David bowie has died. After an 18month battle with cancer. He was in pop, funk, punk, the list goes on during his 40plus year career p. This was posted to facebook. David bowie died peacefully today surrounded by his family after a courageous 18month battle with cancer. While many of you will share in this loss, we ask that you respect the familys privacy during their time of grief. We will follow this and give you updates as soon as we get them. Sad news there. Police do say that it could be the first shooting death ever on a b. A. R. T. Train. Detectives are hunting for the man behind the gun. This video given to us by a passenger on the train. It shows frantic moments after shots rang out. One man is dead. Nbc bay areas Christie Smith is live in front of the west oakland b. A. R. T. Station. Christie actually talked to the passenger who took the footage. Reporter thats right. Some people on that train say they werent sure what was happening or how far this shooter would go, that it all happened very quickly. Some of them got down on the floor of the train. Others they say stepped in to help. Horrified for a long time. Reporter brad chapin was riding b. A. R. T. When someone shooting in the train next to his. He was watching a video on his phone. Someone next to me was diving over me. Because i was in the aisle seat. I didnt really hear the shots, i dont think. I dont know. It was just so quick. So i sort of like got down. Im like what the heck is going on. Reporter chapin held his backpack as a shield. He taped the moments after. He said a man told them to get down. Some ran. Others caught their breath and tried to help the man who was shot. The man sitting next to him gave him cpr for like 10 minutes. Reporter he said some found nurses in the crowd and others blocked the view. I was impressed with how cool and collected they were. Reporter chapin is studying psychology and tried to assist riders. Despite the effort, the man did not survive. B. A. R. T. Police searched for the shooter for hours. Some riders told us they are feeling uneasy. Nervous, shaken. But again, i just try to hope for the best. Reporter b. A. R. T. Was interviewing witnesses and checking surveillance tape. Now at this point, b. A. R. T. Man shot and killed in the north bay tonight. It happened near maple and reese avenues. Police say the 22yearold man was on the ground and dead when they arrived. He had been shot multiple times. Police have not released his name. And are not saying anything about a possible suspect. Natural causes, thats what a newlyreleased autopsy shows about a controversial inmate death at the Santa Clara County jail. Walter roaches died in september. After a guard sprayed roaches with pepper spray and removed him from his cell. The Medical Center said that roaches died from a blood infection and other Chronic Health problems including high Blood Pressure and drug use. His death is one of many controversies facing the jail. Three deputies are facing murder charges after the death of another inmate, michael tie ree. In that case, tyree was severely beaten by the guard. Police across the bay area are looking for this woman, denise davis. She purposefully hit a Police Officer with her car on friday in daily city and apparently shes done it before. Davis was already wanted for striking another person with her car. If you see davis or know anything about her with wr abouts, daily city would certainly love to hear from you. They are also tweeting about this. Not mincing words about the incident. Chp retweeted the daily city tweet who said, be on the look out for this pathetic menace who ran down a Police Officer with her car. A missing uc graduate student, crews tell us they found several items who they believe belong to her at the lighthouse. The 22yearold was reported missing yesterday. Police say she was reportedly depressed and possibly suicidal. She was last seen about 1 30 thursday morning in burkely. Zhang was scheduled to fly to china yesterday morning but never showed up for the flight. Passing showers across the bay area today, not much, but enough to get the roads wet. Lets take a live at the bay bridge. Traffic moving smoothly. Rob knows and joins us now. Barely enough to get the windshield wipers going for maybe two minutes. Earlier we had light rain. 51 degrees and you could see the bands of very light showers. Passing on by. Enough to wet the ground in spots. As we go through tonight we will continue to see batches of showers coming on and very weak system here crossing over the coast, leaving the showers in the forecast as we go through the morning, our totals here, now just barely enough to measure. Some places not getting anything out of the first system of 3 to 4 now. We will see over the next 6 to 7 days. A chance to get the windshield wipers going at times for the morning commute and things dry out for the afternoon. But the waves cranking up again. High surf advisory starts tomorrow at 9 00 a. M. Could see the wave hikes up to 20 feet again at times. And this setting the stage for stormier weather to follow. Fire officials have increased the number of firefighters on duty at san jose manetta International Airport following an nbc bay area investigation last spring. Now the a the time, our team got only four firefighters work any given shift at the airport. Quite surprising. Experts call this a safety hazard. The airport increased staffing by 50 but is that even enough. Our Senior Investigative reporter steven stock joins us now with the followup. Sjc airport Officials Say they increased the number of firefighters because of an increase in the number in size of airplanes now using san jose manetta International Airport. Even the top Safety Experts says thats not enough and he says the airport is risking passenger safety. Last may, we discovered that san jose mineta International Airport had one of the lowest Staffing Levels compared to other airports its size in the country. Only three Fire Fighters and a captain were duty at any one time at sjc. That meant in the event of an emergency, left in charge of the coordinating the response, that left only one, one firefighters to help rescue and evacuate passengers from any airline wreckage. Even if it was a massive passenger plane such as a boeing 777 like the asiana crass. When asiana went down in july of 2013, there were 23 firefighters on duty and on the scene only minutes after the crash. The ntsb crash investigation credited San Franciscos Staffing Levels as being quote instrumental in responding quickly and saving lives. In san jose is marginally inadequate. Terribly disturbing to me. Months after the story aired, San Jose City council approving more money for the airport to upgrade Fire Fighting capability adding two more firefighters per shift plus another truck. Actually return to the Staffing Levels we had prior to the reduction when flights were a little more prevalent in those aircraft sizes. Overseeing the operations for san joses fire department. Im happy on a lot of levels. The economy is doing better. We are drawing larger aircraft more frequently. It gives us the opportunity to provide a higher level of service. With more International Flight and larger airplanes flying out of sjc, the airport was required by faa rule to increase its Emergency Response capability. As sjc had been classified as a sea airport and four firefighters and two arf trucks there met the minimum requirement. But because of increased traffic beginning in october, sjc was reclassified as an index d airport. That meant under faa rules, it had to have more firefighters and extra truck at the ready. New regulations for d require us to have three arf vehicles and proper amount of staff to operate those vehicles. John aiken is assistant director at san jose manetta airport. San jose is a safe airport. San jose hasnt add major accident. And if we do, i feel confident that San Jose Fire Department will be here it take care of the situation. Several sources tell us that nbc bay area story plus concern by Delta Air Lines also played a big role in the increase in personnel there. According to these emails, the sjc dating back it february of last year, Delta Air Lines insisted on higher minimum staffing for safety. The email showed that delta paid san jose to staff more firefighters before the airline would land at sjc with a chartered 747 aircraft. We had the extra truck and so we accommodated delta so that they could meet their minimum. Critics say its still not enough. Were one firefighter to the good. John carr wrote the book, literally, on aircraft Fire Fighting skills and procedures. He and colleague, les oman, served as firefighters at sjc in the 1970s. They then wrote procedures for arff training around the world. It is all nice on paper. But when you dont have the bodies, it is hard to recreate them. Especially now with the size of planes firing in and out of san jose manetta. There is just not those people to work those size of aircraft. Such as this 787 dreamliner, carrying 250 people, eight different exit doors and emergency escape slide. Even with the extra personnel added, that leaves two people, instead of one, left to man the eight emergency exit slides in the event of an emergency. John
