Ktvu news actually interviewed this same suspect 15 years ago after he was arrested for a string of fires along public trails in the south bay. Good evening im frank somerville. And im gasia mikaelian. Heres what we know about him, his name is Patrick William brennan. Police say they have connected brennan to this huge warehouse fire last thursday. It was the largest of the 12 fires that was set over the period of five days. Right now brennan is only charged with two of those fires but the numbers could go up. A number of surveillance videos that show a man setting fires was key to identifying him along with the work of a midnight duty sergeant who searched through an arsonist data base. When were able to find arsonists who live in the area it was definitely a good lead. Reporter when they caught up with brennan he surrendered peacefully and is cooperative. Police say they picked up brennan at his mobile home park. That is just blocks from the scene of one of the fires. Police say they had him under surveillance since sunday night. We spoke to one of his neighbors who described him as weird. He would just go to the store and thats it. He didnt talk to nobody or anything. This is the sketch released by investigators. Some say the sketch resembles a younger man. Police said they were looking for a man 25 to 40 years old. We have continuing Team Coverage on this story. Cristina rendon tells us, that even with brennan under custody, they still are terrorized. Reporter he didnt want to show his face but hes breathing a sigh of relief even though he couldnt last night. I was quite joyous he had been caught. But i was wired all night. I was up all night. It was a different type of sleeplessness. Reporter jim has no comment but says hes sad for brennan. I was like oh thank god they found this man. Reporter she and her husband vince were rescued from their home. Now theyre trying to rescue their future. They set up a website to collect donations. But they say brennan needs help too. Hes not going to kill anybody anymore because they have him in jail. But they still have to figure out why he did this. People who are heinous need to be locked up for a long time i think the uneasiness remains for some time. We look around a little more, and were a little more careful about what were doing. Thats not necessarily a bad thing. Reporter jeff says in time the smell of smoke will fade, the house will be repaired, but part of his soul will stay scared. You cant put veneer on your soul. The hurt and the that a fellow human being could do that to you. Reporter and jeff says the Silver Lining in all of this is how its brought the Community Closer Together from people rescuing each other to those neighborhood watches. It has definitely transform thirddegree neighborhood and he hopes that his residence transformed this neighborhood and he hopes that his residents can sleep tonight. Now to a part of a story you will see only on 2. We searched through the ktvu archives and discovered that brennan had been on the 10 00 news before. We sat down with him for a jailhouse interview. And then just like now he was under arrest for arson. Reporter who knows what a 48yearold Patrick William brennan is like now. But when i spoke to him, the 33 yearold was a tormented young man who seemed confused himself about a string of arsons he pled guilty to. What did he want people to think about him then. That im no crazed maniac out there trying to destroy their lives. Who are you . I dont know, im a fairly nice person. I guess im somebody with problem who needs help. Reporter he had already been arrested. And like now, his targets were remote. I guess it was a stress reliever. I was hitting areas that i didnt think were going to burn as bad as they did. Reporter now possibly the warehouse fire last week, his background will be examined begin. Anything in your background that you think will provide a clue. I dont know. Ive been diagnosed with severe learning disabilities and im dyslexic. In san jose, robert handa, ktvu channel 2 news. San jose mayor chuck reed gave credit to the Police Officer and firefighters who helped track down the suspects. In the statement, mayor reed also thanked members of the community. Governor brown is expected to declare a major drought. The governor has been under pressure to make that declaration. He says the seriousness of the water situation cannot be discounted. He said that an Emergency Declaration will not make it rain and if it doesnt rain soon the state of california will be in a lot of trouble. Other actions may include water rationing and a request for federal aid. Marin county is tapping into it Emergency Water supply. Today the marin municipal district will begin pumping water into its water Distribution System which serves 100,000 customers in marin county. Police say the man believed to be in his 40s entered the girls locker room, exposed himself to five cheer leaders then left. Parents tonight say since police knew about the incident, they should be here to answer questions. I also find it unacceptable that i do not see a representative of south San Francisco police department. Is any other parent upset with that . A Drug Task Force is announcing one of the biggest drug busts in county history. Officers say operation crystal crystal lens resulted in the arrest of 17 gang members of the norteno gang. An 18th member is still at large. They also confiscated 950,000 in cash. A number of high capacity weapons and several vehicles allegedly used for drug activity. Firefighters in richmond say when they arrived at a house fire this evening they found a marijuana growing operation. The fire was reported about 5 00 p. M. In a Single Family home in the 3500 block of center street. Richmonds fire chief told us when fire firefighters got inside they found the marijuana and more inside. The house had some electrical issues but invest investigators will have to determine if thats the cause. The fire burned in the hills near the Coastal Community of san gregorio. It started around this time last night and burned four acres. Calfire called crews from san mateo, santa clara and the Central Valley to battle the flames. Firefighters say theyre ready to increase staff and face the fire danger even though its winter. Were prepared to hire roughly 128 additional firefighters. Hopefully in the next couple of weeks. Firefighters say its much drier in the coast