leave the bay area tonight. reporting live in oakland, i'm cheryl hurd, nbc bay area news. >> thank you, cheryl. before he got to the fox theater, mr. obama attended an intimate dinner in piedmont tonight and raked in an estimated $1.5 million for the campaign. neighbors there lined the streets. what you are looking sat cell phone video of the motorcade on its way to the dinner party. real estate developer wayne jordan and his wife hosted the private fund-raiser at their home. now they are said to be two of the president's biggest financial supporters. >> whatever your political stripe is, you've got to be happy that obama has come to the bay area. he's thinking about us. and vp though it's a money stop, it's great. >> some guests paid about $38,000 a plate to attend. two of the guests, venture capitalist steve wesley and former energy department official matt rodgers who was part of the solyndra loan guarantee process. he juggled lemons at the dinner and one of the hosts gave the president a t-shirt that reads, quote, i heart oakland. the meal was pronounced by a world renowned chef in berkeley. the president is in san francisco at this hour where he'll spend the night at the hotel intercontinental. air force one will take off from sfo in the morning bound for washington state. we'll have complete coverage of his departure and the detours around it for your morning commute on "today in the bay" at 4:30 in the morning. today's fund-raisers along with four more tomorrow in oregon and washington are expected to raise more than $6 million for the president's campaign coffers. james holmes, the man accused of the mass theater shooting in colorado made his first court appearance today. the hearing gave victims' families their first chance to see holmes in person. with that orange/red hair. during his court appearance, the 24-year-old looked dazed, unfocused and even unclear of what was happening around him. jay gray is at the courthouse tonight with more on his appearance and reaction from some of the victims. it must have been so disturbing for the families to sit there and see him. >> reporter: yeah, jessica. very tough for those families and so many of the victims. some of the injured in the courtroom today along with victims, advocates. they say they were drawn into the courtroom because they felt like they had to see james holmholm holmes face to face. >> you have a right to remain silent. >> reporter: at times seem league on edge, james holmes sat before a judge today. the first time he's been seen publicly since his arrest. the face of evil for so many watching today, including family members of some of the victims. >> he does look fairly -- seems like demonic or something like that. >> reporter: his hair dyed bright red and pink fitting the description from reports that he told police he was the joker just after the massacre. he was disengaged looking at times like he was struggling to stay awake. >> reporter: formal charges will come next monday. prosecutors say a decision about the death penalty is still months away and that they will discuss the issue with survivors and families of the victims. >> that's a very long process. that impacts their lives for years. and so they will want to have and we will want to get their input before we make any kind of a decision on that. >> reporter: pleased the legal process has started, aurora's mayor says his shattered community must now figure out how to work through the tragedy emotionally. >> we have to find a way to go on. if we let this guy win, then we've made a horrible mistake. >> reporter: that will be toughest for families of the deceased and the 58 injured. more than 20 still in area hospitals, including farrah, in and out of consciousness. her mom worries how it may hurt her recovery when she learns the magnitude of the attack. >> she's asked me three times, is everyone else okay? >> reporter: most here are beginning to understand it will be a long time before anything is okay. now prosecutors say this is still an active and ongoing investigation and that the movie theater is still an active crime scene. in fact it will be locked down through at least friday as investigators continue to search for any forensic evidence that may still be there. outside the arapahoe county krourks i'm jay gray, nbc bay area news. >> the wounds of aurora so deep. san jose's quiet japan town neighborhood rocked this morning. a couple killed in their own home while their children slept. neighbors heard about eight gunshots and jumped out of bed on north seventh street in washington around 4:00 in the morning. witnesses reported seeing the gunman run away on foot. it was too dark, though, to get a description. the victim's family is convinced the shooter is a jealous ex-boyfriend. san jose investigators say they're still trying to identify a suspect and a motive in the interim, a neighbor who did not want to be on camera tells us about the couple's children. >> devastating. to me, i'm thinking, oh, these kids. they're going to be traumatized for life. >> the couple's oldest child is only eight years old and the youngest just 5. if you have any information on this crime, you are urged to call the san jose police department. new at 11:00 -- separated by hundreds of miles and by immigration law. three san jose children are without their own mother and father tonight. the parents now in tijuana after being deported. now the community is coming together to help and try andy unite the family. george kitiyama joins us with that story. and that's a tough situation to be in, george. >> a very emotional story. a mother and a father who came to the united states when they were just 8 years old. their children are all u.s. citizens. and tonight, the community is fighting to get this family back together. 