And a very interesting day in the north bay where you needed a jacket this morning for temperatures in the mid50s. Almost 50 degrees of warming topping out actually up to 102 degrees in healdsburg for the afternoon. So the other side, strong High Pressure acting like a lid on top of the bay area, trapping air pollution. Unfortunately, another spare the air day tomorrow for the east bay. Thats where were see the highest areas of ground ozone levels. Outside right now, it is after 11 00, its still 75 degrees in san jose. And in San Francisco 76 the average high this time of year is only 70 degrees. So were well past that here at 11 00. So how much longer will hot temperatures stick around . Christie, a lot of folks out there say theyre not used to these kind of temperatures. Yeah, thats absolutely right. I heard you say were in the 70s. Certainly much cooler than it was earlier today. As you can imagine, the beaches were just packed here in San Francisco with the folks trying to cool off. As rob mentioned, another spare the air alert. We have the heat, but also the potential for smoke. Near at t park, giants fans loved the wind, but werent expecting the heat. It was boiling. Weve been to about seven games and this has been the hottest. We had to move seats multiple times to find shade. They drank water and sprayed it. Come on, gimme ah, so nice. Reporter near 19th avenue, an unofficial reading at 92 degrees. San francisco reached 93 at the peak. The beaches were a big draw. Fantastic. Never seen it with so many people. Great. Reporter a spare the air smog alert has been issued for monday. High temperatures expected in the east bay, which is sending up ozone level, a lung irritant. The other thing is were seeing smoke still ongoing from the valley fire. Luckily thats not making its way into napa right now. Weve set up two air quality monitors, temporary monitors to track the situation. Fans are the biggest sellers right now. Reporter over at brunnies hardware, fans are working and moving. Here are the latest numbers from cal fire. 1,050 homes and structures have been destroyed. That is up from just yesterday. Its burned more than 75,000 acres. 69 contained. Thats also up quite a bit from yesterday. Weve also learned that starting tomorrow at 5 00 p. M. , the evacuation also be lifted for north lock lomond, Seigler Springs and bonanza springs. For those who have no home to return to, the daunting task of starting over begins now. Reporter it certainly is daunting, terry. More than 120 people visited the Relief Center today. And many of them talked to us about having survivors guilt. They say its so difficult to be happy that your home is Still Standing when their neighbors are coming home to pictures like this. The flames that terrorize their neighborhood and sent them running are gone. Now the grueling task of rebuilding begins. The Senior Center in middletown. A onestop shop for help with everything from insurance forms to replacing scorched birth certificates. What people are coming here the most for right now are food, water, and assistance with cleanup. Reporter oliver, a therapy dog did his best to cheer up crying children and soothe their stressed parents. When richard learned his home was Still Standing, he went to work volunteering. It was bittersweet because a lot of our family members lost multiple homes. Reporter others who had a home to return to said they had survivors guilt. I was looking around me. And i had survivor syndrome. Guilt. Yeah. Oh my god, they have nothing. I was overwhelmed with sadness. Reporter jarelin and her partner holland hollander, who has cancer, feels fortunate to sleep in their own house for the First Time Since the fire broke out. They started giving their clothes to friends who lost everything. Weve got a lot of work to do here in this community. We have to be the phoenix that rises from the ashes. Those of us who have a place to start with, then we can help the ones who dont. Reporter a renewed strength and determination to revive middletown. Now tonight about every 20 minutes, weve seen firefighters patrol this area. They tell me theyre looking for looters. But theyre also looking for hot spots. They found some. They tell me they found a smoldering fire on the hillside. And on highway 29, they also found another hot spot. They are definitely keeping vigilant tonight. Well, that is the sentiment for many fire survivors. Coming up in half an hour, nbc bay areas travels with two families to see their homes for the first time. As the valley fire rages on, its already one of the most devastating fire in california history. The worst fire ever in california in terms of the number of structures damaged that was the Oakland Hills fire. It ravaged the east bay in october 1991, destroying 2900 structures. It killed 25 people. While the Oakland Hills fire raijed the most destructive, the valley fire is climbing the list. Right now its ranked sixth. While the butte fire continues to burn, it is listed at seven. The rankings will likely rise by the time the fire is contain and damage is fully assessed. Another deadly fire is burning just south of the bay area in monterey county. Weve learned there has been a death in the tassajara wildfire. It started yesterday near the town of jamesburg. Tonight it has burned more than a thousand acres and it has taken out ten homes. The monterey sheriffs says they found the body at the spot where they think that fire started. And it appears the death may have been a suicide. How the fire started, though, thats still under investigation tonight. The people who have been evacuated are waiting anxiously to see if their home is okay. Deputies were called to estart them this afternoon. Instead it was pushed back. It will happen tomorrow. Clark Charter School in sunnyvale just opened this year, but its closed now to student starting tomorrow. It wasnt until police were investigating the molestation charge and also child porn accusations against Jonathan Chow that the security lapse came to light. Police say shortly before 8 30 last night, a man fired his gun at a car on a nearby street. They tracked him to his home. The first officer thought the man had two hostages. But it turns out there were none. Police shot flash bombs into the house near capitol expressway and mclaughlin until the gunman surrendered and came out. The suspect has not been identified. The fair pay act would guarantee freedom from retaliation and discrimination if employees ask what everyone else earns. The legislation is said to start january 1. This morning it was comfortable, 50s and 60s outside. Look at these temperatures here, approaching the hottest point of the day there you see