this massive alligator spotted walking the green, the jaw-dropping pictures having everyone fleeing the fairway. will this gator take a bite out of the golfers' game? and good morning, america. how about that gator. i say we give him the putt. >> yeah. >> yes. >> give him everything. >> mulligan! >> anything he wants. >> that was something. >> it was. but we're going to begin with that news breaking overnight. two officers shot outside the police station in ferguson, missouri. you're looking at the scene there just moments ago. the officers were rushed to the hospital. this all happening just hours after the police chief stepped down. abc's alex perez is in ferguson with the latest. good morning alex. >> reporter: good morning, robin. two officers being treated at the hospital behind me. we're told they're in serious condition. this morning, authorities now on the man hunt trying to track down the suspects who opened fire. >> reporter: bullets flying just after midnight in ferguson, missouri. >> okay, there was just gunfire and now cops have guns drawn. >> reporter: the moments the shots were fired caught on video by a protester outside the embattled police department. >> we saw the muzzle fire from the gun up top of the street and so we all just ducked down and once we ducked down then saw the cop shot next to us. >> reporter: two police officers rushed to the hospital with gunshot wounds both in serious condition. >> they're being treated. they are conscious. however, those are very serious gunshot injuries to be able to sustain in your upper torso and certainly in your face. >> reporter: authorities say at least three shots targeting the police fired from abarea located near the application station. >> these police officers were standing there and they were shot just because they were police officers. >> reporter: before the shootings protesters faced off with police in riot gear. sparked by the resignation by the city's police chief, tom jackson. >> it is very hard for him to leave and for us to have him leave. he felt that this was the best way forward. >> reporter: to critics chief tom jackson had no choice but to go this scathing report found that while blacks make up 67% of the population they accounted for a disturbing 93% of those arrested. this morning, police are looking for justice for themselves, a manhunt now under way to find out whoever is responsible. protesters say the police chief resignation is less. they're still searching for the suspects, whethers there's any useful surveillance tape in this case will be key. >> okay, alex, thank you. we're going to turn now to new trouble for the secret service. two agents under investigation this morning accused of driving while drinking and crashing into a white house security barrier. abc's jon karl is at the white house with more. jon, a new chief at the agency and this is a new black eye. >> reporter: this is a big embarrassment for the secret service. here you have, george, an alleged drunk driving incident on white house grounds and nobody was arrested. the secret service has now removed the two senior agents from their jobs. one of them, a top member of president obama's personal detail. they were driving a secret service vehicle last week after allegedly drinking at a party for another agent who was retiring. they allegedly drove the car right through security tape that had been set up outside the perimeter of the white house after a suspicious item had been thrown onto the white house grounds. after going through the tape, the car crashed into a white house barricade. just last week, the man tapped by president obama to fix the secret service told abc's pierre thomas that the agency would make no excuses for mistakes. >> i think when you fail and we have failed we own it. now it's up to us to correct it. there's no excuses. >> reporter: but the incident follows a string of recent failures including the knife-wielding man who jumped the fence last fall and sprinted across the white house lawn going through the front door and into the white house residence before being apprehended. what may be most disturbing about this incident is that other secret service officers who were on duty at the time and witnessed it wanted to arrest those agents and they were told, george, by a supervisor to let them go home. >> and, jon, there are signs already that congress is going to come down hard on this. >> reporter: that's right. you have the top committee in the house that supervises, oversees the secret service, the top democrat and republican on that committee issued a very tough statement last night, george, saying that this incident begs the question whether the leadership changes at the agency are enough. they call this a dangerous incident with a major lack of justice. >> you could see more calls really for a top to bottom cleanup in the secret service. >> reporter: that's exactly what these two members of congress are calling for. >> okay, jon karl, thanks very much. now the latest on the boston marathon bombing trial. the biggest terror case in this country in years. jurors were shown new evidence from the night the tsarnaev brothers were on the run and killed an mit police officer. abc's tom llamas has been in the courtroom for us and he joins us this morning. good morning, tom. >> reporter: robin, good morning to you. throughout this dramatic trial, dzhokhar tsarnaev has seem uninterested but yesterday in court he popped up in his chair when an eyewitness pointed at him saying that's the man he saw lean into officer collier's cruiser the night the young officer was taken by surprise