right now than during summertime. Now to developing news out of Southern California where a fire has burned several homes and spread across almost 2,000 acres. That fire also led to mandatory evacuations. It broke out early today in the Angeles National forest near. Which is located about 7 miles from downtown los angeles. Reporter santa ana winds making conditions treacherous for firefighters fighting the colby fire. We are surrounded by fire actually kissed the door, the back window of the house. Reporter firefighters are hoping the winds shift in direction pushing the fire out into open space but theyre also planning for the worse. With the Forest Service we put a plan in place to put bulldozers, hand crews and aircrafts up on the ridge on the north end of the fire to stop the fire from progressing farther into the Angeles National forest. Reporter the fire started when men were tossing paper into a campfire. A breeze reportedly, a breeze had kicked up and set this fire. Reporter the suspects are identified as robert aguirre, Jonathan Carl herald and eugene henry. At least one of the men is homeless. Glendora city Officials Say the First Responders helped save lives and hundreds of homes. Many residents are also saying theyre just glad they made it out in one piece. Everything is gone. Thank you, bill. Two investigates, senator Dianne Feinsteins push to clean up a Community Gathering spot she calls 2 investigates a new push to clean up San Franciscos main library. Weve learned that illegal activity and bad behavior have caught the attention of dianne feinstein. Shes even told the mayor now to clean it up. Amber lee live in the city with how the senator learned about the problems and the action thats now being taken. Reporter frank, ive learned that senator feinstein met with the mayor after she sent an aide here into the main library to get a firsthand look at the problem. Senator feinstein describes the main library as a treasured Cultural Institution that belongs to the people of San Francisco. The senator told us unfortunately i recently heard complaints from several people about activities at the library that seriously undermine its mission and the enjoyment of all visitors. Its a shame that we all pay for this. This is taxpayers money. Reporter the library has long been a haven for the homeless. Senator feinstein says shes concerned about recent incidents. Theres this man who was caught urinating. He was banned from the library for three months, but he returned before his suspension was over and urinated on shelves of books causing 3,000 in damage. We dont want our kids in there grabbing stuff that somebody has peed on or anything like that. Reporter some shelves that held the damaged books still sit empty. More than once has she reminded me that we as a whole city, including many mayors since her time invested in our main library. Reporter after meeting with feinstein, the mayor sent this letter to the commission. Asking for new penalties to prevent unacceptable behavior. Possession and illegal use or intent to sell drugs in our premises, indecent exposure. Reporter at tonights Library Commission meeting there was discussion about the senators letter. There are now stepped up Police Reports including a Police Sergeant whos stationed at the library. When you have one or two incidents that tarnishes our imagine, and we want to turn that around. A man accused of punching a San Francisco Police Officer entered a not guilty plea in court. The incident at a chevron station was caught by a surveillance camera sunday morning. Prosecutors say 37yearold Joel Enriquez and female were exchanging information. The officer throws a punch and fires his weapon. Injurying enriquez. If consequences are very serious. Reporter enriquez was charged with assault, resisting arrest and assault on a Police Officer. Hes free on 150,000 bail and returns to court next month. We are now half way through flu season but Bay Area Health Officials Say the peak is still to come. By our count there have been so far 20 flu related deaths in our area since flu season began. Health officials are now reporting deaths in each of the nine bay area counties. Many of the victims had the h1n1 strain also known as the swine flu. Thats the virus that killed 600 californians during the flu pandemic six years ago. Doctors say its not too late to get a flu shot to protect yourself against h1n1. And thats exactly what folks did today at this flu clinic in fremont. Its very early and very intense. Weve had early mortalities which is unusual for california because we usually dont get it until the end of january and end of february. Police commissioner heard about an initiative to curve pedestrian death. Tickets driving most likely to cause collisions with pedestrians including speeding and running red lights. Every single day, cars hit three people that are walking. Reporter the city saw a record 21 pedestrians deaths last year with seven in december including one involving a oober driver. The city is promising 7 million over the next five years for pedestrian safety. The case of a teenager accused of setting another teenager on fire will remain in adult court. The victim suffered Second Degree burns. We told you about how cliff swallows got caught in netting. The netting was supposed to protect them but instead they became trapped and some died. Ktvus roth rob spoke to his relatives that say it happened when the man just went out for a stroll on Christmas Eve. Reporter this brother and sister dont know if their father will survive the beating he took Christmas Eve. His condition is very bad. My father, my mom. Reporter so theyre going public in the hopes someone saw what happened to 82yearold pham and will come forward. Pham has seven children and 13 grandchildren. His family says for some reason he walked out of his oakland home around 11 00 Christmas Eve night. They dont know why he left or where he was going. Pham reached the intersection of ninth avenue and east 28th street a few blocks from his home. This is where he was attacked. But he managed to walk another half a mile before police found him. This is a very serious assault. He has a facial fracture, some broken ribs. Reporter pham remains in critical condition. Pham wasnt carrying any money. I dont know if people tried to rob him and didnt get anything because he doesnt have money. Maybe they hit him instead, i dont know.
