it is appealing osha's decision and won't comment until the case is closed. did you have any idea these workers were getting hurt on the job? >> none. >> reporter: that's until peed mont city administrator paul benoit received an a nonmust complaint. the current one ends next summer. benoit is making safety a priority in the new contract. asking for ways of minimizing workers' comp concerns and advising bins should be carried easily and without excessive strain. >> that gives us the ability and audit and hold their feet to the fire. >> reporter: what adjustments can the ty make to the contract now to minimize worker injuries for the next year and a half of this contract? >> that's a good question. i actually don't have an answer to it. we're in a contractual relationship and it's up to the company to protect their workers and to run their operation. >> toter is jamb full. >> reporter: mark god friday says he hopes it will cause the company to take a closer look at safety and lighten the load for collecting bins in the backyard. >> there should be a uniform way of doing it. if not, eliminating it bring everything to the curb. >> reporter: city administrator says that is not likely to happen. in the future residents would be charged per bin which could cut down on the number the toters have to lift. we should also point out we found a recent audit a track service in peed mont. it doesn't discuss safety but notes the company's collection going up on a special tiny house, and album sales are up for a special musician. those are a couple of updates to some good news stories we've shared with you in the past. today in the bay garvin thomas has the latest on tonight's bay area proud. >> the bay area proud series is all about sharing stories of kindness, inspiration and success. highlighting the good that is happening around us each and every day. we've been at it for more than five years and one thing we've learned over that time is people don't stop doing good once their stories air. usually it's the opposite. >> you need to keep each other on track. >> reporter: our first stop is the elementary school in milpitas. we shared with you how rita maltbie had challenged her 6th graders and other students from other classes to design and actually build a real permanent tiny home on their school's campus. rita has yet to hear kids so young tackling such a project anywhere and wondered at times herself if they'd be able to do it, but no more. >> so, we have to put a building wrap on them. >> reporter: this past weekend the students with the help of block construction got the walls and the roof finished, and up on the house. and it's well on its way to being completed. we followed john preston's story for a few years now. the marine turned musician from the east bay has become a national crusader and a symbol in the fight against ptsd and veteran suicide. john's music and his message continue to get a bigger and bigger audience. his latest release, superman fall, a song based on the suicide of his older brother is included in a compilation album called battle cry, songs of american heroes which has gone as high as number 21 on the itunes rock album chart and is raising thousands of dollars for the va lca ry initiative. we've also recently heard some sad and some happy news from people we've metta long the way. rec bauers daughter let us know her dad passed away. rex was the jazzer size regular as they recovered from the fire. >> it's something that brings comfort. >> reporter: we also heard something wonderful from des ray. in 2015 she bravely shared the story of the death of her 5 month old daughter jordan and what it means to receive an angel gown, sewed from recycled wedding gowns. she shared with us just before the first of the year, she welcomed william, her rainbow baby to the have rain, some rain. >> the total not as much as we saw last week, but still several days especially if you're in the north bay where you could find some rain drops at times and the first in the series. starting to drop into the north bay later tonight. right now san jose 49 degrees outside, not too much in the way of cloud cover right now. and it's important to point out april usually is a transition month. for downtown san jose just over an inch of rain as we expect to get in an average year so far, not even halfway through the month, .83, a lot coming down on thursday and friday, and looks like we could maybe get close to a third of an inch or half an inch of rain in san jose by the time you add everything up between now and let's say by thursday afternoon. so, active weather making a come back. but the first system notice rainfall expectations highest for areas north of santa rosa, not a lot out of the system. impact area south of san francisco, not expecting a whole lot, a few showers possible in the summit of the santa cruz mountains and some of the inland coastal range hill top, may see a brief shower out of the system. really that appears to be it. temperatures tomorrow night, mid to upper 40s, but the chance of seeing a few scattered showers. notice the temperatures tomorrow afternoon. upper 60s, close to 70 south of san jose. we should see tri-valley temperatures including pleasanton close to 70 degrees. home opener for the giants first pitch 1:35. temperatures at the park should be low 6 0s. few morning sprinkles possible. the skies will clear later in the day. so, there is a look at that system weakening on approach, but notice bigger changes in store for tuesday. monday partly cloudy skies to the afternoon, and by the time we get to tuesday morning, mostly cloudy skies, but notice the rain chances kind of stop south of san francisco. in fact, most of the day tuesday now, really does look like it's just the santa cruz mountains in areas up here in the north bay into tuesday evening around 7:00 seeing the best chances of rain. now by 11:00 tuesday, rain chances extending into the south bay you'll notice late tuesday not a lot of wind to start the week, but by about let's say 5:00, 6:00, 11:00 tuesday, breezy, not very gusty like we had thursday night. the system will have wind. 20 to 35 miles per hour. that kind of precedes the best chance of rain for the rest of the bay area, including the south bay. that's going to be wednesday afternoon into thursday morning. thursday afternoon, friday, saturday looks dry and then late on sunday now looks like we'll see a chance of the showers making a comeback. how this plays out, the seven-day forecast, terry mentioned there are a lot of rain drops across the screen. monday, tuesday, most will be confined to the north bay. the focus wednesday and thursday, that will be the strongest system of the series, then friday and saturday skies clear, temperatures rebound pretty nicely and we'll keep a very close eye on the all-important waterproof easter eggs. right now, i say stay tuned. right around midday sunday could see those raindrops. jeff and terry will have a close can't, slow down the progression of the disease itself. neuroscientist jayal berts made a stunning discovery. cycling can increase certain proteins in the brain that help movement and cognitive function. >> so, these changes are similar to what happens when they're on med kapgs. >> exactly right. >> when you have medication you have an increase of activation in this area, similar increase in activation following exercise. so, exercise is, in fact, medicine. >> reporter: to activate those changes in the brain, patients have to do what's called forced exercise which means they're working a lot harder than they're used to working. but it's that hard work that gives them the benefits. to get the benefits, what's the formula? cycling three times a week at 80 to 90 rpm. >> i don't care what condition you're in that's pretty strenuous. >> reporter: that has worked so well he's taken the research out of the lab into the gym. >> the program returned me close to normal. >> reporter: at 60 different ymcas across the country now offering classes called pedestripedaling for parkinson's. >> it turned on a light bulb. it's the difference between pedaling and not pedaling. >> reporter: each