and shot to death. >> we're hearing a lot of loud noises outside of our window. it sounds like somebody is hitting a trash can really loud. >> reporter: when mit police officers tried to respond to this 911 call on april 18th, three days after the boston marathon bombing, they knew something was wrong because fellow officer sean collier was nearby but wasn't answering his radio. >> we're really not sure what's going on. >> reporter: prosecutors played these 911 calls and this surveillance video in court on wednesday. they say it shows dzhokhar tsarnaev and his brother tamerlan walking through the mit campus approaching collier's car from behind before shooting the 27-year-old officer multiple times. >> officer down. officer down. >> reporter: when police reached collier's squad car they found this gory scene, collier shot in the car, bleeding from his head. >> get on it. >> reporter: his fellow officers yelling for help. dzhokhar's lawyers claim it was the 21-year-old's brother, tamerlan who shot collier. the two alleged terrorists at this point on the run for more than 72 hours after allegedly setting off two bombs at the boston marathon. prosecutors believe that the tsarnaev brothers killed collier because they wanted his gun but this image shows they couldn't get the blood-stained firearm out of the holster. jurors wednesday also getting an up-close look at what the fbi calls pieces of the pressure cooker bomb, the detonation wire and the damage they helped create including the shredded and charred jacket worn by jessica kenski who lost her legs in the blast. today, in court, the beginning of the end of the tsarnaev brothers. we're expected to hear from the man they allegedly carjacked as police were closing in on them when they unsuccessfully tried to bomb and soot their way out of watertown. robin. >> all right, tom, thank you. now to amy with the morning's other top stories beginning with the latest from the university of oklahoma. good morning. >> that's right, robin. there are new revelations this morning about that racist fraternity video at the university of oklahoma. former trustees at the fraternity now acknowledge the racist chant has been around for years calling it a cancer. abc's ryan owens has the details and the new protests overnight. >> there will never be a [ bleep ] in sae. you can hang them from the tree -- >> reporter: the frat brother seen leading this racist chant, 19-year-old parker rice, has apologized and isn't coming back to the university of oklahoma. but that's not enough for these protesters. >> racism has to go. >> reporter: about two dozen people marched down rice's street. rice and his family aren't home. they're in hiding, he claims due to threats. >> i've heard some of the protesters say this neighborhood was racist which is painting with a broad brush. >> reporter: also this morning the school's disgraced chapter of sigma alpha epsilon admitting this chant was not a one-time thing. a horrible cancer entered into the ou chapter of sae three to four years ago and was not immediately and totally stopped. it should have been, the now disbanded frat's board of trustees wrote in a statement released late wednesday. it's the latest in a string of apologies. first from rice, then from the parents of his former frat brother levi pettit who is also on the tape. back on the campus that neither young man will return to, students gathered for a forum on race, hoping to heal. >> when you say those things just really think about what you're saying. >> reporter: this morning, still just those two students have been expelled but, the university president here is making it clear he still is going over those videotapes and that more punishments seem likely. >> all right, ryan, thank you for the very latest on that. in the meantime, the search resumes this morning for 11 u.s. service members missing after a helicopter crash in the florida panhandle. the seven marines and four soldiers were remembered last night at a candlelight vigil not far from the crash site. some debris has been recovered but dense fog has made the search difficult. pentagon commanders are voicing new concern about the fight against isis in iraq. joint chiefs chairman martin dempsey told congress 20,000 fighters trained by iran have joined iraqi forces retaking the city of tikrit. he said he's concerned about what happens after the fight and whether those shiite fighters backed by iran will seek revenge against local sunni residents. well, a section of busy highway near detroit could be closed for days following this tanker crash. the flames and smoke seen for miles. the truck was carrying 13,000 gallons of fuel, some leaked into nearby sewers. and a wild crash in colorado as a car slammed into this pizza shop. you see there a woman on the hood. she had been walking nearby when the their phones to pay attention to what's going on around them. case in point, last night's basketball game in charlotte, two fans had great seats but even with all of the courtside action, they still couldn't look away from their phone and look at what happened. can you see it there? the woman is okay. ooh. she didn't even leave her seat actually. but the replay has us wondering what was so compelling on that phone that she didn't see that ball heading straight for her nose. >> has to be candy crush. >> candy crush. >> 100 likes on my instagram. >> if you're going to look at your phone during the game get the seats higher up where the balls can't get you. >> very good advice. >> she got a nosebleed anyway. >> well done. >> well played. well played. [ applause ] >> well done. >> amy