part. showers headed our way. you can see the overcast sky above. it will block your view of the super moon. as we head through the day today, showers will continue to stream to the south. expecting the bulk of the moisture to come through this morning. give yourself extra time. we have yellow embedded in this green with heavy pockets of rain. the showers are starting to move south, right now starting to impact los gatos, on their way to san jose the next 10 to 15 minutes. then we'll start to see a little bit of a break, on-and-off light activity through the second half of the day. we're tracking these showers as they develop. let's check the drive and see if there's any impact so far with our own mike inouye. >> thank goodness, not just yet. as we've been talking about, first rain in a long time we often see a lot of single car spin-outs earlier in the commute. none reported just yet. we have reports of a stall heading towards treasure island. i'll be watching and i don't see anything going on. the bridge correction may have moved up quickly. a smooth drive through the area, where we did see green pointedover, our road weather index was registering wet roads through 580, concord, highway 4, 232, the mist is in the air. a new crash in pleasant hill. no slowing yet. people from right here in the bay area to the east coast all waiting to hear the u.s. supreme court's decision on two same-sex marriage cases. the court must issue rulings this week on california's proposition eight and the federal defense of marriage act. "today in the bay's" cheryl hurd live in washington, d.c. she's got all the latest details. cheryl, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the wait continues here in washington, d.c. a lot of people are monitoring the situation electronically, keeping their ipads close, keeping their iphones close. a lot of people are here. there are about a hundred people lined up outside waiting to get in because the doors have not opened yet. it has been a long road here to the u.s. supreme court when it comes to gay marriage. in 2008 california voters voted 52% in favor of prop 8. that was the initiative banning gay marriage. you may remember some religious leaders in the african-american community were outspoken against gay marriage. we caught up with ben jellis, the president of the naacp nationally says he hopes it's struck down because they're both civil rights issues. >> these are all important civil rights cases. the reality is that you're talking about different types of oppression. we all experience them differently, oppression based on color, gender, sexual orientation. at the end of the day, these are all important civil rights cases. >> reporter: if the supreme court decides to strike down proposition 8, gay couples could get married in 25 days. gay marriage is legal in 12 states including here in washington, d.c. we're going to stay put and will have an update in about half hour. reporting live in washington, d.c., i'm cheryl hurd, "today in the bay." cheryl, appreciate that. as soon as the rulings does come down, nbc news will break in with a special report and we'll bring you live coverage in the bay area and washington, d.c. through out the morning and during our 11:00 broadcast here on nbc bay area. for continuing coverage, you can also visit our website, nbcbayarea.com. simply search prop 8. breaking news in the south bay. sunnyvale firefighters are looking out for hot spots this morning as a mobile home went up in flames. it happened on east el camino real not too far from the sunken gardens golf course. "today in the bay's" bob redell is live on the scene with an update on the investigation and pretty alarming video as well, bob. >> reporter: good morning, marla. the sunnyvale fire department within the past few minutes left the scene of the trailer park. the fire took place beyond the fence on el camino. the call came in just before 3:00 this morning. when the fire department arrived, this is what they found. one trailer camper engulfed in flames, at least half of it was on fire. it took them about 20 minutes to put this fire out. once the fire was out, there was still the issue of electricity. pg&e had a line that was down and was still hot. so they had to wait for the electrician to come out to shut that down. the reason why they needed to get into the trailer itself was to make sure there was no one inside. they had a report that someone lived there but might not be at home at the time but they had to verify, they did get a check inside. fortunately no one inside. the person who lives there has been accounted for. they weren't staying at home at the time. it was a one-alarm fire. no one was hurt. the trailer camper was destroyed. no other surrounding structures affected. live in sunnyvale, bob redell, "today in the bay." san jose police looking for a group of suspected gang members who attacked and robbed a couple. this all happened during the first weekend of a major police crackdown on gang violence. "today in the bay's" christie smith live at