>> and i'm ken wayne. giffords led a crowd who attended a candlelight vigil tonight on the pledge of allegiance. a year later she's still going through rehab. more than 100 people gathered in yerba buena garden. debra villalone was there as survivors of shootings described their injuries. >> it was five of us shot that day. three five-year-olds and myself. >> reporter: a stranger sprayed a jewish community center in southern california with a semi automatic weapon. as in tucson she says, it can happen any where. >> people often say to me you were in the wrong place at the wrong time. and that's simply not true. i was in the right place and it was the right time. >> reporter: the time is past due activists say to strengthen national gun laws as they mark tucson's anniversary, another nears. the 20th for 101 california. san francisco's worse mass shooting in which a gunman roamed a high rise law firm, killing eight, wounding six. >> i was there that day and it really changed my life. >> reporter: amidst the outrage, california with the toughest gun laws in the nation still seeing carnage. last year alone, many murderers. whatever the circumstances those who died like reliving the experience all over again. that's nothing something we want for anybody. >> reporter: across the country there were 70 observances like this one to remember tucson's loss. we're live in san francisco, debra villalon, ktvu channel 2 news. >> reporter: in tucson it was a time of reflection for many. a time to honor the six people who died and as casey steagel reports, it was a time to commemorate those lost. >> reporter: the city of tucson is still trying to move beyond the four of a year ago. gabrielle giffords showing her gratitude in the very spot her life was forever changed. the congresswoman now greeting people outside the safeway supermarket saturday with a surprise visit. she doesn't remember the attack but her husband says gabby has gratitude for her life. >> it's a sad event but i think it's a marker in time. >> reporter: others still haunted remembering the echo of that gunfire. the roar of emergency choppers, all reminders of an attack at a meet and greet that left six dead and 13 wounded. >> there was an eerie quiet that morning. there was chaos but no panic. everyone was doing something critically useful and they were doing it calmly and quietly. >> reporter: the shooting gravely wounded the congresswoman. giffords was shot in the head and spent months in the hospital. she returned to congress in august 2011. >> the return of our colleague who is the personification of courage. >> reporter: and tonight, a candlelight vigil bringing a light to a city that seemed so dark just one year ago. >> the people who lost their lives, you know on that day, i look at them as heros. this was not a random event. >> reporter: prosecutors say a college drop out turned his gun on the crowd. jared lee laughner fired 32 rounds from his nine millimeter piston. he remains in a mental hospital, forcibly medicated until he's fit to stand trial. president obama called giffords where he called him an inspiration to his own family but to americans across the country. in tucson arizona, casey stegall, fox news. the s.w.a.t. team was on the scene outside a house on elizabeth court in north livermore. they were reportedly searching for 24-year-old eric osenderos. he was wanted for several parol violations. parts of the street were closed and neighbors evacuated. osenderos surrendered about four hours later. there's growing concern in normally tranquil walnut creek about night life violence. jade hernandez is there with the story of yet another street fight that erupted at a club. >> reporter: violence erupted on the street early this morning. these incidents keep popping up all over walnut creek month after month. walnut creek police found people fighting piled on top of each over. >> one or two people on the bottom, we later found out those two gentlemen were the victims of a robbery. >> reporter: robberies police say took place inside shiro restaurant creates a ruckus about 1:00 in the morning. >> we went under new management in the new year, this is the first incident in over a year both in or around our property and public domain. >> reporter: other night clubs have seen violence in recent months including a fight just last weekend. other accomplishments have seen night life grow here, a reason the gm thinks problems are popping up. >> we have a young graphic demographic area. this has been called the -- what do you call the marina district. >> it's a pretty solid, 20 to 25 group. >> reporter: still most young patrons don't worry. >> i feel very safe here. i feel like it's a safe area to walk around at night. whether i'm by myself, other girls. >> reporter: all the people arrested are from out of town. including pittsburg, san francisco, oak land and police are looking into whether shiro night lounge violated any city ordnances. jade hernandez, ktvu news. pennsylvania assemblyman jerry hill is expected to unveil two new laws including pipeline safety. he says the legislation will hold utilities and regulators the áf. it would require the regulators to consider safety testing when installing new lines. claudine wong talked to witnesses about what they saw -- >> reporter: morning boards replaced windows of this downtown oakland starbucks. inside signs warned customers not to touch what's left of smashed out windows during last night's protests. >> we have a beautiful city. and it only takes those actions to make people think that we're a bad spot,. >> reporter: oakland police told us at least a couple of patrol cars had tires slashes. witnesses say when tensions rose, police responded. >> they did announce, please, if you don't go back to wherever you live we'll have to arrest you. so please go back to wherever you came from. >> they may have to use force which may result in injury. they made the announcement several times. >> reporter: at least six people were arrested. and some protesters were injured. this damage may have come in the wake of this occupy protest. but most people we talked to today said they don't blame the occupy movement. >> pretty much the occupiers are pretty peaceful for the most part. >> it's unfortunate that it happens. but that it shouldn't you know sort of stain the ideas of the movement. >> reporter: witnesses also say watching last night was like watching a dance with two sides that have heard the music before. >> the police have a great deal of restraint. the demonstrators knew how to deal with police. seems like these two sides have negotiates before and knew how to go through the drill. >> reporter: and will likely go through it again. a 13-year-old boy is in the hospital tonight after being trapped under a boulder in pacifica. the accident happened around 5:00 last night at a cliff side near palmetto avenue. the boy was climbing on the rocks when a large boulder came lose and crushed his legs. it took firefighters about an 1- 1/2 to clear the boulder and save the boy. he is now in the hospital with serious injuries. news tonight that a gull with a fishing lure in his beak was spotted. if you see it, call a rescue group so that it can be rescued. the market street cooperative closed due to pressure on the building's landlord by federal authorities. a letter from the u.s. attorney to the landlord said the building could be forfeited as well as any rent money received unless the dispensary ended operations by tomorrow. 