saw that ball coming. thank you. we're going to turn now to that remarkable photo sparking a firestorm online. you're going to see it right there. it's a newborn cradled in the american flag, sweet image, but some critics say the photographer is desecrating the flag. abc's gio benitez with the story. >> reporter: good morning to you. listen to this, the photographer is a navy vet, the baby's mom is an army vet. the dad is in the navy right now. they say the photo was to honor their country but instead it is sparking a fierce debate over the treatment of our stars and stripes. this morning, an online firestorm over this military baby's wildly viral photoshoot. some calling it adorable. others, deplorable and unpatriotic. a newborn named landon wrapped in the american flag carried by his father and his navy uniform, mom is a veteran and so is the photographer. >> i would have never imagined that anybody would see this image as a disrespect to our nation's flag. >> reporter: vanessa hicks served four years in the navy and is married to an active duty navy member. she says she's used the flag as a prop before and that landon's parents were eager to do it too. >> you stand for honor, courage and commitment and, as i look at this image, that's what i see. >> reporter: but not everyone sees it that way. this facebook group saying, to use the american flag in such a way is disrespectful, rude, tacky, disgusting and against the u.s. flag code. >> they're attacking me as a person. was i not an honorable veteran? was i not an honorable american? >> reporter: the u.s. flag code saying in part that the flag should never be carried flat or horizontally but always aloft and free. and never for receiving, holding, carrying or delivering anything. but hicks says there was no ill intent and little landon's parents are happy with the photos. his mom telling abc news, "i would like to thank everyone that has supported us." and what about that u.s. flag code? well, the supreme court has ruled in the past that desecration of the flag may be protected by the first amendment as symbolic speech, though each state has its own laws, but, guys, so many people calling this a sweet image this morning. >> i'm one of them. >> me too. >> you could tell their intent was to be honorable. >> they served their country. >> yes, they have. >> and her husband is currently serving the country. >> what do you have? i got something, george, that may keep you off the golf course. it will make me think twice. golf is hard enough as a game but with the bunkers and all the water hazards and, of course, my slice and everything else that i do, but there's a different type of hazard on one florida course, this massive alligator has been spotted by some players and the pictures are going viral right now. imagine you're trying to sink a putt when you suddenly spot this. yep, this jurassic park-looking thing is actually a giant alligator making eyes pop and jaws drop at myakka pines golf course in florida. dick huber snapped this photo of this 12-foot beast walking on all legs and immediately posted it online. >> went on facebook and i guess it went viral. >> reporter: it sure did, generating more than 500,000 views so far. it turns out, gators are all over the green at myakka. you can see some of golfzilla smaller friends in this video. >> there's swampland and that means gators. >> reporter: gators and golf courses are actually a pretty common match. poked fun at in "happy gilmore." >> give me the ball, alligator. ow! >> reporter: but in real life things can turn pretty hairy. just last year in weston, florida, a golf ball diver was attacked. >> about an hour and a half into my diving and the gator snapped on to my left arm. >> reporter: and this roaming reptile caused quite the scare during the 2013 pga tour in louisiana. >> these guys are happy when it's wet. >> reporter: but, back at myakka pines they say, in the 37 years of business, a gator has never hurt anybody, even if they have messed up a few swings. i would say stay clear of the gators. don't take the "happy gilmore" approach. that's not that important. >> good advice. thank you. good to have you back from boston. >> great to be here. >> still flooding a problem across the country. >> gators will be happy all from about southern indiana down to texas. i want to start you out in kentucky because we've seen some 2 to 6 inches. look at the flooding along the rivers. on top of snow melt that's been an issue. look at this video. this is from texas and this morning houston has thunderstorms but on top of that, look, already seen flooded fields and this flooding is going to still be an issue through saturday. so watch from new orleans up to louisville, back through nashville, little rock, vicksburg there, all included in those flood watches, and that's because you'll see another 2 to 3 inches in the red area. 3 plus inches and a lot of those rivers will get just too high. in the northeast here, we will eventually see rain, saturday is looking really rainy from d.c. up to new york and that's on top of any of that snow. fog is another problem. >> i am your meteorologist and this afternoon, we have sun and warm weather on the way especially inland into the 70s and along the coast, it is cooler but still, above normal and in the low-to-mid 60s. the seven-day forecast shows the warming trend continues on friday and record warmth is possible on saturday, and 80's in many spots and into sunday and that warm pattern continues next week with st. patrick's little change and in the >> okay, don't look at this for a second. wasn't it nice yesterday?
