Im richard lui. Another blow to the iconic jersey shore. The community is still recovering from Hurricane Sandy and now a huge setback. Thursday a monster fire engulfed and destroyed some 50 businesses along the boardwalk at seaside park. Smoke and flames could be seen for miles. Wind gusts of up to 40 Miles Per Hour kept the fire going into the night. This blaze included many explosions likely from fuel supplies. This morning, the flames are under control. You are looking at live aerials this morning, 7 00 a. M. Local time, 400 firefighters called in to battle this last night. Funtown you can see here only in ashes. This is the same area devastated less than a year ago by Hurricane Sandy. Just this summer work crews completed repairs to the boardwalk from the storm surge. Governor Chris Christie was blunt when describing his thoughts. When i got my first full briefing when i left trenton to come here, i said to my staff, i feel like i want to throw up. I know how i feel, i can only imagine how residents and Business Owners in this area are feeling. My heart goes out to them. Look, that water has been relentless ripping away not only streets but entire communities in some places. Right now it shows no signs of slowing down. Driving rain continues with raging floodwaters in boilulder part of a system for 24 hours. Sirens wailed and warnings sounded thursday as the water continued to rise. Weve lost roads. Weve lost bridges. Weve lost homes, cars. And we are just now beginning to try to assess the scope of the damage. Reporter emergency crews rushed into areas cut off by water and floating debris. Dive team rescued drivers after this bridge was swallowed from swollen floodwater. Neighbors turned to each other for help getting to high ground. The water was raging like the Colorado River through our house. Reporter in some areas the water led to massive rock slides blocking rescue teams from stranded cars and communities. At least three people are dead. Officials worry like the water, that number could grow. We know that weve lost lives. We anticipate that as the day goes on that we may find that weve lost others. Reporter the deadly storms have already dumped more than 7 inches of rain. This is insane. Reporter unfortunately still not over.
