This happened yesterday not too far from the cal state east bay campus. Christy smith is live near that campus and also how this escalated to a police shooting. Reporter yeah, thats right. We spoke with that truck owner, and he says hes just glad that he wasnt hurt in all this. It happened quickly. His truck was taken. He got into another vehicle and was about a car length away when that suspect pulled a gun. I thought i heard my truck start up, so then i went out to see what was going on. Reporter stacey was visiting a friend in hayward around 5 00 yesterday evening when someone got in his truck and drove off. He jumped in the friends truck to follow. I pulled up to the back and said, hey, thats my truck. And he said, so and so you and pulled out a gun and shot. And i went, oh. And then he took off and i didnt bother to follow after that. Just dialed 911. He was not hit and stopped near hayward and civic avenue. I was thinking about following him, but maybe just follow him and find out where hes at and call the police. Reporter this is a picture of the truck from a few months ago following a finder bender. After it was stole own saturday, Police Spotted it and say the suspect crashed into cars injuring one person. The guy then drove at the officers. One fired. The suspect was not hit, ran away and was taken into custody. He simply just got in and had some tools geared down and took off. We thought it was his truck. Reporter a neighbor pulled up as the car was being stolen and said the woman dropped the suspect off in a silver car. This isnt the first car theft there. My sons wife got her car stolen last month, or three weeks ago. Reporter police say they dont recommend following, rather call the police and give the last location of the car. And they say theyll take it from there. His truck is totaled, and hes just glad hes not hurt. Glad i didnt get shot. Reporter Hayward Police tell me right now they have one person in custody described as a 26yearold man. They describe him as a transient. And new video now of a frightening accident at menlo college. A huge branch snapped from an oak tree crashing down here on a crowd of people yesterday afternoon. Several people were hit by the branch. Two of them were taken to the hospital. We had one witness say that there was about two seconds from the time they heard cracking until the time the limb hit the ground. There wasnt a lot of time to react for a couple of people. Juan Francisco Lopez is accused of shooting and killing steinle along a San Francisco pier in 2015. Sanchez is an undocumented immigrant and stole a gun from an agents car. Investigators say the person who called 911 spoke spanish and had a difficult time giving dispatchers all of the necessary information. Witnesses there say a teenage girl in the group used pepper spray and tried to rob one of the passengers on the train before running out of the car. The passengers were not injured. A lack of riders means three fewer bus routes for samtrans. That starts today. The agency serks limninating routes 11, 43 and 89. Reporter so she started black girls code. Exposing young women of color to the opportunities in tech while at the same time teaching them the skills theyd need to take advantage of them. At the time, kimberly dreamed of it getting big. And since then, it certainly has. This twoweek summer camp in oakland run by one of 11 black girls code chapters across the country, plus one in south africa reaching 8,000 girls. And what about the girl who inspired black girls code in the first place . Well, kai is now on staff mentoring the next generation. Thats whats exciting for me because its never going to stop. Like im going to keep coming back to volunteer and to help out because its important and i know how important it was for me personally.
