Christianne Klein uber and lyft have been operating at the airport since late last year and both companies are growing exponentially. Just last month more than 230 thousand people were picked up or dropped off at the airport by back in december of last year. Today the clark county commissioners met for an update on licenses and fees. Both uber and lyft are paying the maximum fee per year 75 thousand dollar annually for a license for more than 7000 drivers. Currenly both companies have less than half as many drivers on their payrolls. But that is changing rapidly. Its a level of growth that even surprised the panel. yeah thats incredible. I mean the growth is amazing. Companies have aspirational goals to ultimately get the total number of drivers past that 7 thousand mark that clearly is not the case today but i would expect that if we were to come back a year from now well see more drivers more licensed drivers Christianne Klein the department of aviation has brought in more than 3 Million Dollars in revenue so far from uber and lyft. The clark county director of Business Licenses said theyre trying to make it easier to handle the volume of new drivers in the county. Beginning in october theyre adding a drivers component to the online Application Form where applicants will be able to apply and pay for their license online. Taxis are charged a 2 dollar pick up fee that is passed on to the consumer while uber and lyft are required to pay a 2 dollar 45 cent pick up or drop off fee. Denise Valdez lyft and uber . Most are low income Single Parents and military veterans. Many of them also have student debt but according to Linda Montgomery of the Learning Center, they may qualify for loan forgiveness. Students who have completed the coursework but havent received a diploma. Do not qualify.