14-year-old cesar llamas jr. is learning quickly how tough the world can be. >> most of the time all my friends are asking me, what happened. stuff like that. >> he and his two younger brothers, 12-year-old anthony and 8-year-old jesus are in san jose. their parents are in tijuana, separated from their children because of deportation. >> it's just hard not living here and stuff. >> reporter: the family was heading into san jose from their home in modesto on july 3rd when i.c.e. agents stopped them. their reason, for a previous traffic violation in minnesota 14 years earlier. >> mr. llamas was under the impression this was all taken care of. it was supposed to be resolved. to his surprise, this traffic violation in minnesota 14 years ago comes back in this obviously disproportionate way. >> reporter: the family says they had been deported last year when i.c.e. agents came to her home looking for cesar. cesar went down to mexico and both of them crossed back into the united states via the arizona desert. they say the only way cesar and rinalda can come back is by court order. >> so we believe this is a case of clear humanitarian relief needs to happen here. >> reporter: stan taylor went down to tijuana to interview them a couple of weeks ago on behalf of the justice for immigrants group. >> and it tore me up. it was very hard to watch what was happening to them and hear their story and thinking of these children here back in san jose. >> reporter: now the community is rallying around the family hoping to reunite these children with their parents. >> this is their country. they were raised as americans. they have come to know this country as americans. and then the traffic violation would send them away. this doesn't seem like the america that i was raised to believe. >> reporter: there is a fourth child. 20-month-old is with mom and dad tonight in tijuana. we talked to i.c.e. by phone earlier this afternoon and a spokesperson told me they will have more information about this case tomorrow. we also understand on thursday at 4:00, there will be a community briefing here at our lady of guadalupe parish in san jose. >> we'll continue to follow this story. coming up, the owners of a san jose casino will find out this week if they can open. but one man holds all the cards. find out who gets to decide if the casino matrix can open. and a bay area airline offering you the option to fly all the way to space. and astronaut sally ride, the first woman -- american woman in space coming up at 11:00 only on nbc bay area news. we'll hear from a bay area woman who knew ride long before she became a legend. i'm jeff ranieri in the weather center. breezy to windy on how low numbers could go in the seven-day forecast coming up. a former college football powerhouse reeling tonight. the ncaa hit penn state with a mountain of penalties for its inaction against former football assist aant coach jerry sandusk. the school will be fined $60 million and have every win the football team had from 1998 to 2011 wiped off the record books. in addition, the program will not be allowed to play in a bowl game for the next four seasons and will lose 40 scholarships over that time as well. >> taking away all those scholarships, taking away the bowl opportunity for four years is going to cripple them competitively for at least a decade. there are lots of ways they can do positive things going forward which they couldn't do if the football program was completely abolished. >> penn state's conference, the big ten, handed out its own punishment as well. it announced the school will not get its cut of money from bowl games. that means penn state will miss out on another estimated $13 million over four years. the big ten will instead donate that money to children's charities. no deal, no dealing. san jose's newest casino is built but it will not open. san jose officials had another hearing on the license that casino matrix has been trying to get since last year. the city's gaming administrator recommended the casino be allowed to open the first floor if certain restrictions are met. the top floors which would house four card room suites would not open until september. a spokesperson for the casino says they are working with the city to comply with all the recommendations. >> the card room is one of the largest taxpayers in the city of san jose and will be one of the largest employers as far as independently owned businesses in san jose. and that's important. the owners really take pride they'll be giving families good paying jobs, opportunities to work in this economy. hopefully helping the economy turn around. >> the final say now belongs to the chief of police who is expected to make his decision by the end of the week. virgin america wants to send one of its frequent flyers into space. your game? the bay-area based airline is revamping its rewards program. part of it is to send one frequent flier into space. the person who scores the most points between august 8th of this year and august 7th 2013 will score a flight on virgin galactic. virgin chief richard branson plans to start blasting tourists into space next year. america's first female astronaut tied dood. sally ride reached for the stars aboard the space shuttle "challenger." she may be gone but her work continues in the story only on nbc bay area news. >> geared up for the beginning of the sequence. >> reporter: sally ride shattered the glass ceiling in the 1970s when she joined nasa, paving the way for women to follow her out of earth's atmosphere. randy says she grew up with ride and knew she was going places. >> she was brilliant. she