And we have so much to get to. This morning that massive storm sweeping across the country dropping snow from texas to new york, six states declaring an emergency. More than 2400 Flights Canceled. Ginger and our team on that. In a minute. But we begin with that breaking news. Look at these dramatic pictures. Right here. The u. S. Ambassador to south korea, mark lippert, viciously slashed at a breakfast speech. North korea is praising the attack as the ambassador recovers in a hospital this morning. Abcs terry moran has all the latest. Good morning, terry. Reporter good morning, george. This was a truly frightening attack raising real questions about security for american diplomats around the world. An undefended ambassador. The assailant walking up to him armed with a teninch knife. And out for blood. It was a very close call. Im bleeding here. Im bleeding here. I need an ambulance fast. Get me to the hospital. Reporter this is u. S. Ambassador mark lippert moments after being attacked by a knifewielding korean nationalist and this is the man named by police as kim kijung who shouted north and south korea should be reunified, slashing away with this knife, before he was wrestled to the ground. Ambassador lippert, an iraq war veteran defended himself from the attack. Lippert was rushed to a hospital where he was treated for deep cuts to his face, his arm and his hand. Hes had 80 stitches. Hes in stable condition and is expected to remain in the hospital for the next few days. Lippert is close to president obama. Advising him during the 2008 campaign, then moving to the white house to serve on the National Security Council Staff before becoming ambassador to south korea. Tensions between north and south korea have spiked this week, as the u. S. And south korea conduct annual military exercises in north korean media have issued dire threats in response. The attacker was still shouting against those joint exercises as he was led away by police strapped to a gurney. Ambassador lippert kept his cool throughout the incident. Shortly after he was stitched up tweeting, doing well and in great spirits. And though north korea praised this assault as a knife attack of justice theres no evidence of any involvement there. The real question now, how did a guy with a knife like that get so close . Robin. And people want the answer to that question as you know, terry, thank you. Now to that winter blast stretching from dallas to new england this morning affecting more than 90 million americans. School has been canceled for more than a Million Students. And more than 2,000 Flights Canceled already. Our extreme team, you know theyre tracking it all, and ginger starts us here off in times square. Ginger. Right in times square where the flakes have become quite fat. Weve got that snow globe effect and we just transitioned to snow. But there are parts of kentucky that has more than 20 inches. Lets look at the radar long island will get some of the heavier totals but some of the heftiest south and west of us, frozen precipitation for 1500 miles. So many folks, including those in louisville this morning, under a winter storm warning and thats where we find our alex perez. Alex. Reporter hey, good morning, ginger. More than 1. 5 Million Students home from school today because of the weather. Here in louisville they got more than 8 inches and once the snow started it seemed it would never stop. Overnight, a traffic nightmare. Motorists stranded for hours. Backup 20 miles long. One driver tweeted i havent moved since 9 00 p. M. Last night. The nation guard called in to help. Moving drivers to warming stations to get food and water. In illinois, this semi lost control and ended up in the median. Whiteout conditions left wreck after wreck. Melting snow making for mayhem. Look how fast that is. Reporter in West Virginia, this bridge washed away in just seconds. Chunks of ice filling rivers, and in ohio, ice the size of mattresses ending up on the road and in dallas we were on the tarmac for about 3 1 2 hours. Reporter passengers fuming in ft. Worth after a few inches of snow left them stranded, their flight later canceled, leaving them to seek shelter at the airport. And no relief for passengers just yet. Already more than 2400 Flights Canceled this morning and that number only expected to go up as the day goes on. Now lets go to rob marciano who is in philadelphia this morning. Hey, rob. Reporter hi, alex. Flights canceled here in philadelphia. But we come to you from the abc news road cam at the base of the Art Museum Steps here in philadelphia. Take a look. Better known as the rocky steps and philadelphia will be fighting against mother nature. They have 350 plows and salt trucks at the ready. Look ahead and you can see that the roads here, the ben franklin parkway is at least for now wet but the sides of the roads, the grassy area beginning to see snow accumulate. They couldnt pretreat the roads because it was raining last night. The plan of attack is to salt after accumulation begins and 4 to 8 expected. Theyve only seen 4. 8 for the entire year. Theyre probably get that today. Back to you in new york. Thanks, rob. So many people are doubling what theyve already had this season. A lot of folks back to even louisiana, arkansas, talking about frozen precipitation. New orleans this morning dropped almost 20 degrees in just 50 minutes. Thats how powerful this cold front is. Lets go right back to the map, and you can see those temperature differences. 