San Francisco 93 degrees at 2 00. And 100 degrees or close to it there in sunol. It is not often you see San Francisco, sunol and the trivalley seeing very little separation in temperatures. A and were still seeing 77 degrees right now in dublin. And which you often dont often see is still 76 degrees in San Francisco. No sign of any of that ocean air conditioning. And the lights still on at the coliseum. Perhaps still celebrating that raiders win. Right now 72 degrees. In oakland. And san jose 70s all across the board right now. 75 degrees. And yes, no hint of ocean air conditioning. What a you have instead is a slight north wind to offshore breeze. This pattern, though, by this time tomorrow night should begin to change. Were going see a stronger sea breeze pick up. But in the meantime, another spare the air today tomorrow. A a sign of strong High Pressure is poor air quality. And you see it especially out towards the east bay valleys. Ground level ozone and smoke pollution at times from the north bay into the valley fire and the tassajara fire, pushing some smoke into parts of the south bay for tomorrow morning. 50s and 60s to start, just like we had today, where you may see just a hint of cooling along the coast for the afternoon. But you see these numbers. San joses high today was 95 degrees. Pretty close to that again tomorrow. But south of downtown climbing in close to 100 degrees. So San Francisco 70 to some upper 80s in the forecast for tomorrow. North bay in the mid90s. And there you see trivalley temperatures again upper 90s to 100 degrees. So hot start to the week. Officially fall gets started very early wednesday morning, and right like clockwork were going to see some changes coming up tuesday into wed. First, much needed rain possible in Southern California. Buts that system clears on out, that will set the stage for a trough of low pressure by tuesday, really bringing some bigtime cooling. Almost 15 to 20 degrees cooler in spots between monday. Which is still looking fairly hot to much more comfortable temperatures approaching the middle part of the week there you see the temperature drop in san jose. Los gatos, a similar drop in temperatures. Coolest days of the week as we get into tuesday, wednesday, and thursday. Livermore still looks hot there you can see the temperatures cooling down. As we approach that first weekend of fall, numbers starting to come back up. But nowhere near as hot as the temperatures well still see tomorrow around San Francisco. For next weekend, the first weekend of fall now, we can see temperatures looking pretty comfortable. And here is the story for next weekend. It will be this time, or just past this time next sunday. The cat has been locked in all week. I was up until about 2 00, three income the morning just laying in our hotel room in ft. Bragg, wondering where do you restart. Reporter for the evacuees heading back home and seeing that welcome back sign, theyre telling me its a sigh of relief. For some of their neighbors, this never ending nightmare continues. There is homes and spots of land behind that. And those are gone too. So now, you know, its just going to be a a constant reminder for a while. Reporter the luxembourgs live up the road. They run a drilling business in their backyard. The fire burning their equipment. Their sons first car, and their neighbors home. That was thats their house. The fear is there that it might happen soon again. Reporter much like the stories we have heard all week that. Plan to turn this negative into a positive. Really hard. Nobody lake county has a bad rep. All i can say that as a neighborhood and a community, we are a family. Reporter that was pete serratos. Here in the bay area today, donating to help the fire victims never tasted so sweet. Woodys yogurt place in mill valley hosted a major fundraiser. They plan to donate 100 of the days sales to fire victims, especially those in middletown. Pretty soon, you know, the tv cameras will be gone. And then theyre going to look around and go whoa, what in the world just happened to us. I really felt they cant go up and help, but i can do this. Employees also did their part by donating their tips to those fire victims. Good for them. Well, there is also the butte fire that is burning in amador and calaveras counties. Tonight everyone is being allowed back into their homes. All evacuation orders have been lifted. The cleanup, though, going to take a while. The wildfire there destroyed more than 500 homes. It also burned through nearly 71 howe acres in all. Firefighters have a little more work to do on top of all that tonights containment sits at just 72 . The idea here is to see how prepared we are and what we can do in case there is a real world situation. And our response and well analyze that to see what we can do better, or how we did. Today Public Safety agencies from San Mateo County joined friends and family members at a formal tribute to fallen officers whose lives were cut short. Four counts of endangering Reporter Police say the suspect, Leslie Allen Merritt jr. , a 21yearold landscaper terrorized drivers along i10. He was arrested friday night at this walmart. All i have to say is im the wrong guy. I tried telling detectives that. My gun has been this the pawnshop for the last two months. I havent had access to weapons. Reporter his bond set at a million dollars. I could never afford that bond. I got two kids. Reporter police say merritts gun was linked to the first four of the highway shooting, and according to a court document, the gun was not in pawn status during the time of the shootings. They test fired. The test fired bullets were a match to bullet fragments from four casings over the last weekend in august. Reporter investigators say merritt sold the gun to this arizona pawnshop. Today the pawn manager didnt want to gone camera, but say they assisted with the investigation. His father says merritt is innocent. My son would honestly literally take the shirt off his back and give it to someone if he felt they were in need. Reporter meanwhile, another person of interest, oscar munoz arrested last week on unrelated charges has been released from jail, his charges dropped. The manhunt began three weeks ago. Robert mcdonald narrowly missed being struck while driving his bus. I want him to know he almost took me away from my wife and two kid. Reporter but there are still seven other incidents along i10 that need to be solved. A and the 50,000 reward for information and the warning for drivers will remain for now. Reporter so far farm dogs has helped a dodds farmers in missouri, nebraska, kansas, and iowa. Including a paraplegic, and another with a traumatic brain injury.