49ers may want to save up if you want to go to a game at the proposed new stadium in santa clara. starting tomorrow season ticket packages for the venue will go on sale. and listen up folks they do not come cheap. the right to own club seats will cost between 20 and $30,000. that does not include season tickets which will cost you up to $3,500 extra. a few seats near the 50-yard line will cost you $80,000 with an additional $3,700. the new stadium will cost about a billion dollars to build and is set to open in 2014. prices at the pump are back up again over the past three weeks. the national average for a gallon of regular has gone up to $3.36. due to high crude oil prices, drivers here in have to pay more. in san francisco drivers pay an average of $3.74 a gallon. in oakland $3.68. in san jose people can fill up -p for $3.66 a gallon. a series of fires is under investigation and why firefighters say it could have been much worse. down the is good. really, really good. juicy as hell (beep). fire officials are trying to figure out what caused this massive fire in southern california. started around 9:30 last night in a hardware store. more than 100 firefighters put out the flames. officials say the fire cost $275,000 worth of damage to that store. no one was hurt. a firefighter in the north bay says it was lucky no one was hurt in a rash of a fire in one neighborhood. they are now searching for a suspected arsonist. >> reporter: the leaves are dry, the grass is brown and the trees bare. this is not a good place to light a fire. but that's exactly what happened last night in the neighborhood near redwood boulevard and sea crest in nevado. >> what we're looking at is arson fires. >> reporter: more than a dozen fires in one location during a six hour period last night. nevadofirefighters put out a dumpster fire. a minutes later they put out a wildfire. firefighters were near by lynn wood hill park putting down 15 small fires. an arson investigation is under way. this black patch on the ground is where one of the overnight fires was set. its relatively small size, but you can see it's 20 feet away from the nearest home. >> that's scary arm neighbors were lucky there was no wind last night. the fires never threatened any homes. >> these structures would have all gone up. because they're all wood. they're not metal frames by any mean. >> reporter: residents know this has been an especially dry winter. >> it's pretty scary, all of my friends that are firefighters are really expecting a dry harsh fire season this year. >> reporter: and residents say a prank like this could have serious consequences. in nevado, allie rasmus. san francisco firefighters are looking into what caused an apartment fire. the flames were contained to just one room and was under control in about 15 minutes. no one was hurt. vallejo is getting ready to reopen a fire station that closed when the city went bankrupt. station 25 on mini drive in north vallejo was the victim of budget cuts more than three years ago. it was recently reopened on an intermittent basis based on staffing. but fire investigators are interviewing potential new hires and are hoping to have the station opened full time by summer. the republican presidential hopefuls crank up the criticism today of front runner mitt romney as tuesday's primary in new hampshire draws near. ken pritchett is in the granite state. he caught up with the candidates as well as the front runner. >> reporter: whether it was romney, ron paul or newt gingrich, they tended to move out from the big stills taking their campaign to small towns. and we followed them to quaint places like rochester where mitt romney held a town hall. >> this is the second time i've met him here in rochester. >> reporter: california state senator tony strickland is here to support the romney campaign by talking to voters one by one. >> in california it's more of a media driven campaign with a 30 second or 15 second commercials on the radio, tv, direct mail. here it's more retail. they want to hear eye to eye. >> reporter: mitt romney is enjoying a healthy lead in the polls along likely new hampshire voters. the race is seen as one for second or third place with ron paul leading that pack. huntsman is gaining momentum. as tuesday approaching, many voters remain undecided, expectations in the granite state are often offendous. >> you sound like you still don't know what you're going to do. >> not yet. still a little undecided. >> reporter: newt gingrich will have a busy day tomorrow along with the other candidates. rick perry and santorum spent the day in south carolina. santorum returns to new hampshire tomorrow. in new hampshire, ken pritchett, ktvu channel 2 news. as ken mentioned the two no show candidates are getting a head start on the south carolina caucus. rick santorumm brought his campaign to greensboro. he asked voters to pick a truly conservative candidate. he said mitt romney is too liberal. you will find updates on our website. the california disclose act would mandate full disclosure of those responsible for funding campaign advertising. and prevent major contributors from hiding behind generic names. one of the big backers is the california claim association. >> most people don't know who are paying for these campaign ads. and they are hiding behind names. growing aggravation on a washington state army base as more than 100 soldiers remain on lock down after someone made off with sensitive military equipment. no weapons are reported missing from the joint based lewis mccord. but a flier says hundreds of pieces of rifle equipment are. no word on the value of the missing equipment. the lock down started wednesday. soldiers are restricted to barracks and dining areas but they are allowed visits from family members some of whom were questioning the lock down. >> you expect soldiers to be outstanding