70 in mobile. Jackson, mississippi, 34. So you know its happening. That cold air coming behind and thats going to be the frozen precipitation. Itll come not just as snow but ice and snow. The heaviest snow falling from baltimore back to the west through West Virginia. Im making a declaration because its so cold, im wearing boots and leg warmers until it goes above 40, all right. George. Okay, ginger, now get inside. Were going to turn now to the Boston Marathon trial that opened yesterday. With a stunning admission. The defense said that Dzhokhar Tsarnaev set the bombs but argued his brother was the mastermind and manipulator. Abcs brian ross is covering the trial in boston. Brian, we also heard emotional testimony from a string of victims. Reporter thats right, george, good morning, this city is reliving the horror of those attacks with often tearful testimony and dramatic new videos not made public until now. More new, disturbing videos are expected today of the two explosions on that festive spring race day. For the first time the jury saw this footage of the first bomb blast near the marathon finish line and then in the distance, the second, much more powerful blast. The chaos and the carnage in the aftermath caught on tape by a wounded spectator. Get her out of here. Reporter frantic emergency workers tried to treat the most seriously injured. Youre okay. Reporter inside a nearby sports store, stunned and wounded spectators stumble in and the store manager uses running clothes to fix a tourniquet on the leg of a badly injured woman. Others ripped clothes off the rack to be used as tourniquets for the many left fighting for their lives that day, are now attending this trial including Marc Fucarile who lost his right leg. Reliving the situation and the circumstance that happened that day when we mention the ones we lost that day. The ones that really should be remembered. Reporter in court, Dzhokhar Tsarnaevs lawyer judy clarke flatly stated it was him, admitting he was responsible for the senseless, horrific, misguided acts, but she pointed to this video of tsarnaev and his older brother tamerlan about to plant their bombs to claim her client was only following the path created by his older brother later killed in a police shootout. Its a strategy to persuade the jury that the younger brother should get life in prison, not the Death Penalty. But prosecutors this morning will continue to make the case that tsarnaev was not some misguided, misdirected adolescent but instead, a committed terrorist in his own right a soldier in a holy war, out to punish america. All right there, brian ross in boston, thank you. Turn to dan abrams. What do you think of the strategy of the defense . Its kind of the only strategy. Youve got video of him. Youve got his scrawlings in the boat. Theres almost no defense for him to suggest he didnt do it. You know, typically this would be the sort of case where you might see the defendant say ill plead guilty and ill admit it, just take the Death Penalty off the table and in most cases prosecutors would accept that. Not in this case. Theyre not taking the Death Penalty off the table for him. So, is it proper for them to say its more of his brothers fault . Not really. Meaning as a legal matter, they cant say its more his fault than it is mine. The judge has made that clear, too. The judge has said youre not going to be saying hes more at fault but what they can be saying is explaining how this all happened and thats what the defense is going to do. Theyre going to explain in their view why this happened, how this happened, but they have to be very careful about not doing exactly what you just said. The defense wanted to move it out of state. You think it was right that the judge says no here. It affected everyone. I mean, the notion that people in massachusetts were more affected by this than people in other places in the country look, if you had someone who you knew personally who was directly impacted by this, youre probably not going to be on this jury but, when youre talking about generally people knew about the case, impacted by the case, this is a case that affected the country. Okay, i know well be talking about this for days to come. Thank you very much, dan. Were going to turn now to the latest fallout from the controversy over Hillary Clintons emails. She responded overnight with a tweet saying shes asked the state department to publicly release her emails and this comes after a House Committee investigating the benghazi terror attacks subpoenaed that personal email account. Jon karl joins us with the latest. Which emails will the public see and when will we see them . Reporter george, this will basically be the honor system. The emails to be released will come from the 55,000 pages of emails mrs. Clinton turned over to the state Department Late last year but, remember, those were emails that she and her team reviewed. She chose which of her emails to turn over to the state department. So, the bottom line is, people will have to trust that she has turned over all relevant official documents to the state department. As for when, the state department only will say itll take some time to review the emails. I would expect this process to take months, not weeks. And, jon, there had been some suggestions earlier that some laws may not have been fully followed, is that still the case . Reporter thats what the congress is investigating. It looks, the white house believes, if she did what she said she did she followed the letter of the law if not the spirit of the law. Jon karl, thanks very much. Lets go to amy with the other top stories. Big scare for airline passengers. Thats right. An emergency on the runway in denver. And finally, next time you go on one of those safari parks, do yourself a favor, lock your car doors or this could happen. [ screaming ] lock the door. Oh, my gosh, i didnt know they could do that. Yep, they can do that apparently. That lion opened the car door with its teeth. This happened in south africa. Thankfully the girl in the backseat had very quick reflexes. She quickly slammed the door shut. If she hadnt, not sure they would be laughing about that today. I mean, i