a 15-year span. his stunts on a bike were legendary. police in north carolina say he died from an aapparently self-inflicted gunshot wound. he leaves behind a wife and two young daughters. he was only 41 years old. well, there's evidence high-ranking michigan officials knew about a spike in legionnaires disease much sooner. the disease may have been linked to the contamination of the city's water supply. the governor said he had just learned of the connection. e-mails obtained by the a.p. say state agencies and high ranking members of the governor's administration knew about it ten months had an inappropriate relationship with lovell who was planning to expose their relationship. we're getting some new details this morning about an incident involving cleveland browns quarterback johnny manziel which led to him being invested for assault. a report by ft. worth police indicates manziel ex-girlfriend claimed he struck her several times last friday during an argument. colleen crowley abc rather. donald trump is enjoying a wide lead. 11 points ahead of his nearest challenger, marco rubio, with ted cruz in a distant third place. and as the republican race heats up in new hampshire, trump apparently focused on not making the same mistakes he did in iowa, holding five events in one day. it's your voice, your vote. and abc's tom llamas is covering the republicans in new hampshire. >> reporter: donald trump trying to step up the pace. meeting volunteers at his campaign office, shaking hands with local police. trump's message, only an outsider can fix america's problems. >> no politician is going to solve it. no politician. these people -- i'd like to use really foul language. i won't do it. i was going to say they're full of [ expletive ] but i won't. no, it's true. >> reporter: and trump still wailing away at senator ted cruz under fire after his campaign spread misleading information suggesting dr. ben carson was dropping out of the race after the iowa caucuses. now voicemails surfacing. the cruz campaign with this call on caucus day. >> this is the cruz campaign with breaking news. dr. ben carson will be planning to suspend his campaign following tonight's caucuses. please inform any carson caucusgoer to this news and urge them to caucus for ted cruz instead. >> reporter: we just got the voicemail that happened on caucus day, along with the e-mail. what type of pattern do you see with ted cruz or his campaign you don't like? > i haven't seen that. it was very unfair to dr. carson. i guess probably i was the one that was hurt most by it because maybe i would have won. >> when you win in the state of iowa, your opponents want to tear you down. they want to attack you. they want to throw mud. >> reporter: now cruz playing offense. >> jimmy carter out of new hampshire. donald trump telling me he needs his people to go out and vote for him. senator cruz noticing that rubio surged but he's reminding voters here that he won the iowa caucuses, not senator rubio and bronze is not the new gold. tom llamas, new hampshire. >> trump will be center stage tomorrow night with his remaining six competitors for the next republican debate in new hampshire. joining our political team as abc news coverage begins saturday evening at 8:00 eastern/7:00 central. the zika virus, rattling nerves as it spreads across the country and the world. there are more than 50 confirmed cases nationwide. at least a dozen are in florida where the state of emergency has been expanded. abc's linzie janis is there with the latest. >> reporter: the state of florida ramping up its fight against the zika virus. >> while all the cases in florida are travel-related, the mosquito that causes zika virus is common in florida. >> reporter: the governor now declaring a state of emergency in five counties. so, are they prepared? florida has 20 million residents and over 100 million tourists a year, and right now, they have less than 1,000 kits to test for zika. the governor is requesting thousands more. >> only one in five individuals who have been bitten and infected by a mosquito actually show any signs or symptoms. >> reporter: the symptoms of zika -- fever, rich, joint pain, conjunctivitis, muscle pain and headache. in dallas this week, news that the virus was transmitted sexually has many officials concerned. another worry -- the first case of zika infection from a blood transfusion reported in brazil. here at miami international airport, there are thousands of flights coming in every day from 30 high-risk countries flagged by the cdc. more than 100 flights from brazil alone. linzie janis, abc news, miami. we're learning of a new danger for airline passengers -- distracted air traffic controllers. an investigation by wabc finds some of the faa employees have been disciplined for texting, taking selfies or even watching sexually explicit videos on their phones. not one of these on-duty controllers who were caught has been fired. >> there is no task that i can think of that requires more intense repetitive, continuous concentration than being an air traffic controller. >> the faa says controller who's do not turn off their phones while at work face disciplinary action. some experts say the controllers shouldn't have their phones with them at all. the government is taking new steps to stop food-borne illnesses stemming from tainted poultry. the tougher rules will affect chicken sold in pieces as well as ground chicken and turkey. the new standards are targeting salmonella by lowering the level of contamination allowed in the processing facilities. the move is aimed at cutting the number of cases by 50,000. and there's a surprising discovery under the golden arches. some of mcdonald's new salads are packing more calories, fat, salt than even a big mac. among them, mickey d's premium southwest salad featuring healthy spinach and kale, but it is topped with buttermilk, chicken, cheese, ranch dressing and much more, all totaling 710 calories and 43 grams of salt and more than 1300 milligrams -- or grams of fat and 1300 milligrams of salt 37. that's nearly 200 more calories than a big mac. >> the lesson of finds out. because until late yesterday afternoon, they had time to claim the prize. it didn't happen. at least one person is suing, claiming he submitted the winner but was refused the prize. does