police headquarters with all the greatest details. christie, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, jon. 40 additional san jose police officers were out this weekend for just this type of thing, a new gang suppression program unveiled on friday. but at the same time a couple was attacked. they were robbed and now san jose police are looking for these suspected gang members. this happened sunday afternoon in broad daylight on lido street. the suspects confronted the couple and then attacked the man and took off running. this comes as police are rolling out a three-phase plan to crack down on gang violence with more patrols in june and july and then a gang suppression unit starts in august. police say when you increase visibility, you'll see deterren deterrence. here is how the assault happened. >> an argument ensued. they ultimately took the victim's purse from her. when the male tried to intervene, they assaulted him and he suffered a head injury. both the male and final maim were transported to a local hospital. >> reporter: their conditions are unknown at this point. we spoke with the youth anti-gang coordinator who says the suppression efforts have worked in the past, but sometimes they push gangs under ground and it ends up being a temporary solution. kids are still being recruited into these gangs and what's needed oftentimes is a police and community effort at the same time. as i mentioned, 40 additional officers out in hot spots this month. then next month that increases to 64. reporting live in san jose, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> christie smith, thank you very much. it's 5:37. before you go anywhere, don't forget the umbrella. meteorologist christina loren is tracking some showers. >> indeed i am. indeed i am. 5:38. good monday morning to you. we've got quite a bit of shower activity pushing the the south. if you're heading um the peninsula and you work in san francisco sand heading up in san jose this morning. a lot of rainfall along the peninsula. let's talk about where we're headed. we'll see one round of rain in the morning. it's all going to push through, about 9:00, 10:00 rolls around we should be nice and dry. on-and-off showers very light, intermittent throughout the day. tonight through tomorrow morning the bulk of the moisture will push through. no need for the heavy coat this morning. temperatures right around 60 degrees. look at all the mid 60s in livermore, gilroy, 63 in sunnyvale. as we head throughout the day today, no flight delays out of sfo. we'll let you know if this changes. it is a back-to-business monday. let's check the drive right now. mike is on the job. >> on the peninsula, looking at the approach over the san mateo bridge. we don't see anything dramatic. we do see the gray in the skies. christina's radar is showing that rain is an issue along the peninsula. we urge you to be careful and watch the speeds. both the san mateo and the dumbarton bridges, 92 and 84 respectively are moving smoothly. south 101 around popular, a car with a flight tire on the shoulder. doesn't sound like any much. as we move to the east bay, we look at the green as well. a quick look at oakland. 880 past the coliseum, the conditions, glowing lights there, mist in the air and slowing back to the traffic. we're looking over here toward the tri-valley where we have the road weather index registering as potential wet weather. 580, 680 through san ramon. the wind advisory a different issue from chp through the altamont pass. here is the question. where in the world is edward snowden? the man who says he leaked information about the surveillance program on the run and trying to throw u.s. agents off his trail. the latest on the search for the former nsa employee coming up next. at 5:42, new this morning, edward snowden is on the move and trying to throw people off his trail. he was reportedly supposed to be on a flight to cuba, but just over an hour ago we learned he was not on board. "today in the bay's" tracie potts is live in washington with the latest word on his whereabouts. tracie, what are you hearing? >> reporter: we're hearing from our producer who was on the flight that he was not on there. she didn't see him when they closed the doors and took off after some delay and confusion at the airport. is he in the wind at this point? is he in russia? did he find some other way out? is he not going via cuba, perhaps venezuela which we also heard? bottom line, edward snowden is nowhere to be found. we understand he's trying to get to ecuador. the foreign minister of ecuador say they are considering his application for asylum. they say he's being persecuted. they question whether or not treason is an appropriate way to describe what he's done, releasing this top secret information about government surveillance which they call a human rights abuse against the entire world. interestingly, though, the foreign minister also saying when it comes to snowden that they're in respectful contact and that's the way he described it, with russia. the