didnt know they could do that either. Who knew . Yeah. That is terrifying. Wow, auto lock. Yes. Yeah, you should lock your door anyway. Thats like having the window down asking for trouble. What do you have for us, michael . I have a Little Something about some music there, robin. Pharrell williams is arguably the most popular musician in america but the superstar was on a different kind of stage wednesday testifying in that blurred lines trial. Abcs brandi hitt has the story. Blurred lines reporter this morning a clearer look at the making of blurred lines, from one of the music masterminds behind the 2013 megahit. Pharrell williams taking the stand wednesday admitting, i must have been channeling that feeling, that late70s feeling while writing the hit he claims in less than an hour. But the prolific producer maintaining he and cowriter robin thicke did not rip off marvin gayes 1977 hit got to give it up. When asked do you think blurred lines has the feel of got to give it up, the singer adamantly responding, feel, not infringement. Williams also testifying that at no point in the songs production did gayes classic come to mind. If jurors believe that he was not inspired by marvin gaye, but rather by, you know, the songs he heard in the 1970s growing up, you know, they may have a chance at prevailing. Reporter but when a musicologist brought in by gayes family later played strippeddown snippets of the williams testified it sounds like youre playing the same thing. Thats the argument being made by the children of the late soul legend who want in on a piece of blurred lines profits. If you cant hear reporter profits to the tune of more than 16. 6 million. Earnings typically kept secret but exposed in court tuesday. Thicke taking 5. 6 million. Williams earning 5. 1 million, and more than 700,000 going to rapper t. Sevenday forecast shows tomorrow is the warmest at the celebrating this young womans first snow ever. Lets get back inside. Enjoy it. Okay ginger thank you. First up in our heat index a troubling new way to cyberbully. An app that lets kids post anonymous comments about classmates and shows up in schools all across the country and ryan smith tells us how some schools are fighting back. This burn book where they write mean things. Reporter in mean girls, the burn book was all the rage. We cut out girls pictures and then we wrote comments. Reporter now its a cell phone app going viral in schools across the country. It lets students find and click on their school then post Anonymous Content about anything or anyone. For this app in particular the fact that people are anonymous, the majority of the time they have been negative. Reporter the apps terps of service web page clearly stating users may not use the service to transmit content that is hateful, abusive or otherwise objectionable by burnbook users but the app and similar ones like after school app have kearns of online threats expose exposing kids to signcyberbullies. 17yearold tailor experienced this firsthand. Somebody said tatum should get cancer like his mother and die. I was very hurt that somebody would say that to me. That just really hit deep. Reporter and parents crying foul like this father in san diego who didnt want to be identified. He says his he says his high schoolaged daughter was a target. Vulgarity and i think its wrong. These apps create a huge problem for teenagers because there are devastating effects. Reporter burnbooks ceo say they do not condone bullying. Anonymity is a privilege, not a right, they say, abuse that privilege and there will be consequences. Some schools now taking action. That San Diego School district sending a message to middle school and high school families, warning them that charges may result from posting threatening or inappropriate messages adding, threats are not jokes. Some schools are trying to block access to apps like this over School Networks but since the users are anonymous, the key here really is for parents to talk to their kids. That way if an issue comes up they can try to identify the anonymous tormenter and tell authorities. Absolutely. Lets talk about this. Ericka souter is here. Boy, its easy to see why parents would get upset about this. More and more parents are being alarmed. We grew up and bullying meant being physically hit. Now it takes on a totally different meaning and one in three kids say they have been the victim of cyberbullying. Parents hear that and they see more and more kids attempt suicide because of cyberbullying and they get how dangerous this is for their children. So where does the law stand on this . Weve seen the disclaimers. Does that protect them . Its tough to stop the apps because the apps themselves are protected in a sense immune from prosecution for the offensive content their users post so, while parents may be saying, well, we cant get the apps and website, you can get the bully. Laws are stepping up to say, if you bully online you could be subject to criminal harassment, stalking and some states have gone further passing laws saying to bullies, if youre caught bullying you could be subject from anything from suspension to jail time. Of course, that would require lifting the veil of anonymity. But, can you do that in the apps . No, thats going to be tough to do. Thats why the parent kid connection is so important. Getting a sense of who the tormentors should be. And trying to figure that out. What should parents do . You have to question your kids. Make sure, you know, theyre not going to be open and honest about bullying at all times so they might be embarrassed about it let them know youre there to help them not judge and dont respond to cyberbullies. Dont respond . Dont respond. That just fuels the fire. A lot of parents, their kneejerk reaction, go online and launch an attack themselves. Third, monitor your