was brilliant even back -- you knew there was a spark about her even when she was young. >> reporter: ride had a lot of support but knew there were critics. >> i think there are were a few people that are -- that are waiting to see how i do. let me put it that way. >> reporter: ride proved nasa shouldn't be an all-men's club. america's first female astronaut was part of two space shuttle "challenger" missions giving american girls something new to dream about. the director of oakland's shibeau space center met ride when she supered the efforts to get girls into science. >> very smart. physicist and supercommitted to the cause of getting young women, getting girls motivated about science. but very sweet. >> reporter: after retiring, she taught at sanford, investigated the deadly "challenger" accident and started sally ride science, a program aimed at encouraging girls to reach for the stars. >> most important, it's the teachers and the schools holding the high expectations and getting the message to the students. the girls as well as the boys that we expect you to do well. >> reporter: she started the ghork 2001. her science camp continues at stanford and uc berkeley. >> sadly, girls need a little bit of extra help because socially and culturally, there are still barriers to pursuing careers in science and math. >> america's first woman astronaut. >> reporter: barriers ride blasted through. >> nasa issued a statement on ride's death saying nasa lost a great role model and the nation lost a great hero. as a mother two of girls, my girls admire sally ride so much. so sad coastline. otherwise, the big thing on these current temperatures is how cold it is. right now 55 in santa rosa. 55 in novato. some of the spots could be dropping into the 40s for tonight and 61 currently in san francisco. let's take you out to the live hd sky camera network. here it is. the bay bridge. a lot of traffic on that lower deck. the san francisco giants today. maybe a lot of people going to and from there across the bridges. out here at the shark tank, very quiet on the streets of san jose. let's bring you back into the weather boards. what you'll find here for our tuesday is we'll have patchy fog. a tloifts right up against the immediate coastline. and the thing to focus in on for tuesday is the fact that numbers are going to continue to go down for us. even that seven-day forecast. going to be somewhat erratic. we'll see numbers go down and then back up. the thing on the satellite loop to really position in on is the fact there isn't anything out here. all of that activity is way up to the north. high pressure sitting offshore. but the problem is all that hot air this weekend is too far out there to really impact us. so we'll just get a small slice of this cooler air just off to the north. and also the winds will position themselves that we think of the immediate coastline. the marine layer will stay put for the next 48 hours. at the coast, that will bring us 50s and 60s. for the interior valleys, close to 100 this past weekend throughout livermore, pleasanton, walnut creek. they'll be dropping into the 70s and 80 pps much more cooler throughout tuesday and wednesday. coldest weather in the north bay. 51 in santa rosa. maybe a few isolated 40s into wine country. and daytime highs on tuesday, dropping. as we've been mentioning, a little cooler. 83 in san jose. 79 at palo alto. don't need a jacket. 86 in walnut creek. 86 in danville. 85 in dublin. back by the bay, makes the 70s a pleasant day. 68 in san francisco. 80 in santa rosa. just four days left until the olympics begin. coverage here on nbc bay area. some of the best weather not only in weeks but in months for the opening ceremonies. temperatures in the 70s and sun and clouds on friday. our three-day forecast has numbers dropping off into thursday. numbers will eventually be going back up into saturday and sunday. mid to upper 80s here across the bay and possibly a few low 90s. may get a little beach weather mixed in there by sunday. 70s not too hot but, you know, we see people out in bathing suits in 70-degree weather for sure. at least i have. >> letteall it's called the budweiser good sport designated driver challenge. the dodgers and giants are also participating. they pledge for them not to drink alcohol at the game and promises a safe ride home. undisclosed conditional draft pick. murphy was drafted by the raiders in the fourth round in 2009. in three seasons he caught 90 balls, including six for touchdowns. that will do it for tonight. by be right back. check out the trouble a teenager in utah got herself into. she crashed her mother's car and landed in a very tight spot. police say the car jumped a curb, flew over a set of bushes and dropped down an embankment before settling at a 45-degree angle on a patio. the car was wedged in there so tightly it had to be removed by a crane. the 16-year-old walk away with only a spranked ankle. investigators are blaming the crash on distracted driving. i want to bet you she's going to be much, much, much more focused once her mother gets a hold of her. going to be very clear to her how to pay attention. jeff has a final look at the forecast. >> it's going to be clear and also temperatures warming up as we head throughout tuesday. mid to upper 80s inland. for wednesday and thursday, we'll see temperatures decrease. and then by this upcoming weekend on saturday and sunday, we expect some upper 80s to near 90 degrees. by next monday, we expect a few 90s here but all in all, not a bad seven-day forecast considering how hot it was this past weekend for a lot of you in the east and the south bay. also for those early morning commuters. if you are getting up 5:00, 6:00