u.s. has been leaning on russia this morning. we heard from secretary of state kerry. we heard from the national security council saying, look, we returned some of your high-level criminals to you, seven of them kerry said. we expect you to reciprocate. at this point it's highly possible he's still in russia. we don't know for sure. we're tracking to see where he pops up next. >> a tense situation. tracie potts, thanks so much. right now we're keeping a very close eye on south africa where former president nelson mandela's health is unfortunately getting worse. this is brand new video this morning of the hospital in pretoria where mandela is being cared for. south african officials say the 94-year-old's condition became critical over the past 24 hours. mandela has been in the hospital for more than two weeks now with a reoccurring lung infection. funeral services for actor james gandolfini are set for this thursday in morning city. his body was flown back to the u.s. late last night. according to new york authorities it's being keld at a funeral home in new jersey. the 51-year-old star of "the sopranos" died last week in rome. he was scheduled to appear at a film festival in sicily which paid tribute to him on saturday. opening statements are set today for the murder trial of george zimmerman. the former neighborhood watch volunteer pleaded not guilty to second degree murder in the shooting death of 17-year-old trayvon martin. moments ago martin's mother addressing media outside the courtroom asking for justice for her son. she says she'll be in that courtroom for this entire trial. zimmerman said he shot martin in self-defense. if convicted on all charges, zimmerman could spend the rest of his life in prison. the senate will hold a key vote today on its immigration reform bill. senators will vote on the border surge amendment, doubling the number of border patrol agents to 40,000 and guarantee the completion of a 700-mile-long fence along america's southern border. in all, 60 votes are required for this particular amendment known as the border surge amendment we're seeing that happen. as we watch our live cameras, i saw quite a bit of slowing over the last five or ten minutes. things have started to smooth out after that first burst came. 5:48 i should be very exact. a live look, we look at the maps with our live sensors and we see some slowing, 680 towards 880. speeds coming down into the upper 50s. not a major concern, but that volume is building for your northbound routes throughout the south bay. a little slowing from north 87 from time to time coming into downtown. construction crews clearing from the 280/880 interchange, but they may be there. a distraction, but flow not a big concern right now. peninsula, an easy drive as well. look at the green all over these hills here, areas north of san mateo as well. dumbarton and san mateo bridges moving nicely. the green all over the area that indicates possibilities of slick conditions as you come out of the altamont pass, the tri-valley and 680 through the san ramon valley. live look outside all right, mike, thanks. in a few minutes, more traffic news for you. new car pool lanes officially open form south bay commuters. it's already opened. it opened at 5:00. new hov lane restrictions went into effect for interstate 880 between highway 101 in san jose and 237 in milpitas, the $70 million project added car pool lane to the southbound on-ramp from brokaw. share engineers will start timing where the backups have been snarled during the entire project. a tough night for a lot of people. the central coast went dark for several hours overnight after a widespread power outage affected more than 145,000 customers. the outage happened at about 9:30 last night, stretching from the beach down of dam brie yeah to santa maria county. the outage forcing the police department to switch to generator power. extra officers were called in to patrol the streets and respond to several reports of vandalism. pg&e telling us equipment failure at a substation caused this outage. power was fully restored at 2:00 this morning. berkeley's famed chez panisse will officially reopen to the public this morning. the restaurant has been under construction for almost four months after a fire damaged part of the interior in early march. last friday you may recall chef alice waters held a private fund-raising dinner for charity to celebrate the reopening. chez panisse opens for lunch at allowed some details about personal information to leak out. you might roll your eyes and say what on facebook was private anyway. in this case the data may have been private. what happened to us, if you connected your phone or computer's aress book to facebook so you could download pictures into your address book, some of the details in your address book were uploaded to facebook. they resided on the service, coupled have been accessible to other friends. for instance, marla, if i had your personal e-mail on my phone which i don't tell many people about, they could have been uploaded