kids. This goes for parents of bullied children but also parents who suspect their kids are bullied. You have to put a stop to the behavior no matter which side of the tharg amount or issue you fall on. Okay. Ericka brings up a good point. You dont respond. You tell School Authorities and authorities and they can take up the baton and say lets look at this and lets see if we need to Contact Police and thats the message. You bully online you could be subject to prosecution. Thanks very much. Lets go to robin. That is great advice. I agree. Do not respond. Dont engage. But now to hilary duff opening up about her recent divorce saying she was too young when she got married. Abcs Abbie Boudreau has that story for us. You could be my dirty secret reporter this morning charttopping singer and actress hilary duff, famous for her role on tvs Lizzie Mcguire and movies like a cinderella story, opening up about her fiveyearlong marriage and recent divorce from mike comrie. The 27yearold telling cosmopolitan magazine, i dont want to sound bitter because im definitely not, but i dont know if people are meant to be together forever. They both seemed to be on really good terms. They both seem to be on the same page about the split. She is eager to embrace the next chapter of her life. Reporter the couple married when duff was 22 and have a son together, 2yearold luca, but duff now revealing she may have gotten married too young saying we both really wanted to get married. Id been working since the age of 11 or 12, so making that choice at a young age seemed right for me adding she has no regrets. We spent the majority of our time together really happy. It wasnt working well enough to stay together, but there was still a lot of love involved. Something reporter and duff isnt slowing down. Singing about the single life in her summer hit all about you. And ready to return to the small screen this month starring in the upcoming tv show younger. Before you know it youll be in your 40s. Make that its a great morning when this man is here hugh jackman. Oh but he plays a bad guy. Yep. In the latest movie chappie that takes us to the not too distant future where a Robotic Police force is used to control crime. A computer engineer wants to help droids become more human and hughs character vincent, he doesnt like that at all. Not at all. Take a look. Last night he brought a droid in here and it was sent in have you seen this . Do you know about this . I told him no. Okay thats a lot worse than just failing to work. So lets use this situation to make certain other robot s do it. Oh. Welcome, hugh jackman, back to Good Morning America. Thank you. Good to see you. Everybody was everybody with their comments about your look but first of all, the accent. You were my real accent. Actually more than my real accent. I havent played an australian since the movie australia so when they sent me the script i was actually reading through neill, i said ive never heard this before. It was like im mad as a frog in a sock. I was like i dont know if this is australian. Oh it is. I find myself googling australian slang. Have you been gone that long. Ive been gone too long. I have a mate that does all that. Full as a doctors wallet. Everything. It was beautiful. I have to tell you, really enjoyed watching it. I wasnt sure what to expect. Tell everybody about the premise and the fact that i wasnt used to seeing you being the bad guy. Yeah well you could have talked to my kids. Thats pretty much me most days but, look when youre in a Neill Blomkamp movie and if you liked district 9 youll like chappie. His movies are unexpected and changed the genre and the movie is placed in the not too distant future where Police Robots are taking over from humans and the guy that creates that has created this purely artificially intelligent robot called chappie and i can tell you its not one of those futuristic movies where the robots you fall in love with this character except mine. He thinks its the worst thing that could ever happen. You talk about neill and his films are entertaining and make you think and feel and i did. I fell in love with chappie. I dont want to add took place but my wife cried at the end of the movie. In a way this robot which is when the robot is switched on for the first time its like a pure innocent child. This blank slate so this robot is stolen by this gang and so put in this completely dysfunctional violent background and its a bit of an argument about nature versus nurture. Are we a product of our environment . Or genetics. You fall in love with this character. Yeah. Your character, my goodness, you heard the comments from the crew members. Your hair didnt you love it . The blond tips blond tip, the mullet. Business in the front, party in the back. Everyone george you watch, hes going to start growing it out. Its going to happen. Come on man. You know you love it. Next time we do a dear me thats going to be the picture of george. You talk about your wife. Throwback thursday and we had the first time you did an australian tv show oh my gosh. Remember. Corelli. Lets see it. Youre 28. 79 years for armed robbery. Spent quite a bit of time inside havent you. A bit of a mullet. 19 years between mullets. You met on the set, fell in love and got married. I was absolutely mad about her and absolutely embarrassed about it because it was my first job. She was a leading lady and anyway it all turned out well 19 years later and better than ever. Beautiful kids. Shes watching right now. I love you, baby. So are we going to have wolverine can we have wolverine and ironman meet up . I would love that. Spiderman is joined yeah. Seemingly impossible is possible. So i would love that. Can you speak to robert. Put in a good word for me . I think i can do that. Hugh always a delight. Good to see you too. So